This article is part of an ongoing series that looks at disability issues in television.
Screenwriter Jack Thorne calls the discussion on disability representation in media “the great ignored question,” and it’s a sentiment echoed by many of us with disabilities. As Thorne lays out, critics often speak out of both sides of their mouth — acknowledging the lack of disabled voices in the various phases of film and television production, but never questioning it beyond that. Now, the screenwriter of HBO’s “His Dark Materials” hopes that he can use his privilege to not only further the conversation, but do more towards promoting disabled inclusion.
Thorne himself inhabits a unique position when it comes to the topic of disability. When he was a university student at Cambridge, he was diagnosed with Cholinergic Urticaria, an allergy to physical, natural and self-generated heat. It was a diagnosis that brought on a wealth of different emotions,...

Activist Jay Ruderman on March 3 presented an award to brothers Peter and Bobby Farrelly for their decades of championing people with disabilities, saying show business “has the power to change public perception like no other industry.”
The occasion was the sixth annual Morton E. Ruderman Award for Inclusion, presented by the Ruderman Family Foundation and held at the Waldorf Astoria in Beverly Hills.
Onstage, Jay Ruderman pointed out that U.S. unemployment is now 4%, but people with disabilities have 70% unemployment, despite being an estimated 20% of the population. The Farrelly brothers have cast people both in front of and behind the camera since their second film, the 1996 “Kingpin.”
Bobby Farrelly said, “Whatever we’ve given to the disability community, they’ve given us a lot more back.” Peter Farrelly exploded two prevalent myths: “That they will slow you down and cost you money. It’s just the opposite,” saying people with...

BBC America has ordered a series of short films that aim to change the perception of disability. The cable network has ordered Disability Monologues (w/t), curated by Mat Fraser, who has starred in His Dark Materials and American Horror Story.
Fraser, who has thalidomide-induced phocomelia, will star in the films alongside poet and playwright Jackie Hagan, Ruth Madeley (The Watch), Robert Softley Gale (My Left/Right Foot) and Liz Carr (Silent Witness). The films will premiere in 2020.
Through fictional monologues, Disability Monologues will portray the very real experiences of people with disabilities over the last 50 years in Britain. From the ignominy of discrimination and incarceration to the liberation of the electric wheelchair, there have been both great steps forward and terrible setbacks. These short films seek to challenge the world view that somehow, having a disability is a problem, or “not normal.”

Actors Ruth Wilson and Clarke Peters took the dais at Ccxp to talk about HBO fantasy drama His Dark Materials, based on the best-selling novels by Philip Pullman. Writer Jack Thorne and exec producer Jane Tranter, who runs production company Bad Wolf, spoke about the big-budget fantasy epic alongside stars including Dafne Keen, James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson and Lin-Manuel Miranda at its TCA press tour panel.
Thorne admitted that he wrote several dozens drafts for the first episode of the show, which is set to launch on HBO in October. “We wrote papers to ourselves about all the different ideas in the show. We wanted to do a Ph.D. in Phillip Pullman and we tried to do a Ph.D. in His Dark Materials. I wrote 46 drafts of episode one in order to find a way to tell this story as elegantly as possible. [Pullman’s] denseness is a blessing and a curse; it’s so exciting.

“His Dark Materials,” the fantasy trilogy by Philip Pullman that has captivated readers since its publication in the late 90s, has proven difficult to adapt in the past. If the forthcoming HBO and BBC series doesn’t hit the mark, viewers and critics will once again be sharpening their subtle knives.
The show took over Hall H at Comic-Con on Thursday afternoon, with stars James McAvoy (Lord Asriel), Lin-Manuel Miranda (Lee Scoresby), Ruth Wilson (Mrs. Coulter) and Dafne Keen (Lyra Belacqua) all present to show off a new trailer.
The trailer teased the war with the evil organization known the magisterium, with Lord Asriel on one side and Mrs. Coulter on the other. Also mentioned was the child abduction plot at the center of the show.
“Sometimes children can just disappear,” Mrs. Coulter says clicking her fingers ominously.

Mat Fraser’s a remarkable person. Not due to or in spite of his disability — the 52-year-old actor/artist/musician was born with phocomelia, resulting in foreshortened arms — but because over the course of a 30-plus-year creative career, he has played drums in groundbreaking bands, been featured in the famed Coney Island Circus Sideshow, launched daring theatrical pieces with his burlesque-icon wife Julie Atlas Muz, appeared in a range of TV and film work, and been a consistently vocal advocate for the rights of persons and performers with disabilities. But to millions of Americans, he’s first come into view as Paul “The Illustrated Seal Boy” on American Horror Story: Freak Show, whose penultimate episode airs tonight. And Fraser’s okay with that, even if it’s a bit jarring to finally have “people coming up to me, goin', ‘Are you Mat Fraser?’ not, ‘Are you the bloke with the...

America's favorite freak show took a breather over Thanksgiving, which was just long enough for the events of the seventh episode to get a little fuzzy. Don't remember what happened? This recap might help. Then again, it might not, because try as I might, it seems like a few important details slipped through the cracks in this episode.
Let's kick things off with some female trouble.
Die, Mommy, Die!
The whole freak/family metaphor is really being pounded home again and again. The last episode focused on bad daddies, so naturally this week is all about their mothers and mother figures. Gloria Mott (Frances Conroy) has started chain-smoking and seeing a shrink, but she's still trying to protect Dandy (Finn Wittrock) from outsiders and/or himself even though she knows the whole situation is all about to blow. Dandy isn't too pleased when he realizes that the nice doctor's inkblots...

"American Horror Story: Freak Show" won't be back on until after Thanksgiving, but tonight's episode didn't feel very filling. Dandy's angry cry-face is pretty representative of the whole episode; there's lots of pouting and near-tantrums and Frances Conroy just needs to come in and regulate the whole damn mess.
Let's just get started, shall we?
That's Just Dandy
Dandy (Finn Wittrock) and Mrs. Mott (Frances Conroy) don't have a whole lot of screen time this week, which is fine because they're best in small doses. Jimmy Darling (Evan Peters) shows up to collect the Tattler twins (Sarah Paulson), who have been dressed up like Alice in Wonderland. When Dandy reveals that he read Dot's diary and that she secretly wants to get surgically separated from Bette, it's not too hard for Jimmy to convince them both to leave Dandy and his fancy caviar behind. One of the show's better visual moments this season involves the classic sideshow stunt, the wheel of death. You strap someone in, spin the wheel, and then you throw knives at that person, usually getting close to the head and genitals, but never actually injuring the person. Since this is American Horror Story, that wheel becomes more than just a show. It's a warning, and when the knife thrower is an enraged Elsa Mars, well... accidents happen. Expected accidents happen, that is.
However, just because the knifing of Paul is foreshadowed well—he's Elsa's secret lover, he doesn't trust her as far as the twins go, he's got a girlfriend back in town—doesn't mean it's still not effective when it's actually executed. It's a dizzyingly...

We're not quite halfway through the season of "American Horror Story: Freak Show," but things are starting to come together nicely. "Bullseye" is an especially satisfying episode because it offers a few juicy reveals that play off of each other and have already set certain events and revelations in motion, but not so many that we're overwhelmed. Relative to the non-stop craziness that Ryan Murphy et al packed into just one "Edward Mordake" episode, "Bullseye" has a little breathing room that lets us take in the different revelations and the themes that are gaining clarity.

The Wheel of Fortune
It's Elsa's birthday week, because that's how she rolls. As one does, she pulls out the good old Wheel of Fortune to practice her aim - the TV crowd goes wild for knife throwing, am I right? As she pictures different targets, she contemplates her own...

4.4 Edward Mordrake (Part 2)
One of my hopes for this season of American Horror Story is that it wouldn't be focused on the usual cast members. Sure, I'm always game for Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates to square off with one another, but given that Freak Show has a great deal of participation from actual sideshow-type performers, I really wanted to see them be something other than colour. I'm aware that these people were cast primarily for their differences, to fit in with a proper freak show atmosphere, but I would hope that when given a chance, they could act well, too. Considering the focus of Edward Mordrake Part 2, that ability could make or break the episode.
Fortunately, the show has an ace in the hole in the form of Mat Fraser,...

I apologize for the lateness of this piece! Ahs's two-part Halloween episode was structured around green smoke spewing evil spirit Edward Mordrake's search for another soul to add to his collection of dead ghouls. This search was something like a B story entirely made up of SAG Ensemble clip reel auditions with several actors getting their own "darkest hour" backstory to tell. I loved the Illustrated Seal's (Mat Fraser) clip reel about his "handsome face" and am pleased to have read that Ryan Murphy, recognizing his talent, wants to give him a non-freak role somehow in a future season, despite his deformed hands and arms.
After completely the sad story roundup, Mordrake decides to take Elsa (Jessica Lange) with him into the afterlife following her grisly tale of her Weimer Era Germany sex club stardom ends in the grisly chain-sawing of her legs. (Yuck -- and that isn't even...
