- Kurt Wallander is a police inspector in the Swedish town of Ystad. Shortly after he has seen a young girl kill herself by self-immolation, he is called to investigate the murder of government minister Wetterstedt. He has been scalped. Wealthy business-man Carlman is murdered in the same fashion, and a serial killer is clearly responsible. Drunken ex-journalist Lars Magnusson points Wallander towards Sandin, a retired and corrupt cop, who admits that he once 'cleaned up' for both the dead men but will offer no more information. The next murder is that of an habitual criminal, who has been tortured before death. His estranged wife and teen aged son are not grief-stricken. His behaviour has traumatized his younger son and sent his daughter into a mental hospital. Following another scalping, and an appeal to the public, a former prostitute tells Wallander that all the victims were connected with a vice ring, importing very young girls into Sweden. The girl who killed herself was probably among them. A raid on Sandin's house reveals girls lined up for the sex trade concealed in his cellar. He is clearly the next intended victim of the scalper and Wallander has no qualms in using him as bait in the trap.
- Two deaths that seem unconnected might be a part of a bigger plan. Kurt goes on a date, but is this new woman too good to be true? Hackers gain access to the police computers and a murderer escapes, but are they planning something worse?
- Three youngsters are shot dead whilst having a woodland picnic in fancy dress. One girl's mother reports her as missing but postcards from Paris supposedly sent by the daughter negate any police involvement. Then another parent reports that Wallander's troubled colleague, Svedberg, had earlier expressed an interest in the kids' movements, and then Svedberg is also found shot, photos of the dead trio being found in his flat along with one of a mystery woman, identified by Svedberg's cousin as his ex-girlfriend Louise. The corpses are found, and a friend of the victims is also slain, having told Wallander that his workmate was really gay, and that 'Louise' is a transvestite, and a wholly murderous one, who adds to his toll of dead by killing a further trio of innocents. Diagnosed as diabetic and aware that he never truly knew the dead colleague who regarded him as his best friend, Wallander must not only avenge Svedberg but halt a psychopath from an ordinary but obvious walk of life from striking far closer to home.
- An elderly couple, the Lovgrens, are murdered at their isolated farmstead and Mrs. Lovgren's last word to Wallander seems to be "Foreigners." When this is leaked to the press a migrant labourers' camp is torched and a foreign worker shot by anonymous right wing vigilantes. Daughter Linda, dating a Syrian doctor, accuses Wallander of racism and, although Lovgren's brother-in-law tells the police that the dead man had a hidden fortune, which his murderers stole, and an illegitimate son, neither fact is immediately helpful. However, Wallander's obsessive pursuit of the owner of a car used in the revenge killing yields a result, though it almost costs him his job and the Lovgrens' slayers are finally cornered in a fairground.
- Lawyer Sten Torstenssen tells Wallander he believes his old father's death in a car crash was homicide but Wallander is reluctant to act until Sten is found hanged and the pathologist claims that he was murdered. Sten's secretary shows Wallander a postcard of Africa with a text threatening the lives of father and son and wealthy philanthropist Harderberg, a client of Sten's, admits to also having received one. All were posted from the same hotel, apparently by industrialist Jurgen Nordfeldt, who survives an attempt to kill him. Nordfeldt had stumbled on a racket importing body parts from Africa which Wallander, helped by ex-cop Anders, now Harderberg's security guard, must resolve.
- Three elderly men, Holger Eriksson, Gosta Runfeldt and Eugen Blomberg, are murdered in seemingly unrelated incidents. The smell of perfume on Runfeldt's suitcase suggests a woman's involvement. None are mourned by their families, who regarded them as bullies and womanizers, which shocks Wallander, whose own father has just died. A dedication in a book by Eriksson to a woman called Krista leads to the members of a former self-help group for abused women, attended by Vanja, Runfeldt's ex-lover. Is one of these women the killer?
- Vicar Adam Smallbone and his solicitor wife Alex have been at his new urban parish of St. Saviours for a month but the congregation is tiny and, when part of a church window is broken, Adam learns that the insurance will not cover it and he must raise funds himself. Suddenly the church is full of families, anxious to give donations and presents,if the vicar will have a say in admitting their children to the local church school,highly-rated by OFSTED.These include the local M.P. Patrick Yam. The headmistress Ellie will play along but this means delaying the wedding of a very nice couple in order to accommodate her sister's rushed marriage. Finally Adam decides. He will not be bribed and things must stay as they are but, thanks to devoted but dozy parishioner Colin,he finds out how the window was broken.
- The archdeacon visits the church on a Sunday when there are only five people present. Adam prays for a miracle, which seems to come in the form of Darren, a charismatic evangelist who brings his three figure congregation from St. James, which is being renovated - along with white sofas, fruit smoothies and a rapper. Darren goes down a storm and contributes ten grand to St. Saviors' funds but Adam believes he is just a showman and refuses to let him preach again in his church. Colin inadvertently saves the day by getting over-excited about one of Darren's lady helpers.
- Thieves steal the lead from the church roof so,to raise cash,Adam allows a Muslim children's group to use the hall.He is impressed by their piety compared to the rude kids he goes to address at the church primary school and this inspires him to oppose a strip club being opened opposite the church. He visits an existing club to know his enemy but, after the inevitable embarrassment, learns the new club will not be opening after all. Colin is almost arrested whilst trying to stop the real lead thieves and makes his escape in a burkah.
- Adam is envious when a vicar he once knew,Roland Wise, becomes a mainstay on radio's 'Thought For the Day' and a frequent contributor to the press. So,to raise his own profile,he secures an interview on television but nerves cause him to say,"We're all gay in the church," which is not well-received. He asks Roland for help but is amazed when his colleague admits to why he has become a media darling and finds that Roland is just as insecure as himself.
- Feeling shunned in the pub,Adam is pleased to meet Leon, who wants to get married to Debs in his church. They become drinking buddies and go jogging together. Adam invites Leon and Debs to dinner and discovers that, fifteen years earlier,as students,Leon and Alex had sex on a bus. Adam is concerned that Leon is still flirting with Alex and wonders whether to conduct the ceremony but Debs calls it off when she finds out that Leon is trying to get back with an unimpressed Alex - who only has eyes for her husband.
- Following a poor review of his last sermon on Godslot.com,Adam considers packing it in and stays at home watching TV whilst a bogus vicar roams the city, obtaining freebies and harassing the Bishop of London. After making a fool of himself at a vicars and tarts party organized by Ellie,he gets drunk and is almost arrested - but discovers redemption and the identity of the impostor.
- Layabout Steve and girl-friend Becky just want to stay in bed all day, having sex and watching the T.V. set they got out of a skip but are interrupted by Becky's frantic sister Laura, whose mildly psychotic boy-friend Paul stayed out all night. When Paul shows up at Steve's flat Steve puts the cat among among the pigeons by revealing that Paul copped off with a Mel C lookalike. Whilst Laura and Paul are arguing in the toilet Dan from upstairs comes in with two melons to share.
- It's Steve's birthday but he just wants to stay in bed, having sex and watching Becky's present, the 'Inspector Morse' box set. When his mother turns up on her way to gate-crash a colleague's son's engagement party he tells he has swollen glands. When Dan,Laura, her friend Shelly and Paul arrive he tells them the same so they all set off for the pub, leaving him to pleasure himself making use of their presents. Then they all come back in and catch him at it.
- Steve is trying to get through to his bank to report a fraud but keeps getting put on hold and made to listen to 'Candle in the Wind'. Becky is trying to cover a zit and they should have taken the sausage rolls over to the pub where Paul's six-year old son is having a party to celebrate his beating leukaemia an hour ago. Dan's arrival, threatening to perform card tricks, only adds to the delay until Paul,in costume as Postman Pat,angrily turns up to take charge of the sausage rolls. Hearing there is no free bar Becky and Steve decide to give the party a miss and have sex instead.
- There's a whole crowd round at Steve's to watch football on television but Becky's sister Laura is bored and keeps interrupting, her boy-friend Paul in pieces having just learned that he was adopted and Steve distracted by a dream he had of Becky having sex with her last boyfriend. Steve's friend Barney and his dad Mike are there too and accuse Steve of racism when he claims that 'Black people are fun'. Fortunately Barney's girl-friend turns up and agrees with Steve. And she's not only black but called Gay as well.
- It's Sunday and Steve is about to meet Becky's parents,Jill and Nigel, for the first time, as they are coming to mend the fridge.Already jittery, having heard that his uncle has just died,he is over-friendly towards them, offering them out of date yogurts and dropping rape into the small talk. It doesn't help that the fridge isn't broken at all,the thermostat is just turned down too low.Carnal noises from the flat above as Dan entertains Paris,in all likelihood a hooker, add to the awkwardness and Becky and Steve are mightily relieved when the parents have gone home.
