- On 8th October 1941, Stalin issued a secret order forming a female aviation unit. Known later as the 46th "Taman" Guards Night Bomber Aviation Regiment, a unit like this had never existed before. Their operational record began at the Salsk Steppes and the Don battles and ended in Nazi Germany. Flying PO-2 night bombers or 'mules', these brave female pilots flew harassment bombing and precision bombing missions, which successfully destroyed the enemy's river crossings, fortifications, machinery and manpower. The regiment flew over 23,000 sorties and is said to have dropped 3,000 tons of bombs. The most highly decorated female unit in the Soviet Air Force, each pilot had flown over 1000 missions by the end of the war with twenty-three pilots awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union. Fighting with equal bravery and skill as their male counterparts earned them the name 'Nachthexen' (Night Witches) by the Germans.

His life is full of pleasure, and it appears that his dreams and ambitions have at last been realised. - During the peak of socialism in the 1980s, 27-year old Kostik Voloshyn dreams of escaping abroad. Not willing to "build the socialist society", Kostik lives a double life; his job as a scientist at a research institute is merely a front for his card game hustling at which he is an expert. However, when Kostik wins a large sum from under the nose of Goga, a tough card player, he returns to Odessa to avoid reprisals. Hoping to 'earn' enough money to leave the Soviet Union for good, Kostik successfully swindles all his opponents with the help of his uncle, 45-year old Balaban, a leading gangster in Odessa. Kostik is unaware that it was Balaban who committed a serious crime twenty years ago for which his brother, Kostik's father, was arrested. Balaban helped Kostik's father to escape over the border, but the latter had no other choice but to leave his wife and little son to their fate in the USSR. And now Balaban intends to make Odessa too hot for Kostik because he doesn't wish to share with him Maya, the woman he loves, who is developing a whirling romance with Kostik. Kostik's uncle pulls the plug on Kostik by forbidding him cardsharping in Odessa. Nevertheless, Kostik does not stop because he badly needs money and fake passports to leave the country with his mother for abroad where their divided family might reunite.
- Nothing holds Assia Demidova to her native village anymore: her mother, the last person who was dear to her, has recently died, leaving Assia completely alone. However, the girl has a dream of becoming a famous fashion designer, but she cannot enter the college because of a mistake in her matriculation certificate. A few years later, the car in which Assia, Artiom and their little daughter, Nadia are driving is attacked. Artiom is killed, while Nadia disappears without trace. Now Assia must find her daughter at any cost.

- Joe Sokoloff, a sergeant with the Canadian police, travels to the remote country to carry out his beloved grandmother's last wishes, but all his plans fail almost immediately on arriving in his historic homeland, when he is robbed while traveling on the train. But his sincerity and openness wins him the love of an abused, previously-kidnapped girl, whose mother, not exactly understanding the Canadian's intentions, finally sees what her young daughter likes in this bumbling outsider.

- When a beautiful new student, Angelina Aistova joins Liosha Agafonov's group at college, he feels an instant attraction to her. - In the spring of 1982 as Brezhnev's power was waning, Yuri Andropov decides to tackle corruption and apathy in the Soviet Union. A number of company directors were targeted, but Andropov's first aim was to arrest Berkutov, director of the country's First Yeliseyev Grocery Store, who, it was believed, had been supplying faulty goods to influential government officials for many years. With Brezhnev's rule almost at an end and Andropov tipped to replace him, Colonel Skachko, Head of the Investigation Department approaches some of Berkutov's inner circle, starting with his assistant Zoya Platonova. During the 'cultivation' of Zoya Platonova, an interesting fact is established - her son, Anton had had an affair with Skachko's wife, Masha, who had given Anton a book forbidden by the regime. To save Masha, Skachko has no alternative but to release Anton and give up his interrogation of Zoya Platonova. Berkutov is soon arrested and questioned by Skachko, who takes an instant liking to him. Being a war veteran, Berkutov has become a 'hostage' of the state system, having been ordered to get rid of surplus goods, which he distributed among the power-holding structures without making any profit for himself. He had even bought his second-hand Mercedes with money that he had earned honestly. Skachko realizes that Berkutov is not guilty but is nevertheless going to be made a scapegoat, as the machinery of justice has already been started. After Brezhnev's death events spiral out of control as Andropov, needing to set a strong example, demonstrates an increasingly tough line against corruption. Berkutov is tried and executed, and after his death, his carefully kept accounts are filed away in the archives.
- In the late 1980s, Pasha Karitonov, a young musician from Odessa, returns home from an eight-month trip to India working on board a merchant ship. He has been trying to earn enough money to buy his own flat, a condition imposed by the father of his girlfriend, Lilia before they can get married. However, when exchanging his currency one day, Pasha encounters a young swindler girl, who steals all his money. Pasha realises that this puts paid to the wedding plans, so the lovers decide to flee to Crimea.
- Platoon commander Lt. Kravtsov reports for active duty. Military 'fate' allocates for such lieutenants only three days of life, on average. During this time, Kravtsov should become the commander of his troops and lead them in a hopeless attack, to save the regiment coming to the rescue.
