(Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Fall Guy movie.)
Yes, The Fall Guy is based on a TV series.
If you weren’t aware of that, it’s likely because you’re of a younger generation that wasn’t alive or old enough to remember the series, which hasn’t exactly re-entered the zeitgeist in the four decades since it went off the air. (An unscientific scan of social media shows more than a few folks who had no idea of the original IP.) But for moviegoers of a certain age, there are references to the series that inspire nostalgia.
The show, which aired from 1981-86, starred Lee Majors as a stuntman who moonlighted as a bounty hunter. The movie stars Ryan Gosling in the lead role, who is also a stuntman. While the movie is not an exact copy of the show, there are several ways in which the film...

For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit one of the most iconic bits of horror movie marketing of all time: when Jason Voorhees took “The Arsenio Hall Show“!
The first time I ever saw the teaser for Jason Takes Manhattan was on the weekend of July 5, 1989. My dad had taken my little brother and I to see Weekend at Bernie’s, and while we were sitting through the trailers, Jason Voorhees suddenly popped up. It was that famed teaser that everyone remembers with Jason looking out onto the cityscape, promising a Friday the 13th sequel wherein Jason would quite literally slice and dice his way through New York City.
Although my parents strictly forbade us from watching Friday the 13th films at the time, I was utterly enamored with Jason Voorhees at just six years old. The teaser didn’t scare me, but it excited me, and ended...

Taylor Swift has conquered the world of music, and it's long been rumored that the next step in her career is the movies.
She has her own eponymous production company, for one. In 2020, she starred in the documentary "Miss Americana," and in 2021, she directed a short film adapting her song "All Too Well," starring Sadie Sink and Dylan O'Brien. Aside from a handful of supporting roles in several films, she also took the 2023 box office by storm with the "Eras Tour" concert film.
Swift has a passionate fanbase, one that is famous for finding (or creating) supposedly hidden messages across her lyrics. Now, her newly released 11th album, "The Tortured Poets Department," has whipped up a new Swiftie theory.
The last track of "The Tortured Poets Department" — "Clara Bow" — concludes with the line: "The future's bright and dazzling." Fans jumped to the obvious conclusion; of course, Swift is hinting to...

With the shortlist voting period for the 2024 Oscars now open, Netflix has revealed a new video of Meghan Markle moderating a post-screening conversation with filmmaker Misan Harriman and star David Oyelowo for the live-action short film hopeful “The After.” An exclusive premiere of the 30-minute discussion can be found below.
“The After,” which is now streaming on Netflix, is about a London rideshare driver (Oyelowo) who “has to reconnect with himself and society after witnessing a devastating random attack in the capital.”
The short film is Harriman’s directorial debut, following years of success as a photographer, activist, and cultural commentator.
“When Covid hit, my second daughter was born just before lockdown started and the whole process, then George Floyd was killed. And I had this moment of deep retrospection recognizing that I’m not okay,” Harriman told Markle in their conversation, which took place last month at a private residence in Montecito,...

A wannabe "Jaws" rip-off theorized what would happen if a killer whale wreaked revenge on humanity -- "Orca" was a warning. Let's be honest: it's kind of a surprise that it's taken this long for killer whales to revolt against humans. We've poisoned their oceans, killed their young, and forced them into a life of showbiz in cramped theme park pools. Humans had a good run but it seems that orcas are the new mammals in charge.
Sailors working off the coast of Western Europe have reported a series of attacks by a group of orcas they said seemed to be "coordinated." This included striking and sinking a number of boats, although no human casualties have been reported. Some scientists said spikes in aggression may have been started by a female orca nicknamed White Gladis, who is believed to have suffered trauma after a collision with a sailboat.

For the past 40 Cannes Film Festivals, Alexandre has been putting on a show.
As the head bartender at the Mondrian Cannes — the établissement formerly known as The Grand — he’s been mixing cocktails and charming post-premiere revelers since 1983. Alexandre — it’s always “Alexandre,” no last name, like Prince or Madonna — is, for festival regulars, as familiar and welcome a sight as Cannes’ iconic red carpet. With a tall, lean frame and sharp Gallic nose, he darts between tables like a more elegant version of Monsieur Hulot, instantly recognizable with his striking bald head and those playful eyes that spring open in delight and surprise at every new guest.
Over the years, Alexandre has served festival grandees and Hollywood royalty. Johnny Depp and Jim Jarmusch, Francis Ford Coppola and Robert De Niro. Isabella Rossellini.
He has his stories.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe really gives us a novelty that took forever for comic book movies to fully embrace. The idea of superhero properties crossing over and building to a much wider world is something that’s in the DNA of the source material. Outside of the Lou Ferrigno Hulk rubbing elbows with half-realized versions of Thor and Daredevil, it’s something that we never truly got to see until Nick Fury stopped by Tony Stark’s house after the Iron Man credits. Before that, the closest thing we had was J. Jonah Jameson referencing the existence of Doctor Strange. Even their rivals at DC Comics couldn’t give us more than a Superman reference in Batman and Robin or a Batman and Robin reference in Steel.
But we did have some close calls over the decades. Some closer than others. Movies and sequels that would have brought together various...

The Santa Ynez Valley — one of California’s most inviting wine regions — now has something new to offer: its first bona fide luxury resort.
The storied The Inn at Mattei’s Tavern (from $950 per night, more booking options at Expedia.com and Hotels.com) in Los Olivos, California, has been meticulously modernized by design firm AvroKO and has just been opened under the management of luxury hospitality titan Auberge Resorts Collection. The new resort cements Santa Barbara County’s once-under-the-radar wine country destination — where past and current residents include Bernie Taupin, Noah Wylie, Bo Derek and David Crosby — as a vibrant vacation spot.
A former 1800s stagecoach stop between San Francisco and Los Angeles offering food and lodgings for travelers needing a recharge, Mattei’s Tavern reigned as the roaring social hub of the Santa Ynez Valley for over a century. Over the years, the spot had a host of iterations under various owners,...

It was back in 1979 when actor Bo Derek appeared on the scene in the movie 10, and it was a huge hit, to say the least. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the film is a romantic comedy in which George, a middle-aged Hollywood songwriter portrayed by Dudley Moore, is infatuated with the beautiful Jenny (Derek) and decides to follow her and her new husband David on their honeymoon.
While there, he realizes that things aren’t necessarily what they seem. It was in the movie that Derek wore her hair in cornrows, and it turns out that the hairstyle is still talked about to this day. In fact, Derek said that her controversial cornrows in 10 had African American women thanking her.

The Gotham Film & Media Institute announced that late filmmaker, activist and Academy Award-winning actor Sidney Poitier will receive the Icon Tribute posthumously during the 32nd annual Gotham Awards ceremony on Monday, November 28 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.
The announcement of this year’s Icon Tribute follows the release of critically-acclaimed documentary film “Sidney,” which had its world premiere during a gala presentation at the Toronto International Film Festival and was released on Apple TV+ in September. The documentary has since won best biographical documentary at the Critics Choice Documentary Awards.
The Gotham Awards Advisory Committee started the Gotham Icon Tribute in 2021, seeking to call attention to the boldness, artistry and impact of a filmmaker from a historically-excluded community whose work has not been previously recognized by the organization. Playwright and filmmaker Kathleen Collins was honored the tribute last year.

We have movies for most of the Marvel Comics characters, don't we? Oh ... wait, no. No, it appears that we don't. There is one major character missing from the MCU, and she's pretty fabulous. People have been fan-casting this role for years, and if a movie about them ever happened, it could be really visually interesting. This is especially true if a certain director helmed a film about her.
In a recent interview with director Cameron Crowe, Rolling Stone proposed something that would be right up his alley in terms of his body of work, and now that it's been talked about, it is absolutely something that has to happen.

The word “legendary” gets tossed around pretty easily when discussing important actors, but there’s a huge difference between starring in a lot of important movies, and starring in a lot of movies while leaving everyone you ever met with an epic, semi-fantastical tale about how incredibly drunk you got.
Premiering at the Venice Film Festival, Adrian Sibley’s documentary “The Ghost of Richard Harris” tells the story of — you guessed it — Richard Harris, but also his ghost. The Irish actor, musician and poet who starred in films like “This Sporting Life,” “The Field,” “Gladiator” and two “Harry Potter” entries led an extraordinary existence that’s well worth recording for posterity. And in his wake, he left behind three sons who barely knew their real father, and who seek in his absence a little bit of understanding and maybe some closure.

These days, with rappers singing about “wet-ass pussy” and Ana de Armas simulating a presidential blow job in “Blonde,” it’s hard to imagine a world in which a couple four-letter words are enough to get a book banned. In the case of D.H. Lawrence’s notorious 1928 novel “Lady Chatterley’s Lover,” it was more than just the sex talk that riled the censors (the 1955 French film version was banned because it “promoted adultery”), although the book certainly seems tame by the standards of “Fifty Shades of Grey” and whatever gynecological surprises an un-Safe Google search might turn up.
How then to approach Lawrence’s controversial classic today, when audiences have seemingly seen it all, but still find themselves surfing for titillation on Netflix (judging by the streamer’s T&a-skewing Top 10 lists)? In an admirable bid to make “Lady Chatterley’s Lover” at once respectable and arousing, French director Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre...

On the Scene as Julie Andrews and ‘The Sound of Music’ Share the Honor of AFI Life Achievement Award
“Welcome to the 48th, 49th, and 50th AFI Life Achievement Award” joked Bob Gazzale, AFI President and CEO, who kicked off the last night’s event in honor of Julie Andrews by first giving the other award of the night, the 2022 Franklin J. Schaffner Alumni Medal, to “Coda” director and AFI alum Sian Heder.
It was a direct address of how the event, which had to take two years off due to the pandemic that is still affecting everyone’s schedules, travels, etc., was now back as a somewhat more humble affair. After a three-course meal, the audience was treated to a bit of theater, with the first presenters being the child stars from “The Sound of Music,” Angela Cartwright, Duane Chase, Nicholas Hammond, Kym Karath and Debbie Turner, all grown up and leading a sing-a-long of “Do-Re-Mi.”

After a two-year pandemic delay, Julie Andrews was finally honored with AFI’s Life Achievement Award on Thursday, in a star-studded celebration that included Carol Burnett, Steve Carell, Gwen Stefani and Cynthia Erivo.
The 86-year-old star of The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins and The Princess Diaries made a rare public appearance at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood to receive the honor, telling The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the event, “I’m still taking the wonder of it in because it’s such a huge evening.”
And living up to that, the evening kicked off with a spectacle, as a woman in costume as Mary Poppins descended from the ceiling and flew around the theater, followed by an onstage Sound of Music cast reunion with the film’s child stars, including Angela Cartwright, Debbie Turner, Duane Chase, Kym Karath and Nicholas Hammond, now all grown up.

Since 1980, UCLA film grads and industry veterans John J. B. Wilson and Mo Murphy have honored the very worst in cinema with the Razzie Awards. Here’s a look back to the worst pictures of the last four decades.
“Can’t Stop the Music” (1980)
The Golden Raspberry Awards got their start by recognizing this musical comedy, a justly mocked quasi-biopic of the Village People.
Rotten Tomatoes score: 8%
“Mommie Dearest” (1981)
Faye Dunaway goes full camp as Joan Crawford in a docudrama whose comedy was often unintentional.
Rotten Tomatoes score: 53%
“Inchon” (1982)
This bloated, over-budget Korean war film starring Laurence Olivier as Gen. Douglas MacArthur was an epic turkey.
Rotten Tomatoes score: 0%
“The Lonely Lady” (1983)
Pia Zadora followed her mysterious (and widely mocked in retrospect) Golden Globe win for “Butterfly” with this adaptation of a trashy Harold Robbins novel about a schoolgirl/wannabe screenwriter.

It’s been 20 years since Reese Witherspoon landed the iconic role of Elle Woods in 2001’s classic comedy, “Legally Blonde.” The film turned out to be Witherspoon’s breakout performance as a blockbuster movie star and led the Oscar winner down the path to becoming one of Hollywood’s most influential actors and producers. With a focus on telling female-driven stories on television, film and digital platforms, Witherspoon’s production companies flourished with Oscar-nominated films such as “Wild” and “Gone Girl” as well as Emmy-winning TV series “Big Little Lies” on HBO and “The Morning Show” on Apple TV+.
During a recent interview with Backstage, Witherspoon was joined by her “Legally Blonde” co-star Jennifer Coolidge to discuss their career highs, lows and “Legally Blonde 3.” When asked about “The Morning Show,” Witherspoon revealed she had “no idea what to expect” when she began filming the series with Emmy winner Jennifer Aniston.

There’s an inherent danger in nostalgia. As we’ve witnessed over the past four years, slogans about some mythical better time in America can come loaded with prejudice. Those good ol’ days weren’t all that great for everyone.
But there are some anachronistic artifacts that are worth … if not celebrating, then at least marveling at, like curios on a shelf. Hulu’s quirky new mockumentary John Bronco unearths an oldie but a goody: the archetype of the masculine pitchman, that kind of rough-hewn all-American male for whom a thick mustache,...

In Bo Derek’s new Reelz documentary, “In My Own Words,” the actress and former model admits, “I don’t care if anybody remembers me. I’ve never had the need to leave my mark on the world.”
That may be so. But Derek, now 63, will forever be remembered for her shot to stardom when she played Dudley Moore’s love interest in Blake Edwards’ 1979 romantic comedy “10.”
Her swimsuits and cornrows made her an instant sex symbol. But her life in the spotlight actually began a few years prior, in 1973, when she was just 17 and cast in her first movie, “Fantasies.” While on location in Greece, she fell in love with her director, former screen idol John Derek, who was 30 years her senior. Their romance ended Jon’s marriage to Linda Evans. Bo and John were married for 22 years before his death in 1988.

Who is John Bronco? He’s a world class racer, a rodeo star, a sex symbol and a legendary pitchman who’s face was instantly recognizable on the Ford Bronco and countless products — and he’s also Walton Goggins and never existed.
But that shouldn’t stop anyone from inflating his legend, as the new short film “John Bronco” aims to do. The mockumentary is the latest from Jake Szymanski, the director who told similarly fake sports legends in the films “Tour de Pharmacy” and “7 Days in Hell.”
“John Bronco” though is a different sort of fake sports icon, a 1966 legend whose jingle went triple-platinum and could be heard in ads for his own cologne, breakfast cereal, video game, action figure and more. The film describes him as the “very embodiment of the American dream, that is, until it all came crashing down.”

Sue Kroll, through Kroll & Co. Entertainment’s exclusive deal at the Burbank, CA studio, will produce alongside Jeff Nathanson. Julie Andrews and Ashok Amritraj will serve as executive producers.

Will Tyler Perry win his third Worst Actress Razzie Award for playing his signature role as Madea in “A Madea Family Funeral”? It was purported to be the final Madea movie, so perhaps the Razzies will want to send him out with a bang — or with a bomb, as it were. But might it also be time to retire the Razzies trend of nominating male actors for female roles?
Perry is certainly not the only male performer who has been nominated across gender categories for playing a role in drag. Adam Sandler won Worst Actor and Worst Actress for playing twin siblings in “Jack and Jill” (2011), and the Razzies have also nominated Shawn Wayans, Marlon Wayans and Martin Lawrence in this category for female characters.

Look to the Stars was honored to attend the event where supporters were submerged into a ‘Night in Africa’.
Upon entry, guests were met with stilt-walking animals from “The Cirque.” African dancers and singers delighted the crowd as guests perused auction items while enjoying hors-d’oeuvres and cocktails & champagne from a skirt-bar.

President Trump flew to Louisiana midweek to support Republican gubernatorial candidate Eddie Rispone, and on Thursday, “Late Show” host Stephen Colbert revealed everywhere he’d *rather* be than at a Trump Maga rally.
Colbert’s long list included: “the Dmv, the dentist, someone else’s child’s clarinet recital, a Soviet gulag [work camp], covered in honey and staked to an anthill, sliding down a 5o-foot razor blade into a bathtub full of gin, and in conversation with someone who knows a lot about Bitcoin.”
His list was followed with a soundbite of Trump boasting about his election numbers.

President Donald Trump was down Louisiana way on Wednesday, holding another Keep America Great Rally in Monroe to goose support for Republican gubernatorial candidate Eddie Rispone.
Trump was basking in the enthusiastic crowd, at one point exclaiming, “Is there anyplace you would rather be than at a Trump rally on a beautiful, wonderful evening in Louisiana?”
The Late Show host Stephen Colbert rose to the bait. “Let’s see, places I’d rather be….the Dmv, the dentist, someone else’s child’s clarinet receital, a Soviet gulag….”
The president also had to remind the crowd that people from all over turned out to vote for him in 2016, including some who apparently rose from the ocean. They included, Colbert said wryly, “The kraken, Godzilla, the Little Mermaid, Bo Derek [and] that fish guy who won the Academy Award by having sex with the girl.”

Welcome to this edition of The Last Week In Wrestling, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and Aberdeen, Washington has a sign in town of Kurt Cobain, which says, “Gimme A Big, Wet Kiss!” On this episode of Kolchak: The Night Stalker, Kolchak gets arrested for stalking a teenager at night. We’ve got a lot of Ring Of Honor to get to and some other wrestling leagues are in here as well, but not David Bowie.
Best Moment:
Bosom Buddies From Hell (Ring Of Honor) – While I don’t like the idea of what, essentially, amounts to a random and futile heel turn, Jay Lethal and Jonathan Gresham turning heel on The Briscoes was a very exciting visual that leads to a great match for Final Battle.
Best Promo:
Bryan And The Big Offer (World Wrestling Entertainment) – On SmackDown, Sami Zayn made a proposal to Daniel Bryan...

Man versus Beast in horror is really about man versus himself; Martin Brody in Jaws is terrified of the water, and must overcome that fear to take down the deadly predator. Man versus Beast was also a big sub-genre in horror during the ‘70s, often times branching out with an ecological message or two. And then there’s Orca (1977), an ostensible Jaws cash-in that sacrifices suspense for weirdness, with a goofy earnestness that’s impossible not to like.
It also came with its own subtitle, The Killer Whale, lest you were unclear about Dino De Laurentis (King Kong ‘76)’s intentions; make no mistake, this film was sold as a terrifying thriller in every trailer and print ad. Released near the end of July by Paramount Pictures, Orca didn’t net Jaws’ grosses or respect, with many critics dismissing it as overwrought and ridiculous. Well, of course it is. It’s...
