Exclusive: Blackwater Pictures, the British indie production company behind the buzzy biopic about the life of veteran Snooker player Jimmy White, has set up what they describe as a “multi-million-pound” fund to support commercially-minded independent British films.
Helmed by Kevin Harvey and Antoine Dixon-Bellot, Blackwater Pictures will commit to supporting five projects as part of a slate focused on emerging directors. The fund will prioritize “commercial independent British films,” organizers said today.
The fund is being managed in collaboration with BAFTA-nominated producer Tiernan Hanby (The Karman Line, Summit Fever, Heavyweight) of Pin Sharp Pictures and Simon Marriott of development & production company Shout Loud Creative. Money for the fund was raised through private equity and personal funds.
The slate currently includes Antecedent, the directorial feature debut of Dan Bronzite. He is best known for his supernatural horror Long Time Dead produced for Working Title Films/Universal...

Exclusive: Actor Steven Waddington (The Imitation Game) has penned a screenplay that he will direct based on the life of veteran Snooker player Jimmy White, with Aneurin Barnard (Dunkirk) and Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) signed on to star.
Barnard — best known for his breakout in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk but also has credits such as The Goldfinch and the BBC’s popular 2016 War & Peace adaptation — will play White in the pic. Producers told us the film will condense the life and career of the colorful six-time Snooker World Championship finalist into “one crazy night” during which he “is forced to confront his darker side.”
Produced by Black Water Pictures and Lipsync Productions, the feature shoots in London this April. Winstone and his long-term manager, Michael Wiggs, are also on board as co-producers. The film will mark Waddington’s feature directorial debut.

Actor Andrew Garfield is one of the most influential people in the world who gained recognition after he portrayed the character of Peter Parker a.k.a., Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man. Directed by Marc Webb, The Amazing Spider-Man movies served as the reboot of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, which starred Tobey Maguire as the titular character.
Andrew Garfield appeared opposite Emma Stone in the movie, and upon its release, the movie received a positive response from the audience and the critics. The chemistry between the actors, the visual effects of the movie, and the musical score were highly appreciated, and even though certain plot elements were criticized, the movie became the seventh-highest-grossing movie of 2012. A sequel followed it in 2014, which received mixed reviews. The actor later reprised his role as Spider-Man for Spider-Man: No Way Home, and fans cannot wait to see him back in action as the superhero on-screen.

Hayley Atwell has reportedly joined the cast of director Duncan Jones’ animated Rogue Trooper movie, based on the 2000 Ad comic strip of the same name. It’s even wrapped filming!
Word that Moon and Source Code director Duncan Jones was attached to a film adaptation of the 2000 Ad comic strip Rogue Trooper first broke over five years ago, before the world descended into a maelstrom of global disease, military invasions and AI-driven societal collapse – exactly the sort of dystopian stuff you might expect to find in those British sci-fi comics.
After years of eerie silence, though, it sounds as though the adaptation is much further along than we’d previously thought, with Variety reporting that Rogue Trooper has been cast and is already well into production. It’ll star Aneurin Barnard as the title’s genetically-enhanced super soldier. Supporting him will be Hayley Atwell, Jack Lowden (who also appeared in...

Duncan Jones made an incredible debut with his Sam Rockwell-starring sci-fi, Moon. However, his follow-ups haven’t collected as much acclaim with the Groundhog Day-on-a-train thriller Source Code, his step into the big-budget franchise world with Warcraft, and his high-concept Netflix sci-fi, Mute. For years, Jones has been developing an adaptation of the comic Rogue Trooper, which is to be an animated feature. The production has been rolling along, and Variety has revealed the cast of actors that Jones has been able to compile for the film.
Aneurin Barnard, Hayley Atwell and Jack Lowden are reportedly said to be the main cast in the lead roles for the science-fiction animated film. Plot: The story of Marie-Laure, a blind French girl and her father, Daniel LeBlanc, who flee German-occupied Paris with a legendary diamond to keep it from falling into the hands of the Nazis. Relentlessly pursued by a cruel Gestapo officer who seeks to possess the stone for his own selfish means, Marie-Laure and Daniel soon find refuge in St. Malo, where they take up residence with a reclusive uncle who transmits clandestine radio broadcasts as part of the resistance. Yet here in this once-idyllic seaside city, Marie-Laure’s path also collides inexorably with the unlikeliest of kindred spirits: Werner, a brilliant teenager enlisted by Hitler’s regime to track down illegal broadcasts, who instead shares a secret connection to Marie-Laure as well as her faith in humanity and the possibility of hope.

Desperation often leads to violence when someone’s back is against the wall. Humans are animals, and when cornered, they’ll lash out, throwing caution to the win as part of a fight or flight response. In Lionsgate‘s Desperation Road trailer, a mother protects herself against a corrupted officer of the law, leading to gunfire, bewilderment, and a snap decision to flee the scene. Mistakes can catch up to the best of us, and secrets unravel easily when the past comes back to haunt you.
“In a small Mississippi town, justice and the law are two very different things,” reads the official synopsis for Desperation Road. “Academy Award Winner Mel Gibson, Garret Hedlund, and Willa Fitzgerald star in a modern noir thriller based on the acclaimed novel by Michael Farris Smith about two lost souls tortured by the mistakes of their past and bound by a secret that keeps them running.

Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield took the internet by storm (as they should!) after presenting together at the Oscars ceremony this year. Tweets were exchanged and a lot of feelings were felt. And now it's been announced (via Deadline) that the pair will co-star in a new project together a romantic comedy film titled "We Live In Time."
It's a pleasant change from their recent filmography. Pugh appeared in a multitude of different genre-bending roles — Ari Aster's horror film "Midsommar," Olivia Wilde's "Don't Worry Darling," along with her superhero responsibilities in Marvel Studios' "Black Widow" and "Hawkeye." Garfield was recently seen in Lin-Manuel Miranda's "Tick, Tick... Boom!," Michael Showalter's "The Eyes of Tammy Faye," and his terrific television outing in Hulu's "Under the Banner of Heaven." The performers haven't appeared in a romantic comedy in a very long while, and this one's certainly shaping up to be an exciting project.

We're slowly starting to learn more about [Russell T. Davies](http://(https://www.empireonline.com/people/russell-t-davies/) plans for the 60th anniversary specials of Doctor Who, which will see the return of David Tennant as the Doctor and Catherine Tate as Donna Noble. Now we know that Aneurin Barnard will play a mysterious new character, while Jemma Redgrave returns as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, the Chief Scientific Officer and head of Unit.
Barnard, who has been seen in the likes of Peaky Blinders, The Goldfinch and the recent (and recently cancelled) 1899 is playing someone named Roger ap Gwilliam (which sounds like an anagram to us).
The specials will lead up to the introduction of Ncuti Gatwa as the 15th Doctor, with his Time Lord debuting this Christmas. The special episodes, meanwhile, will air in November.

For all of the changes that roil Hollywood every week, its operations remain resolute in their conservatism: Go with who you know. Back in 2001, a 35-year-old Toby Emmerich took the reins as New Line Cinema’s president of production after the departure of his mentor, Michael De Luca. In 2008, Emmerich became New Line’s president and CEO, reporting to Warner Bros.’ then-president Alan Horn.
Cut to 2022 and David “Zas” Zaslav is in charge of building the Warner Discovery empire. Emmerich, chairman of the Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, is out; replacing him is De Luca, 59, and his lieutenant, Pamela Abdy, 48, who recently exited their jobs leading the MGM Motion Picture Group after its acquisition by Amazon. And Horn is readying his own comeback, as a consultant to Zaslav.

National Association of Theater Owners President/CEO John Fithian praised Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav for his commitment to theatrical releasing during Monday’s earnings call.
“You’re seeing the newest CEO in the business, after having studied the market for a year, describe the business model perfectly as far as we’re concerned,” Fithian told reporters at a Tuesday press conference. “If you get a movie that works well theatrically and pops, it has a window, it also means it helps that movie do better when it hits the home on streaming.”
Last year, Warner Bros. was one of the studios leading experiments with day-and-date releasing, putting all 2021 films on HBO Max and in theaters simultaneously as a way to handle the uncertainty of theaters reopening during the Covid-19 pandemic.

When I’m reviewing a movie, I try to go in cold. I want my criticism to come as organically as possible. I don’t want other people’s opinions (or even a plot synopsis or trailer) to color my perspective. This was not the correct move for “Donbass,” the latest drama from director Sergey Loznitsa.
The film takes place in 2014, at the dawn of pro-Russian unrest in Ukraine that has snowballed into the war we see dominating front pages today. It is an incredibly specific satire that, unless you are aware of the precise ideologies of Eastern Ukraine and their weak points, may not immediately register as a satire at all. After my first screening of “Donbass” (and a few minutes of confused silence), I had to contact a friend who is a scholar of Eurasian studies, do some of my own research, and then watch it again.

You think you’ve got mother-daughter problems – but no! Post-op Laura pushes her daughter to leave the nest again and become an autonomous adult, and mopey stuck-in-a-rut aspiring artist Andy resists. Par for the course.
What upends it all? To celebrate Andy’s 30th birthday, Laura takes her out to lunch and a new round of nagging when all hell breaks loose. In a bravura set piece that recalls the crazy museum bombing that launches Donna Tartt’s “The Goldfinch,” a spurned boyfriend enters the mall restaurant, shoots his ex-girlfriend who’s leaving him for med school and keeps firing. Blood simple, he targets Andy, who’s wearing her police uniform from her night job answering 911 calls.

Warner Bros’ Clint Eastwood Western Cry Macho wasn’t tough at the box office this past weekend, opening to $4.4 million at 3,967 theaters in third place. The pic lacked grit in homes on HBO Max as well, pulling in only 693,0000 households stateside over the weekend according to Samba TV.
In a year of day-and-date theatrical-streaming experimentation by Warner Bros, it’s a continuing trend that when a movie is great, it translates (to a certain extent) at the box office and in the home viewership on HBO Max. And when the film doesn’t resonate in theaters, it’s also not going to in the homes; we saw this last weekend with James Wan’s Malignant, which paled on the service and in cinemas.
The latest film by Eastwood received blasé results from critics with 52% on Rotten Tomatoes and moviegoers with a B CinemaScore. Nothing to rush out to, and nothing to change the channel to.

Lionsgate’s “Spiral” is off to a decent start at the box office, with industry estimates reporting an $8.7 million opening weekend from 2,811 screens.
That result would give the “Saw” spinoff the lowest opening in the history of the gory horror franchise, falling below the previous low of $14.1 million earned in 2009 by “Saw VI,” the only film in the franchise to not gross over $100 million worldwide.
But this was to be expected, as “Spiral” has opened to roughly 200 fewer theaters than “Saw VI” and is still facing a market where 35% of theaters in the U.S. and Canada are still closed. With a $20 million production budget, the film is still on pace to turn a profit, though it falls short of independent projections of a $10 million-plus launch. It is also on course to push the lifetime gross total for the “Saw” series” to $1 billion this week, as the film also grossed $3.3 million from 16 overseas markets,...
