One-hit-wonders are an unusual thing. There are endless examples of artists that create something monumental that blasts its way into the pop culture zeitgeist and temporarily enchants and captures our attention. Then as quickly as they came, they seem to disappear. That is the idea behind 1996’s That Thing You Do! Written, directed by, and starring Tom Hanks as Mr. White- a big-time record producer who’s just discovered his next big talent- a small-town Pennsylvania rock n’ roll band with the potential to be the next big thing.
Now this movie was released in 1996 (as was a former entry into our own The Best Movie You Never Saw) and was Tom Hanks’ writing and directorial debut. Honestly, this is quite the freshman effort from the talented showman. The movie centers around The Wonders (formely the One-Ders), a local band that is struggling to find a good drummer before...

Exclusive: Skye Townsend (Black Lady Sketch Show) has joined the cast of the CBS comedy The Neighborhood for Season 6 in a recurring role. The show returns with new episodes on February 12.
Townsend’s character Courtney is loosely based on Sarah Francis Jones, girlfriend of The Neighborhood star Marcel Spears, and her real-life experience going into labor at a Beyoncé Renaissance concert.
Courtney is described as very smart—she entered MIT at 16 and worked at Jpl before 21— very cool, very outgoing and with a great sense of humor. She worked with Marty (Spears) at Jpl and he’s recently hired her as an electrical engineer at The Fuse Box. A few months back, they hooked up and now Courtney is pregnant. She’s very upfront about the fact that she likes Marty, but she won’t marry him.
Additionally, Kevin Pollak will also return in Season 6 as Dave Johnson’s (Max Greenfield) father.

If the Film Independent Spirit Awards are famous for anything, it’s undoubtedly the vociferous championing of innovative emerging cinematic voices. If the Spirit Awards are famous for a second thing, it would perhaps be the show’s irreverent presentation—encompassing everything from our unlikely beachfront home to the show’s perverse embrace of abstract fashion choices, pet participation and (of course!) comedy. From Buck Henry’s early-day quips, to Kevin Pollak’s Miramax-era industry jibes, to the elaborate sketches, parodies and musical numbers of the modern era, at the Spirit Awards lulz are king.
So, with the host of the 2024 Spirit Awards confirmed and ready to be announced this Thursday, November 30 we thought it might be appropriate today to look back at some of our favorite gut-busting Spirit Awards comedy bits of yesteryear, from the occult blood sacrifice of Tiger Beat cutie-pies, to lesbian “glove lunch” cruising sessions, to a Canadian heavy metal invasion,...

When Hulu announced they were going to revive "Futurama" for a third time, the good news (everyone) was immediately chased by the bad news that actor John Dimaggio -- who plays Bender and numerous other characters on the show -- may not return. The actor explained in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) back in February 2022 that the studio didn't offer him enough money, but more than that, were seemingly dismissive -- in an unspecified way -- of the entire voice cast. This led to a month-long contract standoff wherein it looked like Dimaggio may actually quit the show and move on. This would have been unthinkable to "Futurama" fans, as Bender was one of the most important characters on the show, and having another actor -- no matter how good they were -- would seem like too large a change to accept.

That's right, folks. We are fast approaching the premiere of The Santa Clauses Season 2.
To celebrate, Disney+ has unveiled the trailer and key art for the six-part second chapter.

Even though we're not done with Halloween, Disney isn't wasting anytime digging back into the world of Santa Claus with a second season of the Disney+ original series "The Santa Clauses." Tim Allen is back as jolly old Saint Nick, and now he's focusing on turning all the happenings at the North Pole into a family business. Elizabeth Mitchell is still as supportive as ever as Mrs. Claus, Cal Calvin Claus (Austin Kane) is preparing to eventually become Santa Claus at some point with a little Santa training program, and Sandra Calvin Claus is helping out in the background by taking care of the reindeer and whatnot.
Of course, getting the North Pole in shape for Christmas isn't their biggest concern; there's trouble brewing in the form of another Santa Claus. Eric Stonestreet ("Modern Family") is playing Magnus Antas or The Mad Santa. Apparently, he thinks Scott Calvin's version...

The "Futurama" episode "Where No Fan Has Gone Before" introduced an interesting wrinkle to the universe. It seems that in the early 31st century, all of "Star Trek" had been banned, and one could be arrested merely for saying the words "Star Trek" in public. Fry (Billy West) mentions in a video store that the first six "Star Trek" movies average out to "pretty good." Everyone in the store immediately drops to the floor and Fry is quickly bundled out by his friends.
It seems that, in the future, "Star Trek" fandom had become so intense that it mushroomed into a full-blown religion all its own. In the years after its formation, the Trekkie religion quickly became violent, with various schisms forming within the church. Imagine old-school Trekkies getting into bitter arguments with the fans of "Star Trek: Discovery," but with gunplay. Fry, a closet Trekkie this whole time, is...

[The following story includes spoilers for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.]
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel may have come to a close on May 26, but the characters at the heart of the Emmy-winning series will stay with the castmembers who played them for much longer than that.
The final season of the show from Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino saw the characters at the heart of it accomplish satisfying arcs — from one of the leads going to jail for his ex-wife to two other characters running in between stand-still traffic on New York City’s Upper West Side to support their daughter.
Miriam “Midge” Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) and her father, Abe Weissman (Tony Shalhoub), have perhaps come further than most pairs in the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. They went from not understanding each other and not having much of a relationship in season one to realizing they’re a lot more like the other than either of them realized when the show kicked off.

That’s not to say we weren’t left with a burning question or two or…. Ok, we had nearly a dozen. Luckily, series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and fellow EP Daniel Palladino made themselves available to TVLine early Friday morning to field every last one of them.

Bargain, Carthago, Curduroy’ among big winners.
Norwegian political satire Power Play was named best series as the sixth annual Canneseries (April 14-19) came to a close on the Riveria.
The series from Norway’s Nrk was the last of the 10-strong competition titles to screen at the six-day event, but triumphed with the festival’s top prize in addition to the award for best music that jury member and The Police drummer Stewart Copeland called “downright revolutionary”.
Power Play is based on the true story of the bid to become prime minster by pro-abortion ecologist politician Gro Harlem Brundtland in the 1970’s and 1980’s.

Norwegian political satire “Power Play” proved unbeatable at Canneseries, just like its headstrong protagonist, picking up awards for best series and music.
The show, focusing on Norway’s first female Prime Minister, Gro Harlem Brundtland, and starting out in the 1970s, turned out to be a timely proposition, as noted by showrunner Johan Fasting, who co-wrote with Silje Storstein and Kristin Grue.
“It’s hard to persevere in politics, especially for women. We wanted to go behind the scenes of social democracy as well, see how it has dissolved and turned into what we have today. It felt like the right time to look at the mechanisms of power,” he told Variety earlier this week.
While the show delves into local politics, its youthful “punk” attitude and humor, which already drew early comparisons to the works of Armando Iannucci, seems to have paid off, seducing jurors Lior Raz, Zabou Breitman,...

New York City Mayor Eric Adams Friday signed a proclamation declaring April 14, 2023 The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Day, recognizing the Prime Video series for its positive impact on NYC and the iconic path blazed worldwide. The first three episodes of the fifth and final season drop today.
The series “showcases the beautiful streets of New York City, features a strong female lead character, and is the perfect example of how our city’s film and TV industry creates jobs, and generates economic activity,” Adams said, citing 185,000+ jobs and more than $82 billion in total economic output. “We are going to continue to work with studios and stakeholders, like Prime Video, to ensure New York City is made available to them for their production needs.”
Over seven years, the show has employed over 37,000 actors and craftspeople, including 344 dancers, 580 musicians, 981 day players and 35,619 background actors. Based at Steiner Studios, it uses the city as its set,...

When “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” emerged in 2017 as a pilot for Amazon’s Prime Video, I wrote it was a look at “neurosis, nutty family dynamics, comedy laced with heartache — my new favorite show. I would binge watch the series right now — but there’s only the pilot!”
Now, as we welcome the show’s fifth and final season, which premieres Friday, April 14, I’m carrying a lot of baggage, all matched and color-coordinated.
What can you say about Rachel Brosnahan’s breakout standup Miriam “Midge” Maisel and creator Amy Sherman-Palladino? They got it right — and then some, with 20 Emmys and 66 nominations to back up their success.

“Sweetwater” is a biopic about Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton, the Black power forward who broke the color barrier of the NBA in 1950, three years after Jackie Robinson accomplished the same feat in baseball. It’s telling that Robinson remains one of the most celebrated heroes in sports history, while Clifton is still a somewhat obscure figure.
There’s a biting irony to that contrast. It relates to how the integration of basketball totally changed the game, even more than the integration of baseball changed baseball. “Sweetwater,” written and directed by Martin Guigui, is a straight-down-the-middle inspirational sports movie — and, one regrets to say, a kind of benign sketchbook version of the form. Yet it also tells the tale of the Harlem Globetrotters, the fabled team of barnstorming trickster prodigies who Clifton started off as a member of. This episode of The Black Sheep was Written, Narrated, and Edited by Lance Vlcek, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
I’ll always have a soft spot for the horror of the late ’90s. It wasn’t the best of the decade, but it does contain that silly and ambitious mix of dark edginess and psychological tension. Coming somewhat from the boom of the ’90s type of thriller, the religious horror resurgence came out of changing tastes. And though it didn’t all work out, there was a style and tone that I’ll always love. So what happens when an action superstar tries to grow while the genre around him changes into a different beast? You get the ridiculous but damn fun End of Days (watch it Here) on this episode of The Black Sheep.

“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” is performing her last set this spring. On Monday, Amazon Prime Video released the trailer for the fifth and final season of the Emmy-winning dramedy about comedy, which premieres in April.
In Season 5, Midge Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) is trying to book a spot on “The Gordon Ford Show,” a late-night talk show. If she nails “Gordon Ford,” she will become a big star. But it’s not easy. To paraphrase the official Season 5 synopsis, Midge is closer than ever to the success she desires but closer than ever is still so far away.
The storyline appears to be inspired by Joan Rivers’ legendary appearance on “The Tonight Show” in 1965. After seven auditions, Rivers finally landed a spot, and she did so well that Johnny Carson told her, “You’re gonna be a star.” After that, she was.

It all comes down to this, Marvelous Mrs. Maisel fanatics!
Prime Video on Monday dropped the official trailer for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 5, and it looks like Midge's quest for stardom is in focus.
"Midge finds herself closer than ever to the success she's dreamed of, only to discover that closer than ever is still so far away," the official logline warns.
With nine episodes remaining, there's a good chance the final season could begin with Midge getting closer than ever to her dreams, only to realize there is far more work ahead.
The first-look photos also confirm that Luke Kirby will be back.
After spending a season as a series regular, he is set to be back as a recurring guest star.
It's unclear whether this decision was made for storytelling purposes or if the actor had other commitments.
