Harlan Shepherd is a robot created by Val Shepherd to improve the quality of life for human beings. That was the idea, and Harlan should’ve been a friendly robot using his artificial intelligence to help his maker and her species. Instead, Harlan makes his name as the first AI terrorist in the world.
Why did Harlan flee from Earth?
Harlan was the first AI robot who manipulated his primary codes to go rogue. Harlan reprogrammed every single bot or machine that was powered by AI. Harlan first wreaked havoc in the Indian city of Bangalore and killed over 500 thousand people by drone strikes. Harlan’s army of terrorist bots soon spread out around the world, and the death toll kept rising. Harlan wants to wipe out the majority of the population from Earth since humans are bound to destroy the planet themselves. His motivations for killing people to cleanse...

Satisfying people’s never-ending interest in science fiction series, Apple TV has become presumably the main platform that releases the most inventive shows in the genre.

John Trimble, longtime Trekkie and fan advocate, passed away on April 19, 2024. He was 87 years old. The world of "Star Trek" owes the man a debt.
Bjo and John Trimble were Trekkies from the very start. Indeed, the married couple were early adopters of "Star Trek," becoming enamored of the series before the word "Trekkies" had even become a part of the fan lexicon. Trimble met Betty JoAnn Conway through the fan networks first set up by genre-movie ultra-booster Forrest J Ackerman, having first conversed while hiding underneath a grand piano at Ackerman's house during a party. They were married for 64 years.
Back in the 1960s, sci-fi and fantasy fan networks were achieved solely through the mail, and Trekkies would communicate almost exclusively through letters columns printed in the backs of sci-fi magazines (a model first invented by Hugo Guernsback back in 1926). More enterprising fans would author and print their own fanzines,...

It's been more than two decades since Naoki Urasawa started publishing a manga based on a story arc from Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy. Urasawa changed many details in his reinterpretation, but his new version of the story has been capturing the public imagination since its first issue in 2003.
Now the reinterpretation has been interpreted again – as an animated series. And it turns out, it's really, really good.
So What's The Story?
Pluto takes place in the aftermath of a massive war involving both humans and robots. Now the world is at peace, and thanks to new laws (and programming) it's been eight years since a robot has killed a human. Robots are also now granted equal rights.
When a powerful, famous, and beloved war hero robot is found destroyed, Europol robot detective Gesicht is sent to investigate. As the bodies start piling up, Gesicht realizes that he may be...

The last 70 years of science fiction, horror, and fantasy wouldn't just look remarkably different without the works of Richard Matheson, they'd be comparatively barren. Okay, this is a touch hyperbolic, but only a touch! Yes, we'd still have the transporting, thought-provoking works of maestros like Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, Philip K. Dick, and so many others, but could you imagine living in a world sans such essential tales as "The Incredible Shrinking Man," "I Am Legend," "Hell House," and dozens upon dozens of eerily prescient (or just straight up horrifying) short stories? And these weren't just spellbinding reads. They formed the basis for many memorable movies, and, perhaps most influentially, 16 unforgettable episodes of "The Twilight Zone."
Countless writers and filmmakers have cited Matheson as crucial to their development as genre storytellers (Stephen King considers "Hell House" to be "the scariest haunted house novel ever written"), and you could argue that...

When I was in high school, kids wouldn’t shut up about Isaac Asimov, the American writer and professor of biochemistry at Boston University. When he wasn’t molding young minds in the classroom, Asimov was busy becoming one of the “Big Three” science-fiction writers worldwide. Cerebral and scientific, Asimov’s writing teased the brain and tickled the imagination. In 1988, Asimov partnered with Michael Wagner to create the short-lived TV series Probe. Looked upon fondly by those who remember it, Probe lasted for two months before getting yanked from the ABC Network.

The 1950s saw a boom of science fiction stories focused on the concept of psionics. Authors took nascent studies of the brain and its potential to wild places, exploring what could happen if humanity was able to use 100% of our brain capacity and gained superpowers. Everyone from Frank Herbert to Isaac Asimov, James Blish, and many more tapped into this concept.
When it came time for George Lucas to pivot away from doing a "Flash Gordon" movie and instead come up with his own fictional universe with enough worldbuilding to sustain a prequel trilogy, he developed his own version of psionics and combined it with elements of several world religions. The result was the Jedi and the concept of The Force, which are integral to the "Star Wars" universe and the success of its films. These movies gave audiences a unique yet also familiar imagery of samurai wizard monks. The Jedi were instantly memorable,...

Besides the skillfully adapted screenplay, the I, Robot cast played a huge role in the movie’s success. Although several Isaac Asimov fans criticized the movie when it was released, I, Robot became one of the century’s best films on Artificial Intelligence and robotics. Jeff Vintar, who worked on the earlier screenplay and story, based it on Isaac Asimov’s short-story collection. Set in 2035, I, Robot showed a more relatable and functional future use of robots and AI. Detective Del Spooner is called to investigate the alleged suicide of Alfred Lanning, co-founder of U.S. Robotics. With a natural distrust and disgust

Publicity materials for Netflix’s new sci-fi drama 3 Body Problem refer to Benedict Wong’s character, a slightly rough-around-the-edges investigator with cross-jurisdictional concerns, as “Da Shi.”
It’s a nod to Liu Cixin’s novel of roughly the same title, in which the delightfully uncouth Shi Quiang is referred to as Da Shi (“Big Shi”) as a term of endearment. But nobody who hasn’t read the book will know why Wong’s character is being described that way, since he’s now a British-born character less mythically named “Clarence.” The character in the series is perfectly entertaining, but he doesn’t stand out iconoclastically in even a similar way. He’s flatter, less surprising and generally a lot more conventional.

Less than two weeks after it was announced that production would be delayed on Apple TV+’s sci-fi series Foundation, word has come that filming is again planned to resume. Filming was put on pause earlier this month due to issues related to budgetary concerns and the production itself. Cameras will now roll on the third season of Foundation beginning on March 6th.
In the meantime, cast and crew were dismissed, leaving major questions about the status of Foundation. Now it seems as if the budget has been brought down, allowing the team to move forward. For reference, season one of Foundation had a budget pegged around $45 million. These aren’t quite Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings numbers but that is some serious cash for a TV series, something that has become more common, especially in the realm of sci-fi.

There are many ingredients to the success of 1977's "Star Wars," from its spectacular cast of mostly unknowns to the groundbreaking special effects that revolutionized the industry and its lived-in universe rich in details and history. But another vital ingredient that ensured "Star Wars" would remain in audiences' minds forever was its use of iconography. Every visual aspect of the movie is memorable and striking, from the look of the human characters and alien creatures to the spaceships and buildings.
Take the stormtroopers, the faceless mob of soldiers with terrible aim and a tendency to bonk their heads on the ceiling. Though mere blaster fodder in the franchise, the stormtroopers are as much a part of "Star Wars" as the lightsaber or the Millennium Falcon. Even after 40 years, the franchise continues to find new uses for the stormtroopers, like finally showing how they became the main army of the Empire in "The Bad Batch.

(Welcome to Ani-time Ani-where, a regular column dedicated to helping the uninitiated understand and appreciate the world of anime.)
Listen, I love anime and the endless possibilities of the medium. Unfortunately, much like how Hollywood is mostly inundated by uncomplicated four-quadrant blockbusters that get tiring after a while, anime, too, is inundated with uncomplicated action-centric titles that cater to a mass audience. There's a reason the vast majority of anime shows are about teenagers, which is fine but it means that anytime a show comes out that deals with adult characters and mature themes it is worth paying attention to.
So imagine how thrilled I was to find out that there was an anime adaptation of a manga by the guy who gave us the anime equivalent of an HBO prestige drama — and it is based on a story by the man who created anime as we know it.
That anime is "Pluto.

It’s impossible to pin “Poor Things” down at any place or time except its own. It begins in a vaguely Victorian London, with scrappy medical student Max McCandles (Ramy Youssef) being brought into the Baxter home to obscure the development of Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), who has the body of an adult woman but the mind of an infant. As that fact suggests, the technology, travel methods, and science of “Poor Things” would all be at home in an Isaac Asimov novel, let alone the 1992 Alasdair Gray novel the film is based on.

And also: Westerns, samurai movies, Inglourious Basterds, ancient mythology (Greek, Roman, and a smattering of Eastern), the Dungeons & Dragons monsters’ manual, those old-school Roger Dean album covers, Frank Frazetta’s paintings, Hideo Kojima’s video games, James Fenimore Cooper’s “Leatherstocking Tales,” the collected works of Robert Heinlein and Piers Anthony, and six out of the nine short stories...

Opposable Thumbs: How Siskel & Ebert Changed Movies Forever by Matt Singer (G.P. Putnam’s Sons)
As an adolescent in the early 1990s, one of my Sunday night rituals was recording that week’s episode of “Siskel & Ebert”––it aired late-night in Buffalo, NY––and watching it the following day. The internet was in its infancy, so the reviews of Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert were both a lifeline to what was happening in film and a cinematic education. It is no exaggeration to say that I learned how to discuss movies thanks to Gene and Roger. For my generation, then, the release of...

The highest-ranked TV shows of 2023 on the popular review site RottenTomatoes.com span multiple genres. Not surprisingly, there are two crime shows with this distinction, both fronted by formidable female cops. The final season of the gripping Happy Valley (AMC+) centers on British Sgt. Catherine Cawood (a powerful Sarah Lancashire), while dark comedy Deadloch (Prime Video) shows bickering partners solving murders in a quirky Tasmanian town. Then there’s a trio of coming-of-age stories: The irresistible Reservation Dogs (Hulu) depicts the blossoming of four Native American teens on an Oklahoma reservation; Primo (Freevee) is about ambitious Mexican American teen Rafa (Ignacio Diaz-Silverio) and his unique family; and comedy The Other Two (Max) shows the struggle of millennial sibs (Heléne Yorke and Drew Tarver) when their baby brother (Case Walker) attains overnight fame. The only sci-fi winner: Foundation (Apple TV+), based on Isaac Asimov’s iconic trilogy about warring empires. Tasty...

If Lee Pace's slightly too-perfect smile in the picture above didn't give it away, then the news currently making its way around social media will. David S. Goyer's "Foundation" series, which recently wrapped up its second critically-acclaimed season this past September on Apple TV+ (you can read /Film's review by Joshua Meyer here), has officially been renewed for season 3. That means plenty more timeline-twisting, philosophical, and downright nerdy storytelling to come.
In no time at all, Apple TV+ has made itself a prime destination for well-received, original shows -- especially when it comes to the kind of sci-fi stories that, to put it frankly, likely wouldn't have struck most studio executives as "audience-friendly." Luckily, the streaming service has apparently crunched enough numbers to justify another go-around with "Foundation," which is based on influential sci-fi author Isaac Asimov's original novels and tells the epic tale of the vast...

However, the announcement didn’t hint at when the third season might arrive on the streaming service.

One of the most notable criteria that establishes a work of art as classic in the true sense of the term is its lasting relevance through different periods of time, which can also be achieved by the scope of reinterpretation provided by the creator as well. Known as the “Father of Manga,” Osamu Tezuka’s masterpiece Astro Boy has proven to be such a piece of art that retains a timeless essence at its core—something that has inspired artists for the last sixty years. The story of Atom, a superpowered android kid whose humanity is his greatest asset, captivated fans of all ages, but most importantly, another legendary mangaka, Naoki Urasawa.
As they say, greatness inspires greatness, Urasawa decided to put his own grim-dark, mystery spin into retelling the most significant story arc of Astro Boy, known as ‘The Greatest Robot on Earth’—and thus, Pluto was created. A tale,...

After "The Last of Us" video game became one of the most acclaimed games of the past decade and was lauded as a game-changer, this year saw its live-action TV adaptation heralded as one of the best video game adaptations, ever. Both are not only fantastic horror stories but gripping dramas with a focus on characters.
The "Last of Us" franchise has become such a game-changing addition to the zombie genre that instead of spawning cheap competitors that cash in on its success, it is actually scaring the competition away. At least one big zombie movie is reportedly no longer happening, in part due to "The Last of Us." Speaking with GQ for the release of "The Killer," David Fincher addressed his long-awaited sequel to "World War Z."

Isaac Asimov is considered one of the biggest science fiction minds of the 20th century, along with authors like Robert A. Heinlein and Arthur C. Clarke. He wrote hundreds of books, including his highly influential "Robot" and "Foundation" series. These shaped many of the sci-fi stories of today, establishing familiar tropes like the galactic empire, and robots being programmed to be unable to harm humans.
Books like "Dune" and "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" owe a lot to Asimov, as do movies like "Star Wars." And yet, Asimov wasn't exactly the biggest sci-fi fan out there, at least not in TV and film. In an interview with the L.A. Times in 1988, Asimov simply described the "Star Trek" films, "Planet of the Apes" and "Back to the Future" as "decent." Asimov even wrote an essay for TV Guide that criticized "Star Trek" and its take on science -- though he...

One of the major changes utilized in AppleTV+’s Foundation, as compared to Isaac Asimov’s novel series of the same name, was the introduction of the genetic Cleon dynasty. In the far future, human beings have spread throughout the cosmos and have managed to establish a galactic empire. To avoid confusion and the possibilities of family feuds and infighting resulting from a claim to the throne, the last emperor, Cleon I, decided to initiate the ultimate form of autocracy by cloning himself through generations and forever being the only one to rule over trillions in succession.
To employ the concept of cloning even more brilliantly, at any given era, three clones of Cleon I at different stages of their lives were assigned as Emperors. Brother Dawn, the youngest, who learns about the intricacies of being a ruler and prepares himself for taking the reins in the future; Brother Day,...

From unique bio-organisms, hybrid monstrosities, and sentient androids, Isaac Asimov’s cosmic universe is filled with archetypal creations that have influenced the lore of a number of other franchises. One of the major factions of Asimov’s verse, the Mentalics, was introduced in the second season of Apple TV+’s Foundation, adapted from the novel series of the same name. Mentalics are psychically enhanced beings who can communicate, project, and interact through telepathy. Through Gaal Dornick’s central role in the narrative of the interplanetary saga, the Mentalics are explored further, and their role will be integral in the upcoming world-building of Foundation, including the arrival of the series’ most important figure, the Mule. Let’s take a look at the connection established with the unique community and what role mental health professionals might play in the future.

There is a certain saying in theological studies that talks about accepting the situations one cannot change, having the courage to change what can be changed, and having the wisdom to know the difference between both situations. The precepts of Foundation are by no means grounded in theology, yet Isaac Asimov’s masterwork heavily hinges on these principles, as shown throughout the first season of Apple TV+’s adaptation of the novel series and also in the recently concluded second season as well.
The first season of Foundation primarily dealt with the conflict between brilliant mathematician Hari Seldon and the genetic Cleon dynasty, the rulers of the Galactic Empire, stemming from the fact that Hari’s calculations based on psychohistory predicted the downfall of the Empire. As a deterrent, after being banished to planet Terminus, Hari created the Foundation, which is an institute to preserve the essentials of human civilization...

"The Creator" will mark Gareth Edwards' hopefully-triumphant return to filmmaking after he kind of swore off big-budget sci-fi following the difficult shoot of "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story." (Has anyone ever come out of making a "Star Wars" movie mentally and emotionally unscathed?) Edwards' new film seems to be an ambitious sci-fi tale with a big scope despite a relatively modest budget (certainly compared to a Star War). The film is also unfortunately rather timely, as it tells the story of a world at war with artificial intelligence threatening to extinguish humanity. It's a timeliness Edwards did not anticipate or predict, but it's certainly the aspect of the film that makes it most intriguing in 2023.
Despite there being rather little commonality between "The Creator" and "Star Wars," other than Edwards' name, there's a theme that connects them, at least in that "The Creator" promises to tackle a subject "Star...
