The MGM+ original drama series “Godfather of Harlem” has cast “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “How to Get Away with Murder” actor Rome Flynn as a recurring guest star during the show’s upcoming fourth season.
Flynn will portray Frank Lucas, a country boy from North Carolina who ventures to Harlem and, after initial friction with gangster Bumpy Johnson (Forest Whitaker), eventually rises to become Bumpy’s fiercest defender and right-hand man.
Academy Award winner Denzel Washington first portrayed Frank Lucas in the 2007 film “American Gangster,” which is loosely based on the criminal background of the real-life gangster who operated a drug empire in New York City during the late 1960s and early 1970s. In the TV series, the character’s story will begin ten years earlier than in the film.

Giancarlo Esposito doesn’t seem to have a lot of trouble finding work. The character actor extraordinaire boasts more than 200 credits on his IMDb page going back to the 1980s, and just in the past few years he’s recurred on “The Mandalorian,” “Godfather of Harlem,” “The Boys” and “Better Call Saul.” He’s a performer whose reputation precedes him, his screen presence consistently magnetic and oft intense. His career was supercharged by his portrayal of chicken entrepreneur and drug kingpin Gus Fring – first of “Breaking Bad” and then on “Saul.” Of his portrayal of Fring, he says, “I wanted to create a character who was formidable but who was (also) polite and graceful and who took care of his business family in a certain way. It re-enthused me that there was a complete and very complicated character that I could develop with this team of writers. I recognized what...

Variety has shared a piece on 2024's streaming titles, confirming Echo is the second most-viewed series on Disney+ this year so far. It's an impressive achievement, particularly as Marvel Studios dropped all five episodes at once, leading to the show being quickly forgotten.
We've seen in recent years that weekly drops are much better for keeping people talking about new titles (which goes against Netflix's once highly successful streaming model of releasing every episode at once).
Rumour has it Echo suffered from quite a few issues behind the scenes, with six instalments becoming five, as a result. That could explain why they hit Disney+ on the same day, though reviews were somewhat positive as is evident from the show's 71% Rotten Tomatoes score.
However, putting this news into context is the fact, "[Percy Jackson and the Olympians] accounts for nearly a quarter of Disney+ original series viewing time so far...

Exclusive: Ilfenesh Hadera (Godfather of Harlem) has been tapped to star opposite Denzel Washington in Apple and A24’s High and Low, an English-language reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime thriller, from filmmaker Spike Lee.
She comes to the project following collaborations with Lee on his acclaimed Netflix series She’s Gotta Have It, based on his classic 1986 film, as well as his movies Chi-Raq and Oldboy.
Loosely based on the 1959 novel King’s Ransom, written by Evan Hunter under the pen name Ed McBain, the original High and Low watches as a shoe company executive becomes a victim of extortion when his chauffeur’s son is kidnapped by mistake and held for ransom. It’s unclear how closely Lee’s film will hew to the original storyline, and there’s no word yet as to the role Hadera will play.

While film awards have mostly been steady as they go, despite the WGA and SAG strikes last year, the TV awards timeline has been tied in absolute knots to the point where one deserves an award for even being able to guess which season of a show is in contention.
Normally, an announcement like the 2024 WGA Awards nominations would let us know what new shows are likely to become the next class of Emmy contenders. This year, what sticks out more are the nominees whose awards runs are still chugging along a year after their premieres. All the nominees in the New Series category — “The Diplomat,” “Jury Duty,” “The Last of Us,” “Poker Face,” and “Shrinking” — are for TV seasons that have already just finished their Emmy runs. The increase of $1 per month is a modest change, but one that fits with Amazon’s plans to increase streaming profits nonetheless.
Amazon has made a lot of changes to its streaming platforms in the past week. On Jan. 29, ads officially rolled out for all current Prime Video customers who chose not to upgrade to an ad-free plan for $2.99 per month extra. Amazon has made a lot of changes to its streaming platforms in the past week. On Jan. 29, ads officially rolled out for all current Prime Video customers who chose not to upgrade to an ad-free plan for $2.99 per month extra. Over the weekend, MGM+’s turn for an overhaul came, as the streamer announced it was increasing its monthly subscription price to $6.99 per month, up one dollar from its current rate.
New subscribers will see MGM+ price increase take effect immediately. For a limited time, new subscribers can sign up to MGM+ for a discounted price of $58.99 for the year. Amazon is looking to increase the amount of streaming ads it offers, and its streaming platform MGM+ could be next to see ads invade its interface.
As streaming services go, MGM+ tends to skate under the radar a bit. The streamer is owned by Amazon, but is typically an afterthought when discussing that company’s other streaming platforms like Prime Video, Freevee and even Twitch. In fact, during Amazon’s conference call with Wall Street analysts to discuss its quarterly earnings report, MGM+ was not even mentioned by Amazon executives. Nevertheless, subscribers would be smart to anticipate big changes to the streamer in the near future, specifically in its decision to thus far not to include ads on the platform.
Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky told analysts his company wants to increase advertising in its streaming properties. Prime Video converted all customers to ad-supported unless they pay to go ad-free on Jan.

Lucy Fry (the Wolf Creek TV series), Madeline Brewer (The Handmaid’s Tale), Sheryl Lee (Twin Peaks), and comedian Matt Rife (Natural Selection) lead the cast of the psychological horror film I Live Here Now, which recently made its way through production with first-time feature director Julie Pacino at the helm. Utopia represents the worldwide rights to the project, and Screen Daily reports that they’ll be launching distribution sales at the European Film Market, which will be held during the 74th Berlin International Film Festival later this month.
I Live Here Now sees Fry taking on the role of a woman who finds herself trapped in a remote hotel where the violent echoes of her past come alive, blurring the lines between her darkest nightmares and the waking world.

It’s been a big start to 2024 for Colman Domingo and Ayo Edebiri who — after earning their first Oscar nomination and Emmy win, respectively — lead the pack of film and TV nominees for the 55th NAACP Image Awards.
Domingo is nominated for three awards: outstanding actor in a motion picture for “Rustin,” outstanding supporting actor for “The Color Purple” and entertainer of the year, the ceremony’s top prize.
Edebiri is nominated for outstanding supporting actress for “The Bear” and guest actress for “Abbott Elementary.” Victoria Monét received the most nominations in the music recording categories, earning six nods including outstanding new artist. The “Jaguar II” hitmaker is followed closely by Usher, who earned five nominations including entertainer of the year.
Fantasia Barrino, Halle Bailey and Keke Palmer — three multihyphenate talents who happened to share the screen with Domingo and Usher this year — round out the nominees for that award.

Exclusive: Earlier this morning, Amazon revealed that it was laying off several hundred employees across Prime Video and Amazon Studios as part of a review of its business.
Details have emerged about the cuts, which were described by one source close to the company as a “bloodbath”. Senior execs let go include Nancy Cotton, Arturo Interian, Marcy Kaplan, Chris Castallo and Uri Fleming across different divisions.
Most of the exits are a result of the integration of Lindsay Sloane’s MGM Scripted Television team alongside MGM+ and the Barry Poznick-led MGM Alternative TV under Chris Brearton, VP, Corporate Strategy, Prime Video and Studios. Sloane and Poznick’s teams will continue to work closely with the studios teams in developing for Prime Video and also will continue to produce for outside networks and streamers.

Co-exclusive licensing agreements like the recent one between Max and AMC+ are becoming more common, but who could be the next to team up?
Halloween on Max was a little spookier than normal in 2023. New data from Ampere shows that five of the seven titles licensed temporarily to Max saw their popularity increase during September.
