The "Mission: Impossible" franchise is a revolving door. Countless characters appear in one movie and then vanish without a trace, let alone a name-drop, from the next one. The only anchors from the beginning to the present are Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt and Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell.
These hi-and-byes happened behind the camera too. From the first 1996 "Mission: Impossible" up to 2015's "Mission: Impossible -- Rogue Nation," each film had a different director. This was what kept the franchise fresh even though the scripts were formulaic (Ethan's framed for treason by the real mole in every other movie). Each director had a different style and so told the story in a different way.
Brian De Palma's original "Mission: Impossible" had the most low-key set pieces but still had his usual boiling suspense; take the scene where Ethan is accused of being a mole by his handler Kittridge...

The Last Starfighter is a fight science-fiction adventure that may prove a summer tonic to young viewers whose heads swirl with notions of alien planets, forces and intergalactic warriors. “Mank” got a big boost in its Oscar bid for Best Production Design with a win on April 10 at the Art Directors Guild Awards. It prevailed in the period design race over two of its Oscar rivals — “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “News of the World” — plus “Mulan” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”
Its closest Oscar competition could be “Tenet,” which won the fantasy prize at the Adg Awards on Saturday; the fifth Oscar nominee, “The Father,” was not in contention here.
The other Adg winners were the contemporary film “Da 5 Bloods” and the animated film “Soul.”
The Adg Awards were bestowed during a virtual ceremony on April 10. Ryan Murphy was feted with the Cinematic Imagery Award.

David Fincher’s “Mank,” Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet,” Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods,” and Pete Docter’s “Soul” were the big film winners at the 25th annual Art Directors Guild Awards Saturday evening, taking production design honors for period, fantasy, contemporary, and animated feature, respectively. Additionally, “The Mandalorian,” “Ozark,” and “The Queen’s Gambit” were among the TV winners at the ceremony, which bodes well for “The Mandalorian” and “The Queen’s Gambit’s” Emmy prospects in the craft category.
The annual awards fete the finest production design in movies, TV, commercials, music videos, and animated features in 12 categories.
The monochromatic “Mank” is the only film that took home an Adg award that is competing for Best Picture. Pixar’s “Soul” is the favorite for Best Animated Feature. Other Adg nominees included Oscar hopefuls “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”

David Fincher’s “Mank” takes audiences back into 1930s Hollywood, a black and white world where the screenplay for “Citizen Kane” comes together. In Disney’s “Mulan,” audiences are transported to the Imperial City for the live-action heroine tale based on Chinese folklore. George C. Wolfe’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” hones in on a recording session one hot summer’s day in Chicago 1927. And Christopher Nolan experiments with time-inversion in the globetrotting action thriller “Tenet.”
There was an abundance of real-world locations utilized by the contenders for production design.
For “Mank,” production designer Donald Graham Burt and Fincher spent months tracking down locations around Los Angeles that could stand in for Hearst Castle since filming isn’t allowed on the actual estate. In the end, the Huntington Library and Gardens; in South Pasadena, sites in Malibu and soundstages were all carefully decorated to give the feel of Hearst Castle,...

As is the case with most below-the-line Oscar categories, bigger equals better when it comes to Best Production Design. The more lavish the sets, the more accurate the period detail, the more extravagant the designs, the more likely your film will win an Academy Award. Formerly known as Best Art Direction/Set Decoration, this prize goes to the production designer and set decorator, leaving the poor art directors on the outside looking in; perhaps that accounts for the title change. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscar predictions for Best Production Design.)
Like Best Costume Design, this award rarely corresponds with Best Picture. Before “The Shape of Water” prevailed in both categories in 2018, the last to line-up was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2004. Often, the winner of this race hasn’t even been nominated for the top prize, as was the case with “Memoirs of a Geisha...

The Art Directors Guild announced the nominations for the 25th Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards on Thursday, honoring the finest production design in theatrical motion pictures, television, commercials, music videos, and animation features.
Among the nominees for film are Oscar hopefuls “Mank,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” with TV accolades including “The Mandalorian,” “The Queen’s Gambit,” and “What We Do in the Shadows.”
Netflix was the big winner grabbing seven Adg nominations, including three period dramas; one fantasy film (George Clooney’s “The Midnight Sky”); and three contemporary films.
Also making the cut were Christopher Nolan’s time-inversion spy thriller, “Tenet” (production designed by five-time Oscar nominee Nathan Crowley), and two surprises: Emerald Fennell’s Oscar buzzy revenge black comedy, “Promising Young Woman,” which scored a contemporary Adg nomination, and Matteo Garron’s period “Pinocchio” Gothic re-imagining, which scored for period.

On February 25 the Art Directors Guild announced the nominees for its 25th annual awards, which will be handed out on April 10. These kudos have a stellar record at previewing the Academy Awards. Over the first 24 years of these prizes, the eventual Oscar winner for Best Production Design has always numbered among the Adg nominees in the various categories.
According to our expert predictions, period film contender “Mank” is the clear frontrunner to win the Oscar for Best Production Design. We expect that three of its rival in that race at the Adg — “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “News of the World” and “Mulan” — will also contend at the Oscars. The fifth Academy Awards nominee is expected to be “Tenet,” which vies in the fantasy film race at the Art Director Guild Awards.

George Clooney’s The Midnight Sky, adapted by Mark L Smith from the novel Good Morning, Midnight by Lily Brooks-Dalton, looks (production design by Jim Bissell) and sounds great (score by Alexandre Desplat). The year is 2049, the same as Ridley Scott’s second Blade Runner, to all appearances a vintage of choice for post-apocalyptic movies. Albeit, for the same reason, not so healthy a year for Earth. In outer space, there is Commander Adewole (David Oyelowo) and his crew, pilot Mitchell (Kyle Chandler), radar expert Sully (Felicity Jones), navigation specialist Sanchez (Demián Bichir), and flight engineer Maya (Tiffany Boone) on the spaceship Aether, on its way back from their two-year mission surveying K23, a moon of Jupiter.

George Clooney’s “The Midnight Sky” also stars Felicity Jones, David Oyelowo, Kyle Chandler and Demián Bichir, but Clooney’s right-hand man in the film is a little girl, newcomer Caoilinn Springall. The Netflix drama, which premieres Wednesday, marks the feature film debut of the 8-year-old, who was the last person to audition among “hundreds” of girls, Clooney tells Gold Derby in a joint interview with Springall (watch above).
“She walked in and it felt immediately like Caoilinn was the right one,” the two-time Oscar winner shares. “There are things that are tricky to do as an actor — not just young actors, any actor — which is it’s hard to be afraid, to be scared. So we did some improvising and stuff like that, and Caoilinn did a great job. And I called her up and asked her if she wanted to do it.”

Before production designers can create the worlds for characters and audiences to get lost in, they first have to do research, which all four of our Meet the Experts: Film Production Design panelists — Gae Buckley (“I’m Your Woman”), Jim Bissell (“The Midnight Sky”), Jeremy Woodward (“Sound of Metal”) and Shane Valentino (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”) — agree is their favorite part of the process.
“You immerse yourself in so many interesting details and see what comes out of the blue,” Bissell says, before sharing one memorable experience on “E.T.” (1982), when the titular alien was getting sick in the classic film. “We were researching how to isolate the creature and what the procedures and protocol would be, and it was about different levels of cleanliness. We made the final assumption that we were trying to protect E.T. from the environment; we were not trying to protect the environment from E.

“The Midnight Sky” takes place (partially) in space, but it’s not that type of space film, so it couldn’t really look like a typical one either. “It’s not really an action movie, it’s not really a formally structured adventure story. It’s really a meditation. And in that sense, the look is much different,” Jim Bissell tells Gold Derby during our Meet the Experts: Film Production Design panel (watch above).

Netflix has just released the trailer for its new film “The Midnight Sky” directed by and starring George Clooney. The sci-fi drama was adapted by “The Revenant” co-writer Mark L. Smith from the acclaimed Lily-Brooks Dalton novel “Good Morning, Midnight.” Watch the first trailer for “The Midnight Sky” above. This red-hot Oscar contender will be in select theaters in early December and is set to start streaming on the 23rd of that month.
In “The Midnight Sky, which is set in a post-apocalyptic future, Clooney plays scientist Augustine Lofthouse. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors will meet early Saturday to select their choices for the 11th annual Governors Awards. The special meeting is three months earlier than the usual post-Telluride Labor Day weekend date because the Academy — along with the rest of its accelerated calendar — has moved up the date for the Governors Awards from November 16 to Sunday, October 27. The nearly three-week jump backward reflects a similar shift for the February 9, 2020 Oscars.
The Governors’ Ball is a non-televised awards program that always draws a sizable contingent of Oscar contenders to the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood and Highland to celebrate the honorary Oscar winners as well as the occasional Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and Irving J. Thalberg Memorial Awards.
The changed date comes partly because outgoing AMPAS president John Bailey (the board will elect his successor in August) wanted a hand in the selection.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors will meet early Saturday to select their choices for the 11th annual Governors Awards. Sophisticated even as it mocks the pretentiousness and inflated self-importance of those who profit from creative endeavors, Dan Gilroy’s “Velvet Buzzsaw,” which premiered Sunday at Sundance on its way to Netflix, is a deliciously vicious satire unafraid to use campy gore to assert its commentary on commodified art.
An animated title sequence crafted to resemble moving oil paintings, perhaps a nod to what’s to come later, gives way to our first encounter with Morf Vandewalt (a fabulously wild Jake Gyllenhaal), a decisively flamboyant art critic whose opinions are weighted in gold. God-like power has been attributed to his reviews: his raves can increase the value of pieces, and he can ravage entire careers when vitriolic.
Simultaneously loathed and revered, Morf has the ear both of prominent art dealer Rhodora Haze (Rene Russo) and Gretchen (Toni Collette), an La art curator with intentions to dabble in the market herself.

Many of today’s movies are shaped as much by visual effects as by physical design. It’s a development that has driven some production designers to stay involved in a production well beyond the shooting stage — even without pay — so that they can provide input on the effects that form a film’s final look.
On big movies especially, VFX helps create entire worlds — bringing extinct dinosaurs to life in “Jurassic Park” and building the nation of Wakanda in “Black Panther.” Improvements in effects technology have allowed writers and directors to reproduce whatever they visualize, which might impact the aesthetics production designers work so hard to create.
The growing imprint of visual effects on the DNA of movies has resulted in a period of adjustment for production designers surprised by final cuts of films that don’t have the look they originally conceived.
This can lead to difficult decisions — and delicate situations.

Tackling a period project that feels true to life, rather than an imitation of the past, is no easy feat for any production designer—but it doesn’t hurt to have lived through the period being depicted. Such was the case for Oscar-nominated production designer Jim Bissell, who has spent much of his career depicting different epochs of the American experience. Breaking out with Steven Spielberg’s E.T., Bissell sees an irony in the fact that at 66 years of age, he’s found…...

Ah, awards season; are we back at that special time of year already? As 2017 starts to wrap up, the major studios are getting their prestige titles prepped and ready to go, hoping to lure in both strong box office and, more importantly, critical/awards recognition. But there’s always a few titles that fall below expectations. And then there are the titles that really fall below expectations. One that’s already hit that point is Suburbicon – directed by George Clooney, primarily written by the Coen Brothers and starring Matt Damon, Julianne Moore and Oscar Isaac – and its disappointments are especially staggering. But what is it in this specific film that betrays such a sharp concept?
As a colorful film strip, featuring one of composer Alexandre Desplat’s manipulatively playful contributions that further establishes him as one of music’s best living composers, that opens the film declares, the titular Suburbicon,...

This year's Academy Board of Governors race was more intense than usual. Women directors Kimberly Pierce and Ava DuVernay were trying to unseat incumbent veteran Michael Mann, but he kept his seat, while documentarian Rory Kennedy, the youngest daughter of the late Robert Kennedy, was elected to the Board for the first time, one of four new governors. The others are Lois Burwell, Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch; Michael Giacchino, Music Branch; and Daryn Okada, Cinematographers Branch. Yet three more women are on the board than last year, 17 to 14. A runoff election is required for the Writers Branch, as Larry Karaszewski and Billy Ray tied. Voting for the runoff election via online and paper ballots will begin Thursday, July 16, and end Wednesday, July 22. The Academy last held a runoff election in 2009 for the Directors Branch. Incumbent governors reelected to the Board include Jim Bissell, Designers Branch; Tom Hanks, Actors Branch...

The Art Directors Guild has announced nominees for the group's 19th annual awards, and films that have come on strong as of late like "American Sniper" and "Nightcrawler" were in the mix along notable extravagant displays in the period and fantasy categories. However, there were a few missing pieces. In the fantasy arena, both "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" and "Maleficent" came up short, while "Exodus: Gods and Kings" missed in the period department. The most shocking snub might be "Mr. Turner's" in that field, however. (And it would have been great to see "Snowpiercer" get some love here, but, alas.) As a reminder, the Guild implemented a new rule this season. Period films must now have the majority of sets and locations designed to portray a time period at least 20 years prior to the present awards year. Contemporary films, therefore, must have the majority of...
