James Cameron didn’t feel like the king of the world after the poor reaction to his 1998 Oscars acceptance speech.
The “Titanic” director, who won three Academy Awards for the epic period piece including Best Picture and Best Director, quoted the film by saying he felt like the “king of the world” as a winner onstage. Yet the quote was met with immediate backlash, as proven just by looking at presenter Warren Beatty’s face backstage, according to Cameron.
“I’ll tell you exactly when I first realized it [was going to be a problem]: when I walked backstage and Warren Beatty had this look on his face like, ‘What the fuck did you just do?’ He was just looking at me like, ‘You poor boob, what the fuck did you just do?'” the “Avatar: The Way of Water” director told The Hollywood Reporter. “And I went, ‘Oh, was that not cool? Ok.’ I mean,...

An incredible amount of intense production went into televising the “Jerry Maguire” winner’s famous Oscar acceptance
One of the most famous Academy Awards moments of all time came in 1997, when Cuba Gooding Jr. accepted the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for “Jerry Maguire.”
Gooding was absolutely ecstatic about the win, jumping for joy on stage and going well over the tiny amount of time allotted for speeches. Which culminated in his shouting out thanks to everyone he could think of even as the Oscars orchestra attempted to play him off — and it was so well received by the audience that he got a standing ovation for refusing to be played off.
Of course, the whole thing happened on live TV and as you probably can imagine it took an incredible amount of work behind the scenes to capture it all. But you don’t have to take our word or your imagination for it.

It was the most unusual Golden Globes Awards since 2008, when the writers’ strike forced producers to scrap it in favor of a press conference. But this year, the show strived to be, in the words of executive producer Barry Adelman, as “Golden Globes-y” as possible.
That meant embracing unpredictable moments, such as when Catherine O’Hara’s husband added sound effects from his phone to the “Schitt’s Creek” star’s acceptance speech, or when “Judas and the Black Messiah” star Daniel Kaluuya accidentally had his laptop on mute (something that was quickly rectified).
“There were a number of surprises all night long where suddenly people popped up in situations that you had no idea that it was happening,” Adelman said. “I thought it made the show extremely interesting. You suddenly saw children walk into the frame, you saw dogs. Jodie Foster and her wife and their dog was a total surprise and a wonderful picture.

With the Grammys just days away, the final preparations for performers and announcers are coming together: Among them, Variety has confirmed with sources that K-pop sensations Bts will be presenting an award at the show.
While Bts is up for one Grammy this year, it’s somewhat of a sidelong nomination: best recording package (i.e. artwork) for their “Love Yourself: Tear” album, for which they’re nominated alongside Seoul-based branding outfit HuskyFox. In that category, the group is up against St. Vincent’s “Masseduction,” Mitski’s “Be the Cowboy,” the Chairman’s “The Offering,” and Foxhole’s “Well Kept Thing.”
Sources also say nominees Taylor Swift and Maroon 5 will not be attending — the former is up for one award, best pop vocal album (“Reputation”), and the latter for best pop duo/group performance. The ultimate get would be an appearance by Drake, whose reaction to awards shows in general...

Emmy hopefuls, beware: there’s a comedy hitman hiding in your midst.
Bill Hader accepted the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Comedy Series on Saturday night for HBO’s “Barry” and his direction of the series’ pilot episode “Chapter One: Make Your Mark.” Hader’s win comes as something of a surprise after Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” made mincemeat of much of its competition at recent awards outings, including Amy Sherman-Palladino’s triumph over Hader in the comedy director category at the Emmy Awards.
HBO had significant wins throughout the ceremony, striking a blow to its non-traditional counterparts, with Netflix taking home the only prize for a streaming service, for Reality Programs direction on “The Final Table.”
Making its first significant awards season inroad after its critically acclaimed freshman season, HBO’s “Succession” scored a big win for executive producer and director of its pilot Adam McKay,...

Alfonso Cuarón has triumphed at the Directors Guild of America Awards, making the “Roma” auteur the official frontrunner as we near the Academy Awards in just a few weeks. There’s significant overlap between the two voting groups, and the DGA winner tends to be similarly awarded by the Academy — their selections have diverged only seven times since 1949. Cuarón previously won the award for “Gravity,” for which he also won the Oscar.

Alfonso Cuarón has been named the best director of 2018 for “Roma” at the 71st Annual Directors Guild Awards, which were handed out on Saturday night in Hollywood.
The win reinforces Cuarón’s position as a strong favorite to win the Academy Award for Best Director, and marks the fifth time in the last six years that one of a close-knit group of three Mexican-born directors has won the DGA Award. Cuarón also won for “Gravity,” while his close friends Alejandro G. Iñárritu and Guillermo del Toro have also won in that stretch, Iñárritu for “Birdman” and “The Revenant” and del Toro for “The Shape of Water.”
The win for Cuarón and “Roma” is the most significant guild award ever won by Netflix, which backed the director’s black-and-white, Spanish language memory piece. It is the second foreign-language film to win the DGA feature-film award, after Ang Lee’s “Crouching Tiger,...

The 71st Annual Directors Guild of America Awards will be held Saturday, Feb. 2, with awards to be given out in 11 categories across film and television.
Alfonso Cuaron is the runaway favorite to take home his second feature film DGA Award for “Roma,” which would set him up for the corresponding Oscar since the two bodies have only ever disagreed seven times in 70 years. He previously won both for “Gravity” (2013). Spike Lee (“BlacKkKlansman”) is in second place in our odds and would be the first black winner in DGA history.
Last year, Cuaron’s friend Guillermo del Toro took home the DGA and Oscar for “The Shape of Water.”
See DGA Awards: Alfonso Cuaron all but certain to win key Oscar precursor
On the TV side, “The Americans” is predicted to bag another farewell prize, while it’s a tight one between “Atlanta” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” for comedy honors.

Comedy series creators dominate this year’s roster of Directors Guild of America TV awards nominees. Donald Glover is contending for an episode in the sophomore season of “Atlanta,” which also reaped a bid for Hiro Murai. Both Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband Daniel Palladino vie for installments in the second edition of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” And Bill Hader is nominated for the pilot of “Barry.”
Among the TV drama helmers is Adam McKay for an episode of “Succession.” He could well be a nominee for his film “Vice” as well. He contends here against “Ozark” star Jason Bateman, long-time “Homeland” helmer Lesli Linka Glatter, Chris Long for “The Americans” series finale and Daina Reid for a second season episode of “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
On the telefilm/limited series side, Barry Levinson made it a lucky 13 DGA nominations with his bid for “Paterno.” He faces off against Cary Joji Fukunaga...

The Director’s Guild of America gave its stamp of approval to a number of actors-turned-directors Monday afternoon, nominating a slew of famous faces for its 2019 DGA Awards.
Jason Bateman (“Ozark”), Bill Hader (“Barry”), Sacha Baron Cohen (“Who Is America?”), and Ben Stiller (“Escape at Dannemora”) all landed their first DGA nominations, while Donald Glover (“Atlanta”) scored his second nomination for the series.
“Atlanta” was one of a few projects scoring multiple nominations, as Hiro Murai was also selected for his work on “Teddy Perkins” (IndieWire’s pick for the best TV episode of 2019). When you watch any live event on television, we as an audience usually take for granted just how much it takes to make everything look smooth. Take the Oscars, for example. With various cameras, lots of celebrities in the crowd and no advanced notice of who will win or what they'll say, there's an incredible amount of preparation that must take place when it comes to the folks controlling what you do and don't see on TV. Famed TV director Louis J. Horvitz was at the helm of the 69th Academy Awards back in 1997, a show most remember for Cuba Gooding Jr.'s wildly energetic acceptance speech upon winning Best Supporting Actor for his role in Jerry Maguire. This was Horvitz's first time directing an Oscars ceremony, having previously helmed a number of...

You can expect the Emmy telecast, hosted by Andy Samberg and airing Sept. 20 on Fox, to stick with what's worked in the past. As 13-time Emmy show producer Don Mischer told TV critics last month, there's little point in reinventing the wheel. When it comes to creating a memorable awards show, he said, "the two things that make the most difference are 'Who wins?' and 'What do they say?' And as a producer you have absolutely no control over that."
Of course, those moments over which Mischer and 17-time Emmycast director Louis J. Horvitz have absolutely no control are the ones awards show viewers live for. So we'll keep an eye out for spontaneity, but as for the rest of the show, there are 9 things we can expect to see.

A version of this story appeared in the “Down to the Wire” issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine. Lots of people have won Emmys, but you can count on one hand the number who’ve had the surreal experience of cuing their own acceptance speech. Glenn Weiss did it last year when he directed the show on which he won an Emmy for directing the Tonys — and this year’s Emmy director, Louis J. Horvitz, has done it five times, winning the majority of his seven Emmys (five for the Oscars, two for the Kennedy Center Honors) while sitting in the show’s.

Passionate fans of HBO's "Game of Thrones" are frantically putting together clues about whether a popular character is really dead. Fan-favorite Jon Snow seemingly perished in the fifth season finale of the show on June 14. Actor Kit Harington appeared at the Wimbledon tennis tournament this weekend still sporting his long "Snow" locks, giving watchers hope that he will return after all. Also in the actual episode, they wonder if "Melisandre arriving at the Wall just before his death couldn't have been a coincidence." Are these both important clues as to whether Jon Snow will be back next season for the Emmy-winning show? TV Line -Break- Louis J. Last night the 2014 Emmy Award winners were announced with "Breaking Bad" taking home top honors with five wings including Outstanding Drama Series, followed by "Modern Family" with three wins including Outstanding Comedy Series. FX programs "American Horror Story: Coven" and "Fargo" each took home two awards including an Outstanding Miniseries win for "Fargo". Meanwhile, new shows such as "Orange is the New Black" and "Silicon Valley" went home empty handed and for all the fanfare it received in its first season, including 12 Emmy nominations, "True Detective" only took home one win, that being for director Cary Joji Fukunaga". Personally, I don't give a lick about the Emmys, it's right there with the Grammys in terms of worthless awards shows for me. It's a show wherein people must nominate themselves and while most award shows are no better, this one is down there near the bottom for me. So, with that said,...

Breaking Bad’s amazing final season always meant that it was a likely winner come awards season. However, the debut of the critically acclaimed True Detective earlier this year did leave many wondering whether it might rob the end to Walter White’s story of one final sweep of prizes at last night’s Emmy Awards.
As it turns out, Breaking Bad would end up being rewarded for those amazing final episodes, though True Detective did earn a very well deserved award for director Cary Joji Fukunaga (who helmed all eight instalments).
The UK was represented by Sherlock, and that too did exceptionally well, walking away with Emmys for Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman and writer Steven Moffat. Looking at the results, it’s hard to imagine anyone being too upset with the results, though many Game of Thrones fans won’t be happy to see that it was again snubbed.

Woot woot! My pick to win Best Director at the Oscars took home the Feature Film trophy at the recently concluded Directors Guild of America awards. And it's truly deserving! Cuaron defied gravity, yes pun intended, to create "Gravity," a movie grounded in sci-fi realism that many directors before him (including James Cameron) were saying that it would be hard to do.
