Billie Eilish may not have debuted at number-one on the Billboard 200 with her new album “Hit Me Hard and Soft,” but she still achieved some personal-best metrics. The album accumulated 339,000 equivalent album units, her highest total ever in a single week. Of those units, 191,000 came from traditional album sales, also her strongest result. And the lead single, “Lunch,” debuted at number-five on the Billboard Hot 100, the highest debut of her career yet. Given Eilish’s stellar track record in top Grammy categories, could we then see “Lunch” win her Record of the Year and Song of the Year again?
Eilish has already made history in both categories. She won Record of the Year in 2020 and 2021 for “Bad Guy” and “Everything I Wanted,” respectively, making her just the third artist to win that award in consecutive years; that feat had previously been achieved by Roberta Flack (“The First Time Ever I...

On a hike with his snacks of choice — his fiancé Noah Galvin and chocolate mushrooms — Ben Platt saw the light.
“I was feeling really joyful and really present with [Noah] and I think he could really sense that. We were having one of those deep talks on our walk and he was asking me to describe what was allowing me to feel that way, and I started to talk about what it feels like to be in our relationship and my love for him and I started to envision a physical manifestation of what it might look like inside my head,” Platt tells The Hollywood Reporter.
“Because I am super anxiety prone and a very stressed person generally, I imagine there’s lots of jagged edges and lots of sharp things poking out and prodding, and when I envision what love does, it doesn’t necessarily make those things disappear or replace them.

"I want to go and follow the music, but you never know what you're going to find along the way." Another new official trailer has debuted for the documentary film titled In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon, the latest from Alex Gibney following his docs on The Forever Prisoner, and Boris Becker. This first premiered at the 2023 Toronto & London Film Festivals last fall, and is already streaming on MGM+ in the US (though we missed this when it first dropped). The film follows Paul Simon inside the studio making his new album Seven Psalms while looking back on his six-decade career with countless musical peaks from Sounds of Silence to Graceland. Gibney's In Restless Dreams is supposedly the definitive musical biography of Paul Simon, one of the greatest songwriters (and performers as well) in the history of rock 'n roll. It's yet another one of these music docs...

Having a hissable, recurring villain adds that special something to any TV procedural.
Elijah Stone has been filling that role on The Rookie, tormenting members of the LAPD's Metro Division over the past two seasons (although it feels longer).
Sadly, complex villains such as Stone have recently become less of a thing on broadcast TV.
Let's look at the famed Hawaii Five-0 villain, Wo Fat, as a case study.
During the series' original run, Wo Fat was a crime boss, a red Chinese spy who answered to Peking (it was a different time) and served as the primary enemy of Steve McGarrett (played by Jack Lord).
Wo Fat (portrayed by Khigh Dhiegh) hung like a dense fog over that version, appearing in 15 episodes over nine of the show's 12 seasons.
In the rebooted series, Wo Fat (Mark Dacascos) was a crime boss and former Chinese Ministry of Interior agent. appeared...

Elvis Presley‘s Graceland is on the National Register of Historic Places and was named a National Historic Landmark. It is a must-see for music fans who travel to Memphis, Tennessee, to view items which are part of the King of Rock and Roll’s legacy. However, it was also where a sitting United States president and Japan’s prime minister unleashed their inner rock stars, to the delight of Elvis’ daughter Lisa Marie and his ex-wife Priscilla Presley.
Graceland has only hosted 1 sitting U.S. president
In 2006, United States President George W. Bush visited Elvis Presley’s Graceland home. He was the first sitting president to do so.
However, the visit wasn’t directly for President Bush and his wife, Laura. The visit was for the benefit of Japan’s prime minister.

Sofia Coppola's Priscilla is now showing exclusively on Mubi in many countries.Priscilla.Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla (2023) is deceptively soft to the touch. In adapting Priscilla Presley’s 1985 Elvis and Me memoir, the filmmaker brings an astonishing life story to the big screen, but also all of the beautiful, enviable objects that line the cage of celebrity. From luxurious Cadillacs to a lush array of sparkly designer dresses, accessorized with equally shiny handguns, these markers of luxury hum with palpable allure. At the same time, a sense of foreboding looms large. The opening shot lingers on the perfectly manicured feet of Cailee Spaeny’s Priscilla as they gingerly step across a shaggy, coral-pink rug. The seductive, tactile tableau conjures pleasure and comfort, yet it also foreshadows how Priscilla will sink further and further into a gilded sepulcher throughout her turbulent relationship with Elvis, embodied here by Jacob Elordi. In 1956, Elvis Presley appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show for the first time. Millions of people tuned in to watch his performance, and Elvis would go on to appear on the show several more times. Despite the success of his appearance, Sullivan initially did not want Elvis on his show. When asked if he would allow the young musician on, Sullivan responded with a resounding no.
Ed Sullivan did not initially want Elvis on his show

To many listeners, Elvis Presley‘s “Blue Suede Shoes” is a fun, danceable dose of early rock ‘n’ roll. On the other hand, Bob Dylan took the song’s subject matter extremely seriously. He said blue suede shoes have all the answers. That might not be the case, but Elvis’ “Blue Suede Shoes” has inspired many artists who came after him.
Bob Dylan said the shoes from Elvis Presley’s ‘Blue Suede Shoes’ ‘vibrate with life’
In his 2022 book The Philosophy of Modern Song, the “Lay Lady Lay” singer had a lot to say about “Blue Suede Shoes.” He felt there was something sacred about that type of footwear. “They neither move nor speak, yet they vibrate with life, and contain the infinite power of the sun,” he wrote. Dylan may have been alluding to a passage from Psalm 135 that discusses idols being unable to move or speak.

Paul Simon has been in the Grammy news cycle, partly because his newest album, “Seven Psalms,” is up for Best Folk Album, marking the singer’s first nomination in over 15 years. However, Simon has also been mentioned due to Taylor Swift’s “Midnights.” No, you’re not reading that wrong. Simon is one of only four artists to win the coveted Album of the Year Grammy three times; the others are Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra and Swift. But Swift is looking to break that record this year, so many are revisiting those other three artists and their discographies, perhaps to determine whether Swift has really earned surpassing them in the record books. Simon himself has quite the trio of Aoty winners; they’re very different records both thematically and in terms of his own personal history. His last winner, “Graceland,” officially secured his place in Grammy history.

Elvis Presley’s love for Christmas was legendary. From extravagant holiday gifts to over-the-top decorations, the King knew how to celebrate. So, it’s appropriate that the TV network that’s made Christmas a huge part of its brand has filmed not one but two different Christmas movies at Presley’s home of Graceland.
Hallmark Channel’s Christmas at Graceland and Christmas at Graceland: Home for the Holidays both offer viewers a peek inside Elvis’s iconic Memphis estate. One also features an appearance from Elvis’s former wife, Priscilla Presley.

Sofia Coppola zeroed in on her artistic signatures early on: The very first shot in her debut as a director, the 1998 short film Lick the Star, shows a teenage girl staring pensively out a car window. She did it again with a shot of Kirsten Dunst in a taxi in The Virgin Suicides (actually via her brother, Roman Coppola, who shot second unit). “And then when we were shooting Lost in Translation,” Coppola says over a recent breakfast in a West Village café, “I was like, ‘Roman, can you get the girl-out-the-window shot?...

Sofia Coppola reassured the late Lisa Marie Presley that “Priscilla” was being made with a certain “sensitivity” to the legacy of Elvis Presley.
The writer-director responded to two emails sent by Lisa Marie in September 2022 that objected to the initial script. Coppola adapted the screenplay from Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me,” with Priscilla serving as an executive producer on the film. The emails were obtained by Variety and IndieWire confirmed their validity with Coppola’s representatives. Distributor A24 declined to comment.
“I hope that when you see the final film you will feel differently,” Coppola wrote to Lisa Marie at the time, “and understand I’m taking great care in honoring your mother, while also presenting your father with sensitivity and complexity.”
A representative for Coppola told IndieWire that the auteur’s statement “was in fact in her email response to Lisa Marie.”

One of the country’s most prolific musicians, Paul Simon was born on October 13, 1941, in Newark, New Jersey, and grew up in Queens, New York City. His love for music and gift for songwriting began at a young age, and he has enjoyed a varied career for over six decades.
Simon’s first successes came as one-half of a duo formed with his childhood friend, Art Garfunkel. Their debut album in 1964, “Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.,” flopped. However, the counterculture movement of the 1960s was just beginning, and before long, the duo’s folk/rock blend would become the anthem for that generation, and “The Sound of Silence” became their first hit.
Fueled by Simon’s masterful storytelling, their unique sound and contributions to the 1967 film “The Graduate,” Simon and Garfunkel became two of the most successful and notable musicians of the time. In 1970, the two released their fifth and final studio album,...

Wind gusts quivered the tree limbs, rainfall ricocheted off the roads, and in an instant, power cut off at the old Opera House on Elm Street in Camden, Maine, scuttling screenings there at the Camden International Film Festival.
With that mid-September atmospheric outburst, Hurricane Lee did in the scheduled U.S. premiere of Alex Gibney’s new film In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon. Now, the honor of hosting the American debut goes to the Hamptons International Film Festival this Friday, where the documentary screens as the festival Centerpiece (Simon will appear in person there for a conversation moderated by Rolling Stone’s David Fear). On Sunday, the film plays across the pond at the BFI London Film Festival.

The Beatles released their final album, Let It Be, in 1970, the same year Simon & Garfunkel released their final album, Bridge Over Troubled Water. Paul Simon himself felt The Beatles’ breakup wasn’t comparable to Simon & Garfunkel’s breakup on an artistic level. He also discussed how Simon & Garfunkel’s split negatively affected his finances.
Paul Simon felt his breakup wouldn’t be as impactful as The Beatles’ breakup
During a 1972 interview with Rolling Stone, Simon revealed George Harrison wanted to hear Paul Simon, the first album Simon released after his duo dissolved. “George Harrison said to me, ‘I’m really curious to hear your album, because now you hear sort of what we are like individually, since the group broke up, and I know what you were like together, and I’d like to hear what you’re like individually,'” Simon recalled.

The first thing to say about Alex Gibney’s “In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon” is that it’s three-and-a-half hours long. Normally I wouldn’t lead with that daunting fact, especially since the film is mostly marvelous: a documentary that every Paul Simon fan on earth should want to see and experience. But will they?
I raise the issue only because “In Restless Dreams” has come into the Toronto Film Festival without a distributor, and let’s just be honest: The 209-minute running time, when you hear about it, doesn’t exactly sound…user-friendly. Gibney, of course, is one of the renaissance masters of contemporary documentary, a filmmaker of staggering skill and eclecticism. On occasion, he sprinkles in a music doc, which is clearly a labor of love for him. If you’ve never seen “Mr. Dynamite: The Rise of James Brown,” it’s sensational. And Gibney...

It’s been a Toronto Film Festival like few others. The writers and actors strikes meant that many A-listers opted not to touch down in Canada this year, depriving the gathering of film lovers of the star-studded red carpets and Q&As that make Toronto so memorable. Even if this year’s festival was starved for glamour, it was still a good opportunity to get a clearer picture of the awards race — and to check the pulse of Hollywood at a tumultuous time for the industry.

Paul Simon may not yet have come to terms with the hearing loss in his left ear, but he is “beginning to.” The 81-year-old singer-songwriter talked about his ailment and ability to continue performing at a post-screening Q&a for In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday.

At first, the title of Alex Gibney’s “In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon” seems as if it could be a warning about the director’s approach in this supersized documentary. The film, its title seems to be saying, is about the music of Simon, not the life or the loves or the times of Simon. But it turns out that the music is a gateway to all those other things in this three-and-a-half hour film that covers most of what you’d want to know about the seminal singer-songwriter.
Partly, that’s because Gibney’s jumping off point is Simon’s new album, “Seven Psalms,” an uncommonly personal and soul-searching work for the man who’s been writing songs for seven decades. A half-hour meditation on faith and mortality that came to Simon in a dream and was written during a time when he’d begun to...

“People used to say I had my finger on the pulse,” Paul Simon tells Alex Gibney early in his artfully composed documentary, In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon. “I just have my finger out there and the pulse is running under it.” Either way, few people have had as central a role in American pop music and culture as Simon. Gibney, best-known for exposes including The Inventor, about Elizabeth Holmes’ tech-company fraud, and Going Clear, on Scientology, turns out to be the ideal director to explore Simon’s long, varied run.
Simon invited Gibney into his home studio in Wimberly, Texas, where the cameras watch him tinker with the sound on his latest album, Seven Psalms (released in May) and talk about his career, inspirations, aging and what the loss of hearing in his left ear has meant. With that album as an anchor, the film mostly flashes back and forth in time,...

Priscilla Presley may be the former wife of the King of Rock ‘n Roll, but Sofia Coppola is the daughter of the Godfather of Cinema.
Coppola, who wrote and directed “Priscilla” based on Presley’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me,” told The Hollywood Reporter that she could relate to Presley’s story of living in someone else’s shadow. Coppola is, of course, the daughter of Oscar winner Francis Ford Coppola.
“Oh, it would be a juicy, glamorous story,” Coppola said of reading Presley’s memoir. “But then I was struck by how much I connected with it emotionally. I thought it was just going to be a fun adventure, and I was surprised by how relatable her story was.”
The “Virgin Suicides” director continued, “I know from my family what it’s like to be inside a show business family. I know that growing up, people are looking at you in a different way.

Paul Simon, 81, has revealed that he is currently experiencing hearing loss in his left ear – and may never perform again.
The loss occurred while he was recording his new album, Seven Psalms. He assumed that this was temporary and that his hearing would return, but so far that has not been the case. “Quite suddenly, I lost most of the hearing in my left ear, and nobody has an explanation for it,” he told the London Times. “So everything became more difficult.”
At first, Simon was frustrated with his hearing loss, but because he thought it would pass, he was not angry.
Now, he has to face the possibility that he may not be able to perform again.

For seven years, Elvis Presley performed multiple residencies in Las Vegas. The king of rock and roll thrilled concertgoers at the International Hotel twice yearly. Presley performed twice a night in a run of 636 shows. However, the fun didn’t always stop after the curtain fell. The entertainer once admitted jam sessions sometimes ran “until daylight.”

These days, Pedro Pascal is one of the internet’s favorite stars. In just a few years, the actor has arisen from a breakout star of Narcos to a legitimate leading man. Of course, Game of Thrones is a big part of that ascension as well. But despite his current success, Pascal has no qualms about looking back at his early career, including his guest appearance on NYPD Blue.

Origins is a recurring series giving artists a space to break down everything that went into their latest release. Today, Sego’s Spencer Petersen digs into “Tandang,” the first preview of the band’s upcoming album.
Los Angeles-based art-punk band Sego have unveiled their new single “Tandang” in anticipation of their upcoming third studio album. It marks the group’s first new release since their 2020 EP Life of Pam.
Self-described as “art-punk by non-punk non-artists,” Sego toy with the fine balance of genres while embodying the avant-garde. First making a name for themselves in the LA music scene by hosting experimental DIY shows at their warehouse in Echo Park known as The Cube, their signature sound incorporates danceable punk injected with hints of funk, dance music, and indie pop.
The new single “Tandang” roots itself in electro-funk grooves shifting in and out of a throbbing, percussive instrumental and sparse bassline.
