Gitanjali Kapila is a Chicago-based filmmaker and academic. She is in post-production on two short films: Bat which shot March 2019 and Groped which shot November 2019. In October 2018 she completed Breathing above the Treeline which enjoyed a robust reception on the festival circuit. It had 14 live screenings world-wide. It was also awarded 4 Best Narrative Short Film Awards as well as nominated in several categories. In addition, Bat was awarded an Illinois Arts Council Grant in 2019 and a School of the Art Institute faculty enrichment grant in 2020 to cover the costs of post-production. Groped was most recently awarded a faculty enrichment grant from the School of the Art Institute in April 2021. Gitanjali is in development on a feature drama, Double Happiness. She is a previous Nicholl Fellowships Quarterfinalist; placed in the top 15% of the Nicholl Fellowships in 2020; has advanced to the second round of Sundance; and was a finalist for the Raine Filmmaker Award. She received her MFA from Columbia University in writing and directing.
