- DirectorYorgos LanthimosStarsColin FarrellRachel WeiszJessica BardenIn a dystopian near future, according to the laws of The City, single people are taken to The Hotel, where they are obliged to find a romantic partner in 45 days or they're transformed into beasts and sent off into The Woods. The Lobster is not for everyone. It's more of an acquired taste. This is a treat for those of us who enjoy originality, the dark humor found within terrifying situations and ambiguity. Questions are not asked within the world of The Lobster, everything is just accepted as it is. This is also a good rule to keep while watching the film for the first time. Don't question it too much, just enjoy this unique experience for what it is. And don't lose your sense of humor just because you are unable to make sense of certain things. Answers will come upon multiple viewings. This will be a film that will divide audience between those who love it and those who hate it. However, after a few years or even a decade, The Lobster will be looked back upon as a masterpiece.
- DirectorKyle Patrick AlvarezStarsEzra MillerTye SheridanBilly CrudupIn 1971, twenty-four male students are selected to take on randomly assigned roles of prisoners and guards in a mock prison situated in the basement of the Stanford psychology building. For those willing, the suspension of disbelief can be taken to new extremes with The Stanford Prison Experiment. The entire cast is on fire in their roles and the director is able to create a sense of claustrophobia, dread and reality that can start to make you feel as if you are one of the inmates. The prison guards are easily the most sinister villains to appear on-screen in 2015. A truly terrifying psychological thriller not for the faint of heart.
- DirectorAlex GarlandStarsAlicia VikanderDomhnall GleesonOscar IsaacA young programmer is selected to participate in a ground-breaking experiment in synthetic intelligence by evaluating the human qualities of a highly advanced humanoid A.I.A dialogue-driven sci-fi thriller that slowly works it's way under your skin. Thought-provoking and terrifyingly suspenseful, an induced state of paranoia may linger long after the end credits begin to roll. The themes explored in Ex Machina, done with subtlety and a casual ease, make it one of the best science-fiction films to-date.
- DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsEmily BluntJosh BrolinBenicio Del ToroAn idealistic FBI agent is enlisted by a government task force to aid in the escalating war against drugs at the border area between the U.S. and Mexico.Gritty, dark and brutal. Sicario grabs you in the opening scene and does not let go. Like Emily Blunt's character, you just go along for this ride not knowing exactly what is going on or who to trust. The more that is revealed, the further we descend into this horrific world and the greater the tension grows. There is magic between director Denis Villeneuve, cinematographer Roger Deakins and composer Jóhann Jóhannsson.
- DirectorGeorge MillerStarsTom HardyCharlize TheronNicholas HoultIn a post-apocalyptic wasteland, a woman rebels against a tyrannical ruler in search for her homeland with the aid of a group of female prisoners, a psychotic worshiper and a drifter named Max.What can I say about this film that hasn't already been said? It's perfectly orchestrated chaos. What it lacks in story it makes up for in practical effects, insane stunts, stunning imagery, an unforgettable score, dedicated performances and raw action with great characters we actually grow to care about. It's not just a lovely day, it's bloody glorious.
- DirectorDavid Robert MitchellStarsMaika MonroeKeir GilchristOlivia LuccardiA young woman is followed by an unknown supernatural force after a sexual encounter. The best supernatural horror film of the last decade. While it pays homage to classic 80's horror films, it brings back what worked about them and leaves out what made too many of them unintentional comedies. It also taps into what made the Japanese horror films of the 2000's so terrifying. The film doesn't offer much of an explanation, which is what makes It so terrifying. Good old fashion scary fun.
- DirectorAlejandro G. IñárrituStarsLeonardo DiCaprioTom HardyWill PoulterA frontiersman on a fur trading expedition in the 1820s fights for survival after being mauled by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team. The greatest man vs. nature story ever put to film. Relentless, barbaric and excessive, yet it works all these things to it's advantage. The Revenant is also a revenge tale. They say revenge is a dish best served cold and it doesn't get much colder than this. It's not a fun film to watch but it's gorgeous to look at and it takes you on a journey you won't soon forget.
- DirectorDuke JohnsonCharlie KaufmanStarsDavid ThewlisJennifer Jason LeighTom NoonanA man crippled by the mundanity of his life experiences something out of the ordinary. What begins as an animated comedy about a night in the life of a self-help author becomes an introspective meditation on longing and individuality. Charlie Kaufman proves, once again, he is the most original and unique American storyteller working in film.
- DirectorLenny AbrahamsonStarsBrie LarsonJacob TremblaySean BridgersA little boy is held captive in a room with his mother since his birth, so he has never known the world outside. The most emotionally genuine drama of 2015. It's heart-stopping, heart-warming and heart-breaking. Room gives it's audience the sensation of seeing the world anew, through a 5-year old's eyes.
- DirectorNoah BaumbachStarsBen StillerNaomi WattsAdam DriverA middle-aged couple's career and marriage are overturned when a disarming young couple enters their lives.I don't think this film got the credit it deserves. On the surface, it's a comedy about a middle-aged couple's impossible fight to maintain their freedom and youth, as artists and individuals. And yet, the film is so much more than that. It also explores the youth of today's culture, giving a glimpse into the way they perceive the world. While We're Young is Noah Baumbach's best film yet.
- DirectorTom McCarthyStarsMark RuffaloMichael KeatonRachel McAdamsThe true story of how the Boston Globe uncovered the massive scandal of child molestation and cover-up within the local Catholic Archdiocese, shaking the entire Catholic Church to its core. The best film about journalists and journalism since All the President's Men.
- DirectorDanny BoyleStarsMichael FassbenderKate WinsletSeth RogenSteve Jobs takes us behind the scenes of the digital revolution, to paint a portrait of the man at its epicenter. The story unfolds backstage at three iconic product launches, ending in 1998 with the unveiling of the iMac.Pretty tame for a film directed by Danny Boyle. However, Aaron Sorkin's dialogue and Michael Fassbender's performance make this a must-see. It's like a spiritual sequel to The Social Network without the adrenaline-fueled score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
