A new episode of The Black Sheep video series has arrived online this morning, and with this one we’re looking back at one of the most fascinating “doomed productions” ever, the 1996 version of The Island of Dr. Moreau. (Watch the movie Here.) To find out why we think this one deserves more love than it gets, check out the video embedded above!
Based on an 1896 novel by H.G. Wells, the film was originally going to be directed by Richard Stanley, who was becoming a popular name in the horror genre at the time. Unfortunately, the production was a mess from the moment the cast and crew arrived on set. Stanley was fired, cast members quit, co-stars Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer exhibited strange behavior while dealing with tragedy and heartbreak. John Frankenheimer was brought on to replace Stanley at the helm, but he couldn’t save the sinking ship…...

After beaching off Ken in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and highlighting the hard work of stunt performers in David Leitch’s The Fall Guy, Sony is capitalizing on the “Gosling-ssance” with the release of his 2011 thriller Drive on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. The brutal film from Nicolas Winding Refn drips with style, presents Gosling in one of his most iconic roles, and is due for a comeback in crisp, clean, high definition.
Here’s Sony‘s official synopsis for Drive:
Ryan Gosling stars as a Hollywood stunt driver for movies by day and moonlights as a wheelman for criminals by night. Though a loner by nature, “Driver” can’t help falling in love with his beautiful neighbor Irene (Carey Mulligan), a young mother dragged into a dangerous underworld by the return of her ex-convict husband. After a heist goes wrong, Driver finds himself driving defense for the girl he loves,...

“The primary thing when I talked to Donald Glover at the start of this was, he said that the show is about trust,” reveals”Mr. and Mrs. Smith” composer David Fleming. For our recent webchat he adds, “trusting your professional partner, trusting your romantic partner; it really was trying to tell those two stories, of their relationship as spies and their blossoming romance as one story and the music had to serve both purposes.” We talked with Fleming as part of Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&a event with 2024 awards contenders. Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Ari Emanuel tonight left no ambiguity of what he thinks about Benjamin Netanyahu.
Speaking at the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s National Tribute Gala, where he was awarded its Humanitarian Prize, the Endeavor CEO blasted the Israeli prime minister, saying, “The time for Bibi Netanyahu to go has come.”
“This is a painful and crucial moment for all of us who are Jews. It is not a time to stay silent,” Emanuel said to the packed Beverly Wilshire ballroom. Among the high-powered audience at the Beverly Hills hotel on Wednesday were Larry David, Amazon Prime Video boss Jennifer Salke and spouse Bert Salke, Jeffery and Marilyn Katzenberg, powerhouse attorney Patty Glaser and husband Sam, WME co-chairs Christian Muirhead and Richard Weitz, and producer Brian Grazer. As well, a number of Holocaust survivors and those who lived through the fatal terror of Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israeli border towns and army bases.

Glen Powell arrives at lunch through a back door toting a container of bone broth he isn’t eager to look at, much less consume. He’s more a “chicken-fried-steak-in-Austin kind of a guy,” he insists, but he’s signed on to star in an A24 revenge thriller and he’s supposed to drop 15 pounds in a matter of weeks. It means he won’t be ordering the midday margarita that Ron Perlman is nursing at the next table. Reluctantly, Powell requests a green juice.
“I’ve almost given up on this diet, like, three times,” he says, flashing a familiar smile. “I’m like, ‘Can’t we just change the character?’ “
Glen Powell was photographed March 26 at the Harvard House Motel in Los Angeles.
But Powell’s not one to give up on anything, so he hands over the broth. The restaurant’s going to store it for him,...

Apple TV+ has debuted a set of first-look images from filmmaker Doug Liman’s ‘The Instigators’.
Rory (Matt Damon) and Cobby (Casey Affleck) are reluctant partners: a desperate father and an ex-con thrown together to pull off a robbery of the ill-gained earnings of a corrupt politician. But when the heist goes wrong, the two find themselves engulfed in a whirlwind of chaos, pursued not only by police but also backwards bureaucrats and vengeful crime bosses. Hellboy: The Crooked Man has been accused of using generative AI to design its creatures. It hasn’t (but another demon film has).
Feature image: Ron Perlman as Hellboy in Guillermo Del Toro’s Hellboy, which emphatically didn’t use generative AI.
Update: A previous version of this article was written before the film’s director issued his clarification, in which he stated that producer Jonathan Yunger’s comments were incorrectly attributed to Hellboy: The Crooked Man.
The use of AI is perhaps the most hotly debated subject in the arts today. Only a few weeks ago, we reported that AI was used in Late Night With The Devil to create the inserts seen in the film that follows David Dastmalchian’s talk show host chatting to an actual demon. Many took to social media to condemn the film’s use of it, arguing it took jobs away from real artists.

There has been a constant battle of human vs AI in art as the technology now seems to be tempting to many artists. Sure, sometimes, AI does marvel bringing out the acute wonders our minds can imagine with prompts. But how can prompts be an art form? Fans now question Millennium Films’ President’ justification as he openly admitted using AI in the new Hellboy film.

Considering that the first game in the series was released in 1997, Fallout has always had a layered lore since its inception. From vibrant characters to the details that make the dystopian world come to life, there are many aspects to go through to understand what the universe has to offer. Which have been developed over years, so expecting the Prime Video show’s creator, Jonah Nolan, to fit everything into one season wouldn’t have been fair.
Why Prime Video’s Fallout Didn’t Feature an Important Cameo

There’s a lot of content that executive producer Jonah Nolan tried to cover in the first season of Prime Video’s take on the game universe, and for the most part, he succeeds with the help of clever Easter eggs and world-building that...

Since 1980, horror and sci fi fans have loved being scared by the Xenomorph and the soulless Weyland-Yutani corporation that wants to study it. Nearly everyone has controversial takes on various films in the franchise: "Prometheus" and Assembly Cut "Alien 3" fans, rise up. "Alien: Covenant" fans, look... we respect you, but that movie makes it tough. But no matter where you land, we're all in love with Ridley Scott's original "Alien." It's a love that's seen high school performances turn into breakout hits, and April 26th (chosen for the Lv-426 colony in "Aliens") become a fandom holiday.
We're always looking for more to explore from the franchise, although sometimes that desire turns into a be-careful-what-you-wish-for "Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem" situation. Despite the valleys of the "Alien" franchise, we're still hoping for the best from the upcoming "Alien: Romulus" and Noah Hawley's forthcoming TV series from FX. Meanwhile, we...

Blackout is the third film in Fessenden’s monster trilogy, following Habit (vampires) and Depraved (Frankenstein). Watch a clip below for a sneak peek at his latest monster!
The film follows small town artist Charley (Alex Hurt), a tortured man whose drinking binges blur with his sneaking suspicion that he might likely be a werewolf. He distances himself from those he loves and sinks deeper into solitude, his flashes of memory of his nighttime grisly acts manifested through his artwork.
Fessenden tells us, “I am interested in finding new truths in the classic monster tropes of my youth. The essence of each creature dictates the milieu of the film, and of course, the werewolf is both out of control and regretful so that duality shaped my story.

Image created by “Shutterstock.AI” Ron Perlman kicked off the early ’90s as a monstrous character thanks to his Golden Globe-winning turn as Vincent in Beauty and the Beast. But little did he know, a visionary director named Guillermo del Toro had a different monstrous role in mind — one that would break him out of that typecast. As Perlman would reveal years later at GalaxyCon Columbus 2023, the road to becoming Hellboy was one paved with both luck and del Toro’s fierce determination. It wasn’t until I started writing this article that I remembered something. A new Hellboy movie, titled Hellboy: The Crooked Man, is coming soon, likely to see release sometime this year.
Ketchup Entertainment acquired the rights last year to Millennium Media’s reboot, which will star Jack Kesy in the title role. But we’ll report more on that project in the coming months.
In the meantime, Deadline has announced today that a documentary on Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, titled Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters, is also coming soon.
Deadline reports that Nacelle (“The Toys That Made Us”) has acquired the doc, with no release date announced at this time. When Mr. & Mrs. Smith was announced as a TV series for Prime Video in 2021, there were plenty of reasons to be skeptical about the project.
It was based on a movie of the same name that did reasonably well but isn't especially well-remembered.
The announced starring duo of Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge was intriguing, especially considering that both performers were credited as creators.
Both had a history of starring in and creating successful series, including Glover with Atlanta and Waller-Bridge with Fleabag. Plus, Waller-Bridge served as the showrunner in the first season of Killing Eve, another prestige series about an assassin.
But then Waller-Bridge dropped out of the project just a few months after it was announced due to "creative differences," with Maya Erskine replacing her as the show's female lead. Glover and Francesca Sloane are credited as the co-creators.
Beyond that, the series had its premiere delayed repeatedly,...

Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter is going from the fictional town of Charming to the plains of Oregon for his next ambitious series, The Abandons. The forthcoming Netflix Western adds six cast members to its roster today, with Lucas Till, Diana Silvers, Lamar Johnson, Aisling Franciosi, and Natalia del Riego.
Created and executive produced by Kurt Sutter, The Abdandons “follows a group of diverse, outlier families pursuing their Manifest Destiny in 1850s Oregon, as a corrupt force of wealth and power, coveting their land, tries to force them out. These abandoned souls, the kind of lost souls living on the fringe of society, unite their tribes to form a family and fight back. For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit Showtime’s “Masters of Horror,” which was created by Mick Garris and aired for two seasons between 2005 and 2007.
It seemed like a horror fan’s wet dream: a horror anthology series with some of the greatest horror filmmakers of all time lensing short format horror films for premium cable. Although horror icons had teamed in the past to bring us series like “Tales from the Darkside” and “Tales from the Crypt,” there wasn’t a modern series that brought them all together to have a chance to tell their stories in the anthology format. “Masters of Horror” seemed like a prime opportunity to re-invent the waning anthology horror format, and while it didn’t quite re-invent the wheel as planned, it brought with it a lot of great content from some bonafide horror icons.

Larry Fessenden (Habit, Depraved) is back with new werewolf horror movie Blackout, and the official trailer has been unleashed today along with release information.
Dark Sky Films will first bring the modern day werewolf movie to theaters in NYC on March 13, followed by a wider release on Digital/VOD at home on April 12, 2024.
The film’s one week exclusive NYC theatrical engagement will take place at the IFC Center beginning March 13th, and it will feature special cast appearances and a Q&a.
Blackout marks the second pairing of Glass Eye Pix, the New York production shingle headed by Fessenden, and Yellow Veil Pictures, having previously collaborated successfully on world sales for Fessenden’s 2019 Depraved, which was released by IFC Midnight in the US.
The film follows small town artist Charley (Alex Hurt), a tortured man whose drinking binges blur with his sneaking suspicion that he might likely be a werewolf.

How does one repay a team of producers for launching its highest grossing film of all time? Give them the key to the studio — literally.
On Monday, “Barbie” producers, LuckyChap’s Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara inked a first-look deal at Warner Bros., which distributed the $1.4 billion-grossing movie. So, to celebrate, Warner Bros. Pictures Group Co-Chairs and CEO Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca decided to resurrect an old tradition, started by WB co-founder Jack Warner.
“Every once in a while, when a significant piece of talent signed a deal with the studio, he presented that company, that talent, with a key to the studio,” De Luca said as he and Abdy raised a toast to the trio. “We are so delighted to have our first key to our studio be given to LuckyChap.”

One cannot understate the strange cultural dominance Hugh Wilson's 1984 comedy "Police Academy" held over the pop zeitgeist throughout the 1980s. Clearly a child of "Animal House," "Police Academy" was a traditional snobs-vs.-slobs comedy that pitted winking wiseacres against their stern commanding officers at a police school in an unnamed city. I've long had a theory that the "Police Academy" movies take place in Metropolis, the city where Superman lives. With Superman taking care of major crimes, the local police force would likely become complacent, unused to enforcing the law.
None of the "Police Academy" movies were well-reviewed, recognized by critics as crass, dumb, and low-brow. This is a series that banks on misogyny, offensive stereotypes, and a lot of crotch/sex humor. There is no wit to the "Police Academy" movies. Roger Ebert famously gave the first film zero stars, citing merely how dreadfully unfunny and uninspired it is.

Exclusive: Mr. & Mrs. Smith is off to a promising start at Amazon.
The eight-episode series debuted on February 2 to become the No. 1 series on Prime Video in more than 130 countries. It is now one of the Top 5 new series debuts ever for Amazon in terms of total viewers in the U.S.
Amazon, as is typical, remains tight-lipped about the exact viewership data. Next month, there will likely be more numbers available via Nielsen’s streaming charts.
It is also noteworthy that Amazon is specifically touting U.S. viewership, since that is the audience that Nielsen measures. In the past, the streamer has often opted to promote global viewership, which is much harder to quantify without proprietary data from the company itself.
Because of this, it’s expected that the series will make an appearance on those charts, especially because all eight episodes were released at once, which gives it...

Alien and Aliens are two of the most highly respected and beloved sci-fi horror films ever made… and all of the films that have followed have either been divisive in one way or another, or just flat-out poorly received. One of the least popular entries in the franchise is the 1997 installment Alien: Resurrection (watch it Here), which put some fans off with its wild and weird tone and its crazy ideas. Decades down the line, Alien: Resurrection director Jean-Pierre Jeunet is currently doing the press rounds to promote a theatrical re-release of his very popular 2001 romantic comedy Amélie, and JoBlo’s own Tyler Nichols took the opportunity to ask him about the making of his Alien sequel. Here’s how it went:
Tyler Nichols: I’m also a big horror fan, so I have to ask you about your work on Alien: Resurrection. Because I still think of the underwater...

Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” on Amazon Prime. Courtesy of Amazon Prime.
Donald Glover is a multi-talented young man. Proof lies in his boatload of awards and nominations for acting, writing, directing, producing and in several aspects of the music biz. Further proof lies in his having enough clout to attract a slew of stars for mostly brief appearances in this eight-episode action comedy. Alas, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” is not his best work as co-writer or co-star.
Glover plays a guy recruited by an unspecified secret agency to pose as half of a normal, bland couple while remaining perpetually on call for any kind of covert op, from protection to swiping documents to whacking designated baddies. The “wife” they picked for him (Maya Erskine) shares all the assignments while helping to maintain their cover. As is par for such courses, they don’t like each other until they do.

Plot: Two lonely strangers land jobs working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travel, and a dream brownstone in Manhattan. The catch? New identities in an arranged marriage as Mr. and Mrs. John and Jane Smith. Now hitched, John and Jane navigate a high-risk mission every week while also facing a new relationship milestone. Their complex cover story becomes even more complicated when they catch real feelings for each other. What’s riskier: espionage or marriage?

Playing a long-married couple in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Parker Posey and Wagner Moura are twinned forces of nature. They’re weird, they’re obnoxious, they’re so cheerful they’re borderline terrifying, and so obviously wild about each other they’re almost endearing. Whenever they’re onscreen, the entire show seems to sit up and hold its breath, eagerly aware that anything might happen in their presence.
Alas, they’re also guest stars. The couple actually at the center of the Prime Video comedy are the rather more sedate John (Donald Glover) and Jane (Maya Erskine). Mr. & Mrs. Smith has its delights, with a plot that sends the duo on glamorous top-secret missions to one picturesque location after another. But it’s all built on the wobbly foundation of a romance that’s more interesting in theory than in practice.

At one point in Amazon’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith, John and Jane Smith (Donald Glover and Maya Erskine) become infatuated with another couple. Like them, the pair are part of an espionage program in which agents operate undercover as a married couple. Only these other Smiths seem so much more experienced and self-assured. There’s a movie-star swagger to them as they talk casually about the level of danger they’ve faced and their flawless mission record. It’s enough to make John and Jane, relative newbies in the field, feel inadequate.
Glover and Francesca Sloane might have felt a similar insecurity when they were asked to create a series based on Doug Liman’s 2005 box office hit starring two of the biggest movie stars on the planet, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, whose real-life love affair only ensured the film’s pop-cultural impact. When you talk about John Sayles, do you talk about America? Watching and examining his beautiful tapestry of films, this reveals itself an easy question to ask and an easy question to answer. There may be no single filmmaker who has better captured the agony and ecstasy of the American experiment than Sayles. Yet his pictures never feel like homework. They’re funny, heartbreaking, and full of characters that are well-rounded and sharply drawn.
The Film Stage got the opportunity to speak with Sayles about his 1996 masterpiece Lone Star (now available on 4K and Blu-ray courtesy of the Criterion Collection), as well lesser-seen gems like Limbo, Go for Sisters, and Amigo.

Traditionally, the concept of "the monster under the bed" is seen as a universal childhood fear, the most prominent example of our collective primal fear of the dark. For boys and young men, this mythical creature is typically seen as something to conquer, to stand up to. As fantasy, horror, and genre fiction continue to mutate into phases of postmodernism, this trope has expanded, where the monster isn't necessarily a threat to be subdued but rather a secret, special friend.
But what does this creature signify for girls and young women? If the horrific version represents the encroaching world of the patriarchy, might a cuddlier version see such a creature take the form of a confidant, companion, and protector? Where would he (assuming they're male) fit amongst the horror movie trope of survivor women being "paired" with their supernatural counterpart — is there something between "La Belle et la Bête" and...

The adventures of Conan the Barbarian are not, in their purest form, for children. Created by pulp author Robert E. Howard in 1932, the Cimmerian warrior inhabits a cruel world ruled by those who are handiest with a sword or endowed with the power of sorcery. Though Conan is uncommonly chivalric, he is utterly ruthless in combat — and Howard's battle scenes are described in invigoratingly vicious detail. There are impalements and beheadings and wholesale eviscerations. There are also orgies and elements of bondage. But the presence of wizards and dragons and all kinds of nasty monsters means Conan's tales are catnip for kids.
There have been efforts to tone down the sex and violence of Conan's tales, but they are essential to his appeal. Howard wrote with a boundless fury; he roared and raged as he bashed away at his typewriter. The savagery is the point. If you want sanitized, kid-friendly fantasy,...

Plot: A young address (Melissa Barrera) ends up being dumped by her louse of a boyfriend while battling cancer. In her recovery, she also learns that he gave away a role he promised her in his upcoming Broadway debut. Heartbroken, she finds solace in an unlikely figure – the monster under her bed who tormented her as a child.
Review: Your Monster is a terrific showcase for Melissa Barrera. While audiences only know her for being a classic “Final Girl” in the new Scream movies, from which she was unceremoniously dumped, according to her bio, she’s a classic theatre kid. In this movie, Barrera displays a flair for light comedy and shows off her impressive singing voice, with the film being a quasi-musical/ rom-com hybrid with some (light) horror elements mixed in.

If Ann Landers had it right, and hanging on to resentment amounts to letting someone you despise live rent-free in your head, then “Your Monster” is what happens when you kick open the door and let those feelings run amok. Drawing from personal experience, writer-director Caroline Lindy delivers a clumsy metaphor of a movie, in which a promising young actor named Laura Franco (“In the Heights” star Melissa Barrera) has her Broadway dreams derailed by a cancer diagnosis, only to discover a ferocious inner strength, courtesy of the beastly creature she finds hanging around her childhood home.
In what amounts to a heavy-handed empowerment tale, the monster in question is at first a surly roommate, later a potential love interest and ultimately a manifestation of Laura’s long-suppressed sense of rage. The symbolism isn’t exactly subtle as Laura learns to break free of her polite good-girl upbringing and embrace those roiling emotions.

The new trailer for Amazon’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith has arrived just ahead of the series debut early next month. The series puts several twists on the formula. Firstly, the Doug Liman movie that the series is based on, which starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, had more of a True Lies-esque plot where a seemingly mundane suburban married couple discover that they both are secret agents and work for rival agencies. Secondly, the two leads — Donald Glover and Maya Erskine — are normally known primarily for comedic roles and are dabbling in more action-oriented fare this time around.
The official synopsis from Amazon reads,
“Two lonely strangers land jobs working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travel,...
