But when Will is approached with a life-changing offer, can he leave Grantchester and Geordie behind? We have good news and bad news for fans of PBS’s Grantchester. The good news is that the British mystery drama has been renewed for a ninth season. The bad news is that the upcoming season will be the last for Tom Brittney, who has played crime-solving vicar Will Davenport since season 4.
‘Grantchester’ renewed for season 9
It’s only been a few weeks since Grantchester Season 8 premiered on PBS, but the show’s cast is already looking ahead to season 9. Filming recently began on the upcoming episodes, which will be Tom Brittney’s last. The actor – who took over as vicar after James Norton left the show in 2019 – has decided to move on.
“I’ve had the most incredible time playing Will Davenport for the last five years,” Brittney told PBS. “I got to solve crimes with my best friend, and work with the best cast and crew I could ever ask for.

Now that Endeavour has ended for good, there are a few obvious places for fans to go in search of more of the crossword-solving, bitter-drinking, classics-quoting Oxford detective. The first are Colin Dexter’s novels, which established the character. The second is the original ITV show Inspector Morse based on those books, which starred John Thaw in the title role for 33 feature-length episodes between 1987 and 2000. Thirdly, there’s sequel Lewis, which continued the story of Morse’s underling Robbie through his own inspector days, and which also ran for 33 episodes, up until 2015. Both are currently streamable on BritBox in the UK and US, as well as Itvx, and PBS Masterpiece.
The likelihood though, is that those three will have already been exhausted by Morse devotees, so here are some recommendations of detective shows with a touch of Endeavour about them, whether it’s a melancholic lead with a brilliant mind,...

Among the many controversies that gripped the British Royal Family during the 1990s was one that would only come to light almost two decades later, when Prince Andrew’s friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his partner Ghislaine Maxwell (who was convicted of sex trafficking last December) was eventually exposed in the press.
The scandal, which metastasized after Prince Andrew was sued in a civil court for sexual assault by Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein’s victims, destroyed his public standing. His mother, Queen Elizabeth II, stripped him of his many patronages and military titles before she died and, despite denying any wrongdoing and ultimately settling with Giuffre, Andrew is still effectively banished from public life.
But for James Murray, who plays Prince Andrew in Season 5 of “The Crown,” there was no apprehension about stepping into the disgraced royal’s buffed shoes. “My thoughts were, ‘Great, fantastic,’” Murray tells Variety.

The news that Jerome Flynn has joined the cast of the Yellowstone prequel 1923 should excite anyone who was a fan of Game of Thrones… or ’90s-era English cover bands. Yes, long before Flynn started playing sellsword Bronn on Thrones, he was selling records as one half of the pop duo Robson & Jerome. And the other half was Robson Green, now famous for his starring role as Detective Inspector Geordie Keating on Grantchester. In their native United Kingdom, Robson & Jerome became one of the bestselling musical acts of 1995 — though music critics weren’t exactly sold on their talent. These two TV stars’ surprising detour into pop music came by way of the ITV drama Soldier Soldier, on which Green played Dave Tucker, a fusilier in the British Army, and Flynn played Paddy Garvey, a sergeant. In a 1994 episode of the show, Dave and Paddy step in as last-minute wedding singers, performing...

Warning: contains plot details for Grantchester seasons 1-6 and the first two episodes of season 7.
Grantchester is commonly described by critics and viewers as a “cozy mystery”. This label, especially in regards to its seventh season currently airing in the US on PBS, is misleading. Although so far the season’s emphasis on found family is heart-warming, there are also a number of serious social and political issues underneath the unraveling of its various mysteries.
The crime-solving vicar/priest/nun is a common cozy mystery archetype. In 1950s-set Grantchester, originally based on a series of books by James Runcie, that character started out as Sidney Chambers (James Norton), a vicar with an unusual side hobby and a good friend in police inspector Geordie Keating (Robson Green). Sidney served in WWII but many of his younger parishioners did not, which shaped his interactions. The series veered in a different direction from the books,...

Enjoy the Dirty Dancing–inspired holiday that vicar Will Davenport (Tom Brittney), Detective Inspector Geordie Keating (Robson Green), and the gang go on in the Grantchester premiere, because the fun of couples “having a snooze” in their cabins (wink-wink) and Will canoodling by the water won’t last long. Two storylines take Season 6 of the Masterpiece Mystery! to “dark places,” says creator Daisy Coulam, beginning when gay curate Leonard Finch’s (Al Weaver) loving private life — a crime in 1958 England — is exposed. (Credit: Colin Hutton (C) Kudos/ITV/Masterpiece/PBS) “Will and Geordie see somebody suffer because the law is not always just,” Coulam says, adding that the scandal impacts every character. “But there is some hope at the end.” The second half of the eight-episode season doubles down on that theme — the cost of facing the truth — with World War II prisoner of war Geordie confronting the painful past he’s suppressed.

Exclusive: ITV is adapting Val McDermid’s series of cold case investigations Karen Pirie from Harlots writer Emer Kenny and Bodyguard producer World Productions.
The British commercial broadcaster has ordered three, two-hour drama episodes of the adaptation, which is based on McDermid’s novel, The Distant Echo, the first in a series of best-selling novels about a young Scottish female detective set in the Scottish university town of St. Andrew’s.
Karen is a refreshingly normal and charmingly unfashionable young woman. While she is not slick or a maverick cop, her quick mouth and ingenuity make her an impressive investigator. Following her promotion to Police Scotland’s Historic Cases Unit, Karen is tasked with reopening the investigation into a murder that has been the subject of a provocative true crime podcast. When teenage barmaid Rosie Duff was stabbed to death in 1995, suspicion fell on the three drunken students who discovered her body.

I was a little nervous about the current fourth season of the PBS crime drama series Grantchester, as just one episode in, we lost one of our main characters who drove the series, and was so loved. It’s a small cast, and the series has always hinged on the main two characters, played by James Norton and Robson Green, so to know Norton wouldn’t be on the show anymore, I had to wonder if it would work. Luckily, the supporting cast, and the new members including Tessa Peake-Jones, Al Weaver, and Tom Brittney have carried it into this new season of the series, and I’m happy to say it still works!
This series is so incredibly well-written and captivating. It has every ingredient to make a great dramatic, comedic, crime show, with characters we love so much. So I am happy to report we are getting another season after this one.

Grantchester is coming back for a fifth season after British broadcaster ITV and PBS Masterpiece renewed the quaint drama. Stars Robson Green and Tom Brittney will return, although James Norton will not.
The fourth season of the Kudos-produced drama is set to air in the U.S. this weekend after airing in the UK at the start of the year.
Season 5 will pick up in Cambridge in 1957, a year after the current fourth season in which Prime Minister Harold MacMillan told the British people that they had “never had it so good.” For many of the residents of Grantchester, it really will feel like they’re in a delightful new Eden, but for all the talk of paradise on earth and faith-in-action, Geordie (Green) knows that trouble is never far away.
Kudos executive producer Emma Kingsman-Lloyd said: “We are very excited that Grantchester is returning for a fifth series.

Grantchester Season 4 release date on Masterpiece on PBS: When does the mystery drama start in 2019?
Fans were happy when Masterpiece on PBS confirmed in April 2018 that Grantchester, ITV’s popular mystery drama, would return in 2019 for season 4. Grantchester is a mystery series based on James Runcie’s novel series, The Grantchester Mysteries. It follows Reverend Sidney Chambers (James Norton) who, despite being a clergyman, can’t help indulging in more worldly pursuits, such as teaming up with police detective Geordie Keating (Robson Green) to solve murder mysteries in the English village of Grantchester. Although the confirmation that Grantchester was returning to Masterpiece on PBS was good news, fans were also saddened to learn that Grantchester […]

This is a good news -- bad news situation. The Grantchester TV show has been renewed for a fourth season on PBS, however, season four will be James Norton's final outing as Anglican priest Vicar Sidney Chambers. Norton is in high demand, these days. He also stars as Alex Godman on McMafia, an AMC--BBC One co-production that centers on a Russian mob family living in exile in London. Grantchester, season four, will premiere on PBS in 2019 at a date Tbd. First the good news for Grantchester fans: The ITV & PBS series has been renewed for Season 4. Now the rotten news: They will be the final episodes with star James Norton as the jazz-loving, crime-solving vicar Sidney Chambers as the actor segues to the BBC-AMC drama McMafia.
Norton, whose name has been bandied about as the next James Bond, will return to the Masterpiece series alongside Robson Green, who co-stars as his partner-in-crimefighting Detective Geordie Keating. Al Weaver, Tessa Peake-Jones and Kacey Ainsworth also star. Production begins in June in London for a 2019 premiere.
But Norton’s exit won’t signal the end of the series set in the 1950s in the English hamlet of Grantchester.
“It’s a bittersweet time for Grantchester fans, who will be cheering the return of the series but crushed to say goodbye to James,” said Masterpiece executive producer Rebecca Eaton at Wgbh Boston.
