Burt Reynolds passed away five years ago, yet the legend of the actor, sex symbol, and famous mustache-wearer continues to grow even now. The most recent Reynolds anecdote to circulate comes courtesy of "Boogie Nights," where the "Smokey and the Bandit" star infamously clashed with a then 27-year-old Paul Thomas Anderson.
Stories of Reynolds' displeasure with the filming experience on the 1997 porn-centric comedic drama are widely known by now, and The Washington Post even reported once that he fired his agent after doing the film. In an interview with GQ in 2015, Reynolds admitted that he'd be hesitant to work with Anderson -- who earned a Best Writing Oscar nomination for "Boogie Nights," and 10 additional nominations since -- again. As Reynolds put it, "Personality-wise, we didn't fit." At the time, the actor didn't mince words, saying that during the "Boogie Nights" shoot he found Anderson "young and full of himself" and...

Earlier this week, we caught word that Universal Pictures is moving forward with a new entry in the Jurassic Park / Jurassic World franchise – which is no surprise, since the Jurassics and Fast & Furious are the studio’s two big moneymakers. What’s interesting about this new sequel is the fact that the screenplay is being written by David Koepp, who previously wrote the original Jurassic Park and its follow-up The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Now paleontologist and evolutionary biologist Steve Brusatte has taken to social media to confirm that the project is moving forward – and he knows, because it’s so far along that he has already signed on to be the dinosaur expert consultant on it. That’s a job Brusatte also had on the previous movie, Jurassic World Dominion, where he was consultant alongside paleontologist Jack Horner, who has been a consultant on all six Jurassic movies to date.

Puss in Boots discovers that his passion for adventure has taken its toll when he learns that he has burnt through eight of his nine lives. Puss sets out on an epic journey to find the mythical Last Wish and restore his nine lives.
The first Puss in Boots movie is one that I deeply enjoyed, which is something that I’m in the vast minority of. The decade-spanning Shrek franchise is quite possibly my favourite kids/family franchise of all time. Each movie in the series (except for the colossally disappointing Shrek the Third) holds a place near and dear to my heart.
So many kid’s movies get a bad reputation for being, well, only for kids. But, the Shrek movies prove that animated movies can be hugely enjoyable for adults too.

After the elimination of Dawn Burrell at the end of “Rice, Rice Baby,” the remaining 14 “Top Chef” contestants know that nobody is safe. “Second week, and we lose a very good chef,” laments Sylwia Stachyra. But there’s no rest for the weary in season 20, episode 3, “Cheeky Pints and Pub Bites.”
The 14 remaining competitors playing for the $250,000 grand prize are Ali Ghzawi (Middle East and North Africa), Sara Bradley (Kentucky), Charbel Hayek (Middle East and North Africa), Victoire Gouloubi (Italy), Dale MacKay (Canada), Sylwia Stachyra (Poland), Luciana Berry (Brazil), May Phattanant Thongthong (Thailand), Begoña Rodrigo (Spain), Buddha Lo (Houston), Tom Goetter (Germany), Gabriel Rodriguez (Mexico), Amar Santana (California), and Nicole Gomes (Canada).
“We have a little surprise for you,” says Tom Colicchio, who talks to the gathered chefs with his fellow judge Gail Simmons. “There’s no Quickfire tomorrow.” A sense of dread rises in the room. “That’s a good thing!

John Mulaney’s latest standup special will premiere next month on Netflix. John Mulaney: Baby J debuts globally April 25 on the streamer.
Baby J is Mulaney’s third Netflix stand-up special following The Comeback Kid (2015) and Kid Gorgeous (2018). His variety special John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch premiered on Netflix in 2019.
The show, directed by Alex Timbers with music by Talking Heads’ David Byrne, was shot in Boston’s Symphony Hall in February 2023.
Baby J is Mulaney’s first Netflix special since leaving rehab in 2021. The Emmy-winning comedian, writer and actor addressed the issue on Late Night With Seth Meyers in 2021. “Do you know how bad of a drug problem you have to have that when you open a door and see people gathered, your first thought is, ‘This is an intervention about my drug problem. There’s no other reason people would be behind the door,’” he told Meyers.

For better or worse, 2022 has been the year of Florence Pugh.
“Don’t Worry Darling” reached a level of pop culture relevance that most arthouse films can only dream of, with film festival attendees and celebrity gossip addicts hanging on every detail of the rumored feud between Pugh and her director and co-star Olivia Wilde. But while the film’s reviews were mixed, nobody denied that Pugh gave a phenomenal performance in the lead role. Captivating industry observers while having the acting chops to justify the attention is the stuff that movie stars are made of.
Pugh won’t be leaving the limelight any time soon, as her upcoming film slate leaves her well positioned to capitalize on her current momentum. She’s currently working with directors ranging from Christopher Nolan to Denis Villeneuve, and will be seen everywhere from indie dramas to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In good news for kids and bad news for parents who don’t want to hear the same movie 50,000 times, Peacock announced Friday that “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” will arrive on the streaming service next week.
The animated family adventure comedy is the first film in the Shrek franchise to hit theaters since the first “Puss in Boots” in 2011, though DreamWorks has produced a few streaming projects featuring Puss in Boots and other characters from the franchise in the interim. “The Last Wish” was as successful as DreamWorks could have wished for, grossing over $444 million worldwide at the box office since it was released in December and earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature.

We have a very eclectic mix of Blu-rays for you in this latest Blu-ray column. In fact, I can't remember a time when I've rounded up such an odd assortment of films. Not only do we have the new 4K release of "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," but we also have the animated "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish," the beautiful drama "The Remains of the Day," and Dario Argento's "Phenomena" just to cap things off. Like I said: eclectic.
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre 4K
Often copied, never duplicated, there will never be anything like "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" again. Even after all these years, Tobe Hooper's tale of some travelers who run afoul of a cannibal family is terrifying. Why? Because it feels like something we shouldn't be seeing. The rough, raw style makes the entire movie feel like a documentary; like someone created a...

There’s surely no feeling in the world quite like winning an Oscar– that heady, unfiltered hit of professional validation that so many actors desperately crave.
But what of those who aren’t so lucky? For every Oscar winner, there must be a handful of losers, deserving or sometimes undeserving also-rans whose work was collectively deemed to have fallen short.
While actors are often skilled at disguising their disappointment – this is show business, after all – sometimes they let their real feelings slip through.
Whether it’s via side-eye glances that seem to throw shade on the winner, or simply muttering expletives, there have been many Oscar losses that prompted reactions which live on in infamy.
These aren’t the sorest losers, necessarily, but rather actors who didn’t adhere to the staid conventions of dignified loserdom.
Sometimes, as in the case of Holly Hunter, or Cate Blanchett, the reactions seem entirely lighthearted; others,...

Until this year, my only Puss in Boots-related wish was that I would never have to sit through another film from the Shrek franchise as long as I lived. I must confess, the unexpectedly entertaining Puss in Boots: The Last Wish has entirely changed my mind!
Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) squandered eight of his nine lives with a devil-may-care panache. He sang, danced and swashbuckled his way through a legendary series of adventures but his melodious pursuit of a giant may have seen the bell toll for the last time on those carefree days. Then a standoff with a foe who cannot be quipped into submission shakes the marmalade marauder to his core.
What happens when the charismatic poster puss of living for tomorrow suddenly fears he will not make it through today? Mortality is a mighty foe.

Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek and other stars squander their talents voicing harmless but pointless sequel to 2010’s Puss in Boots
Somewhat mystifyingly, some top-secret algorithmic function in DreamWorks Animation’s audience-reaction data analysis software has decreed that yet another comeback is in order for the sort of Ok-ish and meh-plus character of Puss in Boots, smokily voiced by Antonio Banderas, originally seen in 2004 in Shrek 2, and then in the 2010 spinoff feature Puss in Boots. The numbers have come chuntering out of the side of some giant Ibm-style computer, the suits have frowningly inspected them, and another tranche of Puss in Boots content has been greenlit.
Once again, debonair outlaw Puss in Boots – a sort of cleaned-up southern European version of Jack Sparrow – is having sword-twirling adventures, again in the company of his paramour Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek); but now PiB must confront his own mortality, having used up eight of his nine lives.

This post contains major spoilers for "Babylon" and "Boogie Nights."
Damien Chazelle's newest film, "Babylon," might be one of his biggest swings to date. After his trip to the Moon in "First Man," Chazelle is back in his element, once again telling a story of ambitious dreamers making their way through a beautiful depiction of Hollywood. However, Chazelle crucially takes a big step away from his cleaner image, characterizing 1920s Hollywood through cocaine, chaos, bodily fluids and scandal. The opening scenes of "Babylon" make it definitively clear to the audience that we're not in "La La Land" anymore.
Despite finding himself in edgier, darker territory, Chazelle's reverence for the medium of film and the artists that came before him are as clear as day. Like Chazelle's other films, "Babylon" is a hodgepodge of different influences and inspirations, from a perversion of "Singin' in the Rain," to the ironic amounts...

“Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” is an astounding animated triumph, a movie that looks (and more importantly feels) much different than 2011’s “Puss in Boots” (a spin-off from the “Shrek” franchise). It’s gorgeously animated too, employing a unique visual style that director Joel Crawford described as a “fairy tale painting look.” And if you’re wondering just how they pulled it off, we’ve got some exclusive videos on the making of the movie.
This time around Puss in Boots (voiced once again by Antonio Banderas) realizes he is on the last of his nine lives. This sets the ridiculously high stakes and sends him on a quest to find a wishing star, to restore his other lives. There’s a lot of talk about how 2022 was a ‘flop’ year for film. The quality of the movies was constantly called into question without considering that many of these films were shot during the height of the pandemic where money, space, and resources were limited. Plot: Puss in Boots is back, and this time he is nearly out of his nine lives. Thankfully he may have an answer. With the legend of a lost star that can grant a single wish, he and his pals seek out this magical item in hopes to prolong his kitty lives.
Review: The cat is back. Over a decade after the first cat-centric adventure, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish makes a swashbuckling return to the big screen. Antonio Banderas is back as Puss, along with his on-and-off romantic interest, Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek). This time, the cast includes a good-hearted undercover puppy played by by the scene-stealer Harvey Guillén. Florence Pugh as Goldilocks, and her three bears are all terrific. John Mulaney shows up as the adult version of Jack Horner – if you remember the nursery rhyme – and he embraces it rather well. And William Moura is delightfully...

If you would have told 11-year-old me that I'd be in my 30s and still talking about the "Shrek" cinematic universe ... I probably would have believed you. For over 20 years, "Shrek" has permeated pop culture with merchandising, TV specials, short films, a Broadway musical, themed raves, and a spin-off series that has turned into its own bonafide franchise. First introduced in "Shrek 2," the character of Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) is back with an all-new movie, the shockingly heavy, "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish." The film sees our titular hero at a crossroads — realizing that his life of adventure has cost him eight of his nine lives. Knowing that every adventure could be his last, Puss sets out on the adventure of a lifetime to find the mythical Last Wish in an attempt to restore his nine lives.

With “Avatar: The Way of Water” winning its first weekend at the box office, it’s likely to keep that ball rolling with a second weekend in the 65 to 75 million range, since we’ll already be into the holiday week when most kids are out of school and parents are on their holiday break from work. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.

It was lightning in a bottle.
The 70th Academy Awards in 1998 served as a high-water mark for the annual telecast that the Oscars have struggled to match for over two decades. And it wasn’t only because of the “king of the world” moment.
With an estimated 87.5 million viewers tuning in for part or all of the awards (57 million reported by Nielsen on ABC), the ceremony saw the massively popular “Titanic” win 11 Oscars, including best picture; it was one of those rare moments where a populist favorite was also an awards season darling. But there are other reasons to look back at that ceremony with a mixture of appreciation and sadness – and at least some wistfulness for how the movie business operated at its peak, a pinnacle it may never reach again. With a balance of box office sensations and arthouse hits, there was something for everyone at the Shrine Auditorium that evening.

‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ Review: Mortality Casts a Shadow on Otherwise Amusing Animated Sequel
This review of “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” was first published on November 26.
It’s been 11 years since the last “Puss in Boots” movie, and 12 years since the last proper installment of the original blockbuster “Shrek” movie franchise. So it makes sense that this new kids movie would want to grow up with its former audience. But “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” may have overshot that mark: The latest fairy-tale comedy adventure is all about how living in an old folks’ home is tragic and depressing and only slightly preferable to our inevitable, terrifying deaths.
Unless, of course, you find a wishing star!
Um… yay?

More than a decade has passed since the last film in the "Shrek" franchise, the spin-off film "Puss in Boots." That 2011 adventure centered the fan-favorite swashbuckling cat, voiced by Antonio Banderas as a silly blend of Zorro and an adorable kitty, in an adventure without any talking ogres, donkeys, or the like. In the intervening 11 years, the studio behind "Puss in Boots", DreamWorks Animation, has shifted ownership from DreamWorks Skg to 20th Century Fox to Universal Pictures, where it's now overseen by the head of another animation studio, Illumination. And yet, perhaps thanks in part to the enduring legacy via memes online, the "Shrek" franchise endures, with a fifth film looming on the horizon. But first, we are revisiting the cat himself with "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish," a sequel that blends more fairy-tale fluffery with a somewhat unexpected heaviness due to a deathly plot twist that hovers over the entire affair.

More than a decade after “Shrek” prequel/spinoff “Puss in Boots,” the flamboyant feline is up to his old tricks — but has yet to meet the computer-animated ogre whose party he’s destined to crash in “Shrek 2.” As that series wore on, the “Shrek” franchise took on so many popular side characters that by the fourth outing, there was hardly room left to swing a cat.
A knee-high hero who walks, talks and swashbuckles upright, Puss was one of the few tagalongs rich enough to warrant his own origin story. Now, director Joel Crawford (“The Croods: A New Age”) goes dark, bringing the fearless cat face to face with his own mortality. By forcing Puss to contemplate his priorities, the sequel more than justifies its own existence, while paving the way for how his path meets the big green guy’s.

Hey kids, want to see a movie revolving around an aging male character dealing with a mid-life crisis who’s desperately afraid of his impending mortality? Just in time for Christmas?
Not so much? Didn’t think so. Now what if I told you that it was a Puss in Boots movie?
It’s been nearly two decades since the adorable Puss made his screen debut in Shrek 2 and 11 years since his starring debut, and he’s worse for the wear. In an elaborate action sequence that opens his new animated adventure Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, he gets killed. That normally wouldn’t be a problem for a cat with nine lives, except that Puss has now lost eight of them. Naturally, that prompts a visit to his concerned physician (Anthony Mendez), who advises him to adopt some lifestyle changes.

Of all the movies due to hit theaters this holiday season, you probably didn't expect to have a "Puss in Boots" sequel sitting high on your list of much-anticipated titles. But based on everything we've seen and heard about this film, it's very much worthy of being on your radar. We first met Puss in Boots back in 2004, if you can believe it. The dastardly cat stole the show in "Shrek 2" and appeared in two more sequels before taking center stage in his 2011 spinoff. Over a decade later, he's returned, just as reckless as ever, but with a stunning new look.

When Michael Stein, an actor, stand-up and friend of filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson, visited the set of Anderson’s pornography opus Boogie Nights in 1997, he noticed a cast member was missing. “I said,” recalls Stein, “‘Hey where’s Burt?’” Burt Reynolds was playing Jack Horner, a classy porno director and mentor to Mark Wahlberg’s up-and-coming porn stud, Dirk Diggler. The former Hollywood alpha would ultimately be Oscar-nominated for the role, but on the set, he was peeved. Anderson, chain-smoking American Spirit cigarettes with irritation, turned to Stein: “He’s in the trailer, man… He doesn’t want to hang out with us.’”
Refusing to come out of his trailer was one thing; elsewhere on the shoot, it almost came to blows – Reynolds took a swing at the 26-year-old Anderson. “I wasn’t there for that,” says Stein. “I heard about it though!”

In what director Joel Crawford describes as an “action adventure comedy with a lot of heart,” DreamWorks Animation and Universal previewed the first half hour of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish onTuesday during the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. The movie is the sequel to 2011’s Puss in Boots and spinoff of the Shrek franchise that debuted in 2001.
As the movie opens, the Antonio Banderas-voiced titular feline is beloved by his public and springs into action while simultaneously performing a song about himself. “Boogie Nights” (1997) not only serves as one of the great films of the 1990s, but also has one of the great casts of that era, many of them early in their soon-to-be-iconic careers. Mark Wahlberg is Eddie Adams, a high school drop out in 1977, who is washing dishes in a nightclub when he is “discovered” by Jack Horner (Burt Reynolds), a notorious director of porn films. As Dirk Diggler, Eddie soon has unexpected success, and joins a disjointed “family” of porn stars which includes Roller Girl (Heather Graham), Amber and Reed (John C. Reilly), in addition to production crew “Little Bill” (William H. Macy) and Scotty J.

Just before production was set to start on the second season of ABC’s drama “Stumptown” in September 2020, the network reversed its decision to renew the show due, in part, to complications brought forth by the coronavirus pandemic. That left series co-star Jake Johnson in a bit of a pickle when it came time to figure out what to do next. He was still connected to “Stumptown” and signing on for another series amid the global health crisis didn’t seem like the right move. Then he read Ellen Rapoport’s pilot script for the HBO Max series “Minx.”
“I finished the pilot and there were parts of that pilot that I laughed at, there were parts where I got emotional. There were little lines I thought were just perfect,” Johnson tells Gold Derby in a new interview. “I really just thought if Ellen wins creatively throughout the whole 10 episodes...

It's a special kind of heartbreak when you find out an actor from one of your favorite movies actually despised their role. So if you also count yourself an ardent admirer of Paul Thomas Anderson's "Boogie Nights" and/or Burt Reynolds, get ready for some tears. Those who've scene the film know that of its many eccentric yet endearing characters, it's the idealistic adult film director Jack Horner that shines the brightest. After all, it's Jack who holds the oddball family/film production company together with dreams of making porn flicks people will appreciate not just for sex, but for things like plot and character.

More than ten years after the first movie debuted, Puss in Boots is back.
“Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” is headed to theaters and the trailer just dropped (watch it above). And looks fun and colorful, like the somewhat more sophisticated brand extension that it always was.
Universal describes the plot of this new “Puss in Boots” as following the character (once again voiced by Antonio Banderas) as “he embarks on an epic journey into the Black Forest to find the mythical Wishing Star and restore his lost lives. But with only one life left, Puss will have to humble himself and ask for help from his former partner and nemesis: the captivating Kitty Soft Paws (Salma Hayek).” Only this time they are joined by “a ratty, chatty, relentlessly cheerful mutt, Perro (Harvey Guillén).”

Everything you need to appreciate the sanguine jazz of Steven Soderbergh’s “Let Them All Talk” — — can be gleaned from a passage in the New York Times’ recent profile of David Fincher in which Soderbergh remembers how suffocating it was to watch his notoriously obsessive friend do some post-production work on the 2002 thriller “Panic Room”:
“‘David had a laser pointer out,’” Soderbergh winces, “‘and he was circling this one section of a wall in the upper part of the frame, saying that’s a quarter of a stop too bright.’ I had to leave the room. I had to go outside and take some deep breaths, because I thought, ‘Oh, my God — to see like that? All the time? Everywhere? I wouldn’t be able to do it.’”
It’s amusing to picture Soderbergh and Fincher hanging out together for the same reason it was funny to watch Homer...

Between now and 2025, ComicBook.com’s latest headline boldly exclaims that dinosaurs could become living, breathing inhabitants of the world once again, much like a certain Hollywood classic led us to believe. But what’s their basis for this?
Well, according to the reporter, dinos may be resurrected soon because Jack Horner – better known as the researcher who formed the inspiration for the character of Jurassic Park founder and director Dr. Alan Grant – revealed to a panel that he had been trying to extract DNA from fossils and mash them together with the only dinosaurs still around on the planet today: birds.
