Peak intellectual property doesn’t have the same ring to it as peak TV. Drama based on tried-and-true ideas, however, removes risk for commissioners in challenging international markets and is in vogue. But producers be warned: the best ideas don’t come cheap.
The volume of TV drama ordered will increase in 2024 according to analysts, but it will remain way off the Golden Era highs. The well of money for scripted TV hasn’t run dry, but it’s no longer overflowing.
The Series Mania Forum is engineered for market shifts with its international co-production strand feeling more relevant than ever. Laurence Herszberg, Founder and General Director of Series Mania, said the industry element of the Festival is a toolbox for professionals. One tool it will add this year is a new IP market. The dedicated space will allow IP owners to press the flesh with the 4,000 TV folk expected in Lilles in March.

Exclusive: Starz programming exec Jeff Cooke is set to exit the Lionsgate company.
We’ve learned Cooke, Starz’s SVP of Programming for International Networks, will leave the business this July. The exec has been with Starz owner Lionsgate for a decade and with the U.S. cable network’s international arm since 2018. He was promoted to his current role in January last year.
Starz declined to comment on Cooke’s departure, but we understand he’ll remain with the business until the summer. There is no word on his movements after that.
Cooke’s departure comes four months after Starz International Networks President Superna Kalle stepped down, replaced by EVP of International Networks Darren Nielson, and less than a year after international streaming service Starzplay was rebranded Lionsgate+. In January, we were first with the news Lionsgate International exec Marc Lorber was exiting.

Exclusive: Marc Lorber, Lionsgate’s SVP of International TV Co-Productions and Acquisitions, is exiting the studio after almost a decade.
Lorber joined Lionsgate in 2013 and was upped to his current post in 2019, leading a team focusing on identifying scripted TV dramas, miniseries and comedies that can be co-developed or produced around the world.
He has worked on projects including BAFTA-winning comedy Motherland, BBC Wales drama The Pact and Irish/Belgian co-production Northern Lights, which Deadline revealed Lionsgate had boarded in October. Lorber struck relationships with international networks at a time when the allure of non-u.S. content has skyrocketed, and he has also been across the BBC Studios deal that has seen adaptations of the likes of This Country and Ghosts remade in the States.
He departed amicably on December 31 and is yet to settle on his next career move.

With support from Lionsgate, the two businesses produced films including Alan Rickman’s A Little Chaos [pictured] and John Le Carré adaptation A Most Wanted Man.
Lionsgate has now formally invested in the firm, which is yet to secure any TV commissions.
The deal extends the Us firm’s TV interests after it invested in Primal Media & Kindle Entertainment, co-financed Channel 4 comedy Damned and hired former ITV drama boss Steve November as its creative director of UK Television.

Mad Men producer and distributor Lionsgate is to ramp up its push into television production in the UK and is looking to hire development and production executives.
The company, which also produces Netflix’s female prison drama Orange Is The New Black and ABC’s country drama Nashville, is also searching for a head of UK TV production.
Lionsgate UK chief executive Zygi Kamasa said: “We want to create more British TV content that works in the UK but that we can also take back to the Us networks through [Lionsgate TV chairman] Kevin Beggs’ relationships. The Us networks want more British content.”
Lionsgate recently shot The Royals, a soapy Us drama about the British royal family starring Liz Hurley, in London.
