Atomic Features, the production company co-founded by Daniel Ragussis (“Imperium”) and Dennis Lee (“Fireflies in the Garden”), has launched a new development fund, having secured financing from a consortium of investors led by Cxm Enterprises, Davis & Associates, and Pine Valley Investments.
Atomic’s development fund will employ the formal methodology devised by Ragussis as the founder of Notes for Execs, the industry’s first workshop to help executives give better notes to screenwriters.
Notes for Execs launched in 2019 and has included participants from Warner Brothers, Universal, Fox and Disney, as well as multiple management companies and agencies. Ragussis was also formerly Head of Development for Lucas Foster’s Anvl Entertainment.
The fund utilizes this approach to development, but applies it to director-driven projects, offering a new model to bring films to market. Each project from Atomic will start with bringing on board a director, offering Atomic’s portfolio of writers...

We recently learned that the long-awaited Max Dune prequel series formerly known as "Dune: The Sisterhood" has been retitled Dune: Prophecy, and the show has now added another key cast member.
Variety reports that legendary Indian actress Tabu has signed on for a recurring role. Her character is named Sister Francesca, who is described as “Strong, intelligent, and alluring, Sister Francesca leaves a lasting impression in her wake. Once a great love of the Emperor, her return to the palace strains the balance of power in the capital.”
Tabu is one of the most celebrated actresses in the history of Indian cinema, having won the National Film Award for best actress twice for Maachis and Chandni Bar. Her English-language credits include Life of Pi, The Namesake, and the BBC miniseries A Suitable Boy.

Neon Intl. has added to its growing EFM slate with Jason Buxton’s “Sharp Corner,” starring Ben Foster and Cobie Smulders. The company, launched last year as the sales arm of Neon, will launch the project in Berlin.
The under-the-radar feature, now in post-production, is based on the short story from Russell Wangersky’s Giller Prize-shortlisted collection “Whirl Away,” and marks Buxton’s follow up to his debut film, 2012’s ”Blackbird,” which won the best first feature in Toronto and picked up the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes Écrans Juniors.
“Sharp Corner” follows a dedicated family man who becomes obsessed with saving the lives of the car accident victims on the sharp corner in front of his house — an obsession that could cost him everything.
The film, a Canadian-Irish co-production, is produced with the participation of Telefilm Canada, the Canada Media Fund, Screen Nova Scotia, Ontario Creates and in association with Bell Media/Crave.

I can almost imagine Out of Darkness’ director Andrew Cumming pitching the film to potential backers as Quest for Fire meets Predator. And that would be a fairly accurate description of this Stone Age thriller about a tribe of early humans being picked off by an unseen foe. And one that makes it sound a lot less cerebral and more commercial than it might otherwise appear.
45,000 years ago, six early humans have left their tribe to find a new home. Leading the group is Adem, who also has his young son Heron and Ave who’s carrying Adem’s child along with him. A New Year means lots of removals from Netflix and January 1st is looking busy, with over 100 movies set to leave the service already. Below, we’ll be keeping track of all the Netflix departures for the first month of 2024.
First, a few housekeeping notes as to how Netflix removals work before we dive in. Due to licensing agreements, shows and movies added to Netflix aren’t added forever. Instead, they’re essentially rented for a fixed period. All the shows below have their current window on Netflix ending and will likely be bound for a rival streaming service.
We list titles slightly differently from other outlets, with our listings being the actual day of removal. If you want to watch any titles scheduled to expire on January 1st, for example, you’ll need to watch by the end of December 31st.

Stuntman-turned-director Derek Barnes has expanded his 2016 short Walking Supply into a feature, which made its world premiere at this year’s Blood in the Snow film festival.
Walking Supply opens with a bang as the Russian offices of an international corporation are raided by armed men of unknown origin who kidnap several of the staff. The men end up in a labour camp, and the women probably have an even worse fate. They’re told if their company pays for their release, they’ll be freed. Until then, work until you drop if you don’t want to starve.

In a broad-based deal, Netflix and Germany’s Constantin Film, one of Europe’s biggest production-distribution companies behind the “Resident Evil” film franchise and TV series “Shadowhunters,” have struck an exclusive long-term partnership.
The powerful alliance sees Netflix acquiring pay distribution rights pay to Constantin Film’s theatrical productions in the German-speaking region. These include national and international original and co-produced films, as well as films acquired for cinema or straight-to-video (Stv) release, German and international theatrical productions.
Titles will be made available to Netflix subscribers on an SVOD basis 10-12 months after their theatrical release. In return, Netflix will contribute significantly to the financing of these productions, Constantin Film announced this week. The HBO Max series Dune: The Sisterhood (which is a prequel to the Dune feature films directed by Denis Villeneuve) is having a rough ride on its way to the screen. First, the show lost showrunner Jon Spaihts (co-writer of the first Dune film) – and when he stepped away from the show it was said that he would be focusing on working on the screenplay for Dune: Part 2 with Villeneuve instead. The Hollywood Reporter’s sources also informed them that Spaihts had turned in one script and a revised outline for Dune: The Sisterhood, and the producers at Legendary weren’t happy with his work. So the decision was made that he was better off sticking with the features. Spaihts was replaced by Diane Ademu-John and Alison Schapker… and then Ademu-John stepped down as well, leaving Schapker as the sole showrunner. Villeneuve had been planning to direct the first two episodes of the series,...

In his 2013 film "Man of Steel," director Zack Snyder gave us the most realistic and human representation of Superman yet. Although it's a dark, gritty, and deeply controversial take on the otherwise colorful superhero, the film packs a punch thanks to its emotional complexity, giving us a Superman for the modern age. Henry Cavill is a terrific Superman, and his performance in the film always be memorable, no matter the number of Clark Kents waiting in the pipeline.
"Man of Steel" did a lot of heavy lifting. It was the first Superman movie in seven years after "Superman Returns" tried (and failed) to rejuvenate the franchise, as well as the film that launched the DC Extended Universe (Rip). In keeping with the darker tone of the rest of the film, "Man of Steel" also boasts some of the most intense -- and destructive -- superhero action scenes ever brought to the big screen,...

Award-winning filmmaker and acclaimed visionary Jeff Barnaby passed away in Montreal on Oct. 13, following a year-long battle with cancer.
The 46-year-old, who was born and raised on the Mi’gmaq community of Listuguj, is widely celebrated as redefining Indigenous cinema with elements of magical realism, body horror and sci-fi.
According to a release announcing Barnaby’s passing, he is remembered as a passionate filmmaker who loved music and often created the soundtracks to his films on the fly with whatever instruments were required. He was uncompromising in his stance on Indigenous identity and storytelling, and was a valued member of the film community for his authenticity and honesty.
“In Mi’gmaq the word for ancestor and parent is the same thing, ungi’gul. Your language, your land, and your elders are time capsules as much as they are cultural touchstones,” Barnaby recently wrote, as per the release.

Jeff Barnaby, a filmmaker and member of the Mi’kmaw tribe who brought Indigenous cinema to greater attention, has died at 46. He had a yearlong battle with cancer, his representative confirmed.
Raised on the Listuguj Reserve in Quebec, Barnaby is known for his early shorts, the Jutra Award-nominated The Colony and the Genie-nominated File Under Miscellaneous.
His 2013 debut feature, Rhymes for Young Ghouls, criticized Canada’s residential school system. Barnaby followed up with the 2019 zombie horror film Blood Quantum, which swept the Canadian Screen Awards, winning six out of its 10 nominations — the most of any film at the awards that year. It featured a mostly Indigenous cast.
Blood Quantum depicted a zombie outbreak on a fictional Mi’kmaq reserve. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2019, but saw its theatrical release canceled by the pandemic. It was released for streaming in 2020.

Canadian Indigenous filmmaker Jeff Barnaby, best known for his Rhymes For Young Ghouls and Blood Quantum movies, has passed away. He was 46 years old.
Barnaby, who was raised on the Mi’gmaq community of Listuguj, died on Thursday in Montreal after a year-long battle with cancer, his family confirmed in a statement received by The Hollywood Reporter.
The filmmaker revolutionized Canadian indigenous filmmaking by using genre film tropes to discuss themes and issues impacting Canada’s embattled First Nation communities. That included injecting elements of magic realism, body horror and sci-fi into his Indigenous storylines.
After completing studies at Dawson College and later Concordia University’s cinema program in Montreal, Barnaby broke out in 2013 with his debut feature, Rhymes for Young Ghouls. The film offered an indictment of Canada’s controversial Residential School system wrapped in a revenge story set on the fictional Red Crow reserve.

Back in 2020, Indigenous filmmaker Jeff Barnaby applied his fresh perspective to the zombie movie with Blood Quantum, one of the year’s very best horror movies. Today Bloody Disgusting is deeply sad to report the news that Barnaby has passed away at just 46 years old.
Prior to Blood Quantum, Barnaby directed several short films including From Cherry English and The Colony, and he directed his first feature in 2013 with Rhymes for Young Ghouls.
With Barnaby’s passing, we’ve lost a talented filmmaker whose career was only just beginning. More importantly, a filmmaker whose voice and perspective are truly irreplaceable.
An official statement sent to press this afternoon reports, “Acclaimed filmmaker Jeff Barnaby passed away after a year-long battle with cancer. Jeff was born and raised on the Mi’gmaq community of Listuguj. He spent his adult life living in Montreal, Quebec and is survived by his wife Sarah Del Seronde and son Miles.

Murray Abraham, Ben Barnes, Elpidia Carrillo, Essie Davis, Hannah Galway, Crispin Glover, Demetrius Grosse, David Hewlett, Andrew Lincoln, Tim Blake Nelson, Luke Roberts, Sebastian Roché, Glynn Turman and Peter Weller to its cast. The prolific Academy-Award-winning Mexican filmmaker behind “Pan’s Labyrinth,” “Hellboy,” “The Shape of Water” and “Pacific Rim” will executive produce, co-showrun and direct the series — described as a curation of eight unprecedented and genre-defining sinister narratives meant to challenge traditional notions of horror, ranging from the macabre to magical, gothic to grotesque or classically creepy. Two of the eight tales are original works by del Toro.
The streaming platform also announced that Panos Cosmatos (“Mandy”), Jennifer Kent (“The Babadook”) and Vincenzo Natali (“Hannibal”) will write and direct singular episodes for the show, which has started production in Toronto.

Bleak and beautiful, bombastic and lyrical, The Colony feels like Denis Villeneuve making Waterworld or Alejandro G. Iñárritu tackling The Road Warrior. It is a slightly familiar story that rises well above its station with jaw dropping cinematography, visual FXs and vistas that are quintessentially cinematic.

According to almost every movie made on the subject, the future of our species and planet is pretty bleak. The question seems to be not whether we’re headed towards a dystopia but how we’ll get there, and what it will look like. Faith in humanity doesn’t put rumps in the seats, or cause streaming sites to flow. In that dour spirit, we have the sci-fi drama The Colony, the latest piece of pessimism for your consideration. I eschewed the term “entertainment,” since I prefer less gloom with my doom than this one offers.
A few years before the story of The Colony begins, the rich and privileged left Earth because of imminent disaster. Unfortunately, the new planet they found supports life but suppresses reproduction. Apparently, we...

This year the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival had a treat for the locals programmed in at the end: the International première of Swiss film-maker Tim Fehlbaum's apocalyptic science fiction action drama Tides (soon to be released state-side as The Colony). It proved popular as well, and Fehlbaum left the festival with two awards in his pocket, one of them granted by the festival's audiences. There sure was no shortage of genre films at the festival carrying messages about being careful with the environment this year, and Tides fit right in. Earth has been strip-mined and polluted to the point of having become unlivable, and all the rich folks have left for another planet while everyone else could go get extinct (topical...). Unfortunately, a few...
