- DirectorMichael ChavesStarsLinda CardelliniRaymond CruzPatricia VelasquezIgnoring the eerie warning of a troubled mother suspected of child endangerment, a social worker and her own small kids are soon drawn into a frightening supernatural realm.
- DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsMichael BonitatisDamon WhitakerLucy LiuThis short is the story of 3 friends whom, it seems, watch television all the time. They meet each weekday to watch a group of "special needs" people get on the bus to go home.Young Lucy Liu! Awesome short film by Aronofsky. Makes me want to go out and make something tbh.
- DirectorAdam McKayStarsLeonardo DiCaprioJennifer LawrenceMeryl StreepTwo low-level astronomers must go on a giant media tour to warn humankind of an approaching comet that will destroy planet Earth.Starts a little slow, but about halfway through, it just takes off. Leo’s speech on TV is amazing. The social and political commentary is strong without being annoying. Perfect casting. This a really good movie.
- DirectorMarc MeyersStarsLiev SchreiberMarisa TomeiPeter SarsgaardThe lives of two different families collide when their children begin a relationship that leads to a tragic accident.Great cast but a little pretentious and directionless. The interwoven stories is a cool idea but telling the stories individually and restarting felt like a bit of a waste of time. None of the characters seem relatable or deep, and the stories just kind of finish. Meh. (Dollar Store)
- DirectorChristoph LauensteinWolfgang LauensteinSeán McCormackStarsCallum MaloneyDermot MagennisIan CoppingerAn 11-year-old boy befriends three aliens after they crash their spaceship onto the grounds of an closed gas station by his house.Forte is pretty funny and the concept of the aliens wanting to order from the shopping network is clever but that’s about it. Script is flat, as well as the jokes. Most voice acting is subpar. The animation is rough for a feature film, not distractingly bad but not really capable of expressing emotion beyond a simple expression. The older kid was definitely written by an out of touch adult. Makes sense this movie didn’t take off. Worth a try for Will though. (Dollar Store)
Edit: okay, the ending is pretty good. The dragon thing pulling out the stump was pretty poor though. - DirectorJeff TremaineStarsJohnny KnoxvilleSteve-OChris PontiusAfter 11 years, the Jackass crew is back for another crusade.A ton of fun, even without Bam. Felt a lot like the old day. The new cast was a good addition too. So happy to see this in theaters with the boys.
- DirectorEdgar WrightStarsThomasin McKenzieAnya Taylor-JoyMatt SmithAspiring fashion designer Eloise is mysteriously able to return to 1960s London, where she encounters dazzling wannabe singer Sandie. But the glamour is not as it seems, and the dreams of the past crack and splinter into something darker.Fantastical and creative, with great twists. Cool edits and effects. Edgar Wright is a clever dude.
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsBruce CampbellEllen SandweissRichard DeManincorFive friends travel to a cabin in the woods, where they unknowingly release flesh-possessing demons. While I’m not particularly into gory movies, this was a fun watch. There were a lot of creative camera techniques and effects used on such a low budget movie. Definitely worth the watch.
- DirectorJordan PeeleStarsDaniel KaluuyaAllison WilliamsBradley WhitfordA young African-American visits his white girlfriend's parents for the weekend, where his simmering uneasiness about their reception of him eventually reaches a boiling point.Watched Jordan Peele’s DVD commentary - absolutely worth it.
- DirectorMatt Bettinelli-OlpinTyler GillettStarsSamara WeavingAdam BrodyMark O'BrienA bride's wedding night takes a sinister turn when her eccentric new in-laws force her to take part in a terrifying game. One of Beck’s purchases! I enjoyed this one for a Gordy flick. Good concept. Twisty and turvy. A little predictable but still fun! Worth the watch.
- DirectorDebra GranikStarsThomasin McKenzieBen FosterJeffery RifflardA father and his seventeen-year-old daughter are living an ideal existence in a vast urban park in Portland, Oregon when a small mistake derails their lives forever.Tough but rewarding movie. Interesting idea that played out in unexpected ways. Fantastic acting. Worth the watch.
- DirectorPaul BettanyStarsAdolfo Mendez-NouelAnthony MackieKevin Arnold HoffmanHannah and Tahir fall in love while homeless on the streets of New York. Shelter explores how they got there, and as we learn about their pasts we realize they need each other to build a future.Starts out strong but it becomes clear about halfway through that this movie is intended to be more enlightened than it is. It’s jammed with interesting ideas and brilliant little moments, cemented by pedantic conversations about God and virtue. Strip some of the ideas out and focus on the relationship and hardships, and this would have been a better movie. Acting is quality, no denying that though.
- DirectorMichael ShowalterStarsJessica ChastainAndrew GarfieldCherry JonesAn intimate look at the extraordinary rise, fall and redemption of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker.Incredible acting and well paced, but could have used a bit more detail in certain places for me. Quality biopic but not necessarily a rewatchable. Good movie.
- DirectorJonathan DaytonValerie FarisStarsSteve CarellToni ColletteGreg KinnearA family determined to get their young daughter into the finals of a beauty pageant take a cross-country trip in their VW bus.
- DirectorMichael LehmannStarsWinona RyderChristian SlaterShannen DohertyAt Westerburg High where cliques rule, jocks dominate and all the popular girls are named Heather, it's going to take a Veronica and mysterious new kid to give teen angst a body count.
- DirectorShawn LevyStarsBen StillerCarla GuginoRicky GervaisA newly recruited night security guard at the Museum of Natural History discovers that an ancient curse causes the animals and exhibits on display to come to life and wreak havoc.
- DirectorDavid Blue GarciaStarsSarah YarkinElsie FisherMark BurnhamInfluencers looking to breathe new life into a Texas ghost town encounter Leatherface, an infamous killer who wears a mask of human skin.A little heavy handed and silly in parts, but worth a single watch. The full circle idea was pretty cool but the overly heavy political messages detracted from the fun of the movie.
- DirectorPeter ChelsomStarsSimon PeggRosamund PikeTracy-Ann ObermanA psychiatrist searches the globe to find the secret of happiness.Classic ‘00s indie style and techniques, mixed media, and lightly linear storylines make for a fun watch. Moments of introspection are slipped in throughout and the message is clear. Happiness is in the eye of the beholder and to find it, you have to go out and look. Good acting and a good script. Just nothing profoundly important or standout about the movie, or it would be rated higher. The whole getting jailed in Africa was a little out there. (Dollar Store)
- DirectorDustin FairbanksStarsTammy BlanchardGuillermo DiazDavid SpadeA single mother and her young daughter struggle to make ends meet until they inherit their family's farmhouse. When a business rival covets their water rights, the situation spirals out of control.Half baked, generic, and predictable. Some acting was good, but there were moments that flew off the handle. Unnecessary and unfulfilled story with weak twists. Cinematography wasn’t great. Idk. Most actors did fine but this movie isn’t really worth it. Also, why is it named after a throwaway line in the movie? Warning Shot has so little to do with what actually happens. Also, the movie’s comments on religion were silly. (Dollar Store)
- DirectorRuben FleischerStarsTom HollandMark WahlbergAntonio BanderasStreet-smart Nathan Drake is recruited by seasoned treasure hunter Victor "Sully" Sullivan to recover a fortune amassed by Ferdinand Magellan, and lost 500 years ago by the House of Moncada.Visually impressive and great performances from everyone, but a relatively unsurprising story. I’m sure it would be more impactful as a prequel if I played the games but as a stand-alone action movie, pretty standard. I’ll definitely catch the sequel though.
- DirectorDoug LimanStarsSarah PolleyJay MohrScott WolfThe aftermath of a drug deal as told from three different points of view. This movie is a banger. Everyone is awesome in it, the story is interesting and while telling the story three times has been done before, this movie felt different. Neurotic and nihilistic. Going to be revisiting this one for sure.
- DirectorAaron SorkinStarsNicole KidmanJavier BardemJ.K. SimmonsFollows Lucy and Desi as they face a crisis that could end their careers--and another that could end their marriage.Incredible sets, make up, and acting. Very interesting story, only suffering a bit from the jumping around imo. Definitely a worthwhile watch though, good biopic.
- DirectorRobert BudreauStarsEthan HawkeNoomi RapaceMark StrongBased on the absurd but true 1973 bank heist and hostage crisis in Stockholm that was documented in the New Yorker as the origins of the 'Stockholm Syndrome'.Interesting and well acted. Really enjoyed the story, even if it’s a bit distanced from the reality of the true story. Love Noomi. Definitely worth the watch. (Dollar Store)
- DirectorJeff NicholsStarsMichael ShannonJessica ChastainShea WhighamPlagued by a series of apocalyptic visions, a young husband and father questions whether to shelter his family from a coming storm, or from himself.Somehow forgot to document that I watched this back around the same time as Leave No Trace. Phenomenal movie. Michael Pitt is a beast. Twisty in the best ways. Definitely worthwhile.
- DirectorAndrew NiccolStarsEthan HawkeUma ThurmanJude LawA genetically inferior man assumes the identity of a superior one in order to pursue his lifelong dream of space travel.Really a great movie. Incredible colors, sets, and camera work. Every actor was spotless. Solid story. I will be back for another viewing for sure. Makes you think about the importance of life in a different way.
