While Jeremy Renner continues to gain attention for his superhero work, his other work shows his acting chops. While Mayor of Kingstown suffered for being too dark and depressing in its first season, the show mellowed out considerably in the second season. Still, with enough plot threads to sort through and a changing cast, Season 3 required a light reset. While there were doubts the show would ever return, Season 3 proves its most compelling narrative yet.

Plot: In season three, a series of explosions rock Kingstown and its citizens, as a new face of the Russian mob sets up shop in the city, and a drug war rages inside and outside prison walls. The pressure is on Mike McLusky (Renner) to end the war but things get complicated when a familiar face from his incarcerated past threatens to undermine the Mayor’s attempts to keep the peace among all factions.
Review: Twelve months after his near-fatal accident, Jeremy Renner began production on the third season of Mayor of Kingstown. Seeing the Avengers star back on his feet and in character as Mike McLusky is an impressive sight as he slips back into his character’s rumpled suit and takes charge of the various factions, criminal and non, in the Michigan city. David Guglielmo doesn’t have an acting background, but he has an empathy and understanding for actors that serves him – and others – as a casting director. It might come from his background as a writer/director, which he notes is a form of performance in many ways. “When you’re writing, you’re every character. You’re feeling those emotions and traveling with them,” he notes. “And when you direct, you have to speak the langue of actors, to understand where they’re coming from and what they need.” He adds that nothing compares to a great performance. “Even if you watch a movie that’s a little rough around the edges, if the acting is there, it’s going to pull you in. And it can be one of the most powerful experiences you can have in art.”

Tom Felton, best-known for his role as Draco Malfoy in the “Harry Potter” franchise, is to star in the $15 million action/sci-fi film “Altered,” alongside Richard Brake, Igor Jijikine (“Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”), Aggy K. Adams (“The Witcher”) and Liza Bugulova.
The film is set in an alternate present, where most of the human population have undergone genetic enhancements. Two courageous outcasts, Leon (Felton) and Chloe (Bugulova), become embroiled in a battle for justice within a society fractured by genetic disparity and in the grip of corrupt politicians.
“Altered” is directed by Finnish filmmaker Timo Vuorensola, best-known for creating the “Iron Sky” franchise and who most recently directed “Jeepers Creepers: Reborn” and “97 Minutes,” starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Alec Baldwin.

“Is Tamara here?” In May of 2008, those three words hung in the air with foreboding menace (along with “because you were home”) as Bryan Bertino’s The Strangers played in theaters and shocked moviegoers like myself with its straightforward approach to home invasion horror and random violence. Now, 16 years later, the masked murderers now known as Pin-Up Girl, Dollface, and Scarecrow are back on the big screen in The Strangers – Chapter 1, the first film in a new trilogy and the third movie overall in the franchise (the most recent being 2018’s The Strangers: Prey at Night). More of a relaunched expansion of the franchise rather than a full-on remake of the original movie, The Strangers – Chapter 1 still retreads a lot of the first film’s frights, but it does so effectively while weaving in its own intriguing story threads, delivering a promising start to a new trilogy of terror...

Rebooting and expanding upon Bryan Bertino’s chilling 2008 horror film in a brand new trilogy, all installments already shot as part of one continuous, overarching story, makes for one of the more ambitious horror endeavors as of late. It also means that The Strangers: Chapter 1 is only the opening act of a three-part saga. Considering it’s the entry most committed to recreating the familiar beats of Bertino’s film, Chapter 1 makes for a tricky-to-gauge, overly familiar introduction to this new expansion.
The Strangers: Chapter 1 introduces happy couple Maya (Madelaine Petsch) and Ryan (Froy Gutierrez) on their way to starting a new life together in the Pacific Northwest. Car troubles leave them stranded in the quirky small town of Venus, Oregon, where they’re forced to stay the night in a cozy but remote cabin in the woods.

Renny Harlin’s The Strangers: Chapter 1 begins so rotely that it feels like a parody of every bad backwoods horror movie made in the last 50 years. An upwardly mobile young couple, Maya (Madelaine Petsch) and Ryan (Froy Gutierrez), are traveling cross-country to Portland for a job interview that Maya has lined up when they decide to make a pit stop for food. Rather than hit the nearest roadside McDonalds, they veer way off their route toward a diner in the tiny town of Venus, Oregon. And wouldn’t you know it, Maya and Ryan’s car breaks down, and since their cell service is spotty, they’re forced to spend the night in Venus. All the while, the town’s largely unwelcoming residents glare at them and mumble about “city folk.”

Out this week is The Strangers: Chapter 1, the first installment of a new reboot trilogy from director Renny Harlin (A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Master, Deep Blue Sea). While Harlin previously detailed fresh plans for the overarching trilogy, Chapter 1 first aims to recreate the visceral terror of Bryan Bertino’s original film.
It also lays the groundwork for what’s ahead, introducing the peculiar small town of Venus, Oregon.
Bloody Disgusting spoke with Harlin, producer Courtney Solomon, and executive producer/star Madelaine Petsch (“Riverdale”) about the seeds planted for Chapters 2 and 3 within The Strangers: Chapter 1 ahead of its release in theaters this Friday, May 17, 2024.
Based on the original 2008 cult horror franchise, the project features Petsch as Maya, who drives cross-country with her longtime boyfriend, Ryan (Froy Gutierrez), to begin a new life in the Pacific Northwest. When their car breaks down in Venus, Oregon, they’re forced to...

Thirty years ago, Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction” had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, and cinema was never the same. Tarantino’s 1994 epic-crime-pretzel-meets-pop-monologue masterpiece smashed open one door after another, and an inevitable result is that we saw a great many movies in the ’90s that were Tarantino knockoffs — underworld capers of baroque violence and exuberant scuzz, movies that not only bent the dirty hedonism of film noir into new shapes but did it with a special brand of self-consciousness, a “Look at what we’re up to!” effrontery.
That attitude became part of the landscape, though you could also say that after a while, as a literal genre, the Tarantino knockoff faded away. But “The Last Stop in Yuma County,” a real-time, single-location crime thriller set at a gas-food-lodging stop in sunbaked Arizona, is what you might call an exercise in Tarantino knockoff nostalgia. It’s a lean,...

It’s easy to see why writer/director Francis Galluppi is already set to helm a new Evil Dead movie in the wake of his feature debut, The Last Stop in Yuma County. There’s a savage sense of humor and mean streak to Galluppi’s tense, dusty neo-noir western, even as it escalates the pressure cooker scenario. It helps that the film’s charismatic ensemble cast is filled with horror stalwarts, one that Galluppi fearlessly culls through with raucous glee, making for an insanely fun single-location thriller.

Francis Galluppi’s tense and darkly funny The Last Stop in Yuma County begins with an unnamed traveling knife salesman (Jim Cummings) rolling up at the titular Arizona rest stop, looking to fill his tank. The place is nothing more than a couple of gas pumps, a tiny motel, and an old-school diner, complete with red leather booths and an infinite supply of strong black coffee. Despite the locale’s humble appearance, it’s about to become the site of a thrilling showdown that finds a fascinating mix of misfit characters caught in the crossfire.
The attendant, Vernon (Faizon Love), gives our protagonist the bad news first: They don’t have a drop of gas left to sell and the next stop isn’t for a hundred miles. There’s no way the salesman’s car will make it that far, so he’s stuck here until the next delivery arrives.

Review: Having the same style as a famous filmmaker can be both an advantage and disadvantage. In many ways, The Last Stop In Yuma County reminded me of Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. It’s coming together of many stories and a rewatch giving so much context to every little event meant a certain level of skill. Sure, it may look like No Country For Old Men (and even feature a bit part with Gene Jones) but it’s very much its own film. In the 1990s and 2000s, May (and specifically Memorial Day) typically marked the beginning of Summer Movie Season. Multiplexes nationwide were packed to the emergency exits with big names, big explosions and (presumably) big box office. The film industry has changed since then, obviously, and summer no longer packs the same high-octane punch that it once did. But in this evolution, release schedule space has opened up for a stellar month of Don’t-Miss Indies titles.

The Night King from Game of Thrones
In a podcast interview, director Miguel Sapochnik, known for directing key episodes like Hardhome, Battle of the Bastards, talked about the expansive approach of The Long Night. And that revelation came as a surprise, especially considering the scale of the episode’s structural design.

Speaking about the role of the Night King, Sapochnik revealed that the leader of the White Walkers was originally intended to play a more prominent role in The Long Night.

One of the oldest horror tropes in the book, the old, dusty, unfinished basement/crawl space setting has provided a cornucopia of stories about the universal fear of what lurks in the darkest and least-coziest corners of our homes. Yet, in Wes Craven’s 1991 lesser mainstream, still beloved cult favorite The People Under the Stairs, the what’s-hiding-in-the-basement angle is reversed and subverted, as the real monsters are not the othered hiding in the basement, and the home invaders are the heroes. The retired Rms Queen Mary docked in Long Beach, California is considered one of the most haunted locations in the world — which only somewhat shines through in Gary Shore’s Haunting of the Queen Mary. Any wishes to relive Dark Castle Entertainment levels of production design in Ghost Ship won’t be fulfilled, but that said, Haunting of the Queen Mary is more successful than its brushed-under-the-rug release undersells. Shore and co-writer Tom Vaughan channel the Queen Mary’s grave history for a supernatural infestation that spans decades, complete with atmospheric haunts akin to what’s accomplished in remakes of Thir13en Ghosts or House on Haunted Hill. Proper spookiness prevails, even though the over two-hour length gunks up the film’s gears with subplots that slow momentum.
Alice Eve stars as Anne Calder, who pitches Queen Mary’s Captain Bittner (Dorian Lough) on a virtual 3D tour experience to resurrect the ship’s reputation.
