His grandfather, Peter Maivia, was a Samoan wrestler of great renown, while his father Rocky Johnson was the first Black Georgia Heavyweight Champion. However, that is not all when it comes to Johnson’s heroic wrestling lineage, as his grandmother, the wife of Peter Maivia had a pretty storied career of her own!

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson recently opened up about one of the regrets he has.
The actor shared a video on Instagram of his father accepting a WWE belt for making pro-wrestling history in 1983 when he and Tony Atlas became the first-ever Black Heavyweight Tag Team champions. In the social media post, a young Johnson can be seen sitting in the audience after the match, celebrating his father’s win.
“Just delivering flowers to heaven to my old man, Rocky ‘Soulman’ Johnson,” the former wrestler began his lengthy caption. “He came up the hard way, and trail-blazed for all of us men of color – in any sport & level of entertainment. But it was also very important to him to pave the way for all men, any color – it didn’t matter.”
He continued, “My regret in this life is that I never had a chance to say goodbye to him, because he died suddenly.

Actor and professional wrestler Dwayne Johnson announced earlier this week that he would be producing a biopic on one of the greatest wrestlers of all time- Ric Flair. The actor mentioned that Flair was a hero to him while he was an up-and-coming wrestler in the WWE and spoke of the type of heroic image that the Nature Boy had in his golden age.
Johnson also spoke about the personal connection he shared with Flair, as the latter and Johnson’s father Rocky Johnson fought together in the National Wrestling Alliance. While the project is still in its nascent stages, a potential lead for the role could be Dwayne Johnson’s Baywatch co-star Zac Efron The actor has proved that he is perfect for the role as he recently starred in the wrestling film The Iron Claw.

Hollywood star Dwayne Johnson is producing a film based on the life of his wrestling hero Ric Flair, and considers it a “personal” project. Johnson said on X on: “Woo! As a wild kid, who grew up in the wild world of professional wrestling, I idolised, ‘The Nature Boy’ Ric Flair. He was one of my heroes. And once I broke into the wrestling business and began to spill my own sweat and blood in arenas across America – my reverence for Ric turned to great respect.
“Because I realised just how rare and almost impossible it is to truly disrupt the wrestling business, and truly change the game – and that’s exactly what Ric Flair did.”
He added that Ric Flair had a relentless passion to be the greatest of all time.
“But with achieving that Goat status – he also sacrificed it all and paid a heavy price. “And lived to tell the story.

Dwayne Johnson has come a long way from his days as a debuting wrestler. But at first, becoming a wrestler didn’t seem like the occupation that would serve Johnson well in the long run. That was especially true when his family briefly lived a similar lifestyle as Mickey Rourke’s character in The Wrestler.

Endeavor’s publicly traded Tko Group has named Dwayne Johnson to its board of directors, effective today. The WWE superstar has also secured full ownership of the trademarked name The Rock.
Tko is the parent company of WWE and UFC.
The name The Rock is derived from his father, WWE Hall of Famer Rocky Johnson, who was the first Black champion in WWE history (alongside partner Tony Atlas). Johnson’s grandfather, Peter Maivia, a Samoan-American professional wrestler, was posthumously inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2008.
Rock and WWE have inked a merchandising agreement that provides for promotion, licensing, and other services.
“I am thrilled to partner with Dwayne and welcome his immense talent to Tko’s Board. Dwayne brings an incredible track record of creating content and building globally recognized consumer brands, and he will play a key role in realizing our ambitions for Tko,” said Tko (and Endeavor) CEO Ariel Emanuel.

Nostalgia operates on 20-year cycles — that's why the late 1990s produced a series aptly titled, "That '70s Show." Many supporting characters and guest stars were, naturally, '70s cultural icons. Tommy Chong repurposed his comic persona as Leo, a former hippie and owner of the local photo shop. Dwayne Johnson guest-starred as his own father, wrestler Rocky Johnson, while Billy Dee Williams played a "Star Wars" obsessed preacher.
One of these more prominent faces, at least during the first three seasons, was the late Tanya Roberts as Midge Pinciotti, the absent-minded mother of Donna (Laura Prepon). It's likely that Roberts' role as...

Tuesday’s episode of “Young Rock” is a special one. Not only does the installment chronicle Dwayne Johnson’s first-ever WWF match, but the episode was written by those who are incredibly familiar with the events chronicled within: Johnson, Hiram Garcia and Brian Gewirtz.
The episode, titled “Corpus Christi,” marks Johnson and Garcia’s screenwriting debut, while Gewirtz was a longtime head writer for WWE. Combined, the trio distilled a wealth of knowledge and memories into a half-hour episode that also includes appearances by wrestling legends like Stone Cold Steve Austin and Triple H – a task that they admitted was difficult.
“There’s so much story to tell in that limited space, but Dwayne’s got a great memory when it comes to those moments – especially these moments that are so pivotal for him – so he’s a great resource for us,” Garcia (who serves as president of production at...

Dwayne Johnson is making his way into the ring on Young Rock. In E! News' exclusive sneak peek of April 12's all-new episode, college-age Dewey, a.k.a Rock (Uli Latukefu), has accepted his NFL fate and is now focused on pursuing a career in wrestling. With help from his father, Rocky Johnson (Joseph Lee Anderson), Dewey begins an intense training regimen while trying to learn the fundamentals of the sport. To aid in the latter, Rocky presents his son with his first opponent: a piece of string. "Punch as close as you can without moving the string," Rocky instructs him. "If you break this string's nose, you get fired and you get your ass whooped in the back." With...

In the sixth episode of new NBC sitcom “Young Rock,” based on the real life of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, his father, Rocky Johnson (Joseph Lee Anderson), prepares for and then wrestles in a Battle Royal. The way the match was written, there were 18 performers who would take each other out one, or a few, at a time, leaving Rocky to become the Polynesian Pacific champion. It’s a stunt-heavy sequence that includes performers hitting each other with chairs. Meanwhile Lia (Ana Tuisila) thinks Rocky is going to cross her and leave for a rival wrestling company. So, unbeknownst to Rocky, she changes the outcome at the last minute so that the Iron Sheik (Brett Azar) wins. This results in an emotional realization within the ring for Rocky, as well as an impromptu compromise from both men as to how exactly he will lose.

“Young Rock” stars Dwayne Johnson as himself as he runs for president in 2032 with weekly flashbacks to one of three periods of his life: when he was 10, 15 and a college student at the University of Miami. To say that casting three young versions of the man who would grow up to be The Rock was a huge endeavor would be an understatement.
“It was a big, big search because you’re matching the real person. So what we did is we were given some reference photos just to see what he looked like at age 10, age 15 and then his college years,” casting director Michael V. We're already hooked on CBS's Young Rock, a sitcom based on Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's adolescence. Johnson's show is a hilarious look at his eccentric upbringing, and his experiences growing up with his wrestling icon dad Rocky Johnson (plus all his famous wrestling pals). It's clear from watching the premiere that Rocky served as a major inspiration for Dwayne, both as a father and an athlete. While Rocky sadly passed away in 2020, there's still so much to learn about the man, the myth, and the legend who helped raise The Rock.
Rocky Johnson, otherwise known as Soul Man, was a Canadian-American WWE hall-of-famer on the scene in the 1980s. He teamed up with fellow wrestler Tony Atlas to form "The Soul Patrol," together becoming the first African-American World Tag Team Champions in WWE history. He's famous to this day as being "the king of the drop-kick."

Before he was The Rock, he was just Dwayne Johnson… or, as the wrestler-turned-movie star’s autobiographical NBC sitcom Young Rock tells us, just “Dewey.”
Young Rock hops across decades to tell The Rock’s colorful life story, and Tuesday’s series premiere kicks off in the year 2032, with Johnson (playing himself) on the campaign trail running for president (!). In an interview with Randall Park — who’s ditched acting for journalism, it seems — The Rock hits back at claims he’s a Hollywood elitist, insisting that he’s had to work hard for everything he’s ever gotten in life.

NBC’s “Young Rock” should maybe be called “Young Rocks” since there are three actors cast as Dwayne Johnson across his formative years. Adrian Groulx plays 10-year-old “Dewey” Johnson, Bradley Constant portrays Dwayne Johnson at 15 and Uli Latukefu heads to the University of Miami as the 18-year-old version of the man who would eventually become WWE Superstar The Rock.
TheWrap asked showrunner Nahnatchka Khan and the real Dwayne Johnson how this would work, casting-wise, if the comedy has an event decent run. After all, Constant’s Johnson would become Latukefu’s in just three years.

As the new teaser for Dwayne Johnson’s upcoming NBC comedy series “Young Rock” says, “Every hero has an origin story — but not a full mustache at age 15.”
The series — which is The Rock’s true-life story — will follow young Dwayne’s childhood, where he was inspired to become an athlete by his pro wrestler father Rocky Johnson. “When you dream big, the sky’s the limit,” Rocky tells his young son in the clip. And while Dwayne would eventually become a wrestling legend as the cocky, trash-talking WWE champion known as The Rock, he had his fair share of awkward moments, like when he told a girl in high school that his name was Tomas because he thought “it sounds way cooler than Dwayne.”

Hollywood superstar Dwayne Johnson is deeply hurt that he did not get a chance to say goodbye to his father, who passed away earlier this year. The actor got sentimental recalling his upsetting moment of 2020 on social media, which happened when a friend gifted him a paperweight with an image of him as a kid along with his father.
"I'm extremely hard to buy Christmas gifts for, so sentimental gifts like this mean the world to me. A family friend had this made for me," he wrote on Instagram, sharing an image of the paperweight.
"A paper weight to keep on my desk of me and my dad at the gym. I was too young to hit the weights back then, but after his workouts he'd always take me on the wrestling mats and beat my little ass. Those days were important. My old man died suddenly, earlier this year.

It will explore the rollercoaster that has shaped Johnson into the man he is today and the larger-than-life characters he's met along the way," reports Variety.
Dwayne Johnson announced the cast sharing a series of Instagram posts on Wednesday. The post shows the actors that have been selected to portray younger versions of himself and his family members on the upcoming sitcom.

NBC’s “Young Rock” has found its Young Rock — and also two slightly older (but still young) Rocks. The series about the upbringing of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has also cast the roles of dad Rocky Johnson, mom Ata Johnson and grandmother/wrestling promoter Lia Maivia.
Adrian Groulx will play 10-year-old Dwayne, Bradley Constant will play high school Dwayne and Uli Latukefu will play college Dwayne, NBC said on Wednesday.
In college, Dwayne Johnson won the NCAA National Championship in football at the University of Miami. Though his pro football career never really took off, Dwayne followed in his family footsteps to pursue a career in professional wrestling and, eventually, conquered Hollywood.
Joseph Lee Anderson has been cast as second generation pro-wrestler Rocky Johnson, Stacey Leilua will play Ata Johnson and Ana Tuisila will play Lia Maivia.
Dwayne Johnson is considered an honorary member of the famous Anoa’i wrestling family.
