When we think of fully realized fictional worlds, we tend to think of fantastical genre places like Middle-earth or the "Star Wars" universe. These are settings with intricate history and mythology; places not of our world.
One location we don't normally consider to be as intricate is Springfield. Plenty of sitcoms have fleshed-out worlds with characters the audience gets to know and care for over time, but few shows have as intricate a world with as much detail as "The Simpsons."
Sure, Springfield doesn't have fantasy elements or mythological creatures (most of the time), and it doesn't need them. This is as thoroughly constructed and fleshed out a world as "Dune," or Discworld, with its own unique history of deception, an abundance of colorful side characters like the enigmatic Dr. Marvin Monroe, a corrupt system of power, unique institutions, and more.
Before you light up your torches, think about how much we know about Springfield.

Guns N’ Roses made their name with a gritty blend of blues-infused hard rock, but the melodic ballad “Sweet Child o’ Mine” is the band’s most commercially successful song and only No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
In previous interviews, Slash has said that his opening arpeggio guitar riff was essentially a toss-off that serendipitously unlocked the song’s full potential. Bassist Duff McKagan has gone a step further, revealing that Slash was actually trying to sabotage the ballad with the guitar intro.
Speaking on the Songcraft podcast, McKagan reflected on the songwriting process for “Sweet Child o’ Mine” and the origins of the eventual hit.
“Izzy [Stradlin] had the three chords,” McKagan said (as transcribed by Ultimate Classic Rock). “Ok, well that’s… ‘What do you do with that?’ Axl liked it. ‘Ok, well let’s try to make this work somehow.’”
According to McKagan, Slash wasn’t a fan of the tune.

Guns N’ Roses have unveiled an AI-generated music video for their recent single “The General.” The animated clip intersperses a narrative story with footage of the band performing live.
“The General” was officially released in December following its live debut a month earlier. It’s also paired with the band’s previous single, “Perhaps,” on a 7-inch vinyl version. Both songs started out as unreleased demos from Guns N’ Roses’ Chinese Democracy sessions, but were newly re-recorded with guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan, who rejoined the band in 2016.
The video shows Axl Rose and the other band members performing the song, as their human forms become animated versions of themselves. Per a press release, “Between the concert footage, [the video] dives into the subconscious of a young boy who stares down the monsters of dark childhood memories, blurring worlds in the process. Guns N’ Roses have released a new single, “The General.” The slow-building, guitar-led song marks the rock band’s second track of 2023 following “Perhaps,” which dropped in August.
Last month, Guns N’ Roses debuted “The General” live during their two-night stand at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl. The song has been floating around for years. In 2007, Sebastian Bach spoke about the track in an interview, saying, “It’s by far the heaviest metal tune I think I’ve ever heard Axl [Rose] do, this slow, grinding riff with these high, piercing vocals,...

To borrow a phrase from Jack London’s 1909 novel Martin Eden, which is a book that Twilight Singers frontman Greg Dulli once found profoundly inspirational, the Black Out the Windows box set represents the band’s “work performed.” Did you appreciate these recordings when they were new? Or are you interested in them based on their reputation? Unlike Eden, a proletarian striver-turned-famous author who chided latecomers for sucking up to him after he achieved fame for work already performed, Dulli is more understanding of latecomer. If you weren’t around...

Guns N’ Roses performed at the Hollywood Bowl on Thursday night (November 2nd) in Los Angeles, and they offered up a special treat for the crowd. The legendary rock band gave the new song “The General” its live debut.
The band launched into “The General” 10 songs into the set, right in between the recent tunes “Perhaps” and “Absurd.” Before performing the track, singer Axl Rose said, “We’re gonna try a new song” and that the experience “could be very interesting.”
“The General” is the B-side to the recent physical release of “Perhaps,” which arrived earlier this year. The song marks the fourth new track Guns N’ Roses have released since the 2016 return of classic members Slash and Duff McKagan. All of the songs were reworked from earlier demos, mostly from the Chinese Democracy sessions.

Duff McKagan released his third solo album, Lighthouse, on Friday (October 20th), and the Guns N’ Roses bassist has unveiled a music video for the song “I Just Don’t Know” featuring Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains.
The plaintive and honest clip sees McKagan and Cantrell playing the acoustic-based track under a massive strobe light that changes based on the mood of the music. Cantrell also contributes a guitar solo and backing vocals to the track.
Lyrically, it’s McKagan at his most sincere and personal, his voice dominant amongst the chiming acoustics — for which Cantrell is a perfect fit. The collab also sees Cantrell reciprocating McKagan’s contribution to the the former’s 2021 solo album, Brighten.
As for Lighthouse, McKagan began work on the project after opening his own Seattle recording studio in 2019. In a press release, he said that the studio allowed him to “finally explore songs...

After releasing their new single “Perhaps” earlier this week, Guns N’ Roses performed the song live for the first time on Friday night (August 18th) at Pnc Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Axl Rose and company broke out “Perhaps” as the 12th tune of their 27-song setlist. Fan-filmed video footage shows Slash playing the song’s bouncy guitar riff as Axl sings its wide-ranging vocals.
“Perhaps” leaked via bar jukeboxes last weekend, then was given its radio debut on Thursday via Audacy stations before officially premiering as a music video and on streaming services on Friday.
A 7-inch vinyl version of “Perhaps” will arrive on October 23rd, with another new track, “The General,” serving as the B-side. Pre-orders are available here.

Since Axl Rose, Slash, and Duff McKagan reunited as Guns N’ Roses in 2016, fans of the band have been hoping for new studio music from the group. They’ve been rewarded here and there, with the electro-punk of “Absurd” (né “Silkworms”) in August 2021 and the more traditional rocker “Hard Skool” the next month. Now, two years later, and after a false start last week, Gn’R have officially released a piano-driven song titled “Perhaps.”

After a leak on bar jukeboxes over the weekend, Guns N’ Roses have officially released the new single “Perhaps” (watch the video below).
According to Audacy, the song was “written and recorded by Axl Rose, Slash, and Duff McKagan this year,” and marks their “first collective new composition and recording together in 30 years since 1993’s The Spaghetti Incident?”

While Slash and Duff may have had a bigger hand in writing the official version of “Perhaps” than the band’s 2021 singles “Hard Skool” and “ABSUЯD” (which were both reworked from years-old demos), “Perhaps” is not an entirely new song.
A rough demo version of “Perhaps” has been floating around for several years, and Guns N’ Roses played the song during a soundcheck before a show in Israel in June of this year.

A new Guns N’ Roses song, titled “Perhaps,” accidentally leaked this weekend via those digital jukeboxes found in bars.
“Perhaps,” which dates back to the Chinese Democracy sessions, was previously played by the reunited Gn’R during a soundtrack before their Tel Aviv concert in June 2023, with low-quality recordings spreading on the internet; a rough demo version has also circulated for years.
In recent weeks, pre-save pages for the track briefly appeared on streaming services heralding an Aug. 11 release date, but Friday came and went without the song’s arrival.

Billy White Jr., the artist who designed the iconic cross logo on the album cover for Guns N’ Roses‘ Appetite for Destruction, has died. Slash broke the sad news on Instagram, paying tribute to the White.

Duff McKagan has announced his third solo album, Lighthouse, due October 20th. In advance of its release, the Guns N’ Roses bassist has unveiled the title track.
The 11-song effort ends with three tracks boasting notable guest musicians: “Hope,” featuring McKagan’s Gn’R bandmate Slash; “I Just Don’t Know,” featuring Alice in Chains’ Jerry Cantrell; and “Lighthouse (Reprise)” featuring punk godfather Iggy Pop.
On the title track, McKagan sounds like a punk-rock Bob Dylan as he sings the initial verses over an acoustic guitar line for the first minute or so of the tune. From there, the song kicks in with multi-track vocals and pounding drums for the soaring chorus.
McKagan says of the new album and its theme, “The crashing…. the cresting waves, the falling through of all that surrounds you. Life sometimes tosses us around, and we feel the want of comfort and the pull of home.

Guns N’ Roses’ bassist, Duff McKagan, wants your guiding light on “Lighthouse,” the gentle title track from his upcoming solo album. “Won’t you be my lighthouse?” he sings over a gospel backdrop of organ and backup vocalists. “Give me sight and lead me on/Oh, shine on me, my lighthouse/And dry my aching bones.” The music then shifts gears and becomes more uplifting as McKagan leads a choir singing “Shine, shine, shine,” building bigger and bigger. The full album will shine its light on Oct. 20.

Among the rarities in the 32-song set were the Use Your Illusion I track “Bad Obsessions” (first time since 1993), the Use Your Illusion II cut “Pretty Tied Up” (first time since 1992), and the Appetite for Destruction song “Anything Goes” (first time since 1988). The show also marked the live debut of a cover of The Stooges’ “T.V. Eye,” sung by bassist Duff McKagan.
All told, the band played nine songs from Appetite for Destruction, including classics like “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Paradise City” and “Sweet Child O’ Mine.”
Additional covers included a rendition of the UK Subs tune “Down on the Farm” (first time since 2006), as well as Velvet Revolver’s “Slither,” and others. The band also played...

After miraculously enticing Axl Rose to join her onstage at Stagecoach 2022 and, yet again, at her L.A. headlining concert earlier this year, Carrie Underwood will return the favor and open for Guns N’ Roses when the band plays Nashville on its summer 2023 tour. Underwood joined the entirety of Gnr onstage in London last summer, and it’s a fair bet fans will see her again between Rose, Slash, and Duff McKagan in Music City.
In addition to the Nashville appearance at Geodis Park, Underwood will open two Guns N’ Roses shows in Canada.

Rock bands always have their fair share of ups and downs, with members coming and going; sometimes by choice, sometimes because they’re forced to. Guns N’ Roses drummer Steven Adler got the boot from the band after he couldn’t keep up his side of a bargain to stay clean.
Steven Adler’s success with Guns N’ Roses was marred by his addiction to drugs and alcohol
Adler joined Guns N’ Roses in 1985, along with vocalist Axl Rose, lead guitarist Slash, rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin, and bass player Duff McKagan. The group played Los Angeles nightclubs before getting signed to Geffen Records in 1986.
Their debut album, Appetite for Destruction, was released the following year. It was a huge success and still sells copies today; to date, it has sold over 30 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling debut album of all time in the U.S.

Duff McKagan is helping to raise attention for Mental Health Awareness Month with “This Is the Song,” the Guns N’ Roses bassist’s first new solo recording since 2019’s Tenderness album. “This is the song that’s gonna save my life as I scrape for sanity,” he croons while strumming an acoustic guitar. “Tried Lexapro and what else I don’t know, but still they can’t agree.” The track slowly builds into a swaying, multilayered ballad as McKagan sings, “Come along with me/We’ll get stronger,” before ending on a hopeful note.

Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan has unveiled a new solo single titled “This Is the Song,” addressing his longterm battle with panic disorder. The track has been released as part of a three-song EP in conjunction with Mental Health Awareness Month.
In the acoustic song, the veteran rocker sings, “This is the song that’s gonna save my life/ As I scrape for sanity/ Tried Lexipro and what else I don’t know/ But still they can’t agree.”
A message from McKagan posted on his official website reads, in part:
“Just after 2019, of course, Covid hit, and we all hunkered down and watched as our world as we knew it changed in myriad ways.
Mental health for all of us became more serious, as being cooped up and somewhat freaked out affected everyone. I have dealt with a certain variety of panic disorder since the age of sixteen,...

The legendary Iggy Pop, who turns 76 today (April 21st), kicked off his spring West Coast US tour at the Regent Theater in Los Angeles on Thursday night (April 20th).
His all-star backing band for this run includes bassist Duff McKagan (Guns N’ Roses), drummer Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), guitarist/producer Andrew Watt, and guitarist Jamie Hince (The Kills).
The godfather of punk is out in support of his new album, Every Loser, which was produced by Watt and features McKagan and Smith on several tracks. The brief outing continues through an April 29th show in Las Vegas, with tickets available here.
The 12-song set for the tour kickoff included a cover of “Walk on the Wild Side.” While the rendition of the Lou Reed classic slowed things down considerably, Iggy and company rocked it out on solo favorites like “The Passenger” and “Lust for Life,” alongside Every Loser...

Rock music in the 1980s was full of debauchery and excess, and like many of their fellow Sunset Strip peers, Guns N’ Roses notoriously lived it up during their prime.
In a new interview with Yahoo! Entertainment (watch below), Slash admitted that the band’s antics probably wouldn’t sit well by today’s standards and that a young Gn’R would be “canceled” nowadays.
“I haven’t actually… thought about it in that context,” Slash said. “To be honest, I haven’t really thought about all that [scandalous stuff] that much recently. But now that you mention it, most of everything that [Guns N’ Roses] did would’ve gotten us canceled in this day and age.”
He added: “We would not have fared well in this environment, for sure… on so many different levels. But I mean, a lot of things from back then would not be what you consider acceptable at this moment in time.

Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan has seemingly announced the group’s appearance at Glastonbury 2023.
Speaking on his SiriusXM radio show Three Chords & The Truth, the 58-year-old musician revealed details of his band’s summer plans, including a show at Hyde Park a week after Glastonbury.
After speaking of the London show, McKagan added: “…and Glastonbury is gonna be iconic.”
The Independent has contacted Guns N’ Roses and Glastonbury for comment.
So far, Elton John has been the only musician officially confirmed to headline the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury Festival this year.
The news was announced by co-organiser Emily Eavis in December 2022 on Twitter.
“It gives me enormous pleasure to let you know that the one and only Elton John will be making his first-ever Glastonbury appearance, headlining the Pyramid Stage on Sunday night next year,” she wrote.

“I’m in a frenzy!” 75-year-old Iggy Pop barks on “Frenzy,” the first track on Every Loser. This comes as something of a surprise. While such a state used to be par for the course for the most shirtless man in rock, it’s been a while since his solo work has reflected that kind of intensity. Both Préliminaires, in 2009, and Après, in 2012, focused on his earthy croon (in French, no less). Iggy had spent much of the first decade or so of the 21st century thrashing out his demons with the reformed Stooges,...

In the parking lot of a Panera, just off I-95 in Stafford, Virginia, Rick Dunsford climbed into the passenger seat of a white Ford F-350 pick-up. Depending whose account you believe, he was holding either 12,000 or 15,000 in cash. It was late afternoon on a Friday in July 2019. Dunsford had been driving through the night, making stops along the way — in Charlotte, North Carolina, to pick up an associate, Madeline Rose; at his sister’s house in Virginia, to collect some of the money; and at a couple of different Wells-Fargo...

Pistols N’ Petals. Firearms N’ Flowers. Weapons N’ Water Lilies. Guns N’ Roses are sending an online firearms store on the search for a new name. On behalf of the band, Axl Rose has filed a lawsuit against Texas Guns and Roses, which claims the shop’s name intentionally aims to confuse customers into believing it was created in association with, or at least with the permission of, the rock band.
“This is particularly damaging to Gnr given the nature of Defendant’s business,” the lawsuit reads, via USA Today.

It took Guns N’ Roses less than a year to go from hard-rock paupers, targeted by L.A. street urchins with stuttering taunts of “Welcome to the jungle, you’re gonna die” (or, worse, “feel my serpentine?”), to become the Most Dangerous Band in the World. They were unprepared for fame. Their debut, 1987’s Appetite for Destruction, was crude and rude; its sci-fi cover illustration depicted a sexual assault, its lyrics reveled in misogyny and heroin abuse, one song (“Rocket Queen”) contained literal audio pornography, as a woman pants while...

The legendary Ozzy Osbourne feels remorse for not making “more varied” music. While he is proud of the way Black Sabbath made heavy metal “big”, the rockstar said that he would have liked to have explored outside of the genre and produced some songs that were less “aggressive”, reports aceshowbiz.com.
“You know what, I would have liked to have been a little more varied,” he told The Sun newspaper when asked if he wished he had ever moved away from heavy metal.
“Black Sabbath music is very aggressive even if some of it is foot-tapping.”
“But we fought the f****** world to make it big. But mind you, it’s a good thing we didn’t get our royalties when we were 23 because I would have f***** myself into another planet.”
The 73-year-old singer said that there are some collaborations he’d loved to have been able to secure.
