“Queen Rock Montreal” will make its global streaming premiere May 15 on Disney+ as the first concert film available with Imax Enhanced sound by DTS.
When it arrived in theaters in January, the remastered 1981 concert was Imax’s biggest exclusive engagement. Now, it will debut on Disney+ alongside 18 Marvel films that will also be offered with Imax Enhanced sound on supported devices, Imax’s senior VP and head of Imax post and image capture Bruce Markoe announced during a panel Sunday at the Nab Show in Las Vegas.
The original concerts, featuring Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon, took place over two consecutive nights in November 1981, and were arranged specifically to be filmed for a full-length concert film to document their live show. The performance includes classics such as “Another One Bites the Dust,” “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Somebody to Love.” It was restored for Imax by Mercury Studios.

During a resurgence in concert films, Imax is releasing a dynamic, digitally remastered version of a classic Queen performance featuring Freddie Mercury, Brain May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon, which will have a limited run Jan. 18-21 in select Imax locations.
Queen Rock Montreal, directed by Saul Swimmer for Mercury Studios, originates from filming two consecutive performances in Montreal during 1981. To create the imagery, the original 35mm negative was rescanned at 4K and restored for the release at OnSight, a London-based postproduction company, and Imax.
The songs were remixed from a 2007 5.1 version of the concert, and are now presented in Imax’s 12.0 sound format. The sound restoration was completed at London’s Halo, where the team worked with Kris Fredriksson and Justin Shirley-Smith from Queen Productions. Fifty years on from Queen’s debut album, guitarist Brian May reckoned the band would still be rocking the world if Freddie Mercury were still with us. The guitar legend reveals he still “misses the butterflies” he would feel while watching the flamboyant frontman strut his stuff on stage, reports Mirror.co.uk.
“Freddie was a fantastic mate and a great brother,” he said. “I liked it when he broke the rules, what he said to the audience and the risk he took. I am sure if he was here today we would still be doing it and the mothership would still be steaming around the world, because he lived for music and lived for the band – it was his family.”
As per Mirror.co.uk, Bandmates Brian, Freddie, Roger Taylor and John Deacon put out their self-titled first LP on July 13, 1973, on Emi in the UK and Elektra Records in the US.

On 23rd November 1991 Freddie Mercury announced to the world that he had AIDS and the next day he died peacefully at his home. He remains the most high profile loss from the disease in the entertainment world and the news shocked fans throughout the world. As a tribute ‘Bohemian Rhapsody /These Are The Days Of Our Lives’ was released as a double A-sided single to raise funds for the Terence Higgins Trust. It entered the UK chart at No. 1, where it stayed for five weeks, raising over £1,000,000 for the charity, and Queen became the first band to have the same single top the UK charts twice. In December of that year Queen had 10 albums in the UK Top 100. In 1992 Freddie was awarded posthumously the Brit’s “Outstanding Contribution to British Music” and ‘Days Of Our Lives’ won Best Single. In April, many of the world’s top stars joined Brian May,...

A lot goes into making an album, but some fans believe bands do even more work than is apparent by slipping hidden messages into their songs. Some of these supposed secret transmissions from musicians are nefarious or conspiratorial, while others are relatively benign. Regardless, here are three bands that some believe placed hidden messages in their songs.
Freddie Mercury, John Deacon, and Brian May | Express Newspapers/Getty Images The Beatles
John Lennon sparked conspiracy theories when he admitted to placing a backward message in a song.
“On the end of ‘Rain’ you hear me singing it backwards,” he told Rolling Stone in 1968. “We’d done the main thing at Emi and the habit was then to take the songs home and see what you thought a little extra gimmick or what the guitar piece would be.”
From there, fans began poring over the band’s lyrics in search of other hidden messages.

"Weird: The Al Yankovic Story" is one of the funniest movies of 2022, and I will die on this hill. The fake totally accurate biopic stars Daniel Radcliffe of "Harry Potter" fame as the accordion-playing songster who brought us such classics as "Like a Surgeon," "Amish Paradise," and "Eat It," which are parodies of "Like a Virgin," "Gangster's Paradise," and "Beat It," in case you somehow didn't know.
The film tells the not-so very real tale of Al's life, from his father's disapproval of his wild accordion-playing days to his rock star bingeing to his toxic romantic relationship with Madonna (Evan Rachel Wood in the best casting choice of the year). Of course, none all of this is true, and it makes for a fun story.
One of the best scenes in the film is a pool party where a young Al meets pretty much every niche superstar who was famous in the 1970s and 1980s,...

Lewis Capaldi has joked that he plans on “retiring from public life” if his new single “flops”.
The singer will release the single “Forget Me” on Friday (9 September). It is the first song to be released from his second album, the follow up to his 2019 hit debut Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent.
To celebrate the song’s release, Capaldi has appeared on a series of billboards wearing underwear and a pair of sunglasses.
In an interview with The Sun, Capaldi was asked if he planned to pivot to a career in comedy, should the song fail to reach the successes of his hit “Someone You Loved”.
“No, I won’t,” Capaldi said. “If it flops I will retire from public life. I’ll be like John Deacon in Queen. No one’s heard of that c*** in ages.”
He continued: “There’s me, a man who, let’s not beat around the bush,...

Photo ‘Freddie Mercury: The Final Act’ Landing on The CW, this documentary was honestly a bumpy ride for me. It was a great documentary, very insightful, and full of clips and recordings of some of my favorite artists of the ‘70s and ‘80s. However, it was also a bit of a downer. I guess I should have expected this from a doc titled, “The Final Act,” but I guess I figured since it was Queen and my dear Freddie Mercury, how could it not be an adrenaline-pumping power ballad? And, I must admit, at parts, it still indeed was. Not only did we get to hear excerpts and performances of the entire band of Queen, but I was also ecstatic to see and hear the likes of Elton John, David Bowie, George Michael, and Def Leppard. It was also incredibly refreshing to get to see these artists as they were,...

Premiering on Feb. 14, 1992, Wayne’s World was a Valentine’s Day gift to heavy metal music. Starring Mike Myers as lo-fi cable host Wayne Campbell and Dana Carvey as his best friend/chimp/“with you as always” Garth Algar, the film followed in the tradition of The Blues Brothers, a Saturday Night Live skit that became a big screen buddy movie which had that box office “schwing.” Both films highlighted a particular music genre, and each brought on experts in the sonic reality.

During the past five decades, Rob Halford has been instrumental in defining the sound and look of heavy metal as the frontman for Judas Priest and with his own groups, Fight, 2wo, and Halford. In that time, the artist — who recently released his memoir, Confess — earned himself the nickname “The Metal God” and has sung alongside Black Sabbath, Metallica, and Pantera. But he’s always had diverse tastes, as shown by Priest’s covers of Joan Baez’s “Diamonds and Rust” or Fleetwood Mac’s “The Green Manalishi.”

The Simpsons, season 31, episode 3, "The Fat Blue Line," is a supporting character-led episode, focusing on Chief Clancy Wiggum, the worst cop the state attorney's investigating officer ever had the pleasure of humiliating in front of his men. While stories focusing on secondary character stories on The Simpsons have had as mixed success as Wiggum's policing, this episode works with only minor appearances from the titular family itself.

This news came straight from Rudi Dolezal, a director behind many of the band’s videos and a close friend of Freddie Mercury. To be very clear: we have no idea whether or not this is true. And even if it is being discussed it doesn’t mean anything will ever happen. But that doesn’t mean we can’t try to imagine what a Bohemian Rhapsody sequel might look like.

Adam Lambert and the gang have officially booked their place in the Dolby Theater ahead of this Sunday’s Oscars ceremony.
That’s right; Queen will perform at the 2019 Academy Awards on the heels of Bohemian Rhapsody and its global success story. Lambert will once again take to the stage, having fronted the band since 2011, and though bassist John Deacon won’t be in attendance, Queen fans can still look forward to Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor lighting up the Dolby Theater with a collection of the band’s greatest hits.
“We Are the Champions” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” are sure to feature, having gained a boon in popularity (and sales!) in the wake of Fox and Dexter Fletcher’s Freddie Mercury biopic. Speaking of which, the film itself is up for the coveted Best Picture, while Mr. Robot star Rami Malek has been nominated for the Best Actor gong...

Queen will perform at the Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday, the Motion Picture Academy announced on social media today. The move, which is not completely a surprise, comes in the wake of the blockbuster success of “Bohemian Rhapsody,” the biopic about the band and its late singer, Freddie Mercury.
The band now performs under the name Queen + Adam Lambert, with two of the four original members, guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, fronted by former “American Idol” star Adam Lambert, who has won critical applause in his role as the group’s frontman over the past few years. Bassist John Deacon has not performed with Queen for many years.
As previously reported by Variety, the telecast’s producers were known to have reached out to reps for the film and the band early in the planning process to try to procure Queen for the opening slot of the show.

Bohemian Rhapsody soars on the strength of a performance by Rami Malek, who got under the skin of iconic Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in a way that has made him the prohibitive favorite in the Oscar Best Actor race. The film chronicles the formation, rise, and adversity weathered by the band before its titanic 1985 Live Aid turn that is still considered one of the greatest concert performances ever turned in by a super group. The picture has been a passion project for guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, who were the creative consultants on the film and who rose to fame with the late Mercury and bass player John Deacon.
Considering that its director Bryan Singer was fired two weeks before production was completed, the film has surprisingly soared like no rock biopic before it, on the strength of the performances and a rocking soundtrack featuring Queen’s signature tunes.

Jurassic Park was "alive" at the 2019 Critics' Choice Awards. That's according to Laura Dern, who shared a sweet reunion and stopped to take a selfie with Joe Mazzello at the event. Though it might be hard to tell because he's a full adult now - time flies, huh? - Mazzello portrayed Tim Murphy, grandson to Jurassic Park's kooky creator, in the beloved '90s film. The actor would go on to appear in the sequel, while Dern had a brief appearance in the third installment. Mazzello shared the same selfie on his Instagram, and described it as the highlight of his night.
Dern was at the award show because she was nominated for best actress in a movie made for TV or limited series for her role in The Tale. Mazzello, meanwhile, was in attendance with the Bohemian Rhapsody cast, as he portrayed Queen bassist John Deacon in the film.

To recap: Bohemian Rhapsody was the upset of the evening, clinching the gong for Best Motion Picture – Drama from a category that included A Star is Born, If Beale Street Could Talk, BlacKKKlansman and Marvel’s Black Panther.
Impressive though that may be, Bohemian Rhapsody‘s triumph wasn’t without its controversy, given how Rotten Tomatoes confirmed earlier this week that it’s now officially the worst-reviewed Golden Globe winner (62 percent) since Meryl Streep’s Out of Africa from 1985, the same year in which Queen took the world by storm with their unforgettable Live Aid performance.

Remember the scene in A Star Is Born where Lady Gaga is onstage at the Grammys and Bradley Cooper collapses in a boozy stupor and she tells the audience how much fun they’re having? The 2019 Golden Globes made that moment last over three hours. That’s the point — this is always the tackiest, messiest, ditziest and drunkest of award shows. I didn’t have particularly high hopes for Bohemian Rhapsody, but despite its torturous production, it turned out way better than I expected. My favorite sequence by far was the film’s climactic recreation of Queen’s iconic performance during 1985’s Live Aid. This was perhaps the highlight of the band’s career, showcasing Freddie Mercury at his most potent and powerful. So, the news that the upcoming home video release will include a full recreation of it is good to hear as far as I’m concerned.
20th Century Fox revealed what we should expect earlier today, and on top of the full 22-minute recreation of Live Aid, we’ll also get a couple of making-of documentaries entitled Rami Malek: Becoming Freddie, The Look and Sound of Queen and Recreating Live Aid. On a Thursday afternoon in Los Angeles, between stacks of colorful album covers by the Beatles, Elvis Presley, David Bowie and many more, Rami Malek demonstrated the moves that helped him bring legendary Queen frontman Freddie Mercury back to life in “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Assuming Mercury’s iconic stance, thrusting his arm forward into that familiar full-power fist pump and then segueing into a stomping tap dance that he likened to “squashing worms on the pavement,” Malek proved that even in a cramped record-store aisle, he had those iconic Mercury moves down.

Few actors would be capable of bringing Freddie Mercury to life on the big screen and fewer still would be able to convince moviegoers that they are, in fact, the iconic singer. And yet, here we are, with Mr. Robot‘s Rami Malek having accomplished exactly that with Bohemian Rhapsody.
Malek’s casting certainly drew some criticism when it was first announced, but there’s no denying that the actor looks the part as Queen’s legendary frontman and captures the persona of Freddie perfectly, especially in those scenes where he’s rocking out with his band on stage in front of a legion of screaming fans. And though the film itself ultimately turned out to be pretty enjoyable – even if critics haven’t exactly showered it with praise – it definitely didn’t have an easy road to theaters.

Bryan Singer’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” takes on the ride of legendary British rock band Queen, as well as the life of frontman Freddie Mercury. In the film, Queen’s record label at one time resisted releasing “Bohemian Rhapsody,” perhaps one of the band’s most famous songs, as a single — but did that really happen?
In the movie, band members Freddie Mercury (Rami Malek), Roger Taylor (Ben Hardy), Brian May (Gwilym Lee) and John Deacon (Joseph Mazzello) walk into Emi Records to play their single “Bohemian Rhapsody” of their new album, “A Night at the Opera.”
However, Emi executive Ray Foster, refuses to release the song as the band’s next single following “Killer Queen,” mainly because he didn’t understand the song and also thought a six-minute tune would never play on the radio.

The greatest visual strength of box-office hit “Bohemian Rhapsody” is conveying the evolution of Freddy Mercury (Rami Malek) and Queen amid the cultural shift of the ’70s and ’80s, climaxing with the legendary Live Aid concert in 1985. However, Live Aid was actually shot first, which turned out to be a blessing for Malek and co-stars Gwilym Lee (guitarist Brian May), Ben Hardy (drummer Roger Taylor), and Joseph Mazzello (bassist John Deacon).
“It’s kind of a crazy thing to start the shoot with one of the hardest and most pivotal moments,” said Newton Thomas Sigel, director Bryan Singer’s go-to cinematographer. “But it allowed the cast to come together early and create their chemistry. I remember watching them rehearse three days before the shoot. They didn’t know each other and those four guys really jelled, just like a rock’n’roll band would.”

The rock music golden age in which Queen took off, showcased in Bohemian Rhapsody, was one we’ll probably never see again.
Even though it’s not a great film, there are a number of things about the new Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody, that are quite enjoyable. Chief among them are the performance of Rami Malek as lead singer Freddie Mercury, along with the work by Gwilym Lee, Ben Hardy, and Joseph Mazzello as fellow band members Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon respectively. There’s also that climactic performance at Live Aid, which provides an electric, emotional and truly rousing finale to a movie that, while entertaining, often feels like a condensed Cliff’s Notes version of the history of one of rock’s most unique and inimitable bands.

“He’s a real, great English eccentric,” said actor Gwilym Lee about Queen guitarist Brian May, who he plays in the film “Bohemian Rhapsody.” “He’s got so many facets to his character. He’s a Ph.D in astrophysics specializing in interplanetary dust and the refraction of light off of it. He’s a big animal rights activist. He’s an expert on stereoscopic 3D photography … And that’s the same man that goes out on stage in front of tens of thousands of people and plays guitar like no one else.” Lee was in New York on October 28 to discuss “Rhapsody” along with co-stars Rami Malek, Joe Mazzello and Lucy Boynton. Bohemian Rhapsody doesn’t let Freddie Mercury actually perform until the very end. Before then, there are glimpses of performances that place lead actor Rami Malek center stage, but music’s greatest frontman deserves more than mere glimpses and simple montages that pull the plug on “Killer Queen,” “Fat Bottom Girls,” and “Another One Bites the Dust” far too quickly. I’ll admit that there was a certain pep in my step walking out of Bohemian Rhapsody, but that’s what happens when “Don’t Stop Me Now” plays as the credits rock and roll.
Starting and ending with the triumphant Live Aid concert, Rhapsody is much more the story of Queen than it is of its headliner. Beginning in 1970 with a flamboyant and teeth-riddled Freddie meeting up with the band that his charisma would soon turn into Queen, the film hits the basic checkpoints along a 15-year-long musical highway.
