Three-time Oscar-nominated director Chris Sandlers and Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o previewed unfinished footage of DreamWorks Animation’s “The Wild Robot” at CinemaCon — what Sandlers says took inspiration from Disney classics and Hayao Miyazaki’s work, resulting in an original visual style that he described as “a Monet painting in a Miyazaki forest.”
Based on Peter Brown’s book, the story follows Roz, a robot voiced by Nyong’o, who is accidentally marooned on an uninhabited island. There, the city robot meets and learns from the animals in her new environment.
In this rich world, a fox meets and advises Roz. “You need to learn how things work on this island, and kindness is not a survival skill,” the fox says.
Soon Roz watches a gosling hatch, who believes Roz is his mother. They form a bond as Roz tries to figure out how the baby can learn to swim and fly.

“The Croods” and “How to Train Your Dragon” filmmaker Chris Sanders is returning to DreamWorks Animation with “The Wild Robot,” a new animated feature based on the New York Times best-selling book by Peter Brown. Sanders wrote the script and is directing the project.
Jeff Hermann is producing “The Wild Robot” and Sanders’ longtime creative collaborator Dean DeBlois will executive produce. No release date has been set. But you can still get very excited.
“The Wild Robot” follows Rozzum 7134 (“Roz” for short), a futuristic robot that washes ashore on a deserted island. From there, according to the official synopsis, “a tale of survival and discovery begins when she becomes the unexpected protector to an orphaned gosling, which she names Brightbill. Together they struggle to survive the harsh environment, but only succeed with the help of a close-knit group of misfit animals, who become first friends, then family. Ultimately Roz and...

Now that the first weekend of August is in the books, the most competitive part of the summer is over, giving us a reasonably good idea of what this year's biggest movie season looked like. Barring any surprise breakouts over the next few weeks, it's safe to call it a mixed bag. Sure, we had gargantuan hits like "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer," but we had massive flops like "The Flash" and "Haunted Mansion." Yet, while high-profile misfires took the lion's share of the spotlight, it was "Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken" that slipped through the cracks as one of the summer's biggest duds. More than that, it may end up as the lowest-grossing movie in DreamWorks Animation's history.
After a miserable sixth weekend in which the film grossed a mere $30,000 domestically, "Ruby Gillman" has earned just $40.8 million worldwide. This includes a truly miserable $15.6 million domestically. Against a $70 million budget, Universal Pictures...

DreamWorks Animation’s “Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken” (in theater’s now) is a different kind of undersea adventure.
The title character is a seemingly regular teenage girl living in the town of Oceanside (voiced by Lana Condor) who knows that her family is keeping something from her but doesn’t understand that she is actually the latest descendant in an underwater kraken kingdom. Thankfully, she reconnects with her grandmother (Jane Fonda) and together they unlock her kraken powers. Or maybe the right phrase is release the kraken.
And she’ll need it, as she’s got to do battle with a cute, popular girl who is also an evil mermaid. This leads to an unexpectedly epic kaiju battle between mermaid and kraken that is pretty amazing.
TheWrap spoke to director Kirk DeMicco, who helmed “Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken” (with co-director Faryn Pearl), shortly before the movie’s splashy (get it?...

Warning: This post contains plot spoilers from “Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken.”
Lana Condor, who voices the lead in “Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken,” finds Dreamworks’ first female title character very relatable.
Ruby lives in Oceanside with her family, who disguise their secret Kraken identities by claiming they moved from Canada. Unaware of her Kraken lineage, she worries more about typical teenage things like the boy she has a crush on, Connor (Jaboukie Young-White) and the upcoming prom that she wants to attend with her friends.
“I’ve always wanted to work with DreamWorks. I think like so. For so many people in the world, DreamWorks is a major part of their childhood, and growing up, I am and was just such a fan of movies. DreamWorks movies are comfort films,” Condor told TheWrap. “What I loved about it is that it is DreamWorks’ first female title character. I was really excited...

Jane Fonda voices Grandmamah in DreamWorks Animation’s Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, directed by Kirk DeMicco. Jane Fonda is well past the point where she needs to make movies, yet she’s made three that have been released in the first half of 2023: 80 for Brady, Book Club: The Next Chapter, and the new animated film Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken. And it’s not like she’s doing a voice cameo in Ruby Gillman, either — as the title character’s grandmother, she plays a pivotal role in the film. When we spoke to Fonda, she told us why she was so excited to add the movie to her already-busy schedule.(Click on the media bar below to hear Jane Fonda) https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Jane_Fonda_Themes_RubyGillman_Teenage_Kraken.mp3 Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is now playing in theaters.

Ruby Gillman (Lana Condor) and Grandmamah (Jane Fonda) in DreamWorks Animation’s ‘Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken’
For decades, movies have been telling stories of various sea creatures residing in the oceans, ranging from man-eating sharks to friendly whales, beautiful mermaids, and even a fish searching for his lost son. However, the latest animated coming-of-age comedy by DreamWorks, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, tells the story of perhaps the most misunderstood sea creature of them all – the Kraken.
The film opens in the little town of Oceanside, where 15-year-old Ruby Gillman (voiced by Lana Condor) does her best to fit in at school by posing as a human, even though she’s a sea creature. She has a group of friends and is working up the courage to ask her crush, skater-boy Connor (voiced by Jaboukie Young-White), to the prom. The problem is that her mom, Agatha (voiced by Toni Collette), won...

Things have certainly gotten interesting recently with the Summer box office. Usually, we’d be talking about the records being broken by the superhero franchises or the big action-adventure “tentpoles”. Then a big switch happened last weekend when the first two spots in the weekly Bo “Top Tens” were animated features. Studio wisdom was the notion that animated flicks would “cancel each other out” hurting the ticket sales on both. Nope, not this time, though the rapid downhill trajectory of a certain scarlet speedster aided their performance. Could this brand-new animated feature snag a spot in the top five with the other two holdovers? Mind you, that globetrotting archeologist will crack his bullwhip into the upper slots on the roster. However, families may want to return to the sea after that recent Disney live-action remake and dive into the adventures of another mythical nautical being, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken.

You’ve encountered Ruby Gillman, the protagonist of DreamWorks’ latest venture, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, before: She’s a nerdy teen (math is her favorite subject), who survives the cliquishness of high school with her close friends (they call themselves “the squad”). She frets about the usual affairs of adolescence, like asking her crush to prom and evading her mother’s watchful gaze. Her parents love her, but could stand to dial back their overprotective instincts. And, oh, Ruby has a big secret: She’s a kraken.
Like a host of supernatural creatures and people before her (Miles Morales of Spider-Man, which would make a pleasant double bill with this film; Darby of Darby and the Dead; and Wei-Chen in American Born Chinese), Ruby lives a double life. She can’t tell her friends that she’s a squid-like creature who, legends say, destroys ships and their sailors. Her parents moved to Oceanside,...

Audiences might bemoan the lack of original thinking at the movies these days — all those sequels, remakes, and reboots! — but even new ideas can feel suddenly played out when faced with the horrifying specter of parallel thinking. Consider everything from “Deep Impact” and “Armageddon” to “Dante’s Peak” and “Volcano,” “Capote” and “Infamous” to “No Strings Attached” and “Friends with Benefits,” and those are just contemporary examples of the phenomenon. If you’ve got an idea for a movie — hopefully, a good one to boot — chances are, someone else has it, too. And they may even have it at the exact same time.
Such is the case with Kirk DeMicco and Faryn Pearl’s “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken,” which arrives on the heels (fins? paws?) of some very similar other animated adventures, like Pixar’s superior “Turning Red” and the studio’s less thrilling entry “Luca,” both of which use monstrous...

Kirk DeMicco’s Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken feels torn between being a story of racial difference and offering a compelling vision of teenage growing pains. Sweet but narratively thin and didactic, the latest from DreamWorks Animation always seems as if it’s trying to find its footing, which is apt insofar as its main character, a 15-year-old champion mathlete named Ruby (Lana Condor), is trying to understand her place in the world.
Ruby goes through high school wondering why her parents, Agatha (Toni Collette) and Arthur (Colman Domingo), are so strict about keeping her away from sea water. And, unfortunately for Ruby, that includes not being able to attend her high school prom, as it’s set to take place on a massive cruise ship in the ocean. Toni Collette voices Agatha Gillman in DreamWorks Animation’s Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, directed by Kirk DeMicco. While Disney has gone the live-action route with its adaptation of The Little Mermaid, DreamWorks is going animated with its new seafaring story — which, yes, does include a mermaid. Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken tells the story of a girl who learns she’s secretly a sea monster and inadvertently wades a little too deep into a longstanding conflict between the krakens and the mermaids. Toni Collette voices the teen’s mother, and she talked to us about the reasons why she loves the film. If you’re going to make a movie about a kraken — those giant multi-tentacled sea monsters believed to wrestle ships from below — then computer animation is hands down the way to go. The trouble with doing so at a major American studio is that it comes with the imperative to turn these fantastical creatures into cutesy-wootsy kid-movie fodder, which is precisely what DreamWorks Animation does with the reasonably clever myth-twisting toon “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken.” The creative team’s high-concept take suggests “Twilight” as a (literal) fish-out-of-water comedy, wherein a family of blue-skinned squid-things attempt to pass as human.
Fifteen years ago, Agatha (voiced by Toni Collette) and Peter (Colman Domingo) abandoned the ocean to raise their kids on land. Despite the obvious hurdles — their conspicuous cerulean tint, floppy limbs and invertebrate status — they’ve been reasonably successful at blending in. Anytime someone looks suspicious, Ruby (Lana Condor) just says she’s from Canada,...

DreamWorks Animation is committing to “subverting the hero’s journey,” said president Margie Cohn at Annecy, introducing “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken” and “Orion and the Dark.”
One of the big U.S. world premieres at Annecy, the world’s biggest animation festival, “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken” featured at a DreamWorks Animation studio focus at Annecy, the world’s biggest animation festival.
“DreamWorks has a long tradition of taking an unlikely hero, like a chubby panda or an ogre with a heart of gold, and subverting your expectations. We will take what you think might be an evil sea monster and convince you she is actually the hero,” “Ruby Gillman” producer, Kelly Cooney Cilella, added.
Commenting also on the company’s long list of strong female characters, from Princess Fiona to Princess Poppy from “Trolls, she added that “We think Ruby is next. And this time, she is in the title.

Dreamworks Animation announced Tuesday during the Annecy International Animation Festival that production of Orion and the Dark, an animated feature penned by Charlie Kaufman, will come to Netflix in 2024.
Based on the book by Emma Yarlett, the story follows Orion, an anxious young boy voiced by Jacob Tremblay, who is afraid of the dark. Then, the literal embodiment of his worst fear — “the Dark” (voiced by Paul Walter Hauser) — pays him a visit to prove there is nothing to be afraid of in the night. Orion must decide if he can learn to accept the unknown and embrace the joy of living.
“It has the Charlie Kaufman stuff in it,” said producer Peter McCown of the offbeat story by the Oscar winner, whose writing credits include Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Anomolisa and Synecdoche, New York.
The filmmakers aimed to give Orion — which is set outside...

Paramount’s animated reboot “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” doesn’t hit theaters until August, but the film made a splash on Monday at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival where it debuted to a rousing reception complete with a six-minute standing ovation. The crowd’s applause was so strong, in fact, that director Jeff Rowe was dragged back onstage to take it all in.
“Being in the room and feeling all the reactions and hearing all the laughter was amazing, but what really stood out to me was to see our movie received and appreciated in that way by a lot of people who really love and care about animation,” Rowe told TheWrap in a statement.
The cut screened at Annecy had just a few scenes of rough animation but was otherwise complete (including a score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross). Those in the audience included “The Mitchells vs. the Machines...

Exclusive: Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken has a lot going for her.
For starters, says the film’s director Kirk DeMicco, “she’s a princess, a superhero” and the first female titular character for a DreamWorks Animation movie.
Of course, there have been female lead characters in DreamWorks animated pictures, “but this is the first time where we said the story really is hers,” adds co-director Faryn Pearl (Trolls World Tour). “We changed the title from The Gillmans to Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken because it felt that we really wanted to celebrate that it’s her story, it’s her journey. And she’s our superhero, really.”
Alfred Tennyson wrote a sonnet called “The Kraken” — “far beneath the abysmal sea,” it sleepeth — and the mythical sea creature has made terrifying guest appearances in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, the animated movie Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation...

Hopefully, those May flowers will start blooming soon after the many April (and previous months’) showers. But whatever the weather, Netflix has a solid selection of new movies to watch this month.
Netflix’s May lineup has several bright and joyful animated films as well as more serious stories with light at the end of the tunnel. Tom Hanks’ latest theatrical release “A Man Called Otto” arrives on the streaming service, adapted from Frederick Backman’s book “A Man Called Ove” and following the story of a grumpy old man who struggles to find purpose in life after the death of his wife.
Animated adventures for the whole family include “The Croods” and “The Tale of Desperaux” which teach lessons of bravery in their own ways. For those in the mood for slightly quirkier stories, Jason Moore’s “Pitch Perfect” and “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events” should do the trick.

Dreamworks Animation got some help from Jack Black, Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake to highlight its upcoming slate, including Trolls Band Together — a new movie from its Trolls franchise set to open Nov. 17 — and Kung Fu Panda 4, slated for a March 8, 2024 release.
Jack Black — the voice of panda Po — got a hero’s welcome as he took the stage to introduce Kung Fu Panda 4. He described the story for the spring 2024 release via a comedic and dramatic monologue: “Po faces his biggest challenge ever. Will he survive?”
Black shared that Po is set to become the spiritual leader of his Valley of Peace, but also needs a succession plan for his role as the chosen Dragon Warrior. In the story, he also will train a new kung fu practitioner and meets a villain called the Chameleon who can summon villains from the past. “Po has to defeat every one of them,...

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
Particularly in light of his recent output, it's hard to think of a more remarkable career than that of Nicolas Cage. The man has had insanely high highs such as his Oscar-winning performance in "Leaving Las Vegas" and his starring role in blockbuster hits like "National Treasure." He's played a Marvel Comics superhero (Ghost Rider), he's starred in more direct-to-video movies than anyone can possibly recall, and he's turned in some legendarily wacky performances (see: "Vampire's Kiss"). He even battled himself in the summer of 1997.
The point is, Cage has had an amazing career that has recently revived itself in a huge way as of late thanks to stellar performances in movies like "Pig" and "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent." Yet,...

The official trailer for Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken has just been released. The film will be in theaters on June 30, 2023! “Sometimes the hero you are meant to be lies just beneath the surface.”
This summer, DreamWorks Animation dives into the turbulent waters of high school with a hilarious, heartfelt action comedy about a shy teenager who discovers that she’s part of a legendary royal lineage of mythical sea krakens and that her destiny, in the depths of the oceans, is bigger than she ever dreamed.
Sweet, awkward 16-year-old Ruby Gillman is desperate to fit in at Oceanside High, but she mostly just feels invisible. She’s math-tutoring her skater-boy crush (Jaboukie Young-White), who only seems to admire her for her fractals, and she’s prevented from hanging out with the cool kids at the beach because her over-protective supermom (Toni Collette), has forbade Ruby from ever getting in the water.

DreamWorks Animation has not only unveiled the existence of “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken,” they’ve also released the film’s first trailer.
The latest original feature from DreamWorks Animation, which is coming off the one-two punch of 2022’s “The Bad Guys” and the Oscar-nominated “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken” concerns the title character (voiced by Lana Condor), who is masquerading as a human and attending Oceanside High on land. Once she discovers her ancestral heritage, thanks to her grandmother (voiced by Jane Fonda), she is able to get in touch with all of her powers – both literal (laser eyes!) and emotional.
TheWrap spoke with director Kirk DeMicco, who co-directed “The Croods” with Chris Sanders for DreamWorks Animation, and producer Kelly Cooney Cilella, about where “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken” came from and what we can expect when the movie debuts this summer.
