In the last days of 2022, we learned that production had wrapped on the psychedelic horror film The Trip, which stars an impressive line-up of genre icons and regulars: Hannah Fierman (V/H/S/), Doug Bradley (Hellraiser), John Amplas (George A. Romero’s Martin), and Lori Cardille (Romero’s Day of the Dead). The presence of Amplas and Cardille in this film seemed especially fitting since The Trip was filmed in Pennsylvania, not far from Romero’s beloved Pittsburgh. Nearly ten months later, The Trip is now ready to start making its way out into the world – and the premiere is going to be held at the Lindsay Theater in Sewickley, Pennsylvania on October 26th! In anticipation of the premiere, a trailer has arrived online, and you can check it out in the embed above.

Written and directed by Dean Jacobs, The Trip has been described as “Deliverance meets The Amityville Horror, with just a dash of hallucinogenic drugs!” Another description says its “one part haunted house story, one part slasher film”, and repeats the “just a dash of hallucinogenic drugs” line. Here’s the synopsis: Four childhood friends take a weekend trip to a rural farmhouse in Pennsylvania. Expecting a relaxing weekend of excess, the group soon comes to find out, the house has something else planned.

Today sees the release of The Living Dead, George A. Romero’s previously unfinished novel, completed by Daniel Kraus. This all-new story set in Romero’s “Living Dead” world is available as a hardcover, but they’ve also brought the story to life in audiobook form, with narration by Lori Cardille (who portrayed Dr. Sarah Bowman in Romero’s Day of The Dead) and Bruce Davison.
I recently had a chance to catch up with Lori Cardille, and we talked about her work on the new audiobook, what to expect from The Living Dead, and her work on 1985’s cult classic Day of the Dead:

Before George A. Romero passed away in 2017, the legendary filmmaker was working on a novel — his first — called The Living Dead.
Conceived as an epic reboot/reinvention of the zombie horror genre he defined with his landmark 1968 film Night of the Living Dead, the book was set to encompass the entire world of Romero’s six Dead movies — including classics like Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead — while giving him the kind of free creative reign he never quite enjoyed with his films.
But we sadly lost Romero at the age of 77 three years ago, and The Living Dead — which he had been writing on and off for several years — was left uncompleted. Enter novelist Daniel Kraus (who co-wrote The Shape of Water with Guillermo del Toro), who with the encouragement and assistance of Romero’s widow Suzanne Desrocher-Romero and his agent, Chris Roe, took on the...

When legendary horror auteur George A. Romero set out to make Day of the Dead — the third chapter in a trilogy that included the wildly popular and groundbreaking Night of the Living Dead (1968) and Dawn of the Dead (1979) — he envisioned it as an epic conclusion to the story that he first began telling back in Pittsburgh in the late 1960s with a crew of friends and co-workers and a budget of just $114,000.
But the movie that Romero ended up making was not the one he started out with — and even though many were perhaps initially disappointed with Day of the Dead, it’s been re-evaluated over the years by fans, critics, and even by the late Romero himself, who wound up calling it his favorite of the original trilogy.
“When it first came out, the audience was like, ‘What the hell is this?’” says Lori Cardille, the Pittsburgh-based actress who...

Special Mention: The Most Dangerous Game
Directed by Irving Pichel and Ernest B. Schoedsack
Written by James Creelman
USA, 1932
Genre: Survival Horror
The first of many official and unofficial screen versions of Richard Connell’s short story of the same name, The Most Dangerous Game was made in 1932, in the era known as “Pre-Code Hollywood,” a time when filmmakers were able to get away with sexual innuendo, illegal drug use, adultery, abortion, intense violence, homosexuality, and much more. It was during this time that a film like The Most Dangerous Game was allowed to be made and shown to the general public without fear of censorship. The film was put together by producer Willis O’Brien while in pre-production on King Kong, and features several of the same cast and crew members, as well as props and sets from Kong. Despite these obvious cost-cutting measures, Dangerous Game never feels like a second-rate production,...

“That wasn’t very nice, you know. That wasn’t very nice at all. You can just sit there in the dark and think about what you’ve done. Think about it. Think.” Unfortunately for the diverse group of survivors holed up in a bunker in George A. Romero’s Day of the Dead, any noises they hear from aboveground around the holidays would not be Santa Claus and his reindeer, but rather the shambling zombies that have overrun the world. Romero’s third zombie movie and his personal favorite “Dead” film, Day of the Dead offers plenty for fans to enjoy: a search for a cure, bunker mentality, the intense Captain Rhodes, and perhaps the most beloved zombie of all time: Bub. First up is their limited edition box set, which you can see above. For $47.95, you get yourself a t-shirt, prismatic sticker, 11"x17" art print and even a cannister that contains rocks from the actual underground mine that Romero shot the majority of the film in. This incredible offering is available to the first 500 people who lay claim to it, and all of the contents will be housed inside of a collector's box, adorned with the same art featured on the shirt, poster and sticker.

Every year, we here at Sound On Sight celebrate the month of October with 31 Days of Horror; and every year, I update the list of my favourite horror films ever made. Last year, I released a list that included 150 picks. This year, I’ll be upgrading the list, making minor alterations, changing the rankings, adding new entries, and possibly removing a few titles. I’ve also decided to publish each post backwards this time for one reason: the new additions appear lower on my list, whereas my top 50 haven’t changed much, except for maybe in ranking. I am including documentaries, short films and mini series, only as special mentions – along with a few features that can qualify as horror, but barely do.
****
Special Mention:
Häxan
Directed by Benjamin Christensen
Denmark / Sweden, 1922
Häxan (a.k.a The Witches or Witchcraft Through The Ages) is a 1922 silent documentary about the history of witchcraft,...

Chicago – Scream Factory refuses to let up, releasing four more stellar Blu-ray editions that will just add to the debt of hardcore horror fans. Not all four of these films are great on their own but they’re all great Blu-ray releases, full of special features and with some truly amazing transfers. Genre junkies, like myself, should own all four, even “Psycho III.” Sorry. Maybe you can take out a loan. It’s not my fault. Don’t shoot the horror messenger.
The first thing one notices about any of the four new Scream Factory releases this month — “Psycho II,” “Psycho III,” “Prince of Darkness,” and “Day of the Dead” — is that they look absolutely fantastic. Scream Factory’s HD transfers are approaching the best on the market, up there with the Criterion Collection. “Day of the Dead,” in particular, is just stunning. I’ve seen the movie several times,...

When George A. Romero's Day of the Dead premiered on Friday, July 19, 1985, it was released in the same fashion that his Dawn of the Dead was distributed seven years earlier, which is to say without an MPAA rating. The poster sported the caveat (or allure, depending on your point of view): “Due to scenes of violence, which may be considered shocking, no one under 17 admitted.” Widely considered as an independent maverick in the film industry, Mr. Romero once again decided not to submit his film to the ratings board knowing full well that they would demand extensive cuts, leaving most of Tom Savini and Greg Nicotero’s best work on the cutting room floor. One of the major problems with releasing a film unrated is that the perception is that it is, in fact, a self-imposed X-rating. An “X” generally means death at the box office,...
