Can you believe it’s already been fifteen years since 2009? I feel older than Jason’s mother’s head. But never mind all that. We’re going to look into the past in celebratory fashion today and take a month-to-month look at what the world of horror looked like back in 2009.
The dreaded month of January kicked things off in usual January fashion with a forgettable title, The Unborn. A David S. Goyer picture that’s not very memorable but managed to be the sixth most successful horror film of 2009 domestically, raking in over $42 million at the box office.
Right behind it on the calendar was Patrick Lussier’s My Bloody Valentine 3D starring “Supernatural” actor Jensen Ackles. This slasher remake took the idea of January horror and embraced it, making a silly and gory slasher that was the world’s first R-rated film to ever use Real3D technology.

‘Drag Me to Hell’ – New Australian Blu-ray Celebrates 15 Years of Sam Raimi’s Horror Return [Review]
Of all the masters of horror that helped to reshape the genre as we know it in the ’70s and ’80s, none were more successful in branching out and achieving commercial success within the studio system than Sam Raimi. His Spider-Man trilogy laid the groundwork for the influx of comic book movies that would follow, but he was eager to return to his roots following the third installment’s turbulent production.
Armed with $30 million and complete creative control, Raimi dusted off a story he wrote with elder brother and frequent collaborator Ivan Raimi back in the ’90s to make his triumphant return to horror with Drag Me to Hell in 2009. The Raimi broters seemingly drew inspiration from 1957’s Night of the Demon but injected it with a heavy dose of Evil Dead DNA, most closely evoking Evil Dead 2‘s cartoonish blend of over-the-top splatter and tongue-in-cheek humor.

The episode of Revisited covering Drag Me to Hell was Written by Cody Hamman, Narrated and Edited by Tyler Nichols, Produced by Tyler Nichols and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Director Sam Raimi’s Drag Me to Hell (watch it Here) isn’t technically one of his Evil Dead movies. There’s no Bruce Campbell, no Necromicon. But it really feels like it’s set in the same world as the Evil Dead franchise. There’s demons, possession, over-the-top fight scenes, disgusting sight gags… and it’s all mixed with a strong dash of humor. Drag Me to Hell may not be as popular as its Evil Dead cousins. But it’s a great horror movie in its own right – and it’s time for it to be Revisited.

Fire sparked by a lightning strike has destroyed an Alabama prop house used in Tim Burton’s 2003 movie Big Fish.
“We lost a house in the Town of Spectre tonight after a lightning strike,” reads a post on Jackson Lake Island’s Facebook page.
The house was located on Jackson Lake Island in the fictitious town of Spectre, Al, built specifically for the movie.
The fantasy comedy-drama directed by Burton, based on Daniel Wallace’s 1998 novel, starred Ewan McGregor, Albert Finney, Billy Crudup, Jessica Lange, Helena Bonham Carter, Alison Lohman, Robert Guillaume, Marion Cotillard and Steve Buscemi. The film’s plotline revolves around the story of a frustrated son who tries to distinguish fact from fiction in the life of his father, a teller of tall tales.
The film was shot on location in Alabama in a series of fairy tale vignettes evoking the tone of a Southern Gothic fantasy.

There never has been a movie star quite like Nicolas Cage. While obviously handsome and gifted with backlogs of charisma, beneath the surface there lies an unmistakable hunger, a sense of searching, and what some might even call a mania to take a role to its fullest extreme. Even when Cage is taking the “paycheck” parts, be it in glossy ‘90s Hollywood star vehicles or some of his lesser 2010s straight-to-digital efforts, the actor’s tangible desire to push boundaries and experiment is nothing short of riveting.
In a Reddit Ama, Cage once said the following about his craft: “I think many of the choices I’ve made have been inspired by film stars from the silent era, as well as cultural expression of performance like Kabuki and some of the Golden Age actors like [James] Cagney, so I don’t know how to say I’ve done something new because...

Here there be spoilers. Consider yourself warned. After spending years web-slinging around New York City with Spider-Man, Sam Raimi finally returned to his horror roots with Drag Me to Hell. The supernatural horror movie starred Alison Lohman as Christine, a bank loan officer who is cursed when she denies an elderly woman’s request to extend her mortgage. Over the last fourteen years, fans have wondered whether they might get a sequel to the gruesome feature, and Sam Raimi recently teased that Drag Me to Hell 2 is a possibility.
During a Reddit Ama (Ask Me Anything), a Redditor asked Sam Raimi if there was any chance of Drag Me to Hell 2. The director answered: “The team at Ghost House Pictures: Romel Adam and Jose Canas, are trying to come up with a story that would work and I’m anxious to hear if they do!” Of course, this is...

The ending to 2009’s Drag Me to Hell damn sure made good on the promise of the title, with Sam Raimi‘s return to horror suggesting that there wasn’t anything left to tell in regards to that particular story. In fact, Raimi had told Bloody Disgusting back in 2019 that the reason there was never a sequel was simply because the ending of the first movie was so definitive.
Raimi explained to us, “I don’t have a story, because in my mind the character got killed, and worse. So I didn’t know how to proceed with the sequel. Usually, for me, I’m left with a character that I really am interested [in] or a concept that really feels like it needs to continue. But this is such a definitive ending that in my mind I didn’t know where to start with a sequel.”

The article contains spoilers for "Drag Me to Hell."
It looks like a particular cursed button might be making life hell for someone in the future. According to a recent Reddit Ama with Scott Beck, Bryan Woods, and Sam Raimi, the creative team of the upcoming movie "65," the possibility exists for a sequel to the 2009 Raimi horror film "Drag Me to Hell." Even as a person who isn't always the biggest fan of horror films — not because they aren't incredible, but because I'm a huge 'fraidy cat — this was one I loved. The idea of a return to the curse of a woman punishing someone for lacking compassion is intriguing.

2022 was the year of the little horror film that could. More specifically, it was the year of a few little horror films that could. And by "could" I mean make a profit while providing sufficient nightmare fodder for us all (Have I seen the skin-peeling scene from "Terrifier 2?" No. Is my world bleaker for knowing about it? Absolutely). Whether it was Paramount's surprise hit "Smile" or the uber-violent "Terrifier 2" itself, which made almost 11 million on a 250,000 budget, this past year has further cemented horror as the only other bankable box office genre alongside all that superhero stuff.
But perhaps the most interesting of this year's crop of gruesome cinematic visions is the delightfully refreshing, and genuinely terrifying, "Barbarian." The result of sketch troupe founder and sitcom regular Zach Cregger's first directorial effort in the horror genre, the film raked in a very respectable 44 million at the...

The horror genre is no stranger to divisive endings, eliciting extreme reactions from audiences who find them either fittingly devastating or pointlessly brutal. Take 2007's "The Mist" as an example, where the conclusion is a hopelessly bleak one, underscoring the tragedy of the deaths that could have been completely avoided. Irrespective of how you feel about this Stephen King adaptation, the ending of Sam Raimi's "Drag Me To Hell" still manages to shock with its unflinching brutality.
Crafted as a morality tale, "Drag Me To Hell" subverts the conventional trope of a happy ending, where the protagonist is literally dragged into the bowels of hell when we least expect it. There is no attempt at justifying such a shocking fate, as Raimi cuts to the title card immediately, reiterating that he intended to remain true to the word of his title all along. This opens the avenues for various...

Halloween is approaching, which means now is the best time of year to watch horror movies all night long for days on end. Problem is, there are so many scary movies to choose from that it’s hard not to get lost in the streaming service shuffle, scrolling aimlessly as dozens of movies you kind of want to watch fly across your screen. You can ultimately end up forgetting why you were looking in the first place.
To help narrow things down, we’ve compiled a list of the best horror movies streaming on Hulu right now, from obscure indie midnight movies to tried-and-true horror staples, to genre-bending modern classics.

There are few things more fun than watching an expert horror storyteller get down with their bad side. Think Sam Raimi subjecting poor Alison Lohman to all manner of gross, gooey torment in "Drag Me to Hell" or James Wan writing his love letter to the Giallo genre in big bloody splashes with "Malignant." If the horror movie and TV show-producing machine that is Mike Flanagan is to be believed, then he's about to unleash his own wild vision on the world with "The Fall of the House of Usher."
Created by Flanagan, the upcoming Netflix miniseries adapts Edgar Allan Poe's short story of the same name (which was first published in 1839) while mixing in elements both original and borrowed from the author's other horror literature. Alison Lohman had a strong run in the early 2000s, with commendable turns for directors like Tim Burton and Ridley Scott in Big Fish and Matchstick Men. And then, after a short string of movies both mainstream and forgettable, she headlined Sam Raimi’s stellar Drag Me to Hell. And after that…not so much–on the cinematic front, at least.
Now, Alison Lohman has spoken about leaving Hollywood for other goals. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lohman, who is now 43, discussed the perks of exiting Tinseltown, saying she enjoys hardly getting recognized in public. “The part that I do like about anonymity is when you meet someone and they don’t know who you are, they are so different towards you. That’s what you miss as a famous actor because people treat you so differently and it’s true.”

Alison Lohman rarely gets recognized anymore, and that’s just the way she likes it.
It helps that Lohman has long since left Hollywood, an industry that made anonymity impossible for her in the early aughts when the Palm Springs native was one of the most in-demand talents in town. A self-described shy child who was obsessed with musicals, Lohman got her start on stage before her 10th birthday by performing in community theater in the desert in productions of The Sound of Music, Kiss Me, Kate and Annie before moving to Los Angeles around the time she turned 18.
Though she initially toyed with the idea of a music career or studying drama at NYU (where she got accepted), Lohman’s destiny unfolded on the West Coast where acting work came quickly and consistently, mostly on the small screen to start with bit...

It’s always fun to find one of your favorite actors in a horror movie. It’s especially fun to notice an actor in an upcoming horror movie, move to check their IMDb and notice a litany of other horror movies you’d maybe forgotten they starred in. But to go and watch all of said actors horror movies in sequential order? I know, I know. Somebody better stop me because I’m a wild person with no regard for danger. C’mon, let’s get nuts.
Justin Long is the subject of this completist exercise in honor of his not one but two recently released horror movies: Barbarian (In theaters) and House of Darkness (Currently available for rent on VOD). I’ve always considered him an underrated and charismatic actor with the ability to walk the line between “cool guy” and “total dork” as they are so often the same in real life.

It feels safe to state that unless she was pointed out in one movie or another that a lot of people might have forgotten Alison Lohman’s name at this point unless they were big fans of hers during her career. As of now, she’s been retired for the past five years since following her last well-known movie, Drag Me to Hell, she acted in a few other titles and then decided to step away from the business to focus on her family and to become an online acting coach. During her time in the business though she did get plenty

From an armed robber to a candlestick, we take a look at 10 of Ewan McGregor's most overlooked roles.
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
Ewan McGregor is a popular and Golden Globe-winning actor, and his great performances in films like Trainspotting, Moulin Rouge!, Fargo, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, and, of course, several Star Wars movies are well known. He's recently won plaudits for his tortured turn in Stephen King adaptation Doctor Sleep, and is soon to be reprising his role as Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi in an upcoming Disney+ series. But McGregor has such a full filmography, spanning 25 years and counting, that it’s easy to overlook some of his less lauded performances.
Here, we’ve collected 10 of his performances that are deserving of attention, though some of them are found in not-so-great films or forgotten television shows, they are still of great...

Though Sam Raimi hasn’t directed a horror flick since 2009’s fantastic Drag Me To Hell, it’s fair to say that the Evil Dead creator still holds a special place in horror fans’ dark, beating hearts. From producing creepy creature features like Crawl, to more traditional supernatural thrillers, like The Messengers and The Grudge, Raimi has always been an active proponent for gore-hounds’ favourite genre in cinema.
What’s truly surprising, then, is the fact that the American filmmaker’s last big horror hit, Drag Me To Hell, never got a sequel. Despite raking in a solid $90.8 million at the box office, while also resonating really well with both critics and fans alike, Raimi’s last horror pic is very much screaming out for some kind of a sequel, right?
Interestingly, in a recent interview with Bloody Disgusting, the director discussed Drag Me To Hell and reminisced about the...

One of my favorite Sam Raimi movies was his 2009 horror thriller Drag Me To Hell, which starred Alison Lohman and Justin Long. The film told such a fun horror story and I’ve always wanted to see a sequel to it, but unfortunately it didn’t really do that well at the box office. I always thought that this film could awesomely cross over with the Evil Dead franchise.
In case you need a reminder, at the end of the film, Lohman’s character Christine was was dragged down to hell as her boyfriend watched in horror. I always thought it would have been awesome if once she got down there she ran into Ash who also could have been dragged to hell and they team up to escape. That’s my idea! Justin Long, however, has a very different vision for the sequel that would obviously center around his character,...

In Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Black Cat” (1843) a large feline named Pluto follows the narrator “with a pertinacity which it would be difficult to make the reader comprehend.” Poe’s narrator struggles to put into words how, exactly, this pursuit fills him with terror. Cinema has provided a solution to capturing the elusive, uncanny cat: its quiet steps, eerily graceful jumps, gleaming eyes, and mythologized ability to dodge death nine-fold. Unlike dogs, cats are more independent and can’t be relied on to come when they’re called. Cats are expert at hiding, fitting into unbelievably tiny spaces, and their claws are extremely sharp. Hovering in the liminal field between wilderness and domestication, the house cat is often used in horror to parallel the genre’s interest in showing the disintegration of the home or domestic life into chaos. Poe’s story has been loosely adapted as a horror film several times,...

Sam Raimi was a cool and exciting horror director at one point, but the shine started to wear off (that’s a pun you’ll get later) somewhere around 2007 when he made that bad Spider-Man movie. Drag Me To Hell was fun, but it went off the rails a bit when Alison Lohman killed that very cute cat, and nobody really needs…...

Let’s all hope Hollywood has got this one wrong…
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
Back in the old days, paintings, carvings and engravings of Hell were used to shock sinners into mending their ways – promising them an eternity of pain and suffering, usually at the end of a red hot poker. Most world religions have their own ideas about what Hell looks like, but filmmakers have since thrown in a lot of their own ideas too – with movie villains heading everywhere from fiery torture caves and spikey chasms to bottomless voids and empty prison cells.
Personally, we’re hoping for the one in The Good Place (because at least Ted Danson will be there), but almost anything is better than spending any time in any of the Hells on this list…

Twenty years, in terms of horror films, doesn’t sound all that long. Yet it adds up to a generation, and the list below reflects that. It’s a catalog of the cinematic fears and obsessions that define an era. The list is also destined to start a few fights. So feel free to object, and to point out the dozens of terrific films I left out.
20. The Babadook (2014)
It’s scrappy and, at times, a little short on atmosphere, but Jennifer Kent’s sinister maternal psychodrama puts you inside the head of a woman on the verge like no horror film since “Repulsion.” It’s set in Australia, where Amelia (Essie Davis) was widowed in a car crash the night she gave birth to her son (Noah Wiseman), who is now six. (Her husband was driving.) The son is deeply troubled, but not nearly so much as his mother,...

For a deeply satisfying movie that hinges on a career-defining performance from one of modern cinema’s most fascinating stars, Ridley Scott’s “Matchstick Men” has a strange way of falling through the cracks. Released to a tepid response in September 2003, this slippery tale of a con artist with a guilty conscience was too much of a tweener to find the audience it deserved, and — much like its twitchy protagonist — was also conflicted about swindling people out of their money. For a major Hollywood film that climaxes with a bare-assed Nicolas Cage running around an L.A. parking garage, its “B” Cinemascore is borderline miraculous.
Even now, 15 years to the month since its debut, “Matchstick Men” lurks in the dark recesses of basic cable. Surf a few channels up from the big game on a Sunday afternoon and you’ll often find it playing on a semi-automatic loop, as if...

Beyond Jerry Bruckheimer's The Rock and Con Air, here are a handful of Nicolas Cage films worth seeking out.
It’s very easy to get lost with Nicolas Cage. With ‘Cage Rage’ memes, the tales of celebrity eccentricity (remember when he turned on Bath’s Christmas lights?) and the continued fascination surrounding his unmade Superman film, you’d be forgiven for losing sight of the fact that he’s a bona fide, megawatt movie star. On March 9 he’s back with a new role in Brian Taylor’s Mom and Dad, playing a father who violently turns against his own offspring during an outbreak of parental mass hysteria.
In the hands of Crank co-director Taylor we get to see two sides of Cage: the understated everyman and the off-the-scale rage machine. It’s this kind of role, beyond the blockbuster carnage of The Rock and Con Air,...

What most fans of Alison Lohman know is that she has been absent from the acting scene for about 5 years – and counting. Want to enhance your horror movie? Make sure you sign up a cat...
This feature contains broad spoilers for several horror movies featuring cats, including Alien, Cat People, Drag Me To Hell, Fallen, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, Pet Sematary and The Voices.
The relationship between humans and cats over time has given way to a number of cultural impressions and outright superstitions. Ancient Egyptians associated them with gods. In the Middle Ages, they were linked with witches and killed en masse, which probably hastened the spread of the Black Plague through the rodent population. And in the modern day, it's interchangeably lucky or not if a black cat crosses your path.
Like anything with such a wide array of symbolic links, movies have presented cats as characters in different ways over the years. It's their abiding association with the supernatural – whether as an omen...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: In light of the recent “Roseanne” revival news, which sitcom would you like to see a revival of? (Let’s assume this is feasible from a network, talent, production, etc. standpoint.)

So many great sitcoms are personality driven, which makes it hard to remember great premises worth reviving. (And also, when I think about some of my ‘90s favorites, like “Step by Step” or “Friends,” it’s like… Oh, maybe there’s nothing new under the sun.)

"Are you ready to crush some criminal cranium?" What in the world is this?! A trailer has arrived for a film called Officer Downe, adapted from the graphic novel of the same name. It's about a zombie police officer in the future who is resurrected every time he dies, cleaning up the streets of Los Angeles the only way he knows how - "with extreme prejudice and a total disdain for gun-running nuns and kung fu criminals." Kim Coates stars as Officer Downe, with a fun cast including Sam Witwer, Lauren Vélez, Alison Lohman, Lindsay Pulsipher, Reno Wilson, Tyler Ross and filmmaker Mark Neveldine (who also produced it). This looks totally whacko, but also kind of badass, like Judge Dredd if it were a low budget D-movie. Enjoy. "My city's gone to hell..." As the titular character in Officer Downe, Kim Coates takes on an eclectic array of criminals in the film's official trailer.
