Whilst we're still here trying to catch our breath and wolf down a post-match banana after Challengers, director Luca Guadagnino has already left the court to get the ball rolling on his next cinematic outing. And having already signed up Julia Roberts for upcoming thriller After The Hunt, the Italian auteur behind Bones And All and Call Me By Your Name seems to have tracked down his next leading man: Andrew Garfield.
As first reported by Deadline, the Spider-Man: No Way Home and Tick, Tick... Boom! is currently in negotations to star alongside Roberts in the upcoming Amazon MGM Studios production, slated for theatrical release in 2025. Coming from first-time screenwriter Nora Garrett, the film, described as an "intense dramatic thriller", centres around a college professor (Roberts) who finds both her professional and private life thrown into turmoil when a star pupil levels a scandalous accusation against one of her colleagues.

With the arrival of the first trailer for the "live-action" "Lion King" prequel "Mufasa: The Lion King" came news that the film's music is being spearheaded by Lin-Manuel Miranda. In the aftermath of the smash success of his stage musical "Hamilton" (which was eventually released as a movie on Disney+), Miranda seemed to be the guy in Hollywood, working on music for things like "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," "Moana," "Vivo," and "Encanto," just to name a few, while also physically appearing on screen in "Mary Poppins Returns," "In the Heights," "His Dark Materials," and more. The dude was everywhere, and, as often happens when someone becomes overexposed, a backlash began. His past couple of years have been more subdued, and "Mufasa: The Lion King" marks his return to the familiar arms of The Walt Disney Company.

Andrew Garfield spoke to an audience rich in Spider-Man fans about his career at the Red Sea Film Festival Thursday, sitting alongside Saudi producer and Red Sea Film Foundation CEO Mohammed Al Turki. The two have known each other since Garfield starred in Ramin Bahrani’s 2014 drama “99 Homes,” which Al Turki produced. “I’m currently out of work,” Garfield quipped. “So I’m just here to talk to Mo really.”
“I’m 40 years old now and I still get absolutely petrified,” Garfield said. “I have terrible impostor syndrome. I didn’t know it was a viable option to be an actor. I loved being an athlete. I hated school. I wasn’t strong enough to be a rugby player. It was my mother who suggested I look at doing something creative.”

Walter Hill's 1979 cult action thriller "The Warriors" is a favorite among film fans, adapting Sol Yurick's 1965 novel of the same name into an addicting tale about a group of rival gangs in New York City all trying to track down and take out a group known as the Warriors after they're framed for the killing of a powerful gang leader named Cyrus who had been attempting to unite the different groups. The Warriors, miles from home in the Bronx, attempt to make it back to their turf on Coney Island, as the various groups try to kill them once they enter each new territory. Hill's film is as gripping as it is gritty, but Yurick's novel is an even bleaker examination of gang culture and urban rot. So of course, it's only fitting that "The Warriors" would become the subject of a large-scale musical theatre adaptation.

In the fall of 2021, Olivia Colman scored her first career Emmy for “The Crown” despite not having succeeded on her Oscar bid for “The Father” that spring. This made her the 16th performer to prevail at the Emmys directly after going home empty-handed at the Oscars and the fourth to do so during the 21st century. Now that the 2023 Emmy nominations ballots have been released, eight of the 16 actors who lost Oscars at the most recent ceremony officially have shots at joining Colman on this list.
Gold Derby’s Emmy odds currently indicate that the man and woman with the best hopes of following in Colman’s footsteps are Brian Tyree Henry and Hong Chau, who just received their first career Academy Award nominations for their respective supporting turns in “Causeway” and “The Whale.” Henry is seeking his second comedy supporting Emmy notice for “Atlanta,” while Chau could pull double...

Steven Spielberg's "The Fabelmans" opens with two unseen parents pitching their son on the wonders of the moviegoing experience. The kid is scared to enter the theater; it's his first movie, and he's not keen on seeing huge faces onscreen in the dark.
For reasons both understandable and just unfortunate (cinema's declining cultural clout), moviegoers in the 2020s likewise seem less inclined to see Spielberg's films. The parental appeal to young Sammy Fabelman (Mateo Zoryan) is as much an appeal on behalf of Spielberg, for whom Sammy serves as a semi-autobiographical stand-in.
Lowering themselves into the frame next to Sammy, his father, Burt Fabelman (Paul Dano), and mother, Mitzi Schildkraut-Fabelman (Michelle Williams), take on the voice of motion picture science and art, respectively, as they continue their appeals for moviegoing. Last month, Spielberg played cinema advocate in a similar way when he publicly thanked his "Minority Report" and "War of the Worlds" collaborator,...

Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield took the internet by storm (as they should!) after presenting together at the Oscars ceremony this year. Tweets were exchanged and a lot of feelings were felt. And now it's been announced (via Deadline) that the pair will co-star in a new project together a romantic comedy film titled "We Live In Time."
It's a pleasant change from their recent filmography. Pugh appeared in a multitude of different genre-bending roles — Ari Aster's horror film "Midsommar," Olivia Wilde's "Don't Worry Darling," along with her superhero responsibilities in Marvel Studios' "Black Widow" and "Hawkeye." Garfield was recently seen in Lin-Manuel Miranda's "Tick, Tick... Boom!," Michael Showalter's "The Eyes of Tammy Faye," and his terrific television outing in Hulu's "Under the Banner of Heaven." The performers haven't appeared in a romantic comedy in a very long while, and this one's certainly shaping up to be an exciting project.

Andrew Garfield is reflecting on taking a slightly different path from the one he feels was expected of him. The actor, who is about to celebrate his 40th birthday along with his high-school friends, discussed coming to accept his life's path in an interview with British GQ. "It's interesting - I always thought I would be the first to have kids and settle down," he said, "and they're all shacked up and a couple of kids deep for the most part. And I'm like . . ."
He went on to muse about what it means to be childless at his age. "Releasing myself from the societal obligation of procreating by the time I'm 40 has been an interesting thing to do with myself," he said. "Where do I start with why it didn't happen?" he said, laughing. "No, it's more about accepting a different path than what was kind of expected of me from birth.

You know what they say about Broadway: If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere.
Tony winner Lin-Manuel Miranda is set to be adapting a musical loosely inspired by Martin Scorsese’s beloved 1977 movie musical “New York, New York” for Broadway, set for a March 2023 release. The official opening night will be in April 2023, and Tony winner Susan Stroman will direct and choreograph the musical.
The Scorsese film starred Liza Minnelli as a lounge singer who falls for a saxophonist, played by Robert De Niro. Their romance gives way to their respective ambitions and dreams of music stardom against the backdrop of the Big Apple in the 1940s.
However, the same characters will not be appearing in the new iteration. Deadline reported the Broadway production will “feature little of Scorsese’s storyline” from the film. Yet the setting remains the same: post-war 1946 in Manhattan as the city recovers.

Andrew Garfield is shutting down criticisms of method acting. For the “Spider-Man: No Way Home” star, the controversial approach isn’t about being an “arsehole” to co-stars and crew members.
“I’m kind of bothered by the misconception, I’m kind of bothered by this idea that ‘method acting is bullshit,'” Oscar nominee Garfield shared on the “Wtf with Marc Maron” podcast. “It’s like, no I don’t think you know what method acting is if you’re calling it bullshit, or you’ve just worked with someone who claims to be a method actor but who actually isn’t acting in the method at all.”
Garfield clarified, “People are still acting in that way, and it’s not about being an arsehole to everyone on set. It’s actually just about living truthfully under imagined circumstances and being really nice to the crew simultaneously and being a...

From a young age, we’re told to show, not tell. Or show and tell, a concept that the second graders in “Space Oddity,” Kyra Sedgwick’s directorial debut, seem to grasp very well onscreen, unlike the script of this film.
“Space Oddity” stars Kyle Allen (“West Side Story”) as Alexander McAllister, a man preparing to leave Earth on Mission Mars, an esteemed space-age venture led by a wealthy private company.
No, not Elon Musk’s SpaceX program or Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic, both name-dropped in the film. Instead, Mission Mars is a vague concept that may or may not be a scam, and soon “Space Oddity” seems to hint that Alex is living in a “Truman Show”-esque delusional construct built from the trauma of surviving a car accident that killed his older brother, Tom. This isn’t helped by Alex’s Skype friendship with disgruntled suburban dad...

Musicals, like rom-coms, have seen better days at the box office. Luckily, however, they've gained a new lease on life thanks to the streaming market. Last year saw "tick, tick... Boom!" hit Netflix, ushering in the Andrew Garfield renaissance on its way to landing a well-earned pair of Oscar nods. Not long after that, Disney's "Encanto" did sturdy business in theaters for a pandemic-era release, only to explode in popularity upon hitting Disney+. Then came Steven Spielberg's "West Side Story," which crashed and burned during its theatrical run only to find a much larger audience on streaming.

Andrew Garfield is taking a breather. The actor has been booked and busy for the past few years: there were his Spider-Man films, "Tick, Tick... Boom!," and now, his new true-crime series, "Under the Banner of Heaven" on Hulu. "I'm going to rest for a little bit," Garfield said in a recent Variety interview. "I need to recalibrate and reconsider what I want to do next and who I want to be, and just be a bit of a person for a while."
Garfield recently joined fellow Spider-Man alum Tobey Maguire in making a surprise appearance in "Spider-Man: No Way Home," starring Tom Holland. Although the actor previously said he was "definitely open" to a return to the Marvel franchise, it looks like it might not be anytime soon: "I need to just be a bit ordinary for a while." News of Garfield's break comes after Holland also revealed that...

Will Smith is finally an Oscar winner. It looks like Andrew Garfield stepped in as Zendaya's Spider-Man at the 2022 Oscars. The two Spider-Man alums posed for a quick photo together on the red carpet on Sunday. Garfield - who was nominated for best actor in a leading role for "Tick, Tick... Boom!" - made a surprise appearance in "Spider-Man: No Way Home" alongside Zendaya and her boyfriend, Tom Holland, so their reunion was a sweet treat for Marvel fans.
Garfield talked about his epic comeback in an interview with Deadline in January, where he revealed that he had one condition for joining the franchise again. "Well, I was just waiting to see if Tobey [Maguire] was going to do it, and if Tobey was going to do it, then I was like, 'Well, I have no choice,' you know? I follow Tobey to the ends of the Earth. Despite not being nominated for an Oscar, there sure was a lot of talk about Bruno at this year's ceremony. On Sunday, Becky G and Luis Fonsi joined the cast of "Encanto" - Adassa, Stephanie Beatriz, Mauro Castillo, Carolina Gaitan, and Diane Guerrero - on stage for the first-ever live performance of "We Don't Talk About Bruno," the breakout hit from the Disney animated musical. And it was magical, to say the least. Megan Thee Stallion surprised the audience when she joined in with her own brand-new verse for the song.

Lin-Manuel Miranda has had a particularly busy year. The actor and songwriter is the brains behind Disney's "Encanto" soundtrack, and also made his directorial debut for the film "tick, tick...Boom!" an on-screen adaptation of the musical by the same name by Jonathan Larson. Miranda's latest works are currently nominated for several Oscars, including a best original song nomination for "Dos Oruguitas" from "Encanto."
"Dos Oruguitas" is the first song Miranda has written that's entirely in Spanish. On writing the song, he told The New York Times, "I needed to reach for a poetic language that is beyond my standard conversational Spanish. I'm pretty fluent in conversational Spanish, but this needed to be elevated." In addition, his film "tick, tick…Boom!" is present in two Oscar categories. Andrew Garfield and Jamie Dornan had an adorable reunion on the red carpet at the 2022 Oscars. Garfield - who's nominated in the best actor category for his role in "Tick, Tick... Boom!" - photobombed Dornan (who stars in best picture nominee "Belfast") while he was taking photos with his wife, Amelia Warner. Dornan and Warner laughed at Garfield's hijinks, and then the old friends embraced each other.
Back in January, Dornan talked about the longtime rumor that he lived with Garfield, Eddie Redmayne, and Robert Pattinson back when they were all struggling actors in Los Angeles in the late 2000s. He confessed that he and Redmayne were direct roommates, but Garfield, Pattinson, and "Daredevil" star Charlie Cox were around all the time.

Andrew Garfield continues to receive praise for his work on the big screen. On Wednesday night, the actor attended the 2022 Costume Designers Guild Awards in Los Angeles where he was honored with the Spotlight Award for his "Tick, Tick... Boom!" portrayal of Jonathan Larson.
Judith Light, who appears in the film as Larson's agent, Rosa Stevens, presented Garfield the award, sending him into tears. As he took the podium for his acceptance speech, Garfield joked about being angered because Light made him cry. "To be honored by the angel on Earth that is Judith Light is a moment that will keep me going for the next 30 years," he said through tears.
"I'm just so surprisingly overwhelmed and touched to be in this room with my community and so many collaborators that I love and I value," Garfield said, addressing the audience. "I feel like the luckiest, most fortunate actor alive.

In a social media landscape that's rife with daily controversy, spontaneously dropped blooper reels may be the last bastion of agreed-upon good in the world. Netflix's Oscar-nominated musical drama "Tick, Tick...Boom!" clearly knows this, as the streamer just dropped these delightful outtakes on Twitter:
Granted, the gag reel for "Tick, Tick...Boom!" is less than a minute long, a measly offering compared to the 9-minute beast of a blooper reel HBO Max's "Peacemaker" dropped a few days ago. There's something equally inspiring and infuriating about great artists who find success across multiple mediums. We've seen this in 2021 with actor and composer Lin-Manuel Miranda's critically acclaimed directorial debut "tick, tick... Boom!," and we saw it decades earlier with the films of Bob Fosse. Known primarily as a choreographer with a provocative and specific style of dance, Fosse went on to have a career as a film director characterized by a few misses and some really stellar hits. Fosse is so much more than snazzy hats and jazz hands. In fact, not all of his films are even musicals.

There are only two distinct seasons for invested moviegoers: Oscars season, and the wait until Oscars season. We kid (mostly), but the end of the year and the beginning of the next have always served as benchmarks for the most prestigious, award-ready films from the buzziest filmmakers in the business. The Gotham Awards, which held its 31st ceremony last night, has been held as an early awards barometer for lower budget indie films. For example, the Gotham Awards left out movies such as Jane Campion's "The Power of the Dog" and Lin-Manuel Miranda's "Tick, Tick... Boom!" that would otherwise be considered as early contenders,...

Where did that come from, Andrew Garfield?
Mr. Garfield stars in Tick, Tick... Boom! for Netflix, and he stuns.
Lin-Manuel Miranda directs the feature, based on the musical of the same name by the late Jonathan Larson.
Tick, Tick... Boom! never made it to Broadway, performing only off-broadway.
Known for Rent, Larson's work has seen plenty of acclaim.
Miranda's new take on Tick, Tick... Boom! turns Larson's simple stage musical into a sweeping and engaging 115 minutes.
Everything was beautiful; from the sets, the performances, and even the cheesy cameos of literally every Broadway star living,
The choreography used was nothing to laugh at, and for Garfield, who has never done a musical before, could not have been easy.
But he, along with the rest of the cast, performed some incredible dances and musical numbers.
Garfield's singing voice also surprised, as he's never shown off his vocal chops until this film.

Christopher is covering the 2021 AFI Fest Film Festival. Follow along for his reviews.
The 2021 AFI Fest Film Festival began Wednesday, November 10th with the World Premiere of Netflix’s Tick, Tick... Boom! (which got raves from Nathaniel). My festival began on Thursday with three films: one documentary feature, one international Oscar contender and a romantic anthology that had a splashy Cannes debut. It already feels great to be back in-person at a film festival. AFI is doing a hybrid of in person and virtual screenings this year, offering a nice variety for festivalgoers.
