“The Shining” has obsessed Oscar-winning Pixar director Lee Unkrich since he saw it in theaters at the age of 12. After years of “The Shining” Easter eggs popping up in Pixar films, Unkrich’s fascination with Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror cult classic culminates in his monumental making-of book: “Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining” (Taschen), currently available in a Collector’s Edition of 1,000 copies. (A smaller standard edition has not yet been announced.) The three-volume collection includes hundreds of never-before-seen production photographs from the Stanley Kubrick Archive in London, interviews with cast and crew, and a deluxe set of facsimile reproductions of ephemera from “the masterpiece of modern horror.”

Pixar’s save-the-world eco-epic actually begins with the world destroyed, before a pair of cute robots help put it back together again. Andrew Stanton’s animated comedy finds hope and cheer in a post-apocalyptic scenario, a tall order for any speculative science fiction tale. Meet Wall•E, the nuts ‘n’ bolts super-janitor, and Eve, the sleek next-generation seeker of terrestrial plant re-birth. Good satire and social criticism comes in the brightest package possible in this endearing charmer.

Pixar’s Oscar-winning Wall-e (2008) is coming to The Criterion Collection this November, marking an unexpected but welcome collaboration between the animation giant and boutique home video label. Wall-e will be spine #1161.
As per The Criterion Collection:
We’re proud to announce our first collaboration with Disney and Pixar: Wall•E (2008), directed by Andrew Stanton, enters the Criterion Collection on 4K Uhd this November! A high-water mark of digital animation, Stanton’s prescient vision of a rapidly oncoming dystopian future, packaged within a dazzling pop-science-fiction love story, is an urgent fable for our troubled millennium.”
Criterion typically announces their new releases to the collection in the middle of the month, with the November 2022 releases having been unveiled on August 17. Singling out September 8 for the Wall-e announcement was most likely done so to coincide with Disney+ Day.

In what Criterion is describing as their “first collaboration” with fabled animation studio Pixar, Andrew Stanton’s “Wall•E” will be joining the collection this November (spine #1161). And, typical of Criterion releases, it will be festooned with special features, including a new essay (by Sam Wasson), a pair of audio commentaries and a new documentary called “Wall•E A to Z,” featuring co-writer/director Andrew Stanton and writer Jim Reardon.
“Wall•E,” released back in 2008, originated as an idea from “Up” director (and current Pixar chief creative officer) Pete Docter called “Trash Planet.” Soon the idea mutated, as it was passed to Stanton and the focus became squarely on a small, lonely robot inhabiting an abandoned, garbage-covered Earth. When another droid visits Earth, the sleek new Eve, Wall•E falls in love. He follows her to the Axiom, a cruise ship in space, and together they reignite the human race.

“Wall-e,” Pixar’s 2008 sci-fi love-story animated film classic, is getting a special three-disc 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray release from the Criterion Collection this fall.
The special edition of “Wall-e,” the first collaboration between Criterion and Disney’s Pixar, features a 4K digital master approved by director Andrew Stanton, according to Criterion. The three-disc set will be available Nov. 22, 2022, and is currently available to pre-order from Criterion’s site for 39.96.
“Wall-e” is set in the 29th century, after humans have long since fled Earth for outer space, leaving the movie’s protagonist — the last functioning trash-compacting robot — to go about the work of cleaning up the pollution-choked planet, one piece of garbage at a time. When he meets Eve, a fellow automaton sent to detect plant life, the pair are launched on an intergalactic quest to return humanity to Earth.

In a bit of an unexpected and pleasant surprise for fans of both animation and physical media, Pixar has teamed up with the folks at Criterion for a special 4K Ultra HD release of one of the greatest animated movies of the last 15 years (at least). "Wall-e," the 2008 Oscar-winning triumph from director Andrew Stanton, is indeed going to get a physical release as part of the Criterion Collection. And it sounds like this is going to be worth the money.
Criterion made the somewhat unexpected announcement out of nowhere, revealing that the 4K edition of "Wall-e" will be hitting shelves in November. So Pixar fans now know what to put on their Christmas lists this year. Aside from an impressive list of special features (more on that in a moment), the film has been mastered in 4K, which was approved by Stanton personally. The new release also comes with some...

In Incredibles 2, Helen Parr/Elastigirl gets a job, and her new boss, wealthy businessman Winston Deavor, offers her and her family a home "so big, it was uncomfortable for them."
Brad Bird had been trying to find a way to consolidate the film's first act, along with conveying the fact that the family is feeling uneasy in their new role and wants to get out of the hotel in which they are living. Production designer Ralph Eggleston says he asked, "What if [Deavor] offers them his home?"

“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” topped Saturday’s Annie Awards, taking home seven zoetropes — one for each of its webslinger incarnations — including best animated feature. The Sony Pictures Animation film, which won in every category in which it was nominated, swung past Aardman Animations’ “Early Man,” Pixar’s “Incredibles 2,” Fox Searchlight Pictures’ “Isle of Dogs” and Disney’s “Ralph Breaks the Internet” for that honor.
In addition to animated feature, “Spider-Verse” picked up trophies for direction; writing (Phil Lord and Rothman); character animation in an animated feature (David Han); character design (Shiyoon Kim); production design (Justin K. Thompson) and editorial.
Mamoru Hosoda’s “Mirai” was named best animated independent feature.
How the “Spider-Verse” Annie wins will affect its chances on Oscar night is unclear. The Academy changed its nominating procedures this year for the animated feature category, opening it up to any Academy member willing to join the nominating committee.

Brad Bird and Pixar put themselves in a unique situation with “Incredibles 2.” Although the sequel picks up where it left off 14 years ago in “The Incredibles,” the technology and skill set have obviously improved. The challenge: Have it look as incredible as possible without breaking free from the graphically stylized world we first encountered in the original movie.
“One of our goals was to make this one feel like you remember the first one,” said Rick Sayre, the supervising technical director of both movies. “If you watched them back to back, you might feel that the first one suffers occasionally by comparison but this one is a glorious memory of the first one. But by opening with the slight unfamiliarity of Dicker slamming the light on Tony [during the interrogation], it allows you to adjust to this world before we have our flashback.”

When Brad Bird entered Pixar to make “The Incredibles,” he was ahead of the curve with superheroes and midlife crisis storytelling. However, picking up where he left off 14 years later, with “Incredibles 2,” it was much harder to make a superior sequel, especially when Pixar cut a year off his production schedule to accommodate “Toy Story 4.”
The zeitgeist has changed, the superhero landscape has changed, animation has changed, and Bird has changed, after dabbling in live-action with “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol” and “Tomorrowland.” Still, Bird had two holdovers in his favor along with greater animated super powers at Pixar: Making Helen/Elastigirl (Holly Hunter) the primary Super, relegating Bob/Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson) to becoming a stay-at-home dad, and the unveiling of baby Jack-Jack’s McU-enticing super powers.

Mireille Soria, president of Paramount Pictures Animation, and Rob Bredow, visual effects supervisor and co-producer for Disney’s “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” will deliver keynote addresses at the View Conference 2018 in Turin, Italy. The conference takes place from Oct. 22-26.
Animation veteran Soria was tapped to run Paramount’s animation division last year after serving as co-president of feature animation at DreamWorks Animation, shepherding such films as “Trolls” and “The Boss Baby.” Among the upcoming animated fare planned by Paramount are the third SpongeBob SquarePants movie “It’s a Wonderful Sponge” and the adaptation of the graphic novel “Monster on the Hill,” both slated for 2020, as well as the pickup from Skydance Media, “Luck,” about the ongoing battle between good and bad fortune that affects people’s lives on a daily basis.

At Pixar’s “Incredibles 2” sneak peek earlier this month, we learned that the story picks up where it left off 14 years ago, with the Underminer (voiced by good-luck charm John Ratzenberger) terrorizing Municiberg. The big question for director Brad Bird: Why?
“I’m not interested in a college-age Jack-Jack,” he said, referring to the infant member of the Incredibles clan. “The insight into those periods of your life and those particular perspectives disappears once you age them up.”
Even so, the superhero landscape has changed considerably since Pixar released “The Incredibles” in 2004. But in keeping the focus on family dynamic first, superpowers second, Bird stays ahead of the superhero curve. He’s also elevated Holly Hunter’s Helen/Elastigirl as the lead and begun to explore baby Jack-Jack’s superpowers.

The 21st Annual Art Directors Guild Excellence in Production Design Awards ceremony was billed as a “Return to Hollywood.” Backdrops from classic films dotted the interior of the Ray Dolby Ballroom lobby. Johnny Crawford and his Orchestra kicked off the evening’s festivities with “Hooray for Hollywood.” Even a handful of the evening’s big winners were films that fit the theme perfectly.
As expected, “La La Land” continued its storybook run through awards season, with David Wasco’s team winning for Contemporary Film. In an upset, Wynn Thomas and the team from “Hidden Figures” took home honors in Period Film, despite “Hail, Caesar!” being the only of the category’s nominees to also pick up a nom for Oscars night. “It’s been a long journey to this moment,” said Thomas, who described being nominated at the very first Art Directors Guild award for “Mars Attacks!” “I’m so...

It’s been 15 years since Pixar won the Oscar for Ralph Eggleston’s”For the Birds,” and it has another fine-feathered gem in Alan Barillaro’s “Piper” that’s getting lots of buzz (watch the clip below).
In “Piper,” a baby sandpiper overcomes a fear of water as part of her rite of passage. But, uncharacteristically, the short began as an R&D project in the tools department to create greater sculpting control for the artists. They used the new RenderMan Ris platform for photoreal shading and lighting (first used on the “Finding Dory” feature).

“For me, the goal was to make computer animation more expressive,” Barillaro told IndieWire. “There’s more personal stories we can tell and more visual language we can use with the toolset. How do we tell a story with little birds that’s not anthropomorphized?...

It’s been 16 years since Pixar won the Oscar for best animated short (Ralph Eggleston’s “For the Birds”). Wouldn’t it be fitting if Alan Barillaro’s fine-feathered “Piper” ended the drought? That would give Pixar four Oscars (alongside Geri’s Game” and “Tin Toy”).
However, “Piper” faces stiff competition, particularly from Theodore Ushev’s much darker “Blind Vaysha” from the National Film Board of Canada, which has earned a dozen Oscars.
The other three contenders range from Robert Valley’s bleak “Pear Cider and Cigarettes” (Vimeo’s first Oscar nom), the melancholy Western, “Borrowed Time” (made independently by Pixar’s Andrew Coats and Lou Hamou-Lhadj), and the introspective “Pearl” from Oscar winner Patrick Osborne (Disney’s “Feast”), the first Vr nominee from Google Spotlight Stories.

The rite of passage for the adorable sand piper continues a long Pixar tradition of incubating innovative tech in its shorts program.

This year a record 69 animated short films vied for an Oscar nomination, with ten making the shortlist, and five final nominations.
For six years, Disney or Pixar has been nominated in the category every year, and won twice (“Paperman” and “Feast”). This year Pixar’s “Piper,” from Alan Barillaro (“Wall·E,” “Brave,” “Finding Nemo”), could mark a Pixar win for the first time since Ralph Eggleston’s “For the Birds” 15 years ago. That would give Pixar four Oscars (alongside Geri’s Game” and “Tin Toy”).
