20 years ago, Saw made an indelible impact on the horror genre. Not only did it usher in the so-called “torture porn” subgenre that would become synonymous with the aughts, but it also launched the career of filmmaker James Wan, who has firmly cemented his place among the masters of horror with follow-ups like The Conjuring and Insidious.
In the two decades since, the lucrative franchise has spawned nine sequels — 2005’s Saw II, 2006’s Saw III, 2007’s Saw IV, 2008’s Saw V, 2009’s Saw VI, 2010’s Saw: The Final Chapter, 2017’s Jigsaw, 2021’s Spiral: From the Book of Saw, and 2023’s Saw X — with a worldwide box office total of over $1 billion.
Despite being often maligned by detractors for its mindless sadism, fans are just as much invested in the series’ soap opera-esque melodrama as the innovative death traps. Formulaic though the general plots may be, the non-linear storyline is deceptively...

Saw X went back to its roots and is considered the best film of the franchise. The latest film saw the return of Tobin Bell as John Kramer aka Jigsaw. The events took place between Saw II and III, and the tenth film managed to recapture the magic that the franchise started nearly 20 years ago. However, it’s not because Tobin Bell has been missing from the series. The concept and appeal of the franchise have grown tired and Saw X should be the final entry in the long-running horror series. The Age Of Torture Porn Is Over The first...

R L Stine’s Goosebumps has been renewed for a second series at Disney+, with a change in format to an anthology show.
R L Stine’s Goosebumps is one of the bestselling book series in history. It is no surprise that it has had myriad screen adaptations over the years.
Perhaps the most fondly remembered is the 1990s television series, which had memorable opening titles in which the shadow of the G in Goosebumps made it’s way through an eerie town while the unsettling theme tune played over it.
Many of the original novels were adapted, and it marked a high point for television horror aimed at young adults, as it was broadcast around the same time as Are You Afraid Of The Dark?, a horror anthology aimed at older teenagers. Several of Stine’s works have made it to the screen, from a trilogy of Fear Street...

It makes sense that one of the most sadistic horror movie franchises of all time was inspired by the process of dealing with the healthcare system. In an interview with The Av Club timed to the release of "Saw 3D," writer and first film star Leigh Whannell spoke about the origins of Jigsaw, explaining that the idea for the killer came to him while he was waiting to get an Mri.
Whannell told the outlet that franchise co-creator James Wan came to him with an idea for the first film's beginning and end, but it was up to Whannell to flesh out the details surrounding the movie's major twist. "Basically the conundrum was, 'Okay, two people are stuck in a room, they've been put there by somebody. Who put them there and why?'" Whannell recalled. The answer came to him when he ended up stuck in a room, too -- but in his case,...

The "Saw" films will continue to slice and dice their way into theaters until morale improves -- or until audiences finally get tired of the über-successful horror franchise. If the universal acclaim and strong box office performance of "Saw X" proved anything, however, it's that a return to its roots was sorely needed. As the eleventh film in the series is scheduled to release later this year, that theme is about to continue in a big way.
We haven't been told much about the cast or even the plot of "Saw XI" since the sequel was first announced back in December of last year, though it's been easy to imagine the creative team picking up on the ongoing prequel storyline almost exactly where they last left off. While the involvement of the man, myth, and legend Tobin Bell remains unclear, we now know that at least one other franchise veteran...

The long-running Saw franchise is headed back to the big screen this Halloween season, with the box office success of last year’s Saw X paving the way for this year’s Saw XI.
Bloody Disgusting can exclusively report this week that Saw X director Kevin Greutert will return to direct the upcoming Saw XI! In addition to Saw X, Greutert directed both Saw VI in 2009 and later Saw: The Final Chapter in 2010, along with the horror movies Jessabelle in 2014 and Jackals more recently in 2017. He also edited Saw I through V and Jigsaw.
This has to be considered very good news for Saw fans, as most felt that Saw X was a much-needed course direction for the franchise, finally bringing it back to the highs of the past. "Some people think of a time in a straight line... they're wrong..." K Street Pictures has revealed an official trailer for an indie psychological thriller titled Altered Reality, from filmmaker / cinematographer Don E. FauntLeRoy. Despite an intriguing cast, this looks as bad as they come. Another spin on a miracle drug that gives special powers, which just reminds me of that Limitless movie. Oliver's life transforms when gifted a not-yet-existing miracle drug. Riches, unscrupulous pacts, and morphing of past & present create an altered reality, in this gripping tale of redemption & choices. Altered Reality is directed by Don E. FauntLeRoy and written by Charles Agron, who also produces and stars in this film. The cast includes Tobin Bell, Charles Agron, Alyona Khmara, and Krista Dane Hoffman, with Edward Asner and Lance Henriksen. Aside from some terrible mixing in this trailer, it's hard to make any sense of whatever is going on in here.

However, the bread and butter for Saw is their traps. This time, John uses his traps on a pair of con artists once he realizes that a risky and experimental medical procedure is a scam. 2023 was a good year for villains. With social media discourse at an all-time low, public figures taking constant swipes at each other, and A.I. poised to render all news meaningless, it seems like the year was filled with nefarious people coming out of the woodwork to make our lives a little more stressful.
But no matter what nightmares we saw playing out in real life, we could rest in the knowledge that something equally evil or maybe even worse would be showing at our local cineplex or streaming platform. The horror genre is filled with larger-than-life foes from centuries-old monsters to futuristic killers and this year gave us villains in spades.
Some are humorous, some tragic, some pulled from reality, and some difficult to pin down. But regardless of their stories, the following ten villains made our lives just a little more terrifying – and if we don’t honor them here,...

Following the release of Jigsaw, it wasn’t clear where the Saw franchise would go, but I doubt anyone expected Chris Rock to pitch the next evolution of the series. Spiral: From the Book of Saw starred Chris Rock as a detective tracking down a Jigsaw copycat and was the first movie in the franchise not to include Tobin Bell. Unfortunately, Spiral only grossed $40 million worldwide and received mixed reviews from critics, squashing any potential sequel.
However, franchise producer Mark Burg isn’t ruling out a Spiral sequel. “Maybe one day we’ll come back to doing a sequel,” Burg told GamesRadar. “Chris Rock would love to do one, but our focus, because of the success and the response to Saw X, is Saw 11.” Saw X featured the grand return of Tobin Bell as John Kramer/Jigsaw, which is clearly what the fans wanted. Hollywood reeled in 2023. There’s no way around that. From striking creatives to the existential crisis of theatrical futures, this year held the entire entertainment industry in its death-like grasp. But as they say, when the going gets tough, the tough double down on the audience least likely to abandon ship. And anyone who’s actually sat and counted how many annual horror conventions there are knows exactly which audience to bet on.
It’s entirely possible that horror is the most stable and reliable movie genre, but just because its demographic is almost certainly the most voracious doesn’t mean they’re the least discerning. If anything, the list of films that almost made our top 10 would alone be ample ballast for the argument that horror aficionados cast their nets wider than fans of other genres. Take this list as a starting point, and then take it way further than you ever dared.

Are you ready to play another game? The "Saw" canon isn't exactly the easiest challenge for casual fans to make sense of -- Tobin Bell's John Kramer was infamously killed off way back in "Saw III," for instance, despite almost every movie since twisting itself into knots in order to include him in the action anyway -- but the series has gone on to become one of the longest-running (and most consistently-performing) horror franchises ever anyway. That streak was all but assured of continuing after the latest installment, "Saw X," earned the best reviews out of any of the movies and went on to slash its way to the top of the box office. America and, indeed, the entire world are demanding more Billy the Puppet and the maniacal Jigsaw games ... and Lionsgate has been listening.

"I want to play a game." These words carry spine-chilling weight in the "Saw" franchise, always succeeded by a set of rules for an impossible death trap that needs to be evaded within a time limit. Over the course of 10 movies, and the 7-minute short that started it all, the "Saw" franchise has ballooned into an unforgettable phenomenon that consistently deepens the mythos surrounding John Kramer/Jigsaw (Tobin Bell), while the traps become more hellish and elaborate.
Call them splatter films, or twisted psychological horror with ample gore, the entries within the "Saw" franchise have always prided themselves on their twist endings, which often re-contextualize how their stories are perceived in the first place. James Wan's directorial feature debut, "Saw," kickstarted this convention without foreknowledge of its legacy by ending on a horrifyingly memorable beat that is still widely discussed and debated.

'Saw XI' is set to be released in 2024.Lionsgate has officially announced plans for another instalment in the long running horror franchise and fans only have nine months to wait. The studio surprised fans by confirming the news out of nowhere on Monday (11.12.23) with a Saw-style backdrop and Roman numerals spelling out a September 27, 2024 release date. The caption simply read: "The game continues."It means the 11th movie in the iconic series will drop a year after 'Saw X' hit the big screen on September 29 this year.Although the turnaround seems fast, the franchise has managed it before with the success of 'Saw' prompting a sequel to be greenlit and released just 364 days later. Each subsequent 'Saw' movie was then released less than a year after its predecessor until 'Saw 3D' - the seventh in the franchise - which came 371 days after 'Saw VI'.

Jigsaw will be back inflict pain once more in Saw XI, and the new film is arriving in 2024: more details here.
It is rare for any franchise to reach ten films. It is even rarer for the tenth film to receive some of the best reviews of the series.
Such was the case with Saw X, the film that put Tobin Bell front and centre one again as malicious vigilante John Kramer/Jigsaw.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the impressive box office returns of Saw X, Lionsgate has confirmed that it is pressing ahead with Saw XI.
You won’t have to wait long to see it either, as the official Saw social media accounts posted an image stating the sequel would be with us in just over nine months time, on the 27th September 2024.

Lionsgate is back with a bang, announcing “Saw XI” with a slated release date of September 27, 2024. The news came out of the blue, especially since “Saw X” graced theaters just over two months ago. The announcement was made on Instagram, intriguing fans with Roman numerals set against a spooky “Saw” backdrop.
The “Saw” franchise is no stranger to fast-paced releases. Echoing the quick success of the earlier films, “Saw XI” is following closely on the heels of its predecessor. This pattern of rapid production has been a hallmark of the series since “Saw II” rushed to screens just a year after the original.

Box office numbers show that this strategy has paid off. “Saw X” was a hit, pulling in $53 million in North America and amassing $107 million globally. All this against a modest production budget of $13 million.

“The game continues.”
So reads a post to the official Lionsgate and Saw social media pages this afternoon. Along with it, the date 9.27.24 was posted which, one presumes, is the release date for the 11th film in Lionsgate’s durable franchise. That’s roughly the same window in which Saw X debuted this year.
The tenth installment of the franchise will chronologically take place between Saw I and Saw II. No official word on whether 81-year-old Tobin Bell will be back as the Jigsaw killer, though after 10 installments, it’s likely a safe bet.

Lionsgate wants to play another game. The studio made a surprise announcement of “Saw XI” on Monday afternoon, along with plans for the 11th entry in the long-running horror franchise to hit theaters just nine months from now.

Tobin Bell’s Jigsaw returned in this year’s Saw X and it was a huge success, not only in the box office ($107M worldwide) but also on Rotten Tomatoes where it currently sits with an 80% critic and 89% audience score.
It comes as no surprise that Lionsgate is moving forward with the next installment, Saw XI, which has been dated for September 27, 2024, almost exactly one year from the latest film’s release.
The news came across the official socials where the studio shared teaser art and the tagline: “The Game Continues…”
No director has been announced but I think it’s a safe bet that Kevin Greutert will return, as will Tobin Bell and likely Shawnee Smith as Amanda. We’ll share the official announce when it comes in.

This past weekend was a bit erratic with a few movies doing surprisingly better than others, but this weekend, there’s really only one new wide release, as much of December’s big holiday releases don’t hit until next week. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The one wide release is Gkids’ release of Hayao Miyazaki‘s latest animated feature, “The Boy and the Heron,” which has been playing in select cities but will get a nationwide release into roughly 1,800 theaters in both subtitled and dubbed versions, the latter often being the chosen format for parents with young kids. Miyazaki always gets amazing Western voice casts, this one including Robert Pattinson, Christian Bale, Mark Hamill, Willem Dafoe and many more.

At long last, Jigsaw returned in Saw X. Set between the events of Saw and Saw II, the tenth installment is a gruesome fan-pleaser led by a franchise-best performance from Tobin Bell as John Kramer.
Along with a six-part making-of documentary and more, the film’s home video release features an audio commentary by director-editor Kevin Greutert, cinematographer Nick Matthews, and production designer Anthony Stabley.
Here are nine things I learned from the Saw X commentary…
1. Kevin Greutert was unsure about the concept until he read the script.
Greutert — who edited six previous Saw films and directed Saw VI and Saw 3D — is one of the few Saw creatives to return for Saw X, but he wasn’t sold on the initial concept.

There are some people out there who will tell you the reason they like the "Saw" movies is because of the complex moral and ethical dilemmas they submerge their conflicted characters into. And that John Kramer, the most conflicted of them all, is among the most compelling villains in modern horror history -- if he's a true villain at all.
Well, I think everyone else is going to see heads smashed by blocks of ice and eyeballs sucked out of their sockets.
However you feel about the "Saw" movies, you can't deny that the decisive factor in their appeal is the blood, guts, and carnage. Destiny Entertainment has unveiled an official trailer for a mystery horror film titled The Cello, the latest film from acclaimed horror filmmaker Darren Lynn Bousman. This is actually a Saudi Arabian production, featuring a story about a talented Saudi cellist. What began as a simple two-hander about strangers chained in a squalid bathroom, enduring the twisted games of a mysterious tormentor, has evolved into an intricate saga spanning nearly twenty years and ten gruesome films. With every new "Saw" movie, the traps become bigger and more brutal, the timelines increasingly jumbled, and the twists even more mind-boggling. Each "Saw" entry delves deeper into (and complicates) the maniacal Jigsaw philosophy that forces people to confront their sins and appreciate the life they've been given.
Often regarded as part of the controversial horror subgenre "torture porn" (even though we may need to retire that term forever), the "Saw" films feature graphic depictions of mutilation and extreme violence in elaborate devices that are not for the faint of heart. While it can be daunting to tackle such a visceral and temporally complex series, there is really only one solid path to follow when...

Saw has returned! Tobin Bell is back as the famed serial killer and Saw X will explore events that took place before his infamous death in Saw III. The franchise burst onto the scene in 2004; Which means Saw has been in the mainstream for nearly 20 years. Admittedly, the series is overly convoluted, though that’s the charm of the ongoing franchise. However, the bread and butter for Saw is their traps and twists. You can’t have a Saw film without a huge twist. There’s certainly no shortage of them in the past nine films. This list will narrow down...

From the mid to late aughts, October horror was dominated by one word: Saw. In an impressive streak, the grisly franchise celebrated seven straight years with a new entry just in time for Halloween. Though sequels have been sporadic since the 2010 film Saw: The Final Chapter, this autumn brought another tale from Jigsaw’s world of twisted morality and the return of the legendary killer himself. Director Kevin Greutert’s story follows John Kramer (Tobin Bell) on a quest for revenge, but the film also features a fan favorite character and one of the saga’s first survivors. Set between the first and second franchise entries, Saw X sees the return of Amanda Young (Shawnee Smith) as an assistant/disciple of the dying murderer. Though her position in Jigsaw’s army would later be usurped by others, Amanda remains the franchise’s most heartbreaking character and the greatest condemnation of Jigsaw’s sociopathy.

No good villain is ever truly gone, especially in horror movies. This September saw the return of Tobin Bell as John Kramer, a.k.a. “Jigsaw,” the trap-making serial killer of the Saw movies, with the release of Saw X. This is despite the fact that Kramer has been dead since the end of Saw III, which came out back in 2006. But a little thing like death never stopped the Saw franchise. Instead of literally bringing Kramer back from the dead, the subsequent sequels continued Bell’s participation with devices like flashbacks. Hell, even Saw IV played a trick on audiences by staging a lot of its action at the same time as Saw III.
One of those post-Kramer sequels celebrates its 15th anniversary this year: Saw V, which featured Costas Mandylor as Detective Mark Hoffman, a murderous cop who became Jigsaw’s protégé and continued his campaign of bloodshed.

Nearly 20 years in, John Kramer continues to kill it at the box office. "Saw X," the latest installment in Lionsgate's long-running horror franchise, has officially crossed the $100 million mark globally thanks to Wednesday's grosses. Not that the movie wasn't already a hit before, but it now gets to count itself alongside seven other "Saw" movies that have grossed at least that much money worldwide, making such an impressive benchmark more of a rule than an exception.
"Saw X" curently sits at $52.7 million domestically and $47.9 million internationally for a grand total of $100.6 million worldwide to date, per Box Office Mojo. Director Kevin Greutert's film has already been available on VOD for some time, so the milestone was crossed somewhat quietly.
