She’s late-night royalty thanks to her record 21 performances of “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” on David Letterman’s NBC and CBS shows, but Darlene Love says she isn’t feeling the love from Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show.
Since Letterman’s retirement in 2015, Love has performed her signature Christmas song on The View, NBC’s Christmas in Rockefeller Center, and even on Letterman’s YouTube Channel. You might think she’d be welcomed at The Tonight Show too, but the 82-year-old Love took to Facebook this week to express her frustration at the show’s apparent lack of interest.
“Was hoping to make an appearance on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to do one last late-night performance but his music producer … keeps giving us the runaround and saying they’re booked months in advance,” Love wrote.

Elvis Presley might have been accused of cultural appropriation more than any other singer. A famous singer from the 1960s didn’t seem to take issue with the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll taking inspiration from Black music. Of course, her perspective is not universal.
A member of a Black girl group didn’t feel Elvis Presley committed cultural appropriation
Darlene Love was a member of the Black girl group The Blossoms, which worked with Phil Spector. The Blossoms released classic tunes such as “He’s Sure the Boy I Love” and “He’s a Rebel,” both of which were incorrectly attributed to The Crystals. As a solo singer, Love became most known for a pair of Christmas recordings: the seasonal favorite “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” and the Home Alone 2 soundtrack single “All Alone on Christmas.”
During a 2018 interview with The Village Voice, Love was asked if Elvis appropriated music.

Elvis Presley‘s ’68 Comeback Special was a career highlight for Elvis. It was also a career highlight of a girl group star. She revealed what it was like to work with the “Heartbreak Hotel” singer.

During a 2023 interview with The Guardian, singer Darlene Love discussed her relationship with record producer Phil Spector. “I was in [girl group and backing-singer legends] The Blossoms when he hired me to record ‘He’s a Rebel’ [in 1962],” she recalled. “I knew it was for The Crystals but I got paid a bundle of money – $5,000 was a lot then. After I signed with Phil and we did ‘Da Do Ron Ron’ and ‘He’s Sure the Boy I Love’ [also credited to The Crystals], I told him my name should be on, but I hadn’t read the contract.” Love would become most known for singing the seminal Christmas song “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home),” which Spector wrote and co-produced.

Cher didn’t release an album of Christmas songs until this year. Despite this, she performed vocals on the best Christmas song of the rock ‘n’ roll era. She revealed what it was like to revisit that career milestone.

2023 saw the release of Cher’s first Christmas album, which is simply titled Christmas. For 28 years, it was a holiday tradition for Darlene Love to perform her signature hit “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” on David Letterman’s late night shows, but that all came to an end when he went off air in 2015. Now, they’ve reunited for Letterman’s YouTube channel to pick up where they left off.
Before Love sang “Christmas” with accompaniment from Letterman’s longtime band leader Paul Shaffer on piano, they all had a chat about the tradition. Letterman also asked Love about recently performing the song with Cher during the Rockefeller Center tree lighting special.
This prompted Love to air out her feelings about never being asked to play the song solo for the annual ceremony. “Do you know they wouldn’t hire me for that?” she said, noting that other artists have performed the track instead.

Two months have passed since Cher released her floor-thumping yuletide anthem “DJ Play a Christmas Song,” and the request finally reached The Kelly Clarkson Show’s house band on Tuesday. The show’s host, who is a Christmas Queen herself, crooned and belted the neo-disco tune (in bellbottoms!) during the “Kellyoke” portion of her show. When the chorus came in, she beamed a smile brighter than Rudolph’s nose: “DJ play a Christmas song, I wanna be dancing all night long.”

Darlene Love’s annual television performance of “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” was essentially orphaned after “Late Show With David Letterman” went off the air in 2015, putting an end to the 28-year streak that had the music legend singing her signature holiday song with Paul Shaffer’s band on Letterman’s last original show before Christmas each December. But they all reunited — not over the air, but on YouTube — for a resumption of the tradition, nine years after the last time this particular caroling took place on CBS.

Listening to favorite Christmas songs is a vital part of the entire holiday season. Our new photo gallery ranks the Top 30 greatest tunes from worst to best. We only had two rules for assembling our list: each song can only be featured once and the same goes for each artist.
We chose what is considered the most definitive version of each song as performed by the singers most associated with the tunes. Of course, certain people most known for Christmas had to be included — Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Judy Garland, Perry Como, Andy Williams, Mariah Carey and more.
Among our list you’ll find Rock and Roll Hall of Famers such as Elvis Presley, Bruce Springsteen, Darlene Love, Brenda Lee and The Eagles. And we didn’t forget songs that originated from great TV specials like “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Frosty the Snowman,” “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

Several singers and songwriters have tried to claim the title of “Queen of Christmas” over the years. Depending on your age, you probably have a favorite, ranging from Darlene Love to Dolly Parton.
But Mariah Carey, who tried unsuccessfully to trademark the title (which would have allowed such branding on items ranging from fragrance to dog toys), seems to have given her blessing to Brenda Lee this week.
Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You has become ubiquitous since its 1994 launch. But she seems willing to share the spotlight with a predecessor.
She sent flowers after Lee this week topped the Billboard Hot 100 singles charts with her holiday hit, Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree, some 65 years after it was recorded. Lee was just 13 when she recorded the boppy tune. Although it has been on the charts, it never hit No. 1 until this year.

NBC saw solid ratings on Wednesday night with the airing of two Christmas specials
Airing from 8-10 p.m. on Nov. 29, the annual “Christmas in Rockefeller Center” special reached an audience of 7 million people when accounting for three days of delayed viewing across NBC, Peacock and digital platforms. That number, calculated from a combination of Nielsen measurement and NBCUniversal’s proprietary data, marked the best viewership for the Rockefeller Christmas tree lighting since 2020. The special was the most-watched program on TV that night, and improved on last year’s viewership by 7%. In the key adults 18-49 demographic, it earned a strong 0.8 rating.

The 91st annual Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 29, with this year’s 80-foot tall, 43-foot wide Norway Spruce arriving courtesy of Gym Class Heroes drummer Matt McGinley and his wife Jackie.
The tree, which weighs around 12 tons, was plucked from the musician’s property in Vestal, New York, and delivered to Rockefeller Center on Nov. 11. It’s...

Cher’s 1998 smash album Believe, and its still glorious title-track, turn 25 this year — but definitely do not bring that up to Cher.
Asked about Believe’s anniversary, and how “amazing” it was, in a new interview on Today, Cher did not miss a beat, quipping, “It’s not that amazing, ok?” With a laugh, she added: “It pisses the fuck out of me!”
The pop legend proceeded to speak candidly about her thoughts on aging. She acknowledged that her mother, the singer-songwriter and actress Georgia Holt “didn’t mind” getting older,...

Cher will appear at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade for the first time in her six-decade career. The muti-hyphenate is scheduled to perform a song from her holiday album Christmas. When is the ageless entertainer expected to sing during the traditional parade of stars, musicians, Broadway performers, and iconic balloons? Here are all the details.
When can Cher fans see her performance?
Cher is set to close out the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. She takes the place of honor just before the event’s biggest star, Santa Claus.
The multi-hyphenate will sing a song off of Christmas. This release is her first-holiday album in a six-decade career in the music industry.

Stripped of a handful of tracks filled with contemporary signifiers, Cher’s Christmas could have been released at any point in the singer’s nearly six-decade career. Whether it be a faithful rendition of “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home),” featuring the original queen of Christmas, Darlene Love, or the ingratiating original song “Christmas Ain’t Christmas Without You,” the majority of the album’s 13 tracks opt for a traditional holiday approach.
It’s when Cher and frequent collaborator Mark Taylor steer the project toward the long-dated dance-pop of the pair’s late-’90s smash “Believe” that the sleigh goes off the rails. For one, the album’s paint-by-numbers opening track, “DJ Play a Christmas Song,” is marred by a rudimentary hook—“DJ, play a Christmas song/I wanna be dancing all night long”—and gratuitous Auto-Tune and half-step key change. Cher is ready to pack her bags if a certain former president finds his way back into the Oval Office. In a broad-ranging interview with the Guardian, the singer was asked how she felt about Donald Trump being potentially re-elected.
“I almost got an ulcer the last time,” Cher replied. “If he gets in, who knows? This time I will leave [the country].”
She also discussed the issue of trans rights, reflecting on the ongoing pushback from the right and the constant laws being passed against trans people in the U.S.

Earlier this year, Darlene Love picked up the phone and heard a voice on the other end she didn’t quite recognize at first. “Doll, hi!” she heard. “This is Cher.” Love asked her to repeat who was calling. “Cher, bitch!”
She was calling to see if Love would sing “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” with her on her upcoming holiday album Christmas, revisiting a tune they sang together exactly 60 years ago on A Christmas Gift for You From Phil Spector, one of the greatest Christmas albums in music history.

Cher is skipping over Halloween and heading straight for Christmas, her first-ever holiday album set for release on Oct. 20. The first single from the record, “DJ Play a Christmas Song,” finds the singer losing herself in the escapism of dance, with no jingle bells or mentions of sleigh rides anywhere in the three-and-a-half minute pop spectacle.

Los Angeles, April 17 (Ians) The inaugural American Music Honors awards show – a fundraiser for the Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music at Monmouth University – was without two very important presenters in attendance – Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa.
Bob Santelli, the Archives’ executive director, broke the news that the Springsteens were both diagnosed with Covid-19 just hours after Springsteen took a final bow Friday night at the Prudential Center, wrapping the first part of his 2023 tour with the E Street Band, reports Variety.
“It broke our hearts around 6 a.m. this morning when I got a call that two of the most important people who were supposed to be here, Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa, unfortunately came down with Covid-19.
While the news was met with silence in the crowd, host Jon Stewart lightened the mood, joking: “They’re alive. Don’t overreact. You can still see them in concert.

As far as Christmas action movies go, most would say John McTiernan’s Die Hard takes the crown as the greatest of all time. However, another action classic that hit theaters a year before, Lethal Weapon, is also set around the holiday. Written by a young Shane Black (using the Christmas setting that would become his trademark), this wound up being perhaps the most influential action movie of all time, maybe even more so than Die Hard (although that’s debatable). While not the first buddy cop movie (older films like Freebie and the Bean and Best Movie You Never Saw fave Running Scared are also part of the genre), it set the tone for many films to follow. There was something so perfect about the pairing of Mel Gibson’s crazed Martin Riggs and Danny Glover’s family man Roger Murtagh, along with Richard Donner’s ace direction. The three men loved each other,...

Singer Mariah Carey will not be able to call herself the legal Queen of Christmas after her trademark requests to claim that phrase as well as “Princess Christmas” and “Qoc” were all denied by the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.
While Carey certainly has a stranglehold on the Christmas season ever since she released the song “All I Want For Christmas Is You” in 1994, her claim to trademark the Queen of Christmas honorific quickly received backlash from other singers Elizabeth Chan and Darlene Love.

Chan, who is a self-proclaimed full-time Christmas singer, told Variety, “I feel very strongly that no person should hold onto anything around Christmas or monopolize it in the way Mariah seeks to in perpetuity.” Chan filed a formal opposition to Carey after the trademark claim was made public.

The “All I Want For Christmas” singer applied for the trademark in March of 2021. At the time, she quickly faced backlash after legendary singer, Darlene Love, and musician, Elizabeth Chan, fired back at Carey’s attempt.
In Carey’s filing, she stated that she planned to use the trademark for “fragrances, lotions, nail polish, jewelry, cups, mugs, chocolate milk, coconut water … as well as ornaments, toys, dog clothing, masks, lingerie and sweatshirts,” as TMZ reports.

Showtime’s new four-part documentary Spector, focused on the spectacular rise and spectacular fall of music pioneer and convicted murderer Phil Spector, is the best possible promotion for Showtime’s four-part documentary We Need to Talk About Cosby.
It’s such a difficult tightrope to walk when you’re trying to explore a disgraced icon — not simply the separating of the art from the artist, but finding a smart way to contextualize the art within the life of the flawed person who created it.
W. Kamau Bell’s conversation starter about Bill Cosby handled this task exceptionally. It isn’t aesthetically dynamic, but We Need to Talk About Cosby is smart and challenging at every turn, forcing viewers to ponder inextricable linkages between aspects of Cosby’s career and a personal life that has seen him accused of sexual misconduct by 50+ women. Spector, the new, four-part documentary premiering on Showtime on November 4th, is unique among music docs: It’s part true-crime narrative, part monumentally lurid Behind the Music. ‘Spector’ Examines the Life and Crime of Phil Spector, and Reclaims Lana Clarkson’s Story: TV Review
The pop hits of Phil Spector — and there are many of them — depend on a theatrical maximalism. As a producer, Spector’s innovation was the “Wall of Sound,” a shock-and-awe approach to music that is as dazzling as it is overwhelming. Just listen to the Ronettes’ “Be My Baby” or Ike & Tina Turner’s “River Deep — Mountain High” to understand his approach: The songs are so densely orchestrated that they’re practically tactile.
Spector’s reputation today is, rightly, more rooted in the events of his life than in the art he made. But “Spector,” a four-part documentary series on Showtime directed by Sheena M. Joyce and Don Argott, works to make a case that his music — its particular qualities and the stressful process by which it was made — helps explain the man.

Mariah Carey wants to trademark the title "Queen of Christmas," but a few other reigning holiday icons think she's going too far with the legal effort.
The drama began when Carey, known for her iconic single "All I Want For Christmas Is You," filed for the trademark in March 2021, though the filing only became public on July 12, per the trademark application, which is viewable online. It would apply to a wide range of goods, from fragrances to jewelry, glassware, clothing, and (unsurprisingly) Christmas ornaments.
In response, Elizabeth Chan, who only sings Christmas music and whose most recent album was called "The Queen of Christmas," spoke out strongly against Carey's efforts. "Christmas has come way before any of us on earth, and hopefully will be around way after any of us on earth," she said to Variety on Aug. 15. Mariah Carey is not the “Queen of Christmas”, according to Darlene Love and Elizabeth Chan.
Love and Chan have both been associated with the title, with Love singing on Phil Spector’s A Christmas Gift for You back in 1963 and performing “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” on David Letterman’s show every year from 1986 through 2014.
Chan, on the other hand, was also known as the “Queen of Christmas” in the media before using the name for her 2021 album title.
Despite this, Carey has now taken it upon herself to attempt to register the title as a trademark so she’ll be the only person who can use it.

According to Variety, Chan’s attorney then filed a formal declaration of opposition to Carey’s trademark on Friday, with Love also speaking out about the whole thing on Facebook.

“Summer of Soul” is the first proper music-centered film to land an Oscar nomination in Best Documentary Feature since 2015’s “Amy.” Despite that gap, the Questlove-directed doc will likely win the Oscar, much like “Amy” did. The film has won dozens of awards leading up to the Oscars, including the BAFTA, the Critics Choice Documentary Award and the Independent Spirit Award, making it a clear favorite to win the big prize.
The early-to-mid-2010s was a boon for music documentaries, starting with “Searching for Sugar Man” (2012), about singer-songwriter Sixto Rodriguez. The pattern continued with “20 Feet from Stardom” (2013), about the lives of various backup singers like Darlene Love. “Amy” made it a trend two years later with its chronicle of the strategic rise and fall of British singer Amy Winehouse. That same year, “What Happened, Miss Simone?”, about the life of Nina Simone, was also nominated. “Searching for Sugar Man,...

Ronnie Spector, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer who fronted classic 1960s girl group the Ronettes, delivered the iconic vocal on their hit “Be My Baby” and counted many of rock’s biggest names as fans, died today of cancer. She was 78.
Here family shared the news on her official website:
Our beloved earth angel, Ronnie, peacefully left this world today after a brief battle with cancer. She was with family and in the arms of her husband, Jonathan.
Ronnie lived her life with a twinkle in her eye, a spunky attitude, a wicked sense of humor and a smile on her face. She was filled with love and gratitude.
