The Tony Awards Administration Committee met for the third time during the 2023-2024 Broadway season on April 19, to discuss eligibility of 8 productions for the 77th Annual Tony Awards in 2024.
They discussed eight productions: “Days of Wine and Roses,” “Doubt,” “The Notebook,” “An Enemy of the People,” “Water for Elephants,” “The Who’s Tommy,” “The Outsiders” and “Lempicka.” The group also met during the winter to discuss late fall and winter openings, but those determinations were not made public until now. Those shows include: “I Need That,” “Harmony,” “Spamalot,” “How to Dance in Ohio,” “Appropriate” and “Prayer for the French Republic.”
The most notable ruling is that “Appropriate” will compete as a revival. The hit play from Branden Jacobs-Jenkins has never been seen on Broadway before this season, but previously enjoyed a successful Off-Broadway run with a different director and cast. Drake Bell is continuing to tell his story in the latest episode of ID’s “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV” documentary. Titled “Breaking the Silence,” the fifth episode, which aired on Sunday, April 7, began with Bell speaking to host Soledad O’Brien about what has happened since he came forward for the first time about being sexually assaulted by Brian Peck.
O’Brien specifically asked Bell, who spoke virtually from Mexico City, about Will Friedle and Rider Strong, two of the actors who wrote character letters for Peck in the 2003 case. The duo spoke about the decision to do so on their podcast, but hearing their comments didn’t change how Bell felt about that day in court, he said.

On Sunday, Investigation Discovery aired a bonus episode of Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, the fifth following its four-part series, titled “Breaking the Silence.”
One of the subjects in the new episode is Raquel Lee Bolleau. As a Season One regular on The Amanda Show, a comedy sketch show starring Amanda Bynes, Bolleau fondly remembers making on-set Slurpees, signing autographs, and celebrating her 13th birthday. But beyond the glamor of preteen stardom, Bolleau tells Rolling Stone she felt ignored by the show’s creator Dan Schneider.

The Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV directors plan to continue to investigate kids entertainment in Hollywood, even after dropping their latest bonus episode on Sunday with Quiet on Set: Breaking The Silence.
“We’re hearing calls for federal legislation,” series co-director Mary Robertson tells The Hollywood Reporter when talking about next steps. “At the moment there is no federal legislation that governs children who work in entertainment, or that regulates children working in entertainment.”
The bonus episode, hosted by Soledad O’Brien, delves deeper into the claims surrounding Dan Schneider and the Nickelodeon series he created and ran. The formerly prolific kids TV producer has faced allegations of abuse, sexism, racism and inappropriate behavior involving underage stars and crewmembers on his shows since the release of the two-part docuseries on March 17 and 18. (He responded with a 19-minute apology video.)

Lorne Michaels is an expert at celebrating the legacy of “Saturday Night Live.” The show’s creator has produced variety specials for the NBC program’s 15th anniversary, 25th anniversary and 40th anniversary, so the upcoming 50th season should have a highly entertaining spectacle. Nothing less than a three-hour event would be expected, but how else should “SNL” celebrate the golden anniversary season, which would begin in the autumn of 2024 and continue through May, 2025?
Here is our exciting, fun suggestion for a way to go above and beyond for the live special. Over the course of a 20-22 episode season, NBC would certainly have almost every episode featuring the current cast along with hot guest hosts and musical guests. However, for the other five episodes spread out over several months, devote an entire 90 minutes to each previous decade. Invite back the biggest cast members from a decade along with well-known guest hosts and music stars.

It’s a feat only 29 other SNL cast members have pulled off: With tonight’s episode of Saturday Night Live, Heidi Gardner has appeared in 500 sketches.
That’s according to longtime SNL statistician Mike Murray, who hosts The Saturday Night Network’s weekly SNL by the Numbers podcast. (Full disclosure: The Snn is LateNighter’s podcast partner.)
Tonight’s game show sketch “Couple Goals” was Gardner’s 500th sketch.
Gardner, who’s in her seventh SNL season, is only the 30th cast member to hit the 500 sketch milestone, an honor she shares with two other current cast members, Mikey Day and (of course) Kenan Thompson, whose 21 seasons on the show put him at the top of the list.

Drake Bell revealed on the ID docu-series Quiet On Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV that he was sexually assaulted by former Nickelodeon dialogue coach Brian Peck.

Various actors and entertainment industry insiders wrote letters in support of Brian Peck, a voice coach and Nickelodeon actor who was convicted of child sexual abuse, as revealed in Investigation Discovery’s Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV.
As explained in the docuseries that aired Sunday and Monday nights, Peck was arrested in August 2003 on 11 charges of child sexual abuse. He was sentenced to 16 months in prison in October 2004 and was registered as a sex offender. At the time, the identity of the child actor who was abused by Peck was unknown publicly, and the minor was referred to as John Doe in court documents. The majority of the records were sealed, with details hidden from the public. After nearly 20 years, the documents were unsealed for the documentary.

Last week, news broke that Bill Hader would voice the lead in Warner Bros. new fully animated movie The Cat in the Hat, based on Dr. Seuss’ 1957 classic children’s book. Today, the studio confirmed that the film will hit theaters in March 2026, with Hader joined by current SNL player Bowen Yang and longtime SNL writer Paula Pell, as well as Quinta Brunson, Matt Berry, and Xochitl Gomez.
Hader is a seasoned voice actor whose talent has won him roles in Sausage Party, Toy Story 4, and Bob’s Burgers, so it’s easy to see, or rather, hear, why WB would turn to Hader for its new Cat in the Hat movie — but in this case, Warner Bros. execs also had a visual aid, though it’s up for debate whether it helped Hader’s case or hurt it.

Last time Dakota Johnson was on Saturday Night Live, she was involved in a minor controversy.
In March 2015, when she last hosted the NBC show, Johnson starred in a sketch lampooning a car commercial with an Isis twist.
The sketch, which you can see below, saw Johnson seemingly dropped off at the airport by her dad, played by Taran Killam, seemingly to go join the army.
However, it turned out she was leaving to go join the terrorist group. “Dad, it’s just Isis,” she says as she exits.
Tonight, Johnson poked fun at the controversy in a new sketch. In another skit involving airports, Johnson has lost her bag and is trying to retrieve it with some help with Devon Walker and Keenan Thompson.
“Respectfully, for all I know, this could be an Isis bag,” says Walker.
“You think I’m in Isis?,” asks Johnson.

Chicago – A long time ago (1978) in an America far far away, the one and only showing of the “Star Wars Holiday Special” took place on CBS-tv. Infamously miscast and difficult to watch, the history of the show is chronicled in a new doc “A Disturbance in the Force,” co-directed by Jeremy Coon and Steven Kozak.
Rating: 5.0/5.0
In 1977, “Star Wars” became a cultural phenomenon that single-handedly revitalized a stagnant film industry, and forever changed how films were sold, made, and marketed. On November 17th, 1978, CBS aired the two-hour “Star Wars Holiday Special” and was watched by 13 million people. It never re-aired and is considered one of the worst shows to ever be broadcast on national TV. “A Disturbance in the Force” co-directors Jeremy Coon and Steve Kozak combine celebrity insight – including Seth Green, Donny Osmond and Kevin Smith – archival/participant interviews and broadcast history perspective to understand why this show was created.

If you want a risk-taking Broadway musical that weaponizes disco-glamour to tell a story of crumbling democracy, I hope you already invested in a ticket to the immersion of "Here Lies Love" in its dying breath. If you want a work of artistic and personal self-reflection, see the "Merrily We Roll Along" revival. But if you hunger for Broadway-based belly laughs, you have two musical options: "Gutenberg! The Musical!" or the "Monty Python's Spamalot" revival.
"Lovingly ripped off" from the 1975 "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" as well as other "Monty Python" media, "Spamalot" reigned for 1,575 performances from its 2005 Broadway premiere. Transported from the Kennedy Center run in May 2023, this Broadway revival at the St. James Theatre serves up the oldies with adequate variance to its secondhand Pythonesque humor.
From the moment the Arthurian tale opens with an irrelevant Finland number, anyone who has not seen anything "Monty Python" is in for hijinks.

Why did George Lucas allow the Star Wars Holiday Special to take place? A Disturbance in the Force does a deep dive into the 1978 special watched by millions and then locked away in a vault, never to be screened again.
“After almost 45 years of being the butt of jokes, we had to unlock all the secrets behind the Holiday Special. Its influence on pop culture has only increased over the last two decades and, also, add the fact that it is a part of the Star Wars filmography – and a hidden one at that – only adds to its mystique. Now is finally the time after all these years to get answers about how the Holiday Special happened,” explained co-directors and producers Jeremy Coon and Steve Kozak.

The story behind the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special is the focus of the documentary A Disturbance in the Force, which — following its premiere at Sundance earlier this year — will head to streaming and DVD this December.
The ill-fated special, which aired Thanksgiving weekend in 1978, is now legend: Fresh off the success of Star Wars, George Lucas was talked into capitalizing on the craze in the form of a holiday-themed TV special, but what resulted was a “Life Day” celebration that hued closer to a Seventies variety show than The Mandalorian.

“Just think,” Sir Lancelot (Taran Killam) muses as he celebrates his gay wedding at the end of Monty Python’s Spamalot. “In a thousand-and-eighteen years time, this will still be controversial.” Killam puts special emphasis on the “eighteen,” an addition to the script that nods to the supposed ways in which Spamalot remains relevant nearly two decades after the Tony-winning musical adaptation of Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam’s 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail tore up the 2004-2005 Broadway season.
The construction of the joke suggests that not much has changed—either for good or ill—in the past decades. That’s hardly true, because when Hank Azaria delivered the punchline in 2005, gay marriage wouldn’t be legalized in New York State for another six years. It’s surprising how much of Spamalot’s humor, especially the gay jokes, now feels rooted in an earlier time. Even peppered...

Leslie Jones described her time on “Saturday Night Live” as repetitive once she got pigeonholed into certain types of comedic roles on the sketch comedy show.
In an interview with NPR, the comedian, whose new memoir “Leslie F*cking Jones” was released this week, said she felt like “SNL” made her “a caricature of myself.”
“‘SNL,’ they take that one [trope] and they wring it. They wring it because that’s the machine,” Jones said. “So whatever it is that I’m giving that they’re so happy about, they feel like it’s got to be that all the time or something like that.”
Jones, who joined the cast sketch comedy show at the age of 47 in 2014, described the repetitive trope she felt trapped into in detail.
“Either I’m trying to love on the white boys or beat up on the white boys, or I’m doing something loud,...
