There are a lot of great moments in Steven Spielberg's 1981 action-adventure film "Raiders of the Lost Ark," but nothing quite comes close to the film's intense climax. After following archaeologist Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) and feisty bar owner Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen) on their journey to try and stop the Nazis from stealing a biblical artifact, said Nazis actually manage to open the artifact — the Ark of the Covenant, the holy box that once held the Tablets of the Law, which contained the ten commandments passed down to Moses by God in the old testament. They open the box to try and get a peek at what's inside, only to have their Nazi faces melted right off like a bunch of action figures hit with a blowtorch. It's one of the most satisfying moments in cinema history, but according to Spielberg, it was also pretty much done by the seat of his pants.

We have discussed killers that received slasher movies, folklore turned cannibalism, and plenty of possession via person, home, or even object. What we haven’t done too much of is the good old-fashioned cult. While we took a deep dive into Jim Jones and the tragedy of Jonestown paired with the very well-done Sacrament, there are a ton of real-life cults and cult leaders that have been put to celluloid in an attempt to both cash in and tell a compelling story. I mean, I’m writing this right now on the couch while my wife watches a documentary about a cult on Netflix. True crime and religious cult stuff exist in popular forms like podcasts, shows, and of course movies too. Today we will look at two things that don’t get a lot of widespread attention. The 2007 horror movie Borderland (watch it Here) and what it is loosely...

Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny’s Financial Report Reveals How Much Loss It Suffered After Almost A Year Of The Film’s Release ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Harrison Ford led Indiana Jones, and the Dial of Destiny was reportedly the last installment in the Indiana Jones franchise, the sequel to 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. There are five films in the franchise, and it has grossed over $2 billion at the worldwide box office. However, as per recent reports, the last movie suffered a massive loss at the box office. Scroll below for more.
The first film in this series was released in 1981, and Harrison Ford became a legend portraying the iconic character. He was de-aged for the fifth installment, and it reportedly took over 100 artists at the Industrial Light and Magic to achieve the task. They spent three years on the movie’s visual effects.

Exclusive: Talent agency Kmr Talent is grappling with a “talent payment breakdown,” a set of logistical and staffing issues that have resulted in late payments to clients, owner and President Mark Measures tells Deadline.
The revelation come following outreach to Deadline on the part of multiple talent reps, who say money owed to clients is now several months late. The situation triggered a wave of rumors that the agency may be going under.
Highlighting banking issues, the crashing of a database involved with payment, and the loss of the agency’s Head of Talent Payment as factors behind issues with pay-out, Measures stressed that the agency is actively “working [its] way out” of the situation, in dialogue with talent payment companies, as well as talent reps and unions.

Being a relatively unknown actor in the 1980s, Harrison Ford found fame through his breakthrough role as Indiana Jones. Starring alongside Karen Allen and working with veteran director Steven Spielberg, Ford had quite a good run as Jones.
To put the cherry on top, the film’s music was composed by none other than legendary film score composer John Williams. Harrison Ford revealed that the music is so iconic that he heard it even in a hospital!

Netflix comedy movies in March 2024 cover every subgenre in the category. Whether you’re looking to stream slapstick, a rom-com, or something with a side of horror, Netflix’s March additions have something for you.
While any time is a good time to watch a comedy, springtime and laughs can go hand-in-hand. With warmer weather (and summer blockbusters) around the corner, spend your March with Netflix’s best comedy movies.
‘Beverly Hills Ninja’ Coming to Netflix March 1
Celebrate comedy legend Chris Farley by streaming Beverly Hills Ninja on Netflix beginning March 1. The 1997 martial arts comedy marks the final film released during Farley’s lifetime, as the actor died less than a year after its release.
Farley stars as Haru, adopted as a child by a clan of ninjas who believe he’ll become the master promised in legends. As expected, Haru never entirely becomes a ninja despite his best efforts.

Steven Spielberg and George Lucas’ summer in Hawaii circa 1977 might just be among the most fortuitous vacays in movie history. One of the Hollywood young gun directors was dejected during this holiday because he’d just been passed over to helm the next James Bond picture; the other was anxious about his new film opening that weekend—a little flick you might have heard of called Star Wars. Neither was entirely certain what he’d do next, but the pair got to talking about an idea Lucas had been kicking around for years. It would be inspired by all the B-serials they grew up watching; it would be way cooler than 007; and it starred a guy named Smith, Indiana Smith.
The concept was almost there, clearly, yet it would take both filmmakers, plus a legion of collaborators, to turn Indiana Jones into the cinema legend he is today. And a legend he is,...

As the mixed critical response and lackluster box office for "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" emphatically proves, they simply don't make 'em like "Raiders of the Lost Ark" anymore.
When Roger Ebert reviewed Steven Spielberg's action-adventure classic back in 1981, he opined that it played like "an anthology of the best parts from all the Saturday matinee serials ever made." As it happens, that was pretty much George Lucas' idea when he dreamt up Indiana Jones in the first place — and what an idea it was. The Indiana Jones franchise has since become one of the biggest blockbuster sagas in cinema history, with Dr. Henry Jones Jr. himself ascending to the status of pop culture icon in the process.
While 1984's "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" has its defenders, and many fans of the series will swear 1989's "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" is just as good as "Raiders,...

It's one of the most defining moments of the character of Indiana Jones, and the most key moment in terms of the tone of 1981's "Raiders of the Lost Ark" is when confronted by a master swordsman in the streets of Cairo, Indy (played with a mixture of Bogart-like weariness and gumption by Harrison Ford) makes a snap decision not to engage the brute in a lengthy and (likely) ill-fated physical bout. Instead, he merely pulls his revolver from its holster and shoots the swordsman point blank, allowing him to quickly continue the search for his missing partner, Marion (Karen Allen).
As has become a thing of "Raiders" legend by now, this altercation was not originally scripted in this manner. In fact, it was the result of several factors, most notably director Steven Spielberg wishing to hurry his production schedule along and Ford, suffering from a gross illness at the time,...

In 1843, London publishers Chapman & Hall released A Christmas Carol. Written by Charles Dickens and illustrated by John Leech, it was inspired in part by Dickens’s anger at inequality in his country, especially as it affected children. Despite its aversion to the upper classes, A Christmas Carol was an immediate hit among readers and critics. Given the book’s popularity, it’s no surprise that movie makers have picked up on the story many times. Between its clear redemption arc and ghostly premise, the story has everything that a good movie needs.
Still, not every adaptation of A Christmas Carol is created equal. So if you’re looking for the best of the worst man in film and literature, check out these ten great movies. And if you don’t like my picks, well, bah humbug I say.

The gifts don’t stop in December at Disney+! In addition to holiday festivities all month long like the Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Parade and the CMA Country Christmas Special, the House of Mouse streamer will soon become the home for Whovians and Demigods.
Disney+ will deck the halls with a glut of Gallifreyan adventures and the premiere of the long-awaited “Doctor Who” anniversary specials. The first of the three debuted on BBC One and on the Disney streamer on Nov. 25, but the other two David Tennant and Catherine Tate-led serials will arrive on Dec. 2 and Dec. 9. Later in the month, ring in Christmas with the franchise’s holiday special with Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson getting their full-episode debuts.
And the wait is over for “Percy Jackson” fans, who will see the beloved Rick Riordan book series get a (hopefully) respectful adaptation with the premiere of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

Fifteen years before Indy turns the Dial of Destiny, the unflinching archaeologist embarks on the most contentious mission of his fabled career to recover a telepathic crystal skull before a squad of Kgb agents, led by Cate Blanchett’s Irina Spalko, can use the jeweled remains to unlock the secrets of mind-controlling knowledge. Lucasfilm has announced that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will stream exclusively on Disney+ starting on December 1st, 2023. On the same day, they’ll also debut Timeless Heroes, a feature-length documentary about how everyone’s favorite bullwhip-wielding archaeologist in cinema came to be.
The fifth and final installment in the franchise, Dial of Destiny stars Harrison Ford — who did his own stunts, mind you — as the titular hero, and featured a surprise cameo from fan-favorite Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood. It also boasts notable newcomers Phoebe Waller-Bridge as his goddaughter Helena Shaw and Mads Mikkelsen as a former Nazi scientist. The cast is rounded out by Boyd Holbrook, Antonio Banderas, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Thomas Kretschmann, Toby Jones, Oliver Richters, and Ethann Isidore.
Directed by veteran documentary maker Laurent Bouzereau, Timeless Heroes focuses largely on Ford’s undeniable charm, and how his upbringing and early career led him to become the perfect Indy.

While looking for a project to follow the success of his films The French Connection and The Exorcist, director William Friedkin came across a book he found to be fascinating: Cruising by Gerald Walker, about “a series of murders in the gay bars of New York, and a detective assigned to go undercover to find the killer”. But Friedkin had already made a movie that centered on gay characters, The Boys in the Band, so he let the Cruising adaptation go by. For a while, Steven Spielberg was attached to direct the film, but wasn’t able to get it into production. In his memoir The Friedkin Connection, Friedkin revealed that it wasn’t until someone he worked with on The Exorcist turned out to be a real-life serial killer that he thought of the way to approach Cruising.

"Raiders of the Lost Ark" isn't just the best Indiana Jones movie, it also looks the best of all the films. 1981's inaugural Indy outing is visually stunning thanks to cinematographer Douglas Slocombe's shot composition and lighting. It's even more impressive how good "Raiders" looks when you consider that director Steven Spielberg was in a bit of a hurry to get his shots in the can.
Writing in American Cinematographer, the esteemed filmmaker revealed how the $20 million budget provided by Paramount Pictures would "pay for 87 days of shooting," but that he had a whole other, 73-day schedule worked out. It was all so that Spielberg could, in his words, "make 'Raiders' economically and make it look like $40 million and, in fact, spend only $20 million."
As a result, "Raiders" had Spielberg doing things he swore he'd never do again, like having Harrison Ford race a 300-pound boulder for the film's famous opening sequence — multiple times.

This article contains spoilers for "Ahsoka" episode 4, "Fallen Jedi."
The fourth installment of "Star Wars: Ahsoka," titled "Fallen Jedi", pulls no punches when it comes to having the situation go from bad to worse. As the forces of evil led by the descendent of the Witches of Dathomir, Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto), and fallen Jedi Baylan Skoll (Ray Stevenson) work to extract the information from the map to find Grand Admiral Thrawn (the still unseen Lars Mikkelsen), Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) and Sabine (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) work to repair their ship. After it got shot down last episode, they need to get it back in the air or retrieve the map personally. While Huyang (David Tennant) attempts repairs, Ahsoka and Sabine take to the forest. They're stopped by Shin Hati (Ivanna Sakhno) and Marrok (Paul Darnell), who engage them in an intense fight in the woods. Though Huyang warned Ahsoka and Sabine to stay together,...

When James Mangold took the adventuring archaeologist reins from Steven Spielberg on "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," fans were wary for a couple of reasons. One was the simple fact that, aside from ABC's "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles," Spielberg was the series' sole director. As the "Jaws" sequels and the "Jurassic World" series proved, no one can match The Beard when it comes to terrifying and elating audiences, sometimes in the same scene. The other fear had to do with legacy. When Harrison Ford announced at September 2022's D23 expo that this was his last go-round in the fedora ("I'm not falling down for you again"), we took him at his word. He turned 81 this year, and has incurred all manner of injuries via stunts and aviation mishaps.

Sometimes a title of a movie is everything. It's hard to imagine that "Blade Runner" or "Die Hard" would have become as recognizably famous as they are now without their filmmakers co-opting those snazzy titles. One filmmaker who's consistently chosen distinct, eye-grabbing titles for his films is Steven Spielberg. There are the to-the-point emotional titles, the mysterious and intriguing ones, and the descriptive ones.
Upon watching the movie, the title "Raiders of the Lost Ark" falls neatly into this latter category. Yet for people new to the adventures of the original character Indiana Jones back in 1981, it must've seemed not just mysterious, but borderline confusing. Who are these "raiders?" What is this "lost ark?" And why are they raiding it at all?
That's precisely the take on the title one of the cast members of "Raiders" had when they first heard it. This actor was no supporting player, either: it was Karen Allen,...

One of the most touching moments I've seen in a movie this year arrived at the end of "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," when Karen Allen's Marion Ravenwood returns to help nurse our badly beat-up hero back into shape. We learn earlier in the movie that the source of their estrangement was the death of their son Mutt (Shia Labeouf), who settled a dispute with his headstrong father by enlisting in Vietnam. Indy blamed himself for Mutt's demise and took to the bottle. Unwilling to watch her husband drink himself to death, Marion left.
That the film ends on an upbeat note is hardly a surprise. The Indy films are escapist entertainments meant to send you out of the theater on a high. But a part of me worried that we might get a throwaway off-screen appearance like Holly Gennaro bawling out John McClane over a payphone...

"Raiders of the Lost Ark" remains the best Indiana Jones film partly due to its very real sense of danger. According to John Rhys-Davies, who played Indy's sidekick Sallah, director Steven Spielberg "was making it up as he goes along. The script was endless pages of action description. A lot of the dialogue was (improvised) by Steven; Steven and Harrison [Ford]; or Steven, Harrison and myself." Indeed, one of the most famous scenes in "Raiders" was improvised by Ford, wherein he shoots stuntman Terry Richards' swordsman during the Cairo marketplace scene.
But while the spontaneous nature of filming "Raiders" lent the film an air of excitement and danger, it also made for a literally dangerous shoot, to the extent that Spielberg was amazed Ford's stunt team made it through the production alive. The director has written about his remorse over allowing Ford to perform many of the stunts himself and...

John Carpenter may not be a real-life carpenter, but he sure has built himself a legacy. It's just one made of movies, not wooden sticks.
Seriously though, any genre movie fan will probably tell you that John Carpenter has made a staggering number of classic motion pictures. "Halloween" may not have invented the slasher genre, but it defined it. "The Thing" may not have invented gory monster effects, but it raised the bar and few films have even nudged it in the decades that followed. "Big Trouble in Little China" is one of the most subversive films of the 1980s, tearing down the whole "badass" genre of cinema by placing a musclebound white American hero in the center stage and then revealing him to be nothing more than a comic relief sidekick in a story about Chinese mythology that he's too damned ignorant to comprehend. And We could go on.

For Oscar-winning film composer Michael Giacchino (“Up”), Steven Spielberg’s “Raiders of the Lost Ark” is the defining movie of his life. It’s what sparked his love of movies and film scores, and what started him on his path to becoming a successful composer, all thanks to John Williams’ rousing, orchestral masterpiece.
Giacchino, who most recently scored Taika Waititi’s “Next Goal Wins” and Juan Antonio Bayona’s “Society of the Snow,” and is prepping a remake of the giant ant movie “Them!” as his directorial feature debut, first saw “Raiders” as a 13-year-old in New Jersey when it opened the summer of 1981. He went back about a dozen times and even sneaked a tape recorder into the theater so he could replay it every night. He also had the soundtrack on vinyl and later bought a second LP containing score, dialogue, and sound effects.

Few deaths in the "Indiana Jones" films as quite as unforgettable as that of Pat Roach's Nazi mechanic in "Raiders of the Lost Ark." Upon spotting Indy (Harrison Ford) duking it out with one of his fellow Nazi handymen near a plane preparing to take off, Roach's nameless, burly villain smiles to himself as he removes his shirt, clearly itching for a fight. He proceeds to give Indy quite the thrashing and might've well won their match, had he bothered to turn around in time and spot the spinning airplane propellor bearing down on him.

Filmmakers Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini got their start with a documentary about a famous Los Angeles restaurant called "Off the Menu: The Last Days of Chasen's," but broke through the world of narrative features with "American Splendor," a comedy biopic starring Paul Giamatti about the underground comic book writer, Harvey Pekar. At the 93rd Academy Awards, Amanda Seyfried snagged a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her work in "Mank," David Fincher's biopic of Herman J. Mankiewicz released by Netflix. In the year that followed, Berman and Plucini linked up with Seyfried and Netflix to make "Things Heard and Seen" based on the novel "All Things Cease to Appear" by Elizabeth Brundage.

When it comes to the female companion characters of the "Indiana Jones" franchise, Karen Allen's Marion Ravenwood stands above the rest. After her debut in "Raiders of the Lost Ark," Marion has returned for two other adventures — "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," and the recent "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny."
Even before "Dial of Destiny" came out, Indy himself, Harrison Ford, made it clear that this would be his last time playing the part of the globe-trotting, whip-cracking archeologist. And based on the less-than-stellar box office returns for "Dial of Destiny," it's unlikely Disney is going to be rushing to make another Indiana Jones movie anytime soon. But while Ford has hung up his hat and whip, Allen isn't quite ready to say goodbye to Marion just yet.

Run-ins with creepy crawlies are an obligatory element of every Indiana Jones movie. "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" is loaded with centipedes, millipedes, and cockroaches; "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" plunges our hero into the rat-infested catacombs of Venice; "Indiana and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" has those not-very-terrifying CGI Siafu ants; and "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" brings back the centipedes and other disgusting insects for the penultimate set piece at Archimedes' tomb.
But when you think of Indiana Jones and slithery, scurrying things, you automatically think of snakes -- although Indy wishes you didn't.
As we learn at the outset of "Raiders of the Lost Ark," our favorite globetrotting archaeologist hates snakes. Personally, I think they're beautiful creatures, but that doesn't mean I'd like to fall into a pit loaded with the sometimes lethal reptiles. When Steven Speilberg's ultra-slick pulp film "Raiders of the Lost Ark" was released in 1981, it was a massive success. Spielberg, following the template laid out by George Lucas a few years earlier on "Star Wars," made an old-world 1930s adventure serial with modern filmmaking techniques and storytelling tropes, transforming the simple, low-budget glories of the past into the marvels of the present. In many ways, "Raiders of the Lost Ark" is a better sequel to "Star Wars" than "The Empire Strikes Back." I can imagine a world wherein "Star Wars," rather than direct sequels, spawned an anthology series wherein each chapter was a modern filmmaker doing their take on the pulp adventures of the past.
But that's not the way Hollywood works, as sequels are a more natural outcropping of a single success. As such, just as "Raiders" was raking in fistfuls of money, Lucas, the film's producer and story writer,...

There is a chase sequence about halfway through Steven Spielberg's "Raiders of the Lost Ark" that takes place in the streets of Cairo. Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) and Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen) are targeted by Nazis and other bad guys, and the two are separated. Marion hides in a basket, while Indy wastes a few weapons-wielding bad guys searching for her. To populate the streets of Cairo, Spielberg had to hire hundreds and hundreds of extras to work in the blistering Tunisian sun.
Filming in Kairouan was, by all accounts, a pretty horrible experience. Temperatures were reportedly over 130°, and many, many members of the crew ended up contracting cases of dysentery from the local food. Spielberg himself only ate food that he brought with him from England, so he was supposedly spared. “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” has wrapped things up for the five-film franchise, starring Harrison Ford as one of cinema’s most iconic characters of all time. The film follows Ford as Indy, a world-famous archaeologist, as he goes on a hunt for an ancient artifact that can alter the course of history. Starring alongside him are new faces such as Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, Toby Jones, and Mads Mikkelsen, plus returning heroes Karen Allen and John Rhys-Davies.
The first four “Indiana Jones” movies amassed six Oscar wins and 13 nominations between them, with the franchise’s first outing, “Raiders of the Lost” winning four and landing eight nods in total, including bids for Best Picture and Best Director for Steven Spielberg. It’ll be a mighty achievement for “Dial of Destiny” to match this, particularly as the previous installment, “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” was snubbed entirely by Academy voters.

Karen Allen was "disappointed" with her small role in 'Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny'.The 71-year-old star briefly returns as Indy's wife Marion Ravenwood in the new movie but lamented how director James Mangold changed the story content and reduced her screentime. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Karen said: "When Steven (Spielberg) was still gonna direct the film, I didn't have the opportunity to read any of those scripts, although I know that Marion was much more involved in the story at that juncture."I knew James had hired new writers and that there was going to be a whole new approach with a new director and new writers, but I was really going into the unknown."The 'Scrooged' star added: "The next thing I knew, I was a reading a script that told ('Dial of Destiny's') story, and of course, I was disappointed.

Los Angeles, July 6 (Ians) Actress Karen Allen, who portrayed the love interest of Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) Marion Ravenwood in the first film in the franchise ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ and then again in ‘The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’, has said that the final romance between Indy and Marion was a bittersweet ending.

[This story contains spoilers for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.]
For Karen Allen, the conclusion of Indiana Jones and Marion Ravenwood’s love story is bittersweet.
In James Mangold’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Indy (Harrison Ford) and Marion begin their final chapter on their own, as Marion had recently filed a separation agreement. It’s eventually learned that their son, Mutt (played by Shia Labeouf in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull), died in Vietnam, and the profound grief that resulted ultimately drove Indy and Marion apart. In the end, after Indy goes on another globetrotting (and time-hopping) adventure, the estranged husband and wife reunite, allowing Indy to take a page out of a beloved scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark and console his soulmate in a way he hadn’t done previously.
While Allen only ends up appearing in one powerful scene, that wasn’t always the case.

The following piece contains spoilers about “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.”
Considering “Raiders of the Lost Ark” ends with angels of death emerging from the Ark of the Covenant to melt the faces of multiple Nazis, it’s not like the Indiana Jones franchise is known specifically for its fidelity to reality. It was with that in mind that “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” director James Mangold devised his film’s finale: an audacious trip back in time to the Siege of Syracuse in 213 BC.
“Well, I never presented it as time travel. I never really thought of it as time travel,” Mangold explained in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “They certainly go through a portal in time at the end of the movie. But the movie isn’t about time travel. It’s about time, it’s about getting older and it’s about the world changing around you.

[This story contains spoilers for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.]
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director James Mangold is glad he not only met his heroes but collaborated with them, too.
Dial of Destiny is Mangold’s twelfth feature film, but it was his second film, Cop Land (1997), that prepared him most for the job nearly three decades later. Cop Land boasted a cast of Sylvester Stallone, Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel and Ray Liotta among others, and this experience conditioned the New York filmmaker for his current working relationships alongside industry titans such as Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford, George Lucas, John Williams, Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy. Mangold certainly anticipated moments where one of these heavy hitters would pull rank, but he was pleasantly surprised when just the opposite happened.
“One of the reasons I agreed to make the movie was because these Mount Rushmore figures of motion picture history...

Indiana Jones is back. This time around he’s back to fight nazis and chase down another McGuffin. It’s a fun entry into the Indy series that you can’t help but think could have been so much more…
There’s a rhythm missing to Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and a beat that it doesn’t quite hit. It’s like all the elements are there, just not quite ticking at the right speed, like the beat is just off and it’s knocking the rest of the dance off-rhythm. I think that the missing beat is Spielberg, he is the one who is the missing piece here. It’s like you assembled all the pieces,...
