Screen Media has acquired “Best Sellers,” a comedy with Michael Caine and Aubrey Plaza about a pair of misfits that has a literary twist. The deal is for all U.S. rights, and the company plans to release the film theatrically and on-demand in September.
Directed by Lina Roessler (“Little Whispers: The Vow”), “Best Sellers” centers on an ambitious young editor (Plaza) who decides to try to save the flailing publishing house her father left her by going on a book tour with the bitter, hard-drinking author (Caine) who helped establish the company several decades and an ocean of booze ago.
Cary Elwes, Scott Speedman, Ellen Wong and Veronica Ferres co-star in the film. The screenplay, written by Anthony Grieco, won a 2015 Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting award.
“Not since ‘As Good as it Gets’ have we seen such a mismatched pair take to the road,” said Screen Media in a statement.

One of General Hospital‘s great murder mysteries had its roots in the fictional town of Laurelton, and more than 34 years later, I am here to vaguely remember it.
Why? I was tweeting this week about how someone in the real world’s political arena has a habit of “gaslighting” his/her constituents. That made me recall the first time I ever heard the term “gaslight” — when Gh‘s Ginny Webber led Bobbie Spencer to believe that she had killed the abusive Dl Brock, when in fact [Spoiler Alert!] Ginny herself had done the deed, albeit in self-defense. (Watch Judith Chapman’s killer confession here.

Stephen King was once quoted as saying: “I have seen the future of horror… his name is Clive Barker.” The future became a reality when, in 1987, Barker unleashed his directorial debut Hellraiser, launching a hit franchise and creating an instant horror icon in the formidable figure of Pinhead.
Arrow’s beautifully produced Hellraiser: The Scarlet Box, has arguably for the first time, been afforded the prestige it fully deserves. The collection works very nicely in deed, mainly because its focus revolves around creator Clive Barker’s involvement in the franchise. Whilst Barker had a small interest in the fourth instalment Hellraiser IV: Bloodline, it would be the...

A straight to DVD movie starring Djimon Hounsou as an assassin and Kevin Bacon as a gun runner in Thailand directed by Prachya Pinkaew, the director of two of my favorite action films in the last 10 years, Ong Bak and Chocolate? How could I have missed it? Why didn’t it come out in theaters here? Why am I asking so many questions? This is what I was asking the whole time while watching the film. The most important being: Is this a good film?
An American mercenary who is very cautious with his name (Djimon Hounsou) is finishing up a job in Thailand for an employer when he offers him one more job. He asks him to kill the crime lord who abducted, prostituted his daughter and ultimately killed her. He accepts but is wary when a mysterious 14 year old Mae (Jirantanin Pitakporntrakul) comes into his life and gives...

Featuring Sahajak Boonthanakit, Djimon Hounsou, Kevin Bacon, Weeraprawat Wongpuapan
Elephant White, the newest film from Prachya Pinkaew (Ong-bak), is a beautifully shot albeit derivative action yarn with none of the panache exhibited in the director’s previous films.
After his daughter is abducted and then murdered by members of a sex-trafficking syndicate in Thailand, Rajahdan (Sahajak Boonthanakit) hires an imposing mercenary named Church (played by Gladiator’s Djimon Hounsou) to take them out. Church visits an arms dealer called Jimmy the Brit (a slumming Kevin Bacon) and stocks up on hardcore weaponry before heading into Bangkok to shoot some bad guys. After blowing up his targets in fiery action-film fashion he befriends Mae (Jirantanin Pitakporntrakul) a young sex worker who might be a spy from one of the opposing slave-trade syndicates. Church uncovers a far more complicated hierarchy responsible for the death of Rajahdan’s daughter,...

We all remember this director from a title Running Scared, so we’re looking forward to see what Wayne Kramer can do with a crime thriller about 20s and 30s bank robber Charles Arthur Floyd.
This name definitely sounds familiar! Maybe he’s no Robin Hood, but he became known as “Robin Hood of the Cookson Hills,” despite being wanted by the FBI for killing Kansas City police officers.
So, Wayne Kramer will direct the biopic from Kevin Bernhardt’s script with an eye on modernizing the tone of the story. Here’s what he had to say about this project:
“My approach is to bring 21st century style and energy to Kevin Bernhardt’s meticulously researched screenplay without sacrificing the verisimilitude of the period or over-sensationalizing the characters themselves…

Last summer Michael Mann's Public Enemies was a bit of a commercial disappointment with middling reviews, making it somewhat unlikely that anyone else would attempt another early '30s gangster flick again in the near future. And yet, apparently director Wayne Kramer was not put off by the lukewarm response, and has just announced a public enemy project of his own: a crime thriller centering on Charles Arthur Floyd aka Pretty Boy Floyd. Floyd was one of the many bank robbers operating in the Midwest around the same time as Dillinger, and was suspected to be involved in the Kansas City Massacre. He actually appeared briefly in Michael Mann's film as played by Channing Tatum (you may remember him getting shot in the back by Christian Bale). Let's hope they've got someone else in mind for the lead role of this film. Kramer is best known for directing...

Though many crime thrillers are simply slightly different variations on familiar stories about undercover or corrupt cops and the diabolical criminals they pursue, audiences usually can't get enough of them. Recently audiences went back in time with Public Enemies, the period crime thriller about John Dillinger played by Johnny Depp. Now Risky Biz reports that writer/director Wayne Kramer (The Cooler, Running Scared) will bring us the story of another infamous gangster from the past with Pretty Boy Floyd, a crime thriller focusing on Charles Arthur Floyd, a gangster whose crime wave swept across the Midwest in the 20s & 30s. Written by Kevin Bernhardt, the story follows the criminal who became known as "The Robin Hood of the Cookson Hills" as he committed bank robbery, highway robbery and may have been involved in The Kansas City Massacre, a gunfight that resulted in the death of four police officers. While the...

I'm really into the history old school gangsters during the 1920's and 1930's. Unfortunately I thought Michael Mann dropped the ball on Public Enemy, the story of John Diliger. That movie should have been a lot better. Now it looks like another popular 1920's robber is getting a big screen treatment... Pretty Boy Floyed.
It's being reported that Wayne Kramer (The Cooler) has signed on to direct the film from a script written by Kevin Bernhardt.

Remember the first few minutes of Michael Mann’s Public Enemies when Christian Bale chased Channing Tatum through a field? Okay, now imagine that scene as the ending or a scene from another film. That’s pretty much sums up Wayne Kramer’s next project, a Pretty Boy Floyd biopic.
According to the Risky Business story, Kramer will bring a flashy modern sensibility to the story without over sensationalizing the thoroughly researched screenplay by Kevin Bernhardt. In other words, Kramer will try to do a really great Michael Mann impression and make his own version of Public Enemies.
Pretty Boy Floyd will most likely be a film about a bank robber on the run and involved with ladies, law enforcement is the bad guy and our protagonist becomes a folk hero and what not. I assume that we’ve seen this before when it was about another depression era bank robbers turned folk heroes/icons.

The last time we saw him, he was getting gunned down by Christian Bale in Public Enemies, but Pretty Boy Floyd is returning to life for his own feature biopic from Wayne Kramer. Charles Arthur 'Pretty Boy' Floyd hasn't been portrayed in as many movies as some of the most famous real-life gangsters -- he's no Capone -- but he's certainly had his share of turns on the screen. Channing Tatum played him in Public Enemies; Martin Sheen played him on TV; Steve Kanaly played him in Dillinger. (That wasn't him in O Brother, Where Art Thou?, though -- Michael Badalucco played a version of Lester 'Baby Face' Nelson.) Now Wayne Kramer (Running Scared) is looking to direct Pretty Boy Floyd, where the bank robber will get to take center stage for the first time in many years. THR says that Kramer has signed on to the film that Myriad Pictures is making with Kirk D'Amico producing. The film is written by Kevin Bernhardt based on the life of Floyd. David R. Ellis is one busy hombre. The “Snakes on a Plane” and “Final Destination” director recently talked with the gents over at Movie Hole and filled them in on all of his upcoming projects, the most intriguing and “Snakes on a Plane”-esque of which is the incredibly titled “War Monkeys”. I mean, come on, it’s got monkeys — and they’ve been trained in warfare! How could you go wrong with a premise like that? Okay, so there’s plenty of ways to go wrong, but we’re betting Ellis steers the ship. Hopefully. Besides “War Monkeys” (“monkeys with machineguns!”), Ellis has a thriller called “Genesis Code” coming up with “Star Wars” prequel guy Hayden Christensen. Here’s the premise: “Genesis Code”, written by Kevin Bernhardt, tells of a former national security expert (Christensen) who, while investigating the murder of his only sister and her young son, discovers...

Snakes on a Plane, despite having the most literal title description of a movie's contents that I've seen in years, was actually a fun little horror movie. Director David Ellis seems to enjoy bringing out the cheese in cinema. His followup, The Final Destination, was awful though. I barely made it through that installment. The movie would have been much better if it didn't have to rely on the horribly overrated 3D gimmick for cheap thrills. Moviehole spoke with Ellis on some of his future projects: First up is another 3D movie for Ellis, who's last movie, 2009's "The Final Destination", also took advantage of the in-your-face gimmick. "Shark Night is going to be killer and shoots this summer in Shreveport La", Ellis says of a project that's set up over at Incentive. That film, like "Final Destination", lends itself perfectly to 3D, says the filmmaker. "I love the depth...

Returning for another sporadic visit to our cinema screens, Hayden Christensen has signed on to play the lead in David R. Ellis' thriller, The Genesis Code.
The screenplay has been written by Kevin Bernhardt based on John Case's novel of the same name. The story follows former national security expert Joe Lassiter (Christensen), who begins investigating the murder of his sister and her young son and soon discovers that a religious sect called The Shadow of the Cross may be involved. With the help of his sister's friend Ana, they follow the clues to a clinic in the mountains of Italy, where a terrifying secret experiment has been successfully conducted that if revealed would shake the very foundations of the Church.
It all sounds very Da Vinci Code to us, and you know how that adaptation turned out, but Christensen is a likely hero so we'll reserve judgement.
