Who is the best female TV star of all time? Our new photo gallery above takes on the tough task of ranking the 30 greatest actresses and performers. Agree or disagree with our choices?
With over 70 years of television to consider, we had to provide ourselves with a few rules to help simplify things. One of those was that every woman in our gallery must have been an ongoing leading lady at some point, preferably more often than not. That’s why you will not see such classic supporting actresses as Vivian Vance, Doris Roberts or Rhea Perlman.
In order to place them in the rankings, we were looking at a combination of quality (top rated shows with the public or critics), quantity (number of shows and TV appearances), Emmy wins and nominations, plus overall legacy and iconic nature. They also needed to be on television regularly for at least the last 15 years or more.

In a very unsettled drama Emmy field, one of the few ostensible locks this year is Elizabeth Debicki. With 4/1 odds, she is the runaway favorite to take home the Best Drama Supporting Actress Emmy for her turn as Princess Diana on “The Crown,” which would make the Netflix series the sixth show to deliver two different winners in the category.
Twelve shows have won drama supporting actress more than once. Of those, seven shows have had one person triumph repeatedly, including “Lou Grant” for Nancy Marchand, who won a record four times, and most recently “Ozark” for three-time champ Julia Garner. The five shows that saw the wealth spread among its cast members are “St. Elsewhere”, “The West Wing”, “Hill Street Blues”, “The Practice” and “thirtysomething”. No show has had more than two cast members win the award.
Interestingly, Marchand (1980-82; her first win was in ’78), Roberts (1983), Woodard (1984), Thomas (1985), Bartlett...

Television series don't always end on their own terms. Some of the greatest shows in the medium's history have been canceled due to low ratings before they could finish telling their overarching story or just as they were hitting their stride creatively. Some of the most egregious examples of series getting the axe before their time include "My So-Called Life," "Arrested Development," "Frank's Place," "Sports Night," "I'll Fly Away," "Deadwood," and "Mindhunters." It's possible no one has had a more brutal small-screen run than Judd Apatow, who, before he became a hit-making film producer, watched helplessly as three superb, critically acclaimed comedies — "The Ben Stiller Show," "Freaks and Geeks" and "Undeclared" — failed to earn a second season.
Sometimes, fan enthusiasm results in these works getting revived in some incarnation or another, and, unfortunately, the results are often unsightly. But at least there's a reason for going back. The same isn't...

Reboots of beloved shows from decades past can be easy ways to trap viewers through nostalgia. Some can break off and start to feel like their own entity (as with Frasier), while others are just cheapo cash grabs that bring nothing fresh to the original premise. But Ray Romano won’t even bother trying to find out how a reboot of Everybody Loves Raymond would fare with audiences, saying it is absolutely “out of the question.”
As for why Romano is shutting down even the idea of an Everybody Loves Raymond reboot, he has plenty of reasons, starting with the simple point that “they’re never as good…and we want to leave with our legacy as what it is.” There, too, would be two key cast members missing: Peter Boyle, who passed away in 2006 just one year after the sitcom went off the air, and Doris Roberts, who died...

“Everybody Loves Raymond” will not be getting a reboot, according to Ray Romano.
On “Real Time With Bill Maher,” Romano addressed the possibility of a reboot, saying, “As far as a reboot, well, it’s now out of the question because unfortunately the parents are gone: Peter Boyle and Doris Roberts.”
Boyle and Roberts portrayed Romano’s parents Frank and Marie Barone on the sitcom. Roberts died in 2016, while Boyle died in 2006, shortly after the show ended.
“They’re never as good,” Romano said of reboots. “We want to leave with our legacy with what it is.”
The news of no revival is a departure from other shows like “Night Court,” “Frasier” and “Roseanne,” which have all gotten their respective reboots in recent years.
Created by Philip Rosenthal, TV sitcom series “Everybody Loves Raymond” aired from 1996 to 2005. Romano starred as the Italian American Raymond “Ray” Barone, a Newsday sportswriter who lives with his wife,...

On the latest episode of Real Time, Bill Maher remembered Norman Lear, who died earlier this month at age 101, as someone who “opened a lot of doors” in television.
The host is preparing to head into his 22nd year of doing the late-night talk show, which got him thinking. He explained how the sitcom genius’ death put things in perspective for him because “without somebody like that, I couldn’t do what I do.”
“I think he opened a lot of doors, but a lot of those doors are shut,” Maher added. “TV is not what it was in the ’70s.”
He proceeded to ask his guests, Laura Coates, a CNN anchor and senior legal analyst, and Walter Kirn, an American novelist and literary critic, if they thought people “could do anything like what he did back then because I don’t think you could?”

Frasier got one. Roseanne got one. But Ray Romano says don’t hold your breath for an Everybody Loves Raymond reboot.
“As far as a reboot, well its out of the question,” Romano told Bill Maher on Real Time tonight.
For one, “They’re never as good,” he said, “and we want to leave with our legacy as what it is.”
Secondly and maybe more literally, Romano observed, “its out of the question because now his [Ray Barone’s] parents are gone: Peter Boyle and Doris Roberts.”
Maher praised him for not going back for another big payday. “You never went to a reboot. You had one of the most successful sitcoms of all time.”
Romano said he wanted to go out on top.
“The rest of the cast wanted it to go on,” he said, “but myself and [show runner] Phil Rosenthal, we thought it was time.

There are many good things to say about TV shows from the late 1990s and early 2000s. Some of the best sitcoms aired during the period, and they did several things well. We love the holiday episodes served up during the TV era. Several shows brought amazing classic Thanksgiving episodes to viewers, many of whom were looking for an escape before, during, and after the holidays. We’ve picked out four classic Thanksgiving episodes you should watch this year.
‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ always served up solid holiday episodes
Everybody Loves Raymond was a show that was made for holiday episodes. The holidays, especially Thanksgiving, really highlighted the dysfunctional family dynamics of the Barones. While the series had many great Thanksgiving offerings, we think “No Fat” is a classic.

The '80s were a different time; shoulder pads were in, Reaganomics was taking over the country, and in 1984, a hyper-stylish show called "Miami Vice" was about to become all the rage. Before the Florida-set cop series ever premiered on NBC, though, it had already inspired another series, one that seemed to have very little in common with the Michael Mann-produced action show.
That series was "The Golden Girls," the popular and gut-bustingly funny sitcom about women of a certain age that has only become more beloved in the decades since it ended. "The Golden Girls" is remembered for its positive and honest conversations about aging and its characters' penchant for savage, hilarious quips. It also bolstered the fame of its already-famous stars, Bea Arthur ("Maude"), Betty White ("The Mary Tyler Moore Show"), Rue McClanahan (also "Maude"), and Estelle Getty ("Mask"). Everybody Loves Raymond had a rather impressive run. The show, which focused on the inner workings of the Barone family, managed to carve out its own niche, despite having stiff competition. Premiering in September 1996, the show competed against the likes of Friends, Mad About You, Seinfeld, and Friends in the comedy genre. The series still managed to amass fans because it was different from the other comedies on TV at the time. The series finale is what really set the show apart, though. The Everybody Loves Raymond finale was subdued and simple, unlike the more grandiose finales that seem traditional for long-running series.

“The Marvelous Mrs Maisel” is coming to an end as its fifth and final season streams on Amazon Prime Video. The successful comedy, which has bagged 20 Emmys to date including a Best Comedy Series win in 2018, follows Rachel Brosnahan‘s titular Miriam “Midge” Maisel who, after her husband leaves, pursues a career in stand-up comedy. A key character in this pursuit is Alex Borstein‘s Susie Myerson, who runs the Gaslight Café, where Midge first begins her stand-up career.
As Susie, Borstein delivers a no-holds-barred performance as she creates an unorthodox, straight-talking, hilarious character who becomes Midges’ manager later in the series. Critics think she is deserving of another Emmy nomination for this fifth and final season of “The Marvelous Mrs Maisel.” Among those singing her praises:

It was clear the days of the Big Four networks dominating the Emmys were slowly coming to an end 20 years ago; however, despite cable networks starting to gain momentum (with two receiving their first major wins), NBC and CBS still made a strong showing at the 55th Emmy Awards on September 21, 2003. HBO came into the night with a strong 53 major nominations, while NBC had 38 and CBS had 28; in the end, HBO and CBS tied with eight majors awards each and NBC trailed with six. Garry Shandling opened the event with a comedic monologue, while numerous presenters, including Ellen DeGeneres, George Lopez, Conan O’Brien, Martin Short and Wanda Sykes, carried the rest of the show without a host. Read on for our Emmys flashback 20 years ago to 2003.

Back in the 1980s, John Larroquette dominated Best Comedy Supporting Actor at the Emmys. He won the category four times in a row (1985-88) for playing Dan Fielding on the NBC sitcom “Night Court.” Now, 35 years after his last win for the show and this time in Best Comedy Actor, he’s seeking to join an even more exclusive club of actors who have won five Emmys for playing the same character.
If Larroquette were to claim a fifth Emmy for playing Fielding, he would join three other performers who have also won that amount. Don Knotts won five times in Best Comedy Supporting Actor for his role as Deputy Sherrif Barney Fife on “The Andy Griffith Show” in 1961, 1962, 1963, 1967 and 1968. Ed Asner won three Emmys in Best Comedy Supporting Actor for playing Lou Grant on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and then two for Best Drama Actor for the same character on the spin-off show,...

NBC network dominated the 35th annual Primetime Emmys, with a groundbreaking drama continuing a winning streak, a little-watched sitcom making its name known and another sitcom proving the network might have cancelled it too soon. Eddie Murphy and Joan Rivers hosted the event on September 25, 1983. Rivers claimed she had waited nine years for an invitation to the Emmys, and would be wearing every dress she owed (which ended up being nine), and Murphy was excited about his first nomination. Two years prior, a little police drama had debuted, changing television with its realism and continuing storylines involving the personal lives of the characters. “Hill Street Blues” not only dominated the Nielsen ratings, but it won numerous Emmys throughout its run. This year would mark its third of four consecutive Best Drama Series victories, winning over “Cagney & Lacey,” “Fame,” “Magnum, P.I.” and “St. Elsewhere.

In 2006 a movie titled Grandma’s Boy slipped into the public eye and did fairly well since those who watched it managed to get a good laugh and were excited to see the new characters that were brought to life by the friends of Adam Sandler that one tends to see in so many of his movies. Allen Covert took the lead in this feature and was given a great deal of support by not only those he’d acted with before but also a few stars that surprised a lot of people since Doris Roberts, Shirley Jones, and Shirley

A superb thriller is now better than ever on 4K. We’ve always known why it rewards viewings: it’s both thrilling and funny. When Robert Shaw, Martin Balsam and Hector Elizondo hijack a subway train, Walter Matthau must scramble to collect a ransom while trying to figure out how they’ll make their escape. Peter Stone’s dialogue is delightful — the loud & mouthy ’70s New Yorkers are hilariously abrasive — and lovable. “Who wants to know?!!!” Includes a Blu-ray disc and a new commentary.

Christmas is coming at us faster than Santa’s sleigh, which means ’tis the season for streaming Christmas movies. While there are plenty of family-friendly options for parents — from classics like “A Charlie Brown Christmas” to new entries like this year’s “Spirited” on Apple TV+ — some may prefer a slightly more raunchy selection, which is where 1989’s “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” comes in.
“Christmas Vacation” is streaming on several online platforms, including HBO Max, AMC+, The Roku Channel, fuboTV, Philo, and Sling TV. It can also be rented or purchased on VOD platforms, including YouTube, Vudu, Google Play, Apple TV, and Redbox, for 3.99. In addition, AMC will air the film throughout the next few days at 8 or 10 p.m. Et, including on December 21, December 22, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.

Trailblazing medical drama series “St. Elsewhere” celebrates its 40th anniversary on October 26. Gold Derby recently gathered together 10 cast members of the NBC program for a special reunion. All episodes from the six-season original run are now available for streaming on Hulu.
The series never had the greatest of overall ratings but was saved time and again by the Peacock network due to its Emmy wins and nominations, plus excellent demographics among the 18-49 viewers who advertisers coveted. The show was set at the fictional Boston hospital St. Eligius (nicknamed St. Elsewhere because its rundown conditions), tackling topical medical subjects with unexpected deaths among the patients and staff members throughout the six seasons airing 1982-1988.

20 years ago, TV looked a lot different. Nobody had ever heard of a streaming service, TiVo was how we recorded our favorite shows and a group of Friends ruled the airwaves. At the 2002 Primetime Emmy Awards, The West Wing took home its third of four consecutive wins for Outstanding Drama Series, Everybody Loves Raymond's Doris Roberts won her first of three consecutive trophies for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, Oprah Winfrey took home the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award and Friends won its first—and only!—prize for Outstanding Comedy Series. Fresh off the season one finale of American Idol and the first season of The Osbournes, the night also held significance as reality...

Over the course of 47 years, “Saturday Night Live” has amassed 94 acting Emmy nominations, 40 of which have gone to series regulars. Nine of these belong to Kate McKinnon, who, since surpassing Kristen Wiig in 2018, has held the record among all “SNL” repertory players for most TV academy notices. The NBC sketch show’s longest-serving female cast member just concluded her 11-season tenure and is now seeking her third Best Comedy Supporting Actress trophy, having bagged her first two in 2016 and 2017. If she succeeds, she will follow Valerie Harper (“The Mary Tyler Moore Show”), Rhea Perlman (“Cheers”), Laurie Metcalf (“Roseanne”) and Doris Roberts (“Everybody Loves Raymond”) as the category’s fifth triple champion.
McKinnon has submitted “Host: Natasha Lyonne,” the 47th season finale, for Emmy consideration. Her swan song performance consists of appearances in the episode’s first and last sketches, with the former constituting the sixth reprisal of her Colleen Rafferty character.

The Emmy landscape has changed drastically in the past two decades. Going in to the 54th Emmy Awards, which took place on Sept. 22, 2002, it was a broadcast network — NBC — that led the nominations with 47. Emmy powerhouse HBO came in second with 38. FX and VH1 earned their first nominations while the first major streaming series, Netflix’s “House of Cards,” was still 11 years away. Several of this year’s contenders for Emmy gold were either nominated or won 20 years ago.
Laura Linney, who has been nominated nine times and won four statuettes, is nominated this year for her lead role in the final season of Netflix’s “Ozark” and as co-executive producer of this drama series contender. Two decades ago, she won her first Emmy for her lead role in the Showtime telefilm “Wild Iris.”

Four months after her death in 2021, Jessica Walter became the first deceased performer to earn a Primetime Emmy nomination for voice acting. Her fifth career bid and first for vocal work came for “Archer,” on which she played the titular animated spy’s mother for the last dozen years of her life. After receiving her first posthumous notice for the show’s 11th season last July, she has now been honored with another for its 12th. This makes her the first departed actor ever recognized by the TV academy across multiple years.

Seventeen years ago, “Everybody Loves Raymond” pulled off a rare feat at the 2005 Emmys when it won Best Comedy Series for a second time non-consecutively. Usually in this specific category, if the Emmys like you they really like you, and they give you the trophy year after year. In fact, “Raymond” is the only comedy series of the modern era to not follow this pattern. Can “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” now follow in its footsteps?
CBS’s dearly departed family sitcom initially prevailed in 2003 for its seventh season, then it lost in 2004 to Fox newcomer “Arrested Development.” In 2005, “Everybody Loves Raymond” rebounded with a second and final victory for its farewell season. That was quite a shocker indeed as it took down, among others, ABC’s freshman ratings juggernaut “Desperate Housewives.”

“Ted Lasso’s” Hannah Waddingham and Juno Temple could join an elite club if they both manage to repeat getting nominated for Best Comedy Supporting Actress this year. The Apple TV Plus featured players would become the 13th duo to score multiple Emmy nominations in that category at the same time. Waddingham, the category’s reigning Emmy champ, plays AFC Richmond owner Rebecca Welton, while Temple, who earned a bid last year, takes on the role of marketing manager Keeley Jones.

The way we watch television has changed a lot in the past couple of decades, as evidenced by the 54th Primetime Emmy Awards 20 years ago. Whereas streaming services and cable networks dominate the ceremonies now, 20 years ago NBC had the most major nominations with 47 and most major wins with 10; however, HBO was a strong contender, coming in second with 38 major noms and eight wins. This was also the first year that FX and VH1 received major nominations. Conan O’Brien hosted the ceremony on September 22, 2002, and even though some old “friends” were recognized, there were clear indicators that the major three networks were no longer in command. Read on for our Emmys flashback 20 years ago to 2002.

“To say that this is a dream come true is an understatement,” marveled Sutton Foster in 2002 when Jerry Orbach and Doris Roberts called her name as the winner of the Tony Award for her performance in “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” Now exactly 20 years later, Foster could win her third trophy for her work in the revival of the classic Broadway musical “The Music Man,” starring opposite fellow Tony winner Hugh Jackman. According to Gold Derby’s combined predictions, Emmys history is about to be made in the top five comedy categories. Throughout the first 73 years of Primetime Emmy ceremonies, the categories of Best Comedy Series, Best Comedy Actress, Best Comedy Actor, Best Comedy Supporting Actress and Best Comedy Supporting Actor have never repeated exactly from one year to the next. Until now? Remember, last year Apple TV Plus’ “Ted Lasso” took four of those trophies, while HBO Max’s “Hacks” claimed the fifth (lead actress). Now our current racetrack odds predict the 2022 Emmys will give viewers a major case of deja vu.
“Ted Lasso” is hoping to become the first show since “Veep” to win back-to-back statuettes for Comedy Series, and the first since “Modern Family” to prevail specifically for Season 1 and Season 2. The uplifting series follows the quirky AFC Richmond soccer team in their quest to be taken seriously in the English Premier League.

Who is the best female TV star of all time? Our photo gallery above takes on the tough task of ranking the 30 greatest actresses and performers.
We also didn’t rank any news anchors or reporters such as Barbara Walters, Diane Sawyer or Lesley Stahl since they are not performers.

Every breakout independent hit seems like a miracle. This delightful ‘little’ picture was fated to be ghetto-ized into ethnic theaters before its producers opted to distribute it themselves. Capturing a vibrant part of the immigrant experience, Joan Micklin Silver’s micro-production often has a big-picture look; it charmed audiences and became a sleeper success. Star Carol Kane was nominated for an acting Oscar as ‘Gitl,’ a woman with Old-Country values plus the grit and determination to win a better life. Also with fine performances from Steven Keats, Mel Howard, Dorrie Kavanaugh and Doris Roberts.

In 2000, following two unsuccessful Screen Actors Guild Award nominations against women who all hailed from other shows, Calista Flockhart was placed in direct competition with her “Ally McBeal” costar, Lucy Liu. Though they ultimately lost that year’s Best TV Comedy Actress prize to Lisa Kudrow (“Friends”), their dual bids set a precedent that has been followed 15 more times in the two decades since. This year, “Ted Lasso” actresses Juno Temple and Hannah Waddingham are both up for this award, but history shows that there is only a 20% chance of one of them winning. While this is good news for all three of their competitors, past data indicates that some are better positioned than others.

One year after she took home the 2001 Screen Actors Guild Award for Best TV Comedy Actress, Sarah Jessica Parker broke new ground with her “Sex and the City” costars as they became the first and only all-female cast to win a SAG TV ensemble prize. Although she lost that year’s individual race to Megan Mullally (“Will & Grace”), her nomination there was notable in that her castmate, Kim Cattrall, was also included in the lineup.
This made them the third pair of actresses from the same show to face off in this category. In the time since, seven more duos have followed, including four in the last five years alone. Now, exactly two decades after the Cattrall-Parker battle, the new “Sex and the City” revival “And Just Like That” could produce the category’s next costar showdown.

Immediately after she was named the best comedic TV actress of 2020 by the Screen Actors Guild, Catherine O’Hara praised her “Schitt’s Creek” costar Annie Murphy as “a beautiful soul” and stated, “I share this with [her].” The on-screen mother-daughter duo were placed in direct competition here less than seven months after they both triumphed at the Emmys, where O’Hara was deemed a lead while Murphy was classified as supporting. Since SAG does not separate TV performers by role size, showdowns like this are fairly common. Indeed, there has been at least one instance in this category ever year since 2017, and Hannah Einbinder and Jean Smart of “Hacks” are now looking to continue the tradition.
HBO Max’s “Hacks,” the first season of which concluded in June, focuses on struggling Las Vegas stand-up comedian Deborah Vance (Smart) and her new writing partner Ava Daniels (Einbinder) as they navigate their working relationship and personal lives.

And it seemed to work for ‘Friends’ and, uh, no takers,” Rosenthal said during a taping of SiriusXM’s “Pop Culture Spotlight With Jessica Shaw” that will air Tuesday (via Entertainment Weekly).
Rosenthal continued: “Maybe someone will hear this and say, ‘Hey, this seems like a no-brainer.’ I think people like the show, I think they would like to see the cast together.

Everybody Loves Raymond creator Phil Rosenthal has a number of ideas for a cast reunion, but finding a home for the special has been harder than expected.
“Here’s what I really can’t believe. I’ve pitched to now a couple of different places,” Rosenthal said on SiriusXM’s Pop Culture Spotlight with Jessica Shaw. “We can do a reunion special, we can tell the stories of the things that have happened to us at home…and it seemed to work for Friends and, no takers.”
Everybody Loves Raymond, which ran from 1996 to 2005, follows the family life sportswriter Ray Barone (Ray Romano). The series also featured Patricia Heaton, Brad Garrett, Doris Roberts and Peter Boyle.
When Shaw responded that she also could not believe Rosenthal’s difficulty in finding a studio to house the special, the showrunner expressed some optimism: “Maybe someone will hear this and say, ‘Hey, this seems like a no brainer.

Max Rosenthal, a Holocaust survivor and father of “Everybody Loves Raymond” creator Phil Rosenthal who became a character in many of his son’s TV projects, died June 26 at the age of 95, his son confirmed.
Max Rosenthal was known for his appearances on his son’s food-focused unscripted series, “I’ll Have What Phil’s Having” for PBS and “Somebody Feed Phil” for Netflix. He had a recurring role on “Raymond” during its 1996-2005 run on CBS as Max, a lodge buddy of Peter Boyle’s Frank Barone.
“As heartbroken as we are, we are so grateful that he was our dad, our grandpa, our friend, our favorite and funniest TV star and the role model for how to live 95 years while being the sweet, gentle, kind, compassionate and really, really funny,” Phil Rosenthal wrote Sunday on Instagram. He called him “the biggest influence in my life.”

Jean Smart won her third Emmy Award in 2008 for playing Regina Newly, mother of Samantha “Sam” Newly (Christina Applegate), on ABC’s comedy “Samantha Who.” After claiming her trophy from presenter Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Smart proclaimed at the podium, “Thank you so much. I just wanted to let you know I have a tuxedo on under this dress, but I’m not ripping it off.” She was referring to an earlier skit in the ceremony in which Heidi Klum, one-fifth of the year’s reality TV Emmy hosts, had her breakaway tuxedo removed by Tom Bergeron and William Shatner, revealing a dress underneath. Watch Smart’s Emmy flashback video above.
Smart took down co-nominees Kristin Chenoweth (“Pushing Daisies”), Amy Poehler (“Saturday Night Live”), Holland Taylor (“Two and a Half Men”) and Vanessa Williams (“Ugly Betty”) to win the statuette for Best Comedy Supporting Actress. It was her third career Emmy after...

At the Emmys, Kate McKinnon has been the most successful “Saturday Night Live” cast member by far. She has been nominated seven times for Best Comedy Supporting Actress for her various roles on the sketch comedy. Our odds say she’s a pretty safe bet for her eighth nomination this year. If we’re right, that will put her one step closer to the all-time record in her category.
The record is shared by two women: Loretta Swit (“M*A*S*H”) and Rhea Perlman (“Cheers”), both of whom were nominated 10 times. That’s a tough number to reach since there aren’t many shows that last a decade on the air, let alone retain that much goodwill with the television academy. The only other actress who has been nominated eight times is Megan Mullally (“Will and Grace”), who only got her eighth bid after her show had gone off the air and been revived.
