Exclusive: Sarah Greene is “excited” to be at the center of a high-stakes “love triangle” involving James McArdle and Emun Elliott in Sexy Beast, the Paramount+ prequel to director Jonathan Glazer’s 2000 classic.
Greene tells me she is a great admirer of Amanda Redman’s sultry performance as former adult actress Deedee Harrison – the role that holds a place in the annals of gangster movie history – and the part that the Cork-born Normal People star takes on in the Sexy Beast drama that premieres on Paramount+ this Thursday, January 25.
Greene watched the movie “over and over again and just studied her through line. And she’s very still, she doesn’t say a whole lot.”
We chat just as the actress is in the midst of shooting the second season of Bad Sisters with her Garvey siblings played by Sharon Horgan, Anne-Marie Duff, Eva Birthistle and Eve Hewson. “We were all like,...

While Christmas tends to be the default setting for winter horror, 2008’s The Children makes a good argument for terror around the New Year. Many folks would expect leisure and fun after a busy Christmas. However, the chance for relaxation is out of the question in Tom Shankland’s movie. Something terrible has suddenly happened to the kids, and something even worse awaits their parents.
Spending New Year’s Eve with the ‘rents and their relatives is undesirable for most teenagers, but Casey (Hannah Tointon) will have definitely wished for more boring family time after her younger siblings and cousins turn on her and every other grownup nearby. No one past the age of puberty is safe here. As Casey and her closest kin gather at a remote house in the country — a decision that always proves to be as unwise as it is clichéd — The Children steadily reveals its unusual threat.

This story about Dearbhla Walsh and “Bad Sisters” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama and Limited Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
The first time director Dearbhla Walsh met Sharon Horgan, it was to discuss Walsh directing the first episode of Horgan’s horror-comedy series “Shining Vale.” But in that conversation, the comic actress and writer also mentioned a different project that really piqued Walsh’s interest.
“She said, ‘I have this other show that I think you’d love,’” Walsh said. “‘It’s about five Irish sisters who plot to murder their brother-in-law.’ And I said, ‘You had me at five Irish sisters, which means we have to shoot in Ireland. And murdering their brother-in-law — what’s not to love?’”

Many shows are about one thing in particular, with a number of subplots serving to support the main theme. While in some ways that is the case with the Apple TV+ drama “Bad Sisters,” there’s so much going on at any one given time that it’s almost hard to keep track of what started it all in the first place. That would be, of course, the death of The Prick (Claes Bang), also known as Jp, the manipulative, abusive husband of Grace (Anne-Marie Duff), and the show’s central mystery: did Grace’s four sisters kill him, and, if so, how did they do it?
This show moves seamlessly between multiple timelines, chronicling the inciting incident for each of the sisters that made them hate Jp, their multiple efforts to concoct a way to cleverly dispose of him, and the aftermath when a pair of insurance investigator brothers...

By the end of 2022, Eve Hewson was already having a very good year by virtue of the fact that she was one of the stars of Sharon Horgan’s “Bad Sisters,” a very serious and very funny series about a group of four Dublin sisters who scheme to kill the man who is abusing their fifth sister. Then the “Nepo Babies” furor erupted after a December article in New York magazine, and Hewson — whose father is Paul Hewson, aka U2’s Bono — dropped a couple of funny tweets and came across as one of the few who handled it all with wit and perspective.
Then came January 2023, when the 31-year-old Irish actress headed to the Sundance Film Festival with “Flora and Son,” a delightful and touching musical drama from “Once” director John Carney. Playing Flora, a single mother who starts taking guitar lessons as a way to connect with her sullen son,...

One of Sharon Horgan’s goals in an already illustrious career as a showrunner and actor (including beloved British series such as “Pulling” and “Catastrophe”) was to create more varied, interesting roles for women. AppleTV+’s “Bad Sisters” allowed her the chance to do it five times over, in a twisty, addictive yarn about siblings who band together in the aftermath of a creep husband’s mysterious demise. (He’s not called “The Prick” in the show for nothing.)

First, congratulations on making probably the funniest drama series of all time. The narrative genre lines really do seem to be blurring on TV, don’t they?

During a wide-ranging conversation at the Banff World Media Festival, award-winning multihyphenate Sharon Horgan discussed her lauded series Bad Sisters and the ongoing WGA strike.
Horgan, who was on hand at Banff to receive the Award of Excellence, sat down with The Hollywood Reporter editorial director Nekesa Mumbi Moody to talk about the audience and critical reaction to the Apple TV+ show, which has been ordered for a second season. “You really don’t know,” said Horgan when asked if the response to the show was expected. “In this case, [we’re] making a show about a woman in a domestic abuse situation, but we’re doing really broad comedy around that. You think, ‘Are people going to be really offended, or are we going to be able to strike the right tone?'”

If your sister was being abused by her husband, what would you do? For Bad Sisters‘ Garvey siblings, the answer was simple. But killing their brother-in-law proved more difficult than they expected, not that they ever thought it’d be a walk in the park. Eve Hewson plays the youngest of the five sisters, Becka Garvey. The women were raised by eldest sister Eva after the deaths of their parents years prior. Becka is the first to volunteer to kill J.P. (Claes Bang), but through two timelines and many failed murder attempts, J.P.’s killer remains a mystery until the final episode. The Apple TV+ dark comedy will be back for Season 2. Here, Hewson shares how she, Horgan, Anne-Marie Duff (Grace), Eva Birthistle (Ursula), and Sarah Greene (Bibi) made the Garvey sisters’ closeness so believable, what to expect in Season 2, and why she feels Becka was the role...

Ted Lasso may have as many Emmys as there are AFC Richmond players in a match, but almost four years into the life of Apple TV+, it’s far from the only reason to visit the streamer. Since its launch in 2019, Apple has paid out for starry collaborations with big names in Hollywood both behind and in front of the camera, many of which have now – creatively at least – paid off.
It hasn’t been a straight ascent, but by sticking with the majority of their original shows over multiple season renewals rather than the slash ‘n’ burn approach elsewhere, Apple TV+ has established a healthy slate of acclaimed originals. There’s weird horror Servant, hard sci-fi Foundation, eerie drama Severance, spy thriller Slow Horses, plus real-life dramatisations, and a lot of very decent comedy. We pick our recommendations below.

Seven Kings Must Die concludes the story of Uhtred Ragnarsson, a decades-long frenemy of the English crown since the days of King Alfred the Great. It’s largely adapted from Bernard Cornwell’s final instalment in his Saxon Stories books, War Lord, along with elements of the two previous novels, and tracks the contested succession to the royal throne following the death of King Edward.
A significant time jump has taken place since the final moments of The Last Kingdom season five, during which Aelswith, Hild and Eadith have all passed or moved away. A core of male characters remains though, including Uhtred, Finan, Sihtric, Father Pyrlig and Aldhelm. They’re joined by brand new characters, as below.
Laurie Davidson as Ingilmundr
The biggest addition to The Last Kingdom’s regular cast is Aethelstan’s new trusted advisor, Ingilmundr, a Danish-born Christian who shows a powerful influence over King Edward’s successor.

“It’s just walking a bit of a tightrope, really, but I feel like we were sort of doing that throughout because we had to balance comedy with drama — like really silly, stupid comedy with really brutal drama,” explains Sharon Horgan about the challenge of setting the right tone for “Bad Sisters,” the Apple TV+ series she co-created. Eve Hewson, the Irish actress now starring alongside Sharon Horgan on the dark Apple TV+ comedy Bad Sisters, will be saluted at the 17th annual Oscar Wilde Awards in March, it was announced Monday.
Hewson will receive the Wilde Card Award, which event organizer Trina Vargo, president of the US-Ireland Alliance, notes is used “to bring attention to rising talent who may not yet be a household name, but who we expect will be.” The first such honor was presented in 2010 to Saoirse Ronan.
The daughter of U2 frontman Bono, Hewson can next be seen starring opposite Joseph Gordon-Levitt in John Carney’s Flora and Son, which will premiere Sunday at the Sundance Film Festival.
Fellow Irish actresses Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin) and Jessie Buckley (Women Talking) also will be feted March 9 at J.J. Abrams and Katie McGrath’s Bad Robot production company in Santa Monica.

(Welcome to Scariest Scene Ever, a column dedicated to the most pulse-pounding moments in horror with your tour guides, horror experts Chris Evangelista and Matt Donato. In this edition, Matt makes a case against pregnancy in "The Children.")
Tom Shankland's kinderhorror meanie "The Children" isn't an actual reason to avoid childbirth. That's a joke. Although, I wouldn't recommend the film to newfound parents exploring the wonders of parenting. What occurs is along the lines of "Who Can Kill a Child?" and its remake "Come Out and Play," or "Children of the Corn," where innocence is a coverup for murderous intent. Doubly dreary around the holidays since a majority of Xmas traditions point towards making youngins happy.
"The Children" ranks high atop the list of anti-holiday horror movies. Instead of spending Christmas and New Year's partying or unwrapping presents, kiddies turn into killers who prey upon adults. Children couldn't be capable of such atrocious crimes,...

Jumping in a freezing cold body of water will definitely send adrenaline through your system, and if you’re making a TV show, it could also help inspire a great idea — like where to shoot a significant scene. That’s the story behind a key set location in the Apple TV+ series “Bad Sisters,” creator Sharon Horgan revealed in the latest installment of TheWrap’s video series “How I Did It,” which is sponsored by Apple TV+.
“Being in a swimsuit and then freezing your t–ts off … I thought, ‘Why? Why did I do it?” Horgan, the creator, writer, executive producer and lead actress in “Bad Sisters,” said of deciding to film the series in Dublin Bay, an inlet of the Irish Seas on the east coast of Ireland.

Apple TV+ has announced a season two renewal for “Bad Sisters,” the global hit, darkly comedic murder mystery series from Emmy Award nominee and BAFTA Award-winning executive producer and star Sharon Horgan. “If you’d have told me three years ago that I’d be making a series about five murderous sisters chasing a man around Ireland trying to kill him I’d have said; yeah, that sounds about right. The response to our show had been beyond what we could have hoped for. It gave us the opportunity to shine a light on stories that don’t always get such a global platform. I look forward to getting chilly in the Irish Sea one more time.” Since its global premiere, “Bad Sisters” has been hailed as “one of the year’s best shows,” “a wickedly funny, genuinely poignant” dramedy, and “this year’s most vicious comic treat.” As each...

“Bad Sisters,” the Apple TV+ dark comedy series created by and starring Sharon Horgan, has been renewed for Season 2, the streamer announced. The news comes less than a month after its 10-episode first season concluded on October 14.
Based on the 2012 Flemish TV series “Clan,” “Bad Sisters” stars Horgan as Eva Garvey, the eldest of five sisters, who ends up in the middle of a life insurance investigation when her brother-in-law John Paul (Claes Bang) dies under uncertain circumstances. As overzealous insurance agent Thomas (Brian Gleeson) tries to prove Eva and her sisters’ involvement in the death, the show flips from the weeks following his funeral to the weeks leading up to his death, when Eva plotted to murder John Paul with Ursula (Eva Birthistle), Bibi (Sarah Greene), and Becka (Eve Hewson) in revenge for his abusive treatment of their sister Grace (Anne Marie-Duff).

It’s the news “Bad Sisters” fans have been hoping for: the limited series has been commissioned for a second season, meaning the murderous Garvey sisters are set to grace our screens once more.
Apple TV+ and executive producer and star Sharon Horgan confirmed the second season order on Tuesday (Nov. 8), although no other info – including potential release date, cast or plot details – has been revealed.

Apple TV+ will spend more time with its group of Bad Sisters.
The tech behemoth’s streaming service has ordered a second season of its dark comedy/murder mystery Bad Sisters, co-created by and starring Sharon Horgan. The renewal comes comes a few weeks after the conclusion of the 10-episode first season, which has earned mostly positive reviews from critics (The Hollywood Reporter’s Angie Han called it “never boring” but also “slightly less than the sum of its parts”). Apple TV+ doesn’t self-report any viewing data, and the show did not break into Nielsen’s streaming top 10 during its run.

“Bad Sisters” is a sinister mystery from the beginning. In the opening scene we see Grace (Anne-Marie Duff) chopping onions as she weeps. But is she crying because of the onions, or the dead husband parked in her living room, wearing pajamas and sporting an erection she’ll have to hide from guests arriving for his funeral? That husband’s name is John Paul (Claes Bang) and he’s introduced to us as “The Prick.” He’s a jerk and Grace and her four sisters have reason to kill him, hence the plot of this devilishly fun family drama on Apple TV+.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for the Bad Sisters finale.] In Bad Sisters, Earl (J.P.) had to die. The Apple TV+ dark comedy came to a close October 14, finally revealing who killed Gracie’s husband, J.P., in the end. And while all of the Garvey sisters need therapy after the months they’ve had, the finale ended on a peaceful note with all five of the sisters swimming together again. An adaptation of the Belgian series Clan, Sharon Horgan stars as eldest sister Eva Garvey. Her four sisters are Anne-Marie Duff as Gracie, Eve Hewson as Becka, Sarah Greene as Bibi, and Eva Birthistle as Ursula. When J.P. (Claes Bang) abuses Gracie and everyone else in their sphere, the tight-knit Garvey sisters plot to kill him. We know from the pilot that someone was successful on that front, but the show spends all 10 episodes teasing who did it and how, telling the tale from...

Will the Bad Sisters ever learn?
Bad Sisters Season 1 Episode 4 premieres Friday on Apple TV+. TV Fanatic has an exclusive first look at what's ahead.
The sisters are still grappling with all the big events that have transpired so far, and there's plenty more on the horizon.
In the clip, the sisters know that Becka is too hopeful to heed their warning about John Paul.
Becka's relationship with John Paul hasn't been as strained as that of her sisters, and with his manipulation increasing, it's unclear when the other shoe will drop.
However, there are only so many times her siblings can try to get through to her.
Viewers have witnessed the drama that's unfolded so far and, of course, how awful John Paul is.
Bad Sisters has managed to infuse humor into an otherwise dark subject matter, which continues in the clip at the bottom of the page.

Welcome to my bed,” Eve Hewson says by way of hello, her back arched into a preposterous abundance of cloud-white pillows. The 31-year-old actor simply cannot resist a good line. When I ask her about her boss, Catastrophe star Sharon Horgan, Hewson doesn’t hesitate: “Do you have a girl crush on her? Because I do.” And when I ask if anyone happened to misbehave at the flashy premiere party for their new series about a scheming clan of Irish sisters? “Yeah!” A pause. “Me.”
Hewson does look alluringly dishevelled over Zoom. She’s chicly/slovenly attired in a fluffy hotel robe, enormous silver hoops, and yesterday’s blowout. She’s also lounging exactly how you’d think a movie star would lounge the morning after a debauched night out – a Hollywood fantasy of a hangover. “Tits and hoops,” she calls the off-duty uniform.
In reality, Hewson just doesn’t have any clothes.

The thing that makes “Bad Sisters” so tricky is that the Garvey family alone could fuel multiple seasons. The collection of sisters at the heart of the newest Apple TV+ drama are all distinct women with their own lives, bound by more than just hatred for a loathsome man.
The opening hour of “Bad Sisters” introduces us to them all in clear, efficient fashion. There’s Eva (Sharon Horgan), the confident businesswoman who’s served as the mother figure to the rest since the death of their parents. Ursula (Eva Birthistle) is raising her own kids while juggling a hospital job and various other outside interests. Though many of them are resolute and inclined toward defending the group, Bibi (Sarah Greene) is the Garvey sister who most follows both those instincts. Becka (Eve Hewson) is the youngest, with a freewheeling life only partly taken up by her massage practice.

If Sharon Horgan’s attached to a show, there’s a more than decent chance that it’ll be a spiky comedy tinged with the tragedy of everyday indignities. From “Catastrophe” to “Motherland” to “Shining Vale,” Horgan’s cornered an enviable market that almost always delivers, especially when it comes to the ins and outs of being a smart woman in an increasingly dumb world. “Bad Sisters” — debuting Aug. 19 on Apple TV+ — is happily no exception.
From Horgan, Brett Baer and Dave Finkel, “Bad Sisters” takes the premise of the Belgian series “Clan” and twists it into a more Irish shape. Horgan stars as Eva, the eldest of five sisters who took on a more maternal role after both their parents died in a car crash. Joining her are Eva Birthistle (“The Last Kingdom”) as Ursula, a working mother at the end of her rope; Sarah Greene (“Normal People”) as Bibi,...

John-Paul Williams is a bad, bad husband. He’s belittling, controlling, physically imposing. He exclusively calls his wife “mammy”, even in front of company. In other words, he has to go. Mercifully, when we first meet him in the new Dublin whodunnit Bad Sisters, he’s already dead – a fact that doesn’t keep John-Paul, played with cultivated smugness by Danish actor Claes Bang, from posthumously threatening to tear his family apart.

Bad Sisters premieres Friday, August 19, on Apple TV+.
TV Fanatic has an exclusive first look at the series premiere, in which Grace (Anne-Marie Duff) is missing from the annual Christmas swim.
The reason? She's spending time with her husband, John Paul (Claes Bang).
In the clip, we hear sisters Ursula (Eva Birthistle), Bibi (Sarah Greene), Becka (Eve Hewson), and Eva (Sharon Horgan) speak about their deeply rooted disdain for John Paul.
Eva concedes that they've lost Grace, and missing the Christmas swim will be the beginning of the end for their relationship with her.
The conversation then takes a twist with the sisters speaking about how they could kill him.
It's a dark subject matter, but the humorous script keeps it from being too dark.
At its core, the series is about these women who unite with one common goal.
Thankfully, John Paul is awful, and watching his downfall will be a lot of fun.

With Bad Sisters, Sharon Horgan has adapted a Belgian series for Apple TV+ about the five Garvey sisters and the man who tears their world apart and the Garveys' attempts to kill him.
It's not an easy show to watch, as that man, John Paul Williams, who is married to Garvey sister, Grace, is evil incarnate.
Thankfully, the show begins with his funeral, and the central mystery isn't whether or not the sisters trying to kill him were successful but how they pulled it off. Watching the pain he inflicts on the Garveys otherwise would be too much to bear. He's that bad.
On Bad Sisters press day, we had the opportunity to chat with Horgan, who created and stars as Eva Garvey, and costars Sarah Greene (Bibi Garvey), Eva Birthistle (Ursula Flynn), Anne-Marie Duff (Grace Williams), and Claes Bang (John Paul Williams).

Bad Sisters is a brilliant new comedy launching on Apple TV+ on the 19th August – and to mark the release of this deliciously dark and twisted Irish comedy, we had the pleasure of speaking to the stars that bring it to life. Below watch our interviews with writer and star Sharon Horgan, alongside Sarah Greene and Eva Birthistle, who play her sisters in the series, as they discuss the daring nature of the show. We also speak to their other on-screen sibling, Anne-Marie Duff, who is paired with the antagonist of the piece, Claes Bang. They speak about Christmas traditions, the film’s, erm, interesting opening scene and Bang tells us how he connects to a character who is such a horrible bastard. Be sure to watch both interviews in their entirety below.

At the center of Apple TV+’s dark comedy-thriller Bad Sisters is the mystery of how John-Paul Williams (Claes Bang), a seemingly respectable husband, father and businessman, really died. Life insurance agents Thomas and Matthew Claffin (Brian Gleeson and Daryl McCormack) suspect foul play, and they’re probably not wrong: As the series quickly establishes, his sisters-in-law were definitely plotting something against Jp, though it’ll apparently take the entire ten-episode season to find out exactly what came to pass.
If the how is in question, though, the why certainly isn’t. Within his first five minutes of screentime, Jp shows himself to be so thoroughly, irredeemably, aggressively awful that the real puzzle might be how no one else got around to killing him first. In one light, this has the advantage of releasing the audience from any ambivalence we might feel rooting for his comeuppance.
