Chicago – Exceptional films that reflect honest relationships are rare, but the latest film “Don’t Make Me Go” – streaming on Prime Video on July 15th – accomplishes the father/daughter dynamic with authentic situations and emotions. John Cho and Mia Isaac portray that relationship, in a film directed by Hannah Marks.
John Cho is Max, a single father raising his 16-year-old daughter Wallace (Mia Isaac), a child from his failed marriage. When Max finds out he has a rare bone tumor, he takes Wallace on a road trip to meet her estranged mother. Winding from California to New Orleans, the pair face off during a series of incidences, including Wallace staying out all night with strangers in Texas. Despite all the travails, they begin to come to terms with the truth, including that mother reluctant to meet her daughter. It all ends up in a surprising conclusion, and changes all lives along the way.

The streaming era has led to an explosion of content opportunities, as the rush into an on-demand world has created unlimited shelf space. While nowhere near the size of other comic book powerhouses like Marvel or DC, Idw Publishing marked its 20th anniversary this year. Idw launched Idw Entertainment in 2013, and has developed properties such as “Wynona Earp” — which returns for its long-awaited fourth season on Syfy next year — and “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency.” Currently, Idw has four series in development with Netflix, including the Ian Somerholder-led “V Wars” (pictured above) and the long-gestating “Locke & Key” adaptation from Carlton Cuse. TheWrap spoke with Lydia Antonini, president of Idw Entertainment, about being a smaller comic book-based production outfit and why they’ll never do an overall deal with a studio or streamer. The below has been edited and condensed for clarity. Also Read: Hulu Raises Price on Live TV...

Love him or hate him, writer Max Landis always seems to have his hands on some big projects. The writer is probably best known for his work on the film “Chronicle” and the BBC America series “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency,” as well as the Netflix Original film “Bright.” But unless you follow his career closely, you probably don’t realize that he’s been working behind-the-scenes in a ton of projects that either haven’t been made or have been rewritten since, including “Power Rangers.” Well, according to a not-so-subtle hint, it appears that he has his hands on a horror classic for a future film.

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency won't be back for a third season, it's been decided...
Fans probably knew that a third season of Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency was far from a sure thing, and sadly BBC America has announced its cancellation.
The sometimes crazy, always fun, undefinable show has often been critically favoured. Its manic dialogue and at times nonsensical-seeming storylines weren't for everyone, but for those who enjoyed a good puzzle, tight writing, and unbelievably lovable characters, hopes were high for a renewal. But it wasn't meant to be.
In the end, ratings for Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency were just too low. Averaging 248,000 viewers each week with a .07 share, the series is down only slightly from its season 1 average of 287,000 weekly viewers and a .09 share of the key demographic. Although these numbers were comparable to fellow BBC America series Orphan Black in its fifth season,...

The first season of BBC America's Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency earned pretty low ratings, but that's generally true of shows on this little cable channel. The thing is, these series often originate in UK, or are international co-productions of some sort. In the case of this show, Netflix distributes it outside the Us, so their continue interest comes into play where cancellations or renewals are concerned. So, will Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency be cancelled or renewed for season three? Stay tuned. There’s nothing more delightful than watching Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman revel in all of that cheeky queer subtext on “Sherlock.” We have the show’s out creator, Mark Gatiss, to thank for it. Gatiss is ditching the undertones for overtones in “Queers,” a new short series commemorating the 50th anniversary of The Sexual Offences Act (sic), which partially decriminalized sex between two men in the U.K. Featuring performances from Britain’s brightest out actors, such as Alan Cumming, Ben Whishaw, and Russell Tovey, each episode is written by a different prominent Lgbt writer. BBC America released a first trailer for the series today, and it’s flecked with all sorts of period costume magic.
According to the BBC, the show is a series of monologues from different figures throughout the fifty years, using inspiration from 1957’s Wolfenden Report, the HIV crisis and the 1967 Sexual Offence Act itself.

Without an introduction, without even a word from creators Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson, the “Broad City” Comic-Con panel began by screening an entire episode. The hilarious and inspired sixth episode of Season 4 was filled with admirable moments, delighting the attendees who packed the expansive Indigo Ballroom in San Diego, but one aspect stood out:
Every time the name “Donald Trump” came up, it was bleeped (just like the many swear words uttered by Abbi and Ilana during their New York City adventures). But no one brought it up after the episode ended. Neither Jacobson or Glazer said anything during their 10 minutes spent previewing Season 4, and no fan asked about it during the ensuing Q&A.

The cast and producers of “Star Trek: Discovery” have no patience for the backlash they’ve been getting online over the show’s commitment to depicting the universe as a wide and varied place.
“‘Star Trek’ has always been pictorial of diversity and inclusion and universality,” star Sonequa Martin-Green said Saturday, July 22 during the “Discovery” panel presentation at Comic-Con. “It’s one of the main reasons it’s so important to so many people to this day. So if you say you love the legacy of ‘Star Trek’ but you don’t love that, you’ve missed [the point].”

Welcome back to “Westworld,” where your dreams come true, and maybe even some of your nightmares too.
Saturday’s Comic-Con panel for “Westworld” was far less creepy than the show itself, or so the robots would have us to believe. Series co-creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy gathered together Ben Barnes, Ingrid Bolso Berdal, Ed Harris, Luke Hemsworth, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Simon Quarterman, Rodrigo Santoro, Angela Sarafyan, Jimmi Simpson, Tessa Thompson, Evan Rachel Wood, Shannon Woodward, and Jeffrey Wright. While they couldn’t answer too many questions without revealing spoilers, the series will eventually be returning for a second season in 2018.

The highlight of the “Stranger Things” Comic-Con panel was the Season 2 trailer, and not just for the fans. Everyone on stage, from moderator Patton Oswalt to new cast member Paul Reiser, were visibly shaken by the wild first look at the new season.
Their reaction combined with how little they were allowed to say only added to the mystery surrounding the upcoming episodes. Oswalt repeatedly chastised himself for asking questions that were too spoiler-centric, but a few telling answers were given, especially about the new cast and character arcs for Season 2.
After speaking with the creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, and producer Shawn Levy to kick off the panel, Oswalt brought out the cast, including Natalia Dyer, Joe Keery, David Harbour, Matthew Modine, Caleb McLaughlin, Gaten Matarazzo, Noah Schnapp, Finn Wolfhard, and Millie Bobby Brown.

“Stranger Things” took the streaming world by storm. No one was really prepared for its note-perfect love letter to 1980s genre films and its winning cast of young stars.
But “Stranger Things” Season 2 is set to debut at a time when everyone’s love for horror should be peaking: Halloween. The kids are back for more adventures this October, and Netflix just released a new trailer to show what’s in store for the people of Hawkins, Indiana.
Season 2 will pick up on Halloween 1984, about a year after the events of the first season. While Will Byers (Noah Schnapps) was recovered from the Upside Down, he wasn’t unscathed. Not only is he puking up what looks to be monster-slugs into the bathroom sink on the sly, but he’s still suffering from Ptsd, which his mom Joyce (Winona Ryder) is frantic to help him through.

In this Indiewire exclusive clip from the upcoming episode of BBC America’s “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency,” we find Todd (Elijah Wood) getting the bad cop/bad cop shakedown from detectives Estevez (Neil Brown Jr.) and Zimmerfield (Richard Schiff).
The detective duo seems to know all there is to know about his sister’s illness, the fallout with his band, and his suspicious presence at not one but three active crime scenes. And Todd just digs himself in deeper when he tries to come to his own defense. The clip ends with him sitting speechless, getting hard looks from the inquisitive detectives, and smack in the middle of maybe more trouble than he can manage.

To adapt any Douglas Adams property, one must be confident, ambitious, foolhardy and willing to fail big time. Creator Max Landis is all of those things, and for all of its faults, at least his take on “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency” is wholly its own spastic, frantic and technicolor beast.
Adams’ books are not necessarily sacred texts (some may disagree), but his absolute mastery of the absurd balanced with his satirical take on human nature and an overarching cosmic view is difficult to approximate, much less imitate. Even his most adapted series “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” has had its share of tepid if not cringe-worthy transitions to the screen.

With the lesser known “Dirk Gently,” more license is given because its story and the author’s observational tone are less accessible.

BBC America already has one wacky British time traveler on its schedule, but with all of time and space at your disposal, there’s surely room for one more. Enter “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency,” a completely bonkers series based on the novels by Douglas Adams.
Created by Max Landis, the series is a sci-fi mystery with comedic sensibility and a helluva lot of storylines. Like the 2012 TV adaptation before it, “Dirk Gently” dispenses with the book’s plot — which some have proclaimed unfilmable — in favor of an original mystery. Landis’ version also dispenses with all of the book’s characters save for the titular detective himself.
