As My So-Called Life nears its 30th anniversary, Executive Producer Ed Zwick took a walk down memory lane Saturday to remind folks about working on the before-its-time drama that starred Claire Danes.
In a long X thread, Zwick shared an “origin story” about how he was first drawn to the work of Winnie Holzman before he would end up co-EPing her script with longtime producing partner Marshall Herskovitz. Zwick chronicles his work on My So-Called Life, as well as thirtysomething, The Last Samurai and Glory in his upcoming book “Hits, Flops and Other Illusions,” out in February.
“Kristy McNichol played ‘Buddy,’ an adolescent girl on ABC-tv’s Family,” Zwick began. “I’d write surly teenage dialogue and get network notes on my scripts with the initials N.O.B. meaning “not our Buddy.” I vowed someday I’d get to portray real adolescence.”

A babymoon is supposed to be a relaxing pre-birth break, but it looks set to take on a very different meaning on You're Not Supposed to Be Here.
The Lifetime movie will debut on Saturday, November 4, at 8/7c, and the first trailer is insane.
Chrishell Stause stars opposite Diora Baird, with the pair playing a couple whose babymoon to a remote mountain town is anything but peaceful.
The movie came from a concept by Lauren Caster, who won The WrapWomen and Lifetime PitchFest for Emerging Female Filmmakers in 2021 as part of Lifetime's Broader Focus initiative that supports female creatives.
"When pregnant lesbian couple Zoe and Kennedy struggle with the stress of work and family life, Kennedy's boss offers them a cabin getaway in the woods," the logline teases.
"When they arrive at the beautiful cabin located in a remote mountain town, the locals aren't all overly welcoming," Lifetime adds.

Twenty five years ago this week, the sitcom Blossom debuted on NBC. Star Mayim Bialik was only 15 when the show began airing regularly on Jan. 3, 1991, and over the course of five seasons, viewers watched her character, Blossom Russo, learn a whole lot of major life lessons.
In fact, the show often made a point of prefacing these episodes with an intro voiceover from Bialik herself, who'd announce "Tonight, on a very special Blossom," just to let viewers know that they were in for some heavy stuff.
In honor of the show's silver anniversary, we're listing off the most special of those very special episodes.

The season premiere of "Man Men" brought the action into the '70s -- but a few guest stars had us thinking of the '90s instead. When Peggy Olson (Elisabeth Moss) was set up on a blind date by one of her coworkers, we were immediately transported back to 1994 and the premiere of "My So-Called Life." No, Jordan Catalano didn't pop up as Peggy's new paramour -- but Brian Krakow did! Actor Devon Gummersall -- who played the big-haired smarty-pants who pined over Angela Chase on the classic teen drama -- showed how much he's changed in the past 20 years wen he popped up as Mathis' brother-in-law Stevie Wolcott. He looks gooood now, right? Gotta say this has been a really fun morning seeing all the tweets about my Mad Men scenes. On Sunday night's Mad Men premiere, Peggy reluctantly agrees to be set up on a blind date with her co-worker Mathis's brother-in-law, Stevie Wolcott. Peggy has her guard up during the date, but thaws about halfway through the evening, presumably when she realizes that Stevie is played by Devon Gummersall, a.k.a. Brian Krakow from My So-Called Life (as BuzzFeed reported last year, he's "hot now").When Elisabeth Moss found out her character would be paired with Gummersall, she had the normal reaction. "I fucking flipped out," she told Vulture. "I don’t remember if I ever told him that, but I was thrilled and very, very excited I was able to play with him. He’s so great on the show, he’s perfect." Moss explained how meaningful My So-Called Life was to teens in the 90s: That show was huge for us ... My So-Called Life was the...

A review of the final "Mad Men" season premiere coming up just as soon as I try your veal... "That's not a coincidence! It's a sign!" -Ken "Of what?" -Don "The life not lived." -Ken A handsome man in a grey suit once asked, "But what is happiness? It's a moment before you need more happiness." And at a moment in time when that man and many of the people he worked with seem to have acquired a boatload of professional happiness — or, at least, money — a ghost danced in front of him and sang about how the best things in life are free. And as "Mad Men" returns from its last hiatus, having carried its characters out of the 1960s altogether, "Severance" is a reminder of how elusive happiness is for everyone, and how the life not lived seems at once far more appealing and impossible to actually explore.

“Reeker” is an interesting take on a slasher film. The decade of the slasher has long past so most films that take on that sub-genre are repetitions of previous movies that many of us have long watched. I was impressed that “Reeker” took a formula that has been beaten to death and added a nice twist to it.
“Reeker” centers on a bunch of young adults stranded in a desert rest stop only to be soon attacked by a mysterious creature while they are all having visions.

The coming-of-age series only lasted one season, but its legacy has lived on. "My So-Called Life," which still has a cult following, launched Danes' career and earned her a Golden Globe Award and an Emmy nomination at the ripe old age of 15.

As Disney Channel readies its buzzy Girl Meets World spin-off, the beloved cast of Boy Meets World will come together for their first-ever reunion at the 2nd Annual Atx Television Festival.
Taking place in Austin, Texas from June 6-9, the weekend-long event celebrates outstanding television past, present and future. In typical festival fashion, screenings and Q&As will be all the rage. But what sets Atx apart is an intimate environment in which attendees can interact with the industry folks — both onscreen and off — they admire most.

Super-stardom always looks so inevitable in retrospect: of course Ryan Gosling would make a name for himself in well-received indie movies like Lars and the Real Girl and Blue Valentine, while also finding popular success in movies like The Notebook and Crazy, Stupid, Love.
And with looks like Chris Evans', it was surely only a matter of time until he'd find a vehicle like Captain America that would give him the lead in a movie that's a big fat hit.
But is that true? Once you each a certain level and generate the "right" kind of buzz, is super-stardom inevitable?
As near as I can tell, Hollywood is still basically playing by the "three-flops-and-you're-out" rule: after a leading actor's breakthrough success, he gets about three more roles to prove himself.
If these movies flop, and if their name recognition is still high enough because of that initial break-through, they...

One of the best parts of the almost too good to be true Lifetime TV show Drop Dead Diva, is that it has marked Margaret Cho’s return to series television. Cho recently spoke about her character, Teri, her dream guest star (hey, Kim Kardashian have your people call Cho’s people), and Ddd’s message of empowerment. Read what she had to say and start your countdown to the Drop Dead Diva season premiere this Sunday, June 6 at 9:00 Pm.
Q: How did Teri get so snarky?
Margaret: I think that the character was written – sometimes I think a lot of the characters developed between my conversations just with Josh Berman and hanging out and things that I've said and done, they wind up in script. I don't find her particularly snarky. She's... in a sense what she reminds me of is kind of like an old,...

Weren't you excited to welcome back Lifetime's touching and hilarious switched-identity world of "Drop Dead Diva"?
In the Season 2 premiere episode, it's raining men for our heroine, Jane (played by Brooke Elliott). The episode picks up the morning after Jane's estranged husband, Ethan (Devon Gummersall), surprisingly shows up on her doorstep.
Jane, of course, has no recollection of him, but she's not alone. No one in Jane's life knew that she secretly married him in order to add him to her insurance when he was battling leukemia. Jane comes to find out that she has a visceral reaction to Ethan that she doesn't understand. Is she feeling the former Jane's attraction to Ethan?
Thankfully, her guardian angel, Fred (so glad to have Ben Feldman back!), is able to tell her that the feelings may not be warm and fuzzy. Bye, Ethan!
So, that leaves Jane back with two other romantic possibilities.

In the Season 1 finale of Drop Dead Diva, Jane (Brooke Elliott) was finally beginning to get a grip on her new life and new body. But the arrival of Jane's secret husband Ethan (Devon Gummersall) threw her into quite a tailspin. To make matters worse, Jane's on the cusp of being disbarred for breaching client-attorney confidentiality.

So where do things pick up for the attorney at the start of Season 2 (premiering Sunday at 9/8c on Lifetime)? A love triangle, of course! "There's lots going on for Jane in the love world," Elliott says.
And let us not forget the return of Paula Abdul. Wearing her bedazzled judge's robe, Abdul appears in Jane's dream sequence and the two break it down in a food court.

n its first season, Drop Dead Diva won over quite a few fans, and on June 6th the Lifetime show is returning to pick up where the cliffhanger-ish first season left off, and feature a lot more guest stars - (Rosie O'Donnell, Ricki Lake, Vivica A Fox, Chad Lowe, Nancy Grace, Kellie Martin, Faith Prince, Sharon Lawrence, Devon Gummersall and David Denman). The series, which garnered critical acclaim throughout its first season, follows a beautiful-but-vapid model wannabe, Deb, who finds herself relegated to the body of a plus-size attorney, Jane (Brooke Elliott), following their deaths. While the placement was accidental, it just might be divine intervention if it can help self-centered Deb learn to use her brain, rather than her looks to get by in life - with a little help from her loyal assistant Teri Lee (Margaret Cho). The show is a lot of fun, and just the sort of quirky,...

Fred is back, and he's bearing gifts on the season premiere of "Drop Dead Diva." Just not the kind that Jane wants.
Such is the world of "Drop Dead Diva," which begins its second season on Sunday, June 6. As you can see in the clip above -- an exclusive on Zap2it -- the new season picks up pretty much where the first season ended. Jane (Brooke Elliott) is still flustered about the arrival of her secret husband (Devon Gummersall), and she's still on the verge of losing her job for breaching attorney-client privilege -- none of which Fred's (Ben Feldman) arrival on her doorstep seems to help.
This despite the fact that he comes with Belgian chocolate, caviar ... and a jar of fertilized duck eggs ("It's delicious on toast").
Yeah ... we'll take his word for it on that last one. So what are you going to do to help our girl,...

After the 80's passed it seemed that - for the most part - the slasher craze had finally come to a rest. Successful franchises like Halloween, Nightmare On Elm Street and Friday The 13th had been siphoned beyond emptiness and any intrigue the sub genre once offered appeared dead and buried. Then 1996 rolled around and Wes Craven, Kevin Williamson and Neve Campbell reminded us that good directing, storytelling, and acting is alive and well with the surprise hit Scream.
The next couple of years provided a massive batch of 'fresh' copycats and a handful of Scream sequels. Very few of any are remotely near noteworthy (quick nod to I Know What You Did Last Summer in order to avoid the onslaught of negative commentary from the obsessed Sarah Michelle Gellar fans out there J ), though Scream 2 remains a memorable franchise installment based solely on the unexpected axing of series favorite Randy (Jamie Kennedy) Meeks.

Today I don't feel like Brian Krakow standing sad and alone in the street holding my bike. Nope, today it feels like the Internet is giving me a big warm hug thanks to the debut of My So-Called Life on Hulu. The site is now streaming every episode of ABC's pioneering but short-lived series about a teenage girl growing up in the '90s.
For the uninitiated, My So-Called Life stars Claire Danes as Angela Chase, a teen desperately searching for meaning in her life and balancing new friends, the wild Rayanne Graff (A.J. Langer) and gay 15-year-old Rickie Vasquez (Wilson Cruz), with old ones, nerdy Brian (Devon Gummersall) and cheerleader Sharon Cherski (Devon Odessa). The show also chronicles Angela's parents' (Bess Armstrong and Tom Irwin) rocky relationship and her obsession with the broody Jordan Catalano (Jared Leto).Continue reading My So-Called Life lands on Hulu

PASADENA -- Lifetime Television has given a series pickup to State of Mind, a drama starring Lili Taylor set to debut in the summer.
In addition, Kirstie Alley is set to star in and executive produce the Lifetime original movie And She Was, also set to premiere in the summer. Lifetime Entertainment Services president of entertainment Susanne Daniels made the announcements Thursday during the network's portion of the Television Critics Assn. press tour at the Ritz-Carlton Huntington Hotel.
State of Mind, from Warner Horizon Television and executive producers Greer Shephard and Michael Robin, is described as a quirky, comedic drama series about a brilliant take-charge therapist (Taylor) whose personal problems rival those of her eclectic and offbeat patients.
"Lili's character is imminently relatable, and we know our viewers will instantly connect with her," Daniels said.
The show's ensemble cast also includes Derek Riddell, Mido Hamada, Kevin Chamberlin, Lolita Davidovich and Devon Gummersall.
The pilot, directed by Robin, was written by author and practicing psychotherapist Amy Bloom. The show is produced by Shephard/Robin Prods. in association with Warner Horizon.
The series becomes the second new drama to be ordered by Daniels for 2007, after Army Wives, which is now set to debut in June instead of March for competitive reasons as well as to allow more time to properly launch the show.

Hollywood spoiled brats (finally) get to strive for their 87 minutes of fame in "The Young Unknowns". This debut feature from writer/director/co-producer Catherine Jelski actually played the festival circuit in 2000 and is only now getting a limited release.
The title characters consist of four showbiz twentysomethings led by top-billed Devon Gummersall (TV's "My So-Called Life" and "Felicity"). He and his co-stars have roles that are meaty but perhaps more suitable for an acting monologue. It's doubtful that these pampered postpubescents can win over multiplex audiences in any meaningful fashion.
Gummersall plays Charlie, a narcissistic stoner/boozer and overgrown rich kid. Mom and Dad split up a decade earlier, each leaving town for other climes with younger, more beautiful mates. A chauvinist hothead, Charlie is a budding commercial director -- following in Dad's footsteps -- while he mans "the L.A. house" for London-based Pop.
That L.A. house is virtually the whole show here, as the first half of Jelski's film never strays from the home and pool. Because of this, "The Young Unknowns" reveals its stage origins early on. Interestingly, Jelski's inspiration was the 1969 Austrian play "Magic Afternoon" by Wolfgang Bauer of the theater of cruelty school.
The attempt to transfer Bauer's themes to turn-of-the-millennium Hollywood is commendable. The film, unfortunately, is not. Charlie's baby auteur declares that "story is dead; image rules." Watching this talkathon, it's hard to deny the point.
Shot in super 16 mm, the camera setups and directing choices are generally fine, though the sound could be better, as the dialogue is occasionally muffled. The cast (Arly Jover's disgusted foreign girlfriend, Eion Bailey's partying-psycho best buddy and Leslie Bibb's model/cokehead) meshes well. Gummersall and Bibb (lately of "ER") deserve bigger opportunities. Still, the constriction of both story and primary set becomes static, and Charlie's macho-versus-abandoned persona eventually gets tiresome.
"The Young Unknowns" is a curious exercise in the vein of David Rabe's "Hurlyburly" that needed greater dramatic heft than is exhibited by the industry lightweights it depicts.
