When Frank Herbert wrote his science-fiction epic “Dune” in the 1960s, he instinctively made the crucial character of Liet Kynes a white man. But Denis Villeneuve sought a modern, diverse cast and he saw Kynes — who must convey integrity and authority while delicately juggling competing diplomatic interests — differently than Herbert. So in his “Dune,” Kynes is played by Sharon Duncan-Brewster, a Black woman.
Duncan-Brewster, who already made history in “Rogue One” as the first Black woman to have a speaking role in the “Star Wars” film universe, is joined in the cast by a consciously diverse collection of actors, including Stephen McKinley Henderson, Chang Chen, Babs Olusanmokun, Benjamin Clementine, Dave Bautista, and, of course, two big-name stars in Jason Momoa and Zendaya.
For his otherworldly film, Villeneuve entrusted the task of collecting this worldly roster of talent to Francine Maisler, whose resume as a casting director stretches back to “Reality Bites,...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched the fifth season of “Black Mirror,” streaming now on Netflix.
The fifth season of Netflix’s “Black Mirror” features three new tales of modern life affected by the future technology — but the worlds depicted aren’t as bleak as in past seasons.
“We sometimes get frustrated when people characterize the show as being anti-technology, because we tend to see it as a neutral thing itself — it’s just a powerful thing,” executive producer Charlie Brooker tells Variety. “So, it’s just our characters dealing with this great power.”
But, just because the episodes including “Smithereens,” starring Andrew Scott as a man who kidnaps a social app company employee (Damson Idris) as a way to get to the founder (Topher Grace), tell stories about connections enabled by technology, Brooker and executive producer Annabel Jones aren’t necessarily saying that technology...

Oscar nominee Richard E. Grant has called on Bafta and the Oscars to introduce best casting categories, saying casting work has been “astonishingly un-celebrated” by the film industry.

Casting directors remain the only job in the opening titles that doesn’t have its own Oscar category, but there’s reason to believe that will change. Already recognized by the Emmys, casting directors have made tremendous strides since they unionized in 2005 and negotiated their first contract with studios. In 2013, the guild earned its own Academy branch and received three seats at the Academy’s Board of Governors’ table. Last year, Lynn Stalmaster (“The Graduate,” “West Side Story”) received an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards, becoming the first-ever casting director to receive an Academy Award.

Fresh off an Emmy win for HBO’s “The Night Of,” Riz Ahmed will be taking on one of Shakespeare’s most famous roles. The actor is in talks to bring his adaptation of “Hamlet” to Netflix as a modern day telling of the well-known story. The version would be set in London and would hit on the uncertain political and economic climate, as well as morality, family, and corruption. He’s said to be developing the version of the character with Michael Lesslie, who wrote 2015’s “Macbeth” and “Assassin’s Creed.” Jim Wilson will produce the feature. So far, no other staffing announcements have been made, but both aforementioned films written by Lesslie were directed by Justin Kurzel, who chose Jina Jay to cast both projects. Before the “Wonder Woman” sequel gears up with Patty Jenkins, Gal Gadot might fit another project in during the first few months of 2018. The actor is in talks to star in “Ruin,” a post-wwii thriller. One of the major pleasant surprises at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, ’71, a gripping and thoughtful drama set in Belfast during The Troubles, hits theaters this Friday. The film stars soon-to-be-household-name Jack O’Connell as Gary Hook, a British serviceman trapped behind enemy lines during a night of intense sectarian unrest.
O’Connell may be best known for his work on the U.K. soap hit Skins, but 2014 set him on a trajectory for Hollywood’s A-list. While American audiences might have spotted him in 300: Rise of Artemisia, it was the critically acclaimed British prison drama Starred Up, and Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken that cemented O’Connell as the potential next “it” actor.
We caught up with O’Connell (and the film’s director, Yann Demange) back at Tiff to talk about what makes ’71 a unique war story, and how he’s handling the demands of movie stardom.

Because the Casting Society of America shifted the date of its Artios Awards, this year’s nominees include films released theatrically from July 1, 2013 to Dec. 31, 2014, paving the way for last year’s Best Picture winner to nuzzle its way into contention along with 2014 hopefuls like "Birdman," "Boyhood," and "Selma." With categories ranging from Big Budget Drama to Low Budget Comedy, nearly every film that one expects to make the cut made the cut. And then some. The Csa’s nominees put "Guardians of the Galaxy" side by side with "Wolf of Wall Street," "Whiplash" with "Inside Llewyn Davis," and Disney’s "Planes" with "Frozen." If you were dreaming of a re-evaluation of "We’re the Millers," your time is now. 2015’s bicoastal Artios Awards will be hosted by Patton Oswalt (Los Angeles) and Michael Urie (New York City). The evening will also honor two-time Academy Award®-nominee Richard Linklater ("Boyhood...

The Casting Society of America has super-sized its Artios Awards feature film nominations this year, honoring 42 different films and putting some of 2014’s top contenders in categories where they’ll compete against 2013’s awards movies.
For its 30th annual ceremony, the awards for casting directors have moved from their usual fall slot to a late-January date that placed them in the middle of awards season. To accommodate the new date, this year’s eligibility period spanned 18 months instead of a single year, encompassing films released in the second half of 2013 and all of 2014.
