Legendary country star Dolly Parton was an uncredited executive producer on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series, as the show came from her production company Sandollar Productions, which she co-founded with her former manager, Sandy Gallin. So if there’s anyone who should have an idea of what’s going on with the Buffy reboot that was announced some years back, it’s Dolly – and she said it’s still in the works.
Five and a half years have gone by since it was announced that a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was in development with Monica Owusu-Breen, co-creator of the TV show Midnight, Texas, writing, executive producing, and serving as showrunner. It was said that the new show would be “contemporary, building on the mythology of the original”. A year and a half ago, Owusu-Breen’s fellow executive producer Gail Berman said the project was “on pause...

Don't let the title fool you: "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" isn't the only one of her kind. The "Slayer" line goes back millennia, and when one falls, another young girl is called on by destiny. In the season 1 finale, "Prophecy Girl," Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) briefly dies but is revived. The writers took advantage of that technicality in season 2 to introduce another slayer, Kendra (Bianca Lawson) — but she met a swift end.
Enter Faith Lehane (no relation to Dennis) in season 3, played by Eliza Dushku and sharing her actress' Boston origins. Her name is a virtue, but Faith is a rebel — so much so, she bounces from ally to enemy and then back again. In an interview with "Buffy" writers and producers, they discussed how, from the beginning, Faith was meant to be a "psycho" Slayer who would be a foil for Buffy. Marti Noxon called her Buffy's "shadow self,...

Alyson Hannigan was brilliant in the role of Willow Rosenberg on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series, which ran for a total of seven seasons and 144 episodes, beginning in 1997 and wrapping up in 2003… But she didn’t join the show until the pilot was reshot, replacing the previously cast Riff Regan as Willow. And during an interview with Shut Up Evan, Melanie Lynskey confirmed that she was also a potential Willow.
Interviewer Evan Ross Katz had been told by Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar that the show’s creator Joss Whedon had envisioned Lynskey (only known from Heavenly Creatures at the time) as Willow when he was writing the pilot script, but Lynskey, who is from New Zealand, couldn’t audition because there was an issue with her visa. Katz asked Lynskey about that and she replied, “It is basically true. It was kind of a visa issue, but...

The 54th NAACP Image Awards, which aired on CBS from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium Saturday night, has wrapped. Queen Latifah hosted the proceedings, which honored the best in Black entertainment for the proceeding year. Inclusive awards that they are, the Image Awards often give a hat-tip to performers of color who aren’t Black, though: Tenoch Huerta Mejía won Best Supporting Actor for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” which also won Outstanding Motion Picture.

We are living in an age of TV show revivals. By the end of this month, Night Court will even be back on the air. But don’t get your hopes up for a revival of Buffy the Vampire Slayer that would bring Sarah Michelle Gellar back in the title role. While speaking with SFX Magazine (via Movieweb), Gellar said she wouldn’t want to play Buffy ever again.
When asked if she’s interested in reprising the role, Gellar answered, “I’m not. I am very proud of the show that we created and it doesn’t need to be done. We wrapped that up. I am all for them continuing the story, because there’s the story of female empowerment. I love the way the show was left: ‘Every girl who has the power can have the power.’ It’s set up perfectly for someone else to have the power.

After seven seasons, the Bordelon family’s journey came to an end. “Queen Sugar” signed off on Tuesday night with a poetic series finale centered around the importance of family — in all its forms.
Series creator Ava DuVernay wrote the finale, titled “For They Existed,” and returned to the director’s chair for the first time since helming the pilot and second episode.
In Variety’s Power of Women cover story celebrating the series’ legacy, the Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated filmmaker said she was “euphoric” about bookending the series as director and insisted she was wholly “satisfied” with the farewell ode.
“‘Queen Sugar’ is the longest commitment I’ve ever had — and we’re talking relationships too — and I did my very best every single day,” DuVernay explained, sitting alongside executive producer Oprah Winfrey. “In the end, there was no sadness; I was just so pleased, so proud. My wood floor is barely visible. I’m organizing, which inevitably turns into sitting and thumbing through remnants from episodes of TV shows I’ve had the honor to direct. I have Post-Its in every size. Call sheets and shot lists that have made their way home in pockets and backpacks. (I’m still not fully down with Scriptation — don’t tell Rachel Raimist and Valerie Weiss!) And I have piles of scripts. The tallest stack is from Queen Sugar.
There is no way to quickly answer what Ava DuVernay’s decision to push for hiring female directors on Queen Sugar has done for my career other than to say I don’t think I would have a career directing for television if she didn’t. Ava making this decision, and Oprah Winfrey agreeing (the series airs on OWN), ushered an incredibly needed change into the industry.

When “Queen Sugar” star Dawn-Lyen Gardner’s Charley Bordelon was missing from the trailer and key art for Season 7 of the OWN drama series, fans questioned where the middle Bordelon sibling had gone.
When the footage debuted, Variety reported that Gardner would not be a series regular for the final season’s 13 episodes, noting that at the end of Season 6, the character made her reconciliation with estranged husband Davis (Timon Kyle Durrett) more official, accepting his remarriage proposal and planning to move back to Los Angeles. With the primary action of Season 7 taking place in the fictional Louisiana parish of St. Josephine, Charley’s storyline would instead be tracked in a number of episodes across the season.
But ahead of the debut of Tuesday’s season premiere, Gardner took to social media to explain that she “did not participate” in the making of the show’s final hours.

It’s nearly time for “Queen Sugar” fans to “take flight” one last time, as we prepare to say goodbye to the Bordelon family.
OWN has released the official trailer for the seventh and final season of the critically acclaimed drama, created by Ava DuVernay and executive produced by Oprah Winfrey, which begins Tuesday, Sept. 6.
“If we do not honor our past, we dishonor our future. Listen,” says Rutina Wesley’s Nova, the eldest Bordelon sibling, as the clip begins, previewing the tense and tender scenes that will play out over the next 13 episodes.

Four years have passed since it was announced that a reboot of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series was in the works with Monica Owusu-Breen, co-creator of the TV show Midnight, Texas, writing, executive producing, and serving as showrunner. And since four years have gone by without any further word on the reboot, a lot of fans have probably forgotten that announcement had even happened. (I sure did.) So it’s no surprise to hear from Owusu-Breen’s fellow executive producer Gail Berman (via TV Line) that the reboot is “on pause”.
After the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot was announced, Owusu-Breen sent out the following statement:
For some genre writers it’s Star Wars.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is my Star Wars.
Before I became a writer, I was a fan. For seven seasons, I watched Buffy Summers grow up, find love, kill that love. I watched her fight,...

Lucy Hale chatted with TV Line about the forthcoming Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin.

"When I was doing Pretty Little Liars, I was always thinking about the next year," she said of her time on the series.
"I was never in the moment, so I missed a lot of the little moments."
"We were worrying about things we shouldn’t be worrying about," Hale added.
The former star went on to give some advice to the new stars.
"It’s very vague, but my advice is just to enjoy it."

“Queen Sugar” has been renewed for Season 7 at OWN, with that season set to be the show’s last. Writing on the new season has begun, with production set to begin in early 2022.
“To everything, there is a season,” said series creator Ava DuVernay. “And my producing partner Paul Garnes and I have had seven gorgeous seasons making ‘Queen Sugar’ with a remarkable cast and crew, alongside our partners at OWN and Warner Bros. Television. To write and produce seven seasons of a modern drama centered on a Black family is a radical act in our industry and a triumph that has far exceeded every hope I held. Now I feel strongly that the story, which began as a sunrise of a suggestion from Oprah, is ready for its sunset as a dream fully realized. ‘Queen Sugar’ has been one of the true joys of my career and my gratitude is buoyant and boundless.

Gearing up for Tuesdays this fall? The TV lineup has something for everyone with titles like Queen Sugar, The Flash, The Bachelorette, and more returning. Below, we’re rounding up a few of the highly-anticipated titles. Queen Sugar Louisiana’s Bordelon family face life’s struggles together, which will be as necessary as ever in the drama’s sixth season. Stressed about his growing family with wife Darla (Bianca Lawson), Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe) crosses moral (and legal) lines. “He wants to do whatever he can to provide for his unborn baby,” says producing director Lisa France. His outspoken sister, investigative journalist Nova (Rutina Wesley), “experiences some strong reactions to those she’s trying to expose,” France adds. At least impassioned sibling Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner) is in a good place as she (secretly) romances her reformed ex-husband, Davis (Timon Kyle Durrett). The Bachelorette (Credit: ABC/Sami Drasin) The Bachelorette After...

Maia Reficco will play Noa, a striving, sardonic track star who's working hard to get her life back to normal after a summer spent in juvenile detention.

The DuVernay and showrunner Anthony Sparks co-penned Season 5 finale saw a Covid infected Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner) reach out to ex-husband Davis West (Timon Kyle Durrent) and find new depths to the initial dismay of...

Tuesday’s Season 5 premiere of Queen Sugar perfectly captured that “calm before the storm” vibe in the early months of 2020 before the Covid pandemic turned the world as we knew it upside down.
