Seldom have actors in the history of Tinseltown left as much of an enduring legacy as Marlon Brando. The late actor’s legacy can still be felt in the film industry, thanks to his iconic roles in flicks like The Godfather and A Streetcar Named Desire. But one of his most elusive and challenging roles was in Francis Coppola’s 1979 epic war movie, Apocalypse Now.
Did we mention that this was the role that paved the way for one of the most enduring villains in recent superhero cinema?

Josh Brolin brought Thanos to life in Avengers: Infinity War (2018) in a way that had never been seen before in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And according to the actor himself, his inspiration came from Brando’s portrayal in Apocalypse Now.
After all, Brando pushed the envelope with his portrayal of rebellious military officer Colonel Kurtz.

As far as superhero films are concerned, the aura of the character is not just in the powers they possess but also in their appearance. The costume, therefore, is a key component that adds to the appeal of these icons from the comic book world. From Marvel’s Spider-Man to DC’s Superman, costume designers in Hollywood have pushed the envelope to bring out the nuances of these characters.

Designer James Acheson has proved that he is the authority in this regard, having designed Tobey Maguire’s 2002 suit for Spider-Man and Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel costume. While Zack Snyder’s chequered relationship with audiences restricted some fans from appreciating the modern Superman suit, the realization that both these outfits were designed by the same person, is making them look at these costumes in a new light.

Is there any current director who is more controversial than Zack Snyder? It’s wild how divisive a figure he is, with his fans nearly cult-like in their devotion, while his detractors are just as fervent. Here at JoBlo, we’ve always been ardent supporters, even if we haven’t unquestioningly praised all of his films. Thus, we thought it would be interesting to do an all-around ranking of his films (although we’ve left the animated Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole off the list). So, without further ado, here’s our ranking from worst to best.
Sucker Punch:
I’ll admit to not knowing precisely what Snyder was trying to pull off when I saw this movie in 2011. It remains the most obscure of his live-action films. It is a tough nut to crack, being that it’s a fantastical, hyper-surrealistic fantasy centred around a woman...

In the 90 years since his creation, Superman has had many different versions. There have been many to stand out from these, for good and bad reasons. Perhaps one of the most controversial has to be Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel, which is a darker version of the character. While many fans loved the fresher approach, there were many fundamental changes made that completely went against the character’s philosophy.

Henry Cavill may not be reprising his role as the Man of Steel anytime soon, but fans don’t need to burst into tears for him. The Hollywood Reporter discovered that the actor was paid a whopping $250,000 ‘each’ for his brief appearances in Black Adam and The Flash.
Yes, that’s what it is—a quarter of a million dollars for just a few minutes of screen time. Not bad for a day’s work, right? While some may feel sorry for Cavill for not getting the chance to star in James Gunn’s 2025 Superman release, it’s abundantly clear that the actor isn’t hurting for cash. Also, compared to Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot, the Immortals actor received a higher salary for his brief cameos in other DC flicks.

Cavill was a hot commodity at Warner Bros. Pictures before Gunn and Safran were named co-CEOs of DC Studios.

Superman is one of those superheroes who has always gained wide momentum among fans, becoming their favorite in the least time possible and continuing to rule their hearts through the indelible marks left behind by their stories. That being said, he has also earned multiple animated and live-action adaptations over the years, including the most recent one under James Gunn.
Superman. However, while all of those other animated projects gave the feeling of being like yet another cartoon show despite their outstanding storylines, this first animated series under Gunn’s reign as the co-ceo of the DC Universe, i.e. My Adventures with Superman, gave a different vibe. This was because it had the wildest idea for its core animation: Its main theme being anime-inspired!

Superman, the beloved Kryptonian superhero from the DC Universe, has been played by multiple actors over the years in numerous different adaptations — both good and not-so-good. And of all the talented masterminds who embodied him, the late Christopher Reeve and Henry Cavill are widely regarded as the best ones by far.
Superman in the comics. But oftentimes, Reeve’s performance is deemed even better than Cavill’s, and for reasons all too understandable. In fact, not only do fans of the late actor hold this opinion, but even the renowned Tim Daly, who voiced Clark Kent in the iconic award-winning Superman: The Animated Series, believes that Reeve’s Kal-El was “wonderful” for a reason that might not sit well with Cavill’s fans.

Superman director James Gunn made a video appearance during the Warner Bros panel for CinemaCon. While he didn’t have a lot to reveal just yet, he did tease that next year will be the “summer of Superman” as he revealed a closer look at the new logo, which seems reminiscent of the one from the Max Fleischer cartoons.

Both Batman and Superman were meant to inspire; one lived in the shadow of fear, the other in the light of hope. The two superheroes have similar goals in life: they want to thwart evil while leading separate lives in order to defend their city and its citizens. On what would be his 100th birthday, Marlon Brando remains synonymous not with acting, but great acting — even if this ranked list of all his performances represents what may be the most wildly uneven filmography for any talent of his caliber. But that’s the power of Brando: A handful of his performances are so great and influential they shook up the art of acting forever. Even among his lesser performances, there’s compelling work deserving of rediscovery.
In order to best exemplify what made him such a singular onscreen presence, we ranked all 39 of his films (and one TV appearance), reflecting a spectrum as wide as the man’s broad shoulders. Based on the quality of Brando’s performances rather than the overall films themselves, there are some placements that may surprise you; for example, as great as Brando is in “The Godfather,” it’s still just the fourth-best...

Recently, we had the chance to sit down with Michael Keaton and chat about his new movie, Knox Goes Away, which he also directs. Keaton is still out there promoting the film and recently ran down some of his best roles with GQ, including Batman. In the interview, which is really fascinating, Keaton remembers the controversy that surrounded his casting initially by director Tim Burton, which he calls a “ballsy move.”
For those who may not have been around in 1988, when Keaton’s casting was first announced, may fans hated him getting the role as his career up to that point had largely been focused on comedy roles. Indeed, he had many comedy hits in the 80s, including Night Shift, Johnny Dangerously, Gung Ho, The Dream Team, and Beetlejuice. In fact, it was his work on that last movie that directly led to his casting, as him and Burton had...

Three and a half decades post his initial portrayal, Michael Keaton unveils the narrative behind Tim Burton’s controversial decision to cast him as Batman ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
In a recent chat with GQ, Michael Keaton looked back on landing the role of Bruce Wayne in Tim Burton’s Batman flick, recognizing the initial uproar over his casting. Back in the late ’80s, fans weren’t sold on Keaton’s ability to pull off the iconic superhero, worried that his comedic background wouldn’t mesh with the dark character. Yet, Keaton has since earned acclaim as one of the top actors to don the Batman cape, proving Burton’s unconventional choice right. Keaton gave props to Burton for his gutsy call and shared some thoughts on his time filming the inaugural Batman film.

Marlon Brando gained a reputation in Hollywood through his method of acting. He famously leaned towards dramatics and creating tension, rather than delivering lines for the sake of it, becoming one of the most respected actors in the industry. His appearances in The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and On the Waterfront are only some excellent examples of his gift.

Wonder Woman is one character that has stayed constant throughout her several iterations. Serving as the equilibrium force of the Justice League, her character has become iconic for several different reasons. Being one of the first female superheroes to become prominent in mainstream media, she became a cultural icon for many. Filmmaker Steven Spielberg has helmed one too many masterpieces throughout his five and a half decades old star-studded career. And for one who brought the dinosaurs from the Jurassic Park novel series from Michael Crichton to life in one of the most remarkable ways possible, he once intended to make a film on the superhero Superman as well.

Henry Cavill has been regarded by many DC fans as the best Superman of the franchise. The character who was made iconic on screen by the legendary Christopher Reeve, was subsequently played by various actors until the British star was cast for a more edgy and raw version of the superhero by Zack Snyder in Man Of Steel.

Earlier this month, word came out that James Gunn and Peter Safran, the co-heads of Warner Bros.' DC Studios, have hired screenwriter Ana Nogueira to pen the script for a live-action Teen Titans film that will be set within their planned interconnected DC Universe of film, television, and video games. This experiment kicks off with an animated series called "Creature Commandos" sometime in 2024, but begins in earnest with James Gunn's newly-retitled "Superman" live-action feature film in the summer of 2025.
This "Teen Titans" film will likely follow the exploits of young heroes like Robin, Beast Boy, Cyborg, Raven, and Starfire, and whether or not it falls into Gunn and Safran's planned first chapter of the Dcu -- a collection of films and shows that fall under an umbrella they've titled "Gods and Monsters" -- remains to be seen. But fans of the acclaimed animated series might be surprised to learn that the iconic villain, Mr. Freeze, almost had a very different depiction than the one showed in the series.
While the episode featuring Freeze, Heart of Ice, went on to win an Emmy for Outstanding Writing, the initial plan for the character in Batman Beyond could have deviated from that well-established legacy.

Christopher Reeve was initially unsure about landing the role of Superman when he heard that Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman were going to appear in the movie. Since he was not as famous as these actors, he doubted his chances of getting the role. Working with Brando was a big deal at the time. One man is preparing for a “quite unbelievable” Oscars night, having found himself nominated three times this year in the same category.
Special effects supervisor Neil Corbould is up against himself twice over, after being recognised in the category for his work on three movies – Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One, The Creator and Napoleon.
Corbould has two previous Oscars to his name – for Gladiator and Gravity. He told the BBC that this year’s close-to-hand competition could be “the kiss of death,” and said:

Superman’s future looks considerably brighter as James Gunn prepares the new version of the DC Universe. Further, even Jack Quaid’s 2023 animated TV series My Adventures With Superman, featured the superhero as a heartfelt and charming one. To be specific, ever since the end of Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel era, the fan-favorite character has witnessed bright and positive days.
Jack Quaid as Hughie Campbell in The Boys
The grim and gritty Superman is now considered a thing of the past. With James Gunn promising to bring a more hopeful Kryptonian, Henry Cavill’s gritty version is now history. However, despite starring as the Last Son of Krypton in the PG-rated 2023 animated TV series, Jack Quaid offered his rare support to Cavill’s grim version of Kal-El. Although he preferred starring as the positive and proactive version, he has nothing against the darker versions of Superman.

James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy will not be out till 2025 but is already garnering a lot of hype. Evidently, there are high expectations on the DC head to deliver especially after the criticisms following Henry Cavill’s departure. But Gunn looks like he’s up and ready to face the challenge. While the main cast of Superman: Legacy is in place, a lot of nitty-gritties are still to be decided and revealed.
Christopher Reeve as Superman
One significant aspect of DC’s most celebrated hero is his famous suit. While Superman has been epitomized by the blue suit with the red trunks, Zack Snyder took a departure from this look and completely eliminated the trunks to go with a slick modern all-blue suit. Now, fans are hoping to see James Gunn go back to the original costume following a new sketch by an artist online that predicts this move.

The Dceu has faced its fair share of ups and downs lately. But one consistent point of praise has been the casting choices, particularly actors like Henry Cavill as Superman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman.

Anyways, James Gunn is now all set to change the whole universe. While his reboot sounds like a fresh idea, there is also a bittersweet feeling because they’re shaking up the cast.
Gunn and Peter Safran seem to have something new in the works, and it makes sense why they’re opting for younger actors like David Corenswet (as they provide longevity and potential for more movies in the future).
After his casting as Clark Kent/Superman in June 2023, new cast names were soon revealed, including Nicholas Hoult as the classic villain Lex Luthor. Most recently, the actor for Perry White has also been announced.
