Laurie’s death was confirmed by her manager, Marion Rosenberg, in a statement to Variety.

Betta St. John, who portrayed the lovely island girl Liat in the original Broadway production of South Pacific and starred as a princess alongside Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr in the MGM romantic comedy Dream Wife, has died. She was 93.
St. John died June 23 of natural causes at an assisted living facility in Brighton, England, her son, TV producer Roger Grant, told The Hollywood Reporter.
The California native played one of the survivors of an airline crash, who is chased by a crocodile in Tarzan and the Lost Safari (1957) — the first Tarzan film in 15 years and the first one in color — and then returned for Tarzan the Magnificent (1960). Both films starred Gordon Scott as the King of the Jungle.

Lawrence Turman Dies: Oscar-Nominated Producer Of ‘The Graduate’, ‘American History X’ & More Was 96
Oscar-nominated producer Lawrence Turman died Saturday at the Motion Picture and Television Country Home and Hospital. He was 96. He had a stellar career not only as a producer of such seminal films as The Graduate (1967), The Great White Hope (1970), American History X (1998) and many more in a producing career that lasted six decades, but he also took a significant turn when he left his partnership with producer David Foster to head the prestigious Peter Stark Producing Program at USC in 1991, an association that continued until his retirement just two years ago.
His son, John Turman, confirmed the death to Deadline. “Our father Lawrence Turman passed away late yesterday,” he said. “It’s sad, but he had a long and storied life, and it’s the passing of an era.” He added that the MPTF is planning a memorial service as well as USC at a later date.

Time has been kind to Alfred Hitchcock's "Vertigo." Dismissed as dull and middling by the critics of 1958, "Vertigo" was named the greatest film of all time by Sight & Sound in 2012. Experimental films can take a while to receive due praise, and "Vertigo" is definitely one of Hitchcock's more experimental films. He even invented a whole new type of shot for it.
In the film's opening, Scottie Ferguson (James Stewart) is hanging off a skyscraper and glances stories down to the alleyway beneath. When he does, the shot distorts and the buildings on opposite sides of the alley seem to stretch. The effect was achieved by mounting a camera on a dolly track and then zooming in on the lens while moving the dolly backward. Pedro Almodóvar’s new movie has the warmth and the grandiloquent flair of a picture from Hollywood’s golden age and the whiplash twists and addictive sugar rush bumps of daytime soap.
As ever with Almodóvar, there are gorgeously designed interiors with fierce, thick blocks of Mondrian colour, huge closeups of the female leads and overhead shots of food preparation. It’s impossible...

When Alfred Hitchcock's "Suspicion" begins, we see nothing but black. Only the charismatic voice of Cary Grant can be heard speaking to us through the dark. "Oh, I beg your pardon. Oscar-nominated screenwriter and producer Walter Bernstein, who survived the blacklist era by writing pseudonymous scripts for television and later wrote films including “Fail-Safe,” “The Front” and “Semi-Tough,” died on Jan. 22. He was 101.
Bernstein’s longtime friend and former WGA West president Howard Rodman shared the news of his death on Twitter Saturday. “Truly saddened to hear that Walter Bernstein – legendary screenwriter, and one of the great humans – died last night. Zendaya surprised many by winning Best Drama Actress at the Emmys for playing a troubled teen in “Euphoria,” which made her the youngest winner in that category’s history. Armie Hammer has a succinct answer when asked how it feels for him and Lily James to play the same roles in the new version of Rebecca that were once played by legendary actors Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine: “Well, they’re both dead, what are they gonna say?”
Hammer (Call Me by Your Name) is joking of course, and he acknowledges working under the shadow of both the 1940 film directed by Alfred Hitchcock and the classic 1938 Gothic novel by Daphne du Maurier. But he also says that giving the story another go on the screen is a risk worth taking.

Taking on a new adaptation of a classic novel is daunting enough, but factoring in that the story was previously translated to the screen by Alfred Hitchcock, produced by David O. Selznick and starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine – a film that would win the Oscar for Best Picture – makes it a particularly bold move. As we point out in our review though, it works, and in part because Wheatley has hewn closer to the book in some respects but also added modern themes and sensibilities – particularly towards the end.

Based on the 1938 gothic novel by Daphne du Maurier, director Ben Wheatley brings the book to life for the big screen with Armie Hammer and Lily James. However the director has a tall order to fill since Alfred Hitchcock tackled the adaptation with Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine in 1940 which led to 10 Academy Award nominations and three wins for Best Picture, Best Cinematography, and Best Actor for Olivier. Luckily I am not familiar with either the book or original adaptation, so this viewer will judge the new Netflix movie on its own merit.

“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again,” begins both Daphne du Maurier’s 1938 best-seller “Rebecca” and nearly every adaptation of the Gothic novel that has followed, including Alfred Hitchcock’s atmospheric 1940 best picture winner. Ben Wheatley’s career is set for a major boost with upcoming projects such as Netflix’s “Rebecca” remake and the Alica Vikander-starring “Tomb Raider” sequel, but there’s a secret third project the writer-director cooked up in quarantine over the summer. Wheatley confirms to Little White Lies that he shot a horror movie over 15 days in August in the middle of his coronavirus lockdown.
