The Black Mass, the title of actress Devanny Pinn’s directorial debut is not, as one might guess, a reference to a Satanic ritual. It’s the description one of the survivors gave of the man who, across one long night in 1978, attacked four of her sorority sisters, killing two of them as well as attacking a random woman he encountered nearby.
That man was Ted Bundy. That doesn’t mean that The Black Mass is a typical true-crime film or even a straightforward slasher film. Pinn and co-writers Eric Pereira and Brandon Slagle keep the killer in the background figuratively and literally for much of the film.

The 1973 classic The Exorcist (watch it Here) is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary with a 4K release and a theatrical re-release… and fifty years after it first reached the screen, there are still new things to discover about it. In early October, filmmaker Paul Davis took to social media to share a snippet of actress Eileen Dietz’s Pazuzu makeup test, where she was shown wearing makeup designed by the legendary Dick Smith. Davis promised he would be releasing a commentary video including10 minutes of unseen outtakes and the full 2 minute makeup test video on Halloween – but when Halloween arrived, he delivered more than promised, revealing 35 minutes of rare outtake footage! There’s a new Exorcist sequel, The Exorcist: Believer, reaching theatres tomorrow, October 6th – but in his review of the film, JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray says it’s abysmal and advises horror fans to “Watch the original instead.” And watching the 1973 classic The Exorcist (watch it Here) is always good advice to follow. The movie is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary with a 4K release and a theatrical re-release… and fifty years after it first reached the screen, there are still new things to discover about it. William Friedkin’s horror classic The Exorcist turns 50 years old here in 2023, and the film’s raw power is felt as much today as it was all those decades ago. One of the most enduring images of the 1973 masterpiece is the face of the demon Pazuzu, played by Eileen Dietz.
The image flashes on the screen multiple times throughout The Exorcist, turning Dietz into something of a horror icon in her own right. All these years later, rare footage from those Pazuzu makeup tests has surfaced, and it’s been shared by Paul Davis on social media.
Davis, who directed Beware the Moon: Remembering An American Werewolf in London as well as the films The Body and Uncanny Annie (both part of Blumhouse’s anthology series “Into the Dark”), has shared a brief snippet of what he calls the “holy grail of outtakes from The Exorcist,” and he promises that...

Night of the Caregiver sounds like a Lifetime movie about a psycho home health aid. It’s actually a new supernatural horror film from producer Alexander Nevsky and director/co-star Joe Cornet two men better known for Westerns and action films than scary stuff. Can they successfully make the switch?
Julia Rowe has been taken an assignment as an in-home caregiver for Lillian Gresham, a sweet old lady who, of course, lives in the middle of nowhere. It’s Friday night but, “It pays really well, more for one night than I make in a week”, which should also be a red flag.
And we know something isn’t right due to the prologue that gives way to a scene from “13 hours earlier” where Detective Roman Eckhart (Joe Cornet), of the NYPD,...

Plot: A hospice nurse accepts a high-paying one-night job taking care of an elderly woman… but as the night goes on, it becomes clear there’s a supernatural evil lurking in the woman’s home.
Review: After directing four Westerns in a row, Joe Cornet has switched things up and made his horror debut with Night of the Caregiver – and he brought several Rio Bravo collaborators along with him: producer Alexander Nevsky, writer Craig Hamann, and cast members Natalie Denise Sperl and Anna Oris.
Now that Cornet is working in the horror genre, he doesn’t waste any time getting to the good stuff. There’s no holding back from letting viewers know there’s a demonic creature in the mix. Within the first minute, the camera has roamed through a creepy house, we’ve seen the hand of a monster that’s making its way around the location, and...

When a filmmaker takes on a story based on the crimes committed by a real serial killer, they have to walk a fine line. If they cross that line, it can feel disrespectful to the victims… and can even seem like they’re glorifying the killer. That’s not something Devanny Pinn intends to do with her feature directorial debut a 1970s serial killer tale called Black Mass. Speaking with Rue Morgue, she revealed that Black Mass focuses on the victims rather than the killer.
Inspired by real events, Black Mass is set over a 24-hour period in Florida during the winter of 1978 when college girls were being stalked by a serial killer. Eric Pereira and Brandon Slagle wrote the screenplay. Cast members include Lew Temple (The Devil’s Rejects), Jeremy London (Mallrats), Lisa Wilcox (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master), Michelle Romano (Escape From Ensenada), Kathleen Kinmont...

Stars: Shannon Dalonzo, Justin Gordon, Simon Phillips, Eileen Dietz, James Politano, Briahn Auguillard | Written by Noah Bessey | Directed by Robert Gajic
Opening his directorial debut in an intriguing manner, Robert Gajic has a woman’s voiceover share the character’s biggest fear at losing someone she cannot imagine life without. Quick cuts on-screen show a frightened woman chased by an unseen figure as credits roll, with the juxtaposition of audible love and visual fear crafting an intrigue for what circumstances will occur. Sadly, what unfolds cannot match this initial intrigue.
Fiancées Sarah (Shannon Dalonzo) and Michael (Justin Gordon) are driving across a desert setting, passing the time with hypothetical situations. They’re journeying to visit Sarah’s ill father, as she hopes he’ll be able to attend their wedding. Their ham-fisted dialogue is interrupted by the car hitting something, despite there being no sign of whatever they hit.

Thorns: "Something terribly wrong is happening inside NASA’s Iron Mountain observatory. It received an image from a deep space probe from what appears to be the edge of the solar system. On screen an eclipsed planet of unknown origin. Could this be the fabled 9th planet mankind has been searching for? An eerie signal transmits over the speakers, a rhythmic drone possibly a signal from the planet? But wait, something more. Deep within the signal, a faint sinister chatter. It sounds demonic. Have we discovered life across the galaxy? Down the hall, a distraught scientist, Dr. Malik. sits on the cold restroom floor looking unkept and unshaven. He hasn’t slept in days and appears deeply unnerved. Voices in his head motivate him to the mirror where he looks deep into his eyes. Wait, what is that? Something crawling in his eye? A black shape slithers across his sclera.

Amazon : The Last Slay Ride
How did you get attached to The Last Slay Ride? – I had worked with the director (Jason Hawkins) on the last two of his projects prior to “Last Slay Ride”. One of which (Deleted) I played the lead role in. I chalk it up to the right place, right time, and a familiarity with the overall team.
What was your role in The Last Slay Ride? – I played the role of Josh. the director of the fictional film “Slash camp”, and bumbling fool that attempts to lead his friends through a fight of good and evil.
What is your favorite scene in the film? – I think my favorite scene was also my favorite to film; The Big vampire reveal. Which was some of the first stuff we shot, day three or four if I remember correctly.

Guillermo del Toro's "Cabinet of Curiosities" is a collection of many wonders. The new spooky anthology presented by the famed filmmaker has a little bit of everything, from eldritch terrors to giant rats to malevolent moisturizers. It also has a clear standout story in David Prior's "The Autopsy," which is by far the most viscerally scary entry in the show's eight-episode first season.
If you haven't yet caught up on "Cabinet of Curiosities," which is wrapping up its four-night run on Netflix, be warned that we're about to get into the gory details of "The Autopsy" here. The episode starts off as more of a slow burn than most, with a forensic pathologist named Dr. Winters (F. Murray Abraham) consulting on a strange case with his old friend, Sheriff Craven (Glynn Turman). The pair are investigating missing person cases that lead them to Elliott (Luke Roberts), who Dr.

Of the Devil sees actor Kelton Jones return to the directors’ chair five years after helming his disturbing first feature, Dry Blood. This time around he’s working from a script he wrote based on an idea by James Cullen Bressack.
The film opens in the basement of a nightclub. A group of devil worshippers slice open a young woman and remove something that looks like a shark’s tooth-shaped cocoon from her body. In the next scene, the item is hidden in the corner of a fence. A bright blue butterfly of the species “CGIus Obvious” flutters around it and a young boy named Alex (Lucas Sequeira; In the Death Room) is playing on the other side of the fence.

"Do you think this is some form of obsession?" Uncork'd Entertainment has revealed an official trailer for Of the Devil, an indie supernatural horror thriller from filmmaker Kelton Jones. This will be arriving on VOD in August, and hasn't played at any festivals. Of the Devil follows a family desperate to find a cure for their young son's brain cancer. When unconventional treatments lead to the child being possessed by an ancient evil, the parents must fight not only for the child's life but his very soul. Sounds quite unspectacular, unfortunately. With Vernon Wells, Robert Lasardo, Devanny Pinn, Vicki Gunvalson, Jonathan Stoddard, and Eileen Dietz (who was "Pazuzu's Face" in The Exorcist). This looks like bargain bin junk, but that's obvious considering no one has heard of this film. Not worth it unless you really dig cheap horror. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Kelton Jones' Of the Devil, direct...

Seemingly inspired by mumblecore filmmaking, Assholes actually plays out more like Troma’s take on the Brian Yuzna film Society, and under their auspices would have been titled something like “Attack of the Killer Assholes” or “New York Assholes Must Die.”
The story centres around three self-absorbed twenty-somethings coping with mumblecore ennui through drugs, therapy and family dinners. Adam, played by writer/director Peter Vack, is too busy getting stoned to pay attention to the fact that his now-sober sister, Adah, desperately wants his attention, and their parents’ attention, or anyone’s sexual attention – as she tells her analyst. Desperately horny, she hooks up with Adam’s best friend, Aaron (Jack Dunphy), whose anal obsession literally plumbs new depths of perversion.

Not the full Haley Joel Osment, you understand, but what we’ll call a seventh sense. I’d catch glimpses of something out of the corner of my eye, and my mind would fill in the blanks with spooky imagery because I was consuming so much of it.
It didn’t help that my son had just been born. Lack of sleep combined with horror movie overload is a condition I wouldn’t wish on anyone. Night becomes dawn becomes day – the full George A Romero – and reality becomes harder and harder to rely upon.
Driving past the local garage one evening, I saw a Creepshow skeleton caked with remnants of clinging skin staring out at me from the front seat of a car. Watching The Great British Bake Off,...
