Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken (2023)
Uhm...same as Little Mermaid?
Particularly, I had understood Dreamwork's duel with the mouse since 1994, and this had me thinking "Would it be great?". As with the animation, it seems..generic, nothing exciting to say. At least The Bad Guys, their last project, had a director wanting it as epic as possible. But Ruby looked more like a Netflix series, all pieced in one. As for casting, I've not realized Jane Fonda's mistrust in the military during Vietnam..til now. The score had some great moments here and there, but the choice of songs. I get it. 2023. Pop music doesn't seem the same. Bottom line, it wasn't great, but not hateful. Just some blandness.
Labyrinth (1986)
A perfect gem of Henson's legacy.
As a young kid myself, watching Labyrinth on dvd, I was mesmerized by Jim's work on set. Using puppetry to have another lifelike character would be essential for one actor, if a script calls for that. Bowie..does a true villain. I always crack up whenever he had a laugh on set with Jim. As for his music, I thought I would be hearing pop music. And oh, gosh. They were thinking Michael Jackson, or Prince, when they're developing Jareth. Thanks to this movie, it got me open to those two artists, loving them to this day. Jennifer Connelly, acting with Hoggle, mostly cracked me up. Rest In Piece, Bowie.
Thir13en Ghosts (2001)
Goats?
GHOSTS! Oh gosh, didn't you hear him, Arthur😆. Even though it was frowned upon by critics when prints arrived at cinemas, it might've been a treasure of modern horror. I've only seen it on dvd (since I was born in 2002), and I've been glad that, as a young adult now, there were more stories told, filming inside a glass house to even Frizzell's scoring sessions. I just yelped in excitement when Shout Factory contains the EPK and interviews with Shannon Elizabeth and two ghosts.
Who might've thought ghosts could be opaque, soaked in blood, and even kill people physically? K. N. B., of coarse!😁
The house set itself was just like a museum, as it had been decorated with 16th century artifacts. I've had a fascination with the writing on the walls (wish someone could do a project like that).
Putting Matthew Lillard and Rah Digga in the same set just cracked me up. I'd just wish they see each other again, probably at a horror convention.
Medal of Honor (1999)
"Your papers are in order."
One unique game brought from world class director Steven Spielberg (loved his work) and his then popular studio Dreamworks. I couldn't get through much of the game, but Giacchino's orchestral theme and the visuals are fit for what Medal of Honor is. I'd give salute to developers and recommended this.
The Bad Guys (2022)
Must for every actor and animator!
As much as I adored Dreamwork's catalogue, this can be another franchise. If it's possible, producing a sequel and writing a tv series would've been a remarkable task.
Mr. Wolf generally has the ultimate design for a lead. Mostly, his outfit during the golden dolphin heist sequence resembled Michael Jackson. Other times, he'd be in his normal vanilla jacket. (Looks vanilla-ish, I guess). Though I've not seen Lupin III, his expressions sometimes have that major quality. The thick eyebrows, the hair. Had the same charm as Sam Rockwell does!
This film has derived the styles of Tarantino, and even anime. Not only it reveals a new breed of animation, filmmaker Pierre Perifel had to tell us, they brought the heist genre a comeback (Pulp Fiction, Ocean's 11). Even watching the final battle, Wolf thrives to the broken bridge into the sky, which remained E P I C of any Dreamworks film. I would've loved to compare The Fast and Furious with that bit.
What it had throughout the trailers up to the day it screened, was that it taught us on difference. On the one hand, Wolf outrageously explains to Diane that he's been treated as The Big Bad Wolf, on how everyone was feared of him, much like the first Shrek. Even people with autism can go through this a bit.
Anyway, I'm excited to see what's more for Dreamworks to do with The Bad Guys soon. Webs, hit it.😎
