I commend the direction of the show so far. This show is a character driven sci-fi drama and clearly not meant to be Sg1/Atlantis Mark II. This series obviously has a huge story arc right from the start and I expect quite a few sub-arcs will emerge. While the flashbacks are an effective way to get across character development, I don't think it is quite as overdone as BG and I don't think it fair to make direct comparisons.
SG-1 was pretty hammy the first season, bordering on boring, and it took a while for it to get good. We only got to see the character through direct interaction with the episodic stories. Now we have a much richer character palette from the start and I find it refreshing.
At first I was really worried about the cast but so far i'm very happy. My only fear now is that they will rely too much on the flashbacks as a gimmick and it will muddy the action and stories.
