Alamo Drafthouse says to hell with all of that and has announced two month’s worth of genre joy that’ll take you from Dia de los Muertos to Christmas Eve with minimal whiplash.

In 2012, Kier-La Janisse’s House of Psychotic Women hit bookshelves – forever altering how critics approached writing about film. Interwoven with deeply personal anecdotes and well-researched film history, Janisse charts horror cinema’s love of using the “crazy” woman archetype and how it altered, spoke to, and enhanced her life. The lines between memoir and movie review blur as Janisse explores the impact these texts (often overlooked films) have had on cinema history, hers, and ours – an approach that was then novel and boldly brought films like Possession into the esteem it has today. Her seminal book questions why and how horror films have used women’s psychological trauma, pain, and neurosis as the backbone of their stories. And, as importantly, how viewers can find catharsis and emotional resonance through their journeys with each film.
Ten years after its groundbreaking debut, Janisse rereleased the title under Fab Press in 2022 – including over...

After weeks of unease, a suspect has been detained in the double homicide of Lyric Woods, 14, and Devin Clark, 18, who were found murdered last month in North Carolina. The unnamed suspect is a juvenile, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, so their identity will not yet be released to the public.
Sheriff Charles Blackwood said in a statement: “We hope this apprehension provides some relief to the families and friends of Devin and Lyric, who have experienced an excruciating loss. Obviously, the capture of the suspect does not restore their loved one to them.

King Charles is poking fun at an incident that occurred a few weeks ago when he burst open a pen.
On Monday, during Charles’ first public engagement with Camilla, the queen consort, he quietly joked about how unpredictable pens can be while signing a visitor’s book at a council meeting in Dunfermline, Scotland.
In video footage, shared by Daily Mail London’s royal editor Rebecca English, Charles is seen signing the book before he hands his wife the pen.
“These things are so temperamental,” he says with a subtle laugh.

Talk about a Back-to-School disc promotion! CineSavant digs into Severin’s MegaBox The Incredibly Strange films of Ray Dennis Steckler — 10 discs, 20 films — just enough to sample this demented offering that some have nominated for the honor of worst film ever. It’s a glorified home movie by a guy bitten by the movie-making bug — and a friend with some cash who wanted to be a producer. Steckler’s movie found real screenings in real theaters, launching the Auteur from Lemon Grove Street on one of the oddest Hollywood careers ever.

Steve McQueen’s anthology series Small Axe and Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You dominated the BAFTA TV Craft Awards on Monday.
Small Axe clinched five wins, the most on a night that celebrated behind-the-scenes craftspeople, but it was I May Destroy You that secured two of the biggest gongs for Coel: Director: Diction, and Writer: Drama. The BBC/HBO series was also victorious in the Editing: Fiction category.
Coel, who beat McQueen in the directing category alongside co-director Sam Miller, accepted her writing win. “I would like to thank every draft. There are hundreds of them, each living only briefly and sacrificing themselves so the version we watched that won this BAFTA could exist,” she said.
BBC/Amazon series Small Axe’s prizes included JoJo Williams for Make Up & Hair Design; Jacqueline Durran for Costume Design; Helen Scott for Production Design; Shabier Kirchner for Photography & Lighting: Fiction; and Gary Davy for Scripted Casting.

Police drama “Line of Duty’s” trio of nominations included one for drama series and one for lead actress Thandie Newton. “Three Girls,” about sexual abuse in a community in northern England, will compete for the best miniseries award.
The nominations were unveiled Wednesday morning at BAFTA’s Piccadilly headquarters in London, with Michelle Keegan and presenter and “Strictly Come Dancing Winner” Ore Oduba making the announcements.

We’ve covered plenty of obscure films available on iTunes in previous From VHS to VOD columns but Apple’s digital service is not the only VOD service making waves into the strange and obscure – there’s plenty of odd, unseen and unreleased (well unreleased on disc formats) films available on Amazon Video.
Unlike iTunes, a lot of the more obscure titles are only available for streaming rather than purchase, though the wide variety of films you don’t, and probably won’t see elsewhere makes up for that. Like iTunes there are some truly obscure films hidden away in the depths of Amazon’s vast collection of movies. Some of which have been made available in the UK for the first time since VHS and a Lot that have been added to the service in their original uncut form!
So, with that said here’s highlight some of the best (well,...

Vice
Written by Andre Fabrizio and Jeremy Passmore
Directed by Brian A. Mills
USA, 2015
At this point of his career, Bruce Willis’ choices in parts are a crap shoot. While 50% of the films he makes are legitimately great (Looper and Moonrise Kingdom), the other half go straight to video and die. This latest project is a reminder that along with half-baked horror, the death knell of January is filled to the brim with bad actioners seeking a home.
With a decent cast in Willis and Thomas Jane, Vice might have been able to salvage something worth watching out of this mess, but there is no effort on the screen at all. The blame lays entirely at the feet of writers Andre Fabrizio and Jeremy Passmore and director Brian A. Miller, who worked with Willis previously on The Prince and shouldn’t have been given the chance to work again. The...

Exhumed Films 24 Hour Horror-Thon Part VIII – Design by Haunt Love
For years now, my good friend James Harris, proprietor of Doc Terror, has urged me to make the trip to Philly for Exhumed Films’ 24 Hour Horror-Thon. It sounded like an amazing time, but Philly is such a long drive for me that it never seemed reasonably possible. My wife and I discussed a way in which we could make it a trip for all of us. So, her and my son, along with her mother, came up and went on the Hershey tour, while I got my horror-thon on. With 4 people in the car, a ton of stops are going to be made. In total, it took us probably 13 and a half hours to make it to the hotel. I had only a few hours to sleep, before I would leave the hotel, en route to the Philly International House,...

The newest feature film from Frolic Pictures, Club Lingerie wrapped Wednesday, dubbing it the 8th motion picture by the bold boutique Hollywood-based production company. What is Club Lingerie? It’s a character driven dark indie screwball comedy grounded by a “who-dun-it?” murder-mystery horror plot, with melodramatic undertones and a bass note of erotic non-relief.
The star of Andy Milligan’s last film, Surgikill (1989) … the “Cult Film Goddess” herself… Bouvier, has spent the last 25 years in hiatus, turning down contract after contract from the biggest studios in Hollywood, until … The Young Sultan of Sensationalism finally convinced her to re-enter the lime light as the star of his newest picture, Club Lingerie, the story of a sophisticated woman who inherits a once ragging night club from her grandfather, only to suffer from the times’ economy, until her brilliant idea of sporting lingerie models turns the business back around…...

Here’s another installment featuring Joe Dante’s reviews from his stint as a critic for Film Bulletin circa 1969-1974. Our thanks to Video Watchdog and Tim Lucas for his editorial embellishments!
Atrocious horror‑sex item. No Rating.
Typical sex‑horror stuff, this New York‑made Jer Pictures release looks like a home movie from Bedlam and gives evidence of having been processed in a dirty bathtub. Several semi‑nude love scenes are included, but director‑photographer Andy Milligan’s real interest is in the gory murders, which are much more explicit. Blood flows copiously, bodies are chopped-up and characters are set afire in gruesome, though hardly convincing, fashion. With all these ingredients for acceptance in its own somewhat special market, the Jerome‑Fredric production is handicapped by its own incredible cheapness and ineptitude, plus a deadly slowness in the pacing. Fuzzily photographed in bleary color and blown up from 16 (or perhaps 8) millimeter,...

Code Red has been going “code blue” of late, releasing the likes of Nail Gun Massacre and Just Before Dawn on Blu-ray. We now know of seven more forthcoming Blu horror titles from the 70s, 80s, and 90s they have in the works to further empty your wallets in the coming year.

New York underground filmmaker and avante-garde theatre director Andy Milligan is perhaps best known for his sleazy exploitation movies that ran in 42nd St theatres for years throughout the 1970s. Memorable titles include The Rats Are Coming! The Werewolves Are Here! (1972) and The Ghastly Ones (1968), the latter banned in the UK during the 1980s as a “video nasty.” A meeting in 1968 in New York with Leslie Elliot, a British distributor, lead to several of his films being distributed in the UK. Even better for Milligan was the opportunity to shoot five new films under Elliot's production arm Cinemedia Films. Finding himself a flat in Soho and becoming acquainted with the British by hanging out with male prostitutes on Piccadilly Circus, Milligan developed a study of poverty,...

“I wonder what the meanest, foulest, rottenest, woodsiest sex crime ever was?”
Fred Lincoln was a giant in the adult film industry, directing and acting in hundreds of porno films from the early 70’s up until about 5 five years ago when his health began to decline. We Are Movie Geeks doesn’t cover porn, but like his costar David Hess (who died in October of 2011), Lincoln would have gone done in history as one of the slimiest degenerates in the movies if he had appeared in nothing except the 1972 rape and revenge classic Last House On The Left where he played the repellent villain Weasel Padowski (a name he sometimes used as a pseudonym for his porn directing). Director Wes Craven’s first film was one of the most notorious movies ever made, offending nearly everyone who saw it, and 40 years later, it hasn’t lost any of its edge.

To celebrate their 13th anniversary this year, the Melbourne Underground Film Festival is going green!
No, they’re not out to save the kookaburra or anything. Instead, they’re hosting a special tribute to the New Irish Low Budget Cinema, featuring two films by acclaimed filmmaker Ivan Kavanagh, plus work by Colin Downey, Gary Kenneally and Gerard Lough.
Muff will host a repeat screening of Kavanagh’s celebrated thriller Tin Can Man — it previously screened at Muff in 2008 — as well as his latest film, The Fading Light. The three other Irish films screening all fall into the horror/thriller genres, from Downey’s The Looking Glass to Kenneally’s Stephen King adaptation The Boogeyman and Lough’s trilogy-ending The Shaken 3. And, in addition, the entire fest kicks off with the opening night Irish thriller Charlie Casanova by Terry McMahon.
But don’t think Muff is all Irish all the time this year,...

While his dream of directing a "Wonder Woman" movie remains just that, it looks like Nicolas Winding Refn will get to exercise his female fantasy hero kicks through another outlet, taking on an equally iconic character.
Deadline reports Gaumont and producer Martha De Laurentiis are bringing the iconic hero "Barbarella" -- who first appeared in the Jean-Claude Forest graphic novel and was memorably played by Jane Fonda in Roger Vadim's big screen adaptation -- to the small screen with Refn to direct and executive produce. And well, that's about it at the moment. But it appears this will be pitched as a new series, so we can only guess that once the pilot is out of the way, Refn's involvement will be at the producer level only. That said, his input can only help make this a cut above, and hopefully succeed where NBC's sad "Wonder Woman" miserably failed.

Back in 2009, I interviewed Nicolas Winding Refn about his movie Bronson, and in the course of our conversation he mentioned a director whose name meant very little to me:
The filmmakers I would have loved to meet are more obscure, like Andy Milligan. He’s a very obscure filmmaker who made films for Times Square in the 60s and 70s.
After our conversation, I went to seek out more information about Milligan and discovered that, little-known as he was, there was a book on him by the biographer Jimmy McDonough called The Ghastly One. (This book was, in fact, what got Winding Refn interested in Milligan in the first place.) I found that Milligan’s movies, however, were far from easy to get hold of.
That is seemingly beginning to change, though. The BFI has just recently put out Milligan’s Nightbirds through its excellent Flipside label, and to mark...

Why the notorious Drive director paid £16,000 on eBay to buy up Milligan's films and bring them back to life
When I was about 12, I tricked my mother into buying me my first book about film: Splatter Movies, by John McCarty. That's when I became aware of Andy Milligan and started looking for videos of his films – such as Gutter Trash (1969), Fleshpot on 42nd Street (1973), Guru, the Mad Monk (1970) and The Naked Witch (1967).
When I finally saw them I was taken aback – first by their crudeness, and then by how difficult it was to sit through them. But, at the same time, I realised that here was a man who made films his own way, on his own terms. He used the medium as something he could streamline his consciousness into, and I found that fascinating.
I had moved to New York, aged eight, in 1978, too late to experience anything of the real Times Square.

★★☆☆☆ Andy Milligan is a perplexing and difficult director to grasp, and nowhere is this more evident than in his 1970 feature Nightbirds, starring Berwick Kaler and Julie Shaw. Nightbirds undoubtedly possesses a compelling narrative centred around two young, down-and-out hippies who, through a chance encounter, come to live together in a run-down flat in the East End of London.

Martha Marcy May Marlene
Although she took minor roles in movies starring her famous siblings, the twins Mary-Kate and Ashley, Elizabeth Olsen never really hitched along with them for a free ride to fame. Instead, she studied hard at perfecting her acting craft – a good thing, as we have no shortage of celebrities without portfolio.
It has paid off, and with this movie she arrives as a capable, subtle actor who is more than able at carrying a complex and demanding role. Olson plays Martha, a young woman who has fled life in a commune that, at first, seemed to be doing nothing more sinister than setting up a self-sufficient rural idyll in the Catskill Mountains. She's eagerly taken in by her sister Lucy (Sarah Paulson), who has no idea what she's been up to for the past two years. However, her behaviour is full of strange markers that reveal a great deal of indoctrination.
