Fiona Apple is the go-to songwriter for exorcising your romantic demons, ruing the ones you loved, the ones who didn’t love you back, the ones you pushed away amid yet another freefall of your own design. She’s also the go-to singer for three studio comedy auteurs: Michael Showalter, Judd Apatow, and Paul Feig.
Apple’s songs have featured in three of their films — Apple wrote the original song “Dull Tool” for Apatow’s “This Is 40,” capturing a decades-long marriage at its breaking point. Elsewhere, her epic ball of romantic resignation “Cosmonauts,” off the 2020 album “Fetch the Bolt Cutters,” was also originally meant for that film. Meanwhile, her classic cabaret-inspired love song “Paper Bag,” about having too much emotional baggage to enter into a new relationship she wants “so bad, oh it kills,” featured in Feig’s “Bridesmaids” in a montage of Annie (Kristen Wiig) making cupcakes as...

Judd Apatow spoke to Vulture in a recent interview about the current state of television, including why the trend of rewatching older series and licensing pacts between streamers is “scary.”
“I’m of two minds,” Apatow said. “There’s a part of me that’s an audience member: I’ll go back and rewatch ‘Deadwood’ or ‘NYPD Blue’ or any of the David Milch shows. I understand why people like the comfort food of television. But it’s a scary thing as a creator of television, because of all the streamers going, ‘Wait a second. We don’t need to spend $200 million on a new show. We can just bring back “Barnaby Jones.”‘ They’re going to do it, then you’ll get fewer new shows.”
The “This Is 40” writer-director continued, “They realize, Oh wait, Netflix can just buy shows from HBO, and I would assume they’re cheaper than making new ones.

We live in an era where we all know exactly what “content” means – or, rather, what it has transformed into. But is it something that is harmful to the industry as a whole or do the benefits outweigh that? Well, Judd Apatow has a few things to share…
Apatow gave his thoughts on the relation between the penny-pinching ways of studios and the seemingly constant passing back and forth of programs due to contracts that limit when a movie/TV show is available to stream on any given platform. “It’s a scary thing as a creator of television, because of all the streamers going, ‘Wait a second. Judd Apatow is warning against the rise of rewatching and the implications it has for streamers not to greenlight new series.
The writer/director/producer told Vulture that Warner Bros. Discovery and HBO licensing shows like “Sex and the City” to Netflix is just a recent example of limiting audiences’ “content” options, which is no doubt “cheaper than making new ones.”
“I’m of two minds,” Apatow said of the rise of viewers rediscovering older series. “There’s a part of me that’s an audience member: I’ll go back and rewatch ‘Deadwood’ or ‘NYPD Blue’ or any of the David Milch shows. Filmmaker Judd Apatow disagrees with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ decision to classify Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ starring Margot Robbie as an adapted screenplay rather than original.
“It’s insulting to the writers to say they were working off of existing material,” the ‘Knocked Up’ and ‘This Is 40’ director wrote on X/Twitter, reports Variety.
“There was no existing material or story. There was a clear box.”
It was reported that ‘Barbie’ will compete for a best adapted screenplay nomination in the Oscar race, despite campaigning for original screenplay.
Each awards body and voting group has its own subset of rules for movies in terms of which screenplay category they can submit or ultimately be nominated. Many films about pre-existing characters — such as previous Oscar nominees ‘Toy Story 3’, ‘Borat 2’, ‘Before Sunset’ and ‘Before Midnight’ — were ultimately classified as adapted screenplays.

A nearly unrecognizable Sofia Vergara playing a cartel boss, a new retelling of the story of the Uruguayan rugby team that crash-landed in the Andes in 1972, Kevin Hart assembling a team for a daring heist and Dan Levy dealing with loss and grief are among the standout projects hitting Netflix this January.
Spanish director J.A. Bayona’s Society of the Snow lands on Netflix on Jan. 4. The film is the latest cinematic retelling of the miraculous story of the Uruguayan rugby team that crash-landed on a glacier in the heart of the Andes in 1972, with the survivors being forced to resort to extreme measures to stay alive. After debuting in Venice, Society of the Snow has picked up plenty of awards on the international film festival circuit, and it recently made the shortlists in four categories for the 2024 Academy Awards, including best international feature film.

Ending the year in signs is the hilarious, adventurous, sharp-tongued era of Sagittarius.
There’s truly nothing like them. They are quirky, mysterious and full of life. While they naturally grab the attention in the room, they feel most comfortable when they’re in their lonesome.
Sagittarius is the jack-of-trades sign; the sign that takes up space in every all industries — whether they be an actor, comedian or a bus driver — their versatility allows them to do it all. And that flexibility helps fuel their “I’ll try anything once” mindset. To them, what is life if you’re not living it to your fullest? The only thing you have to beware of is their slick mouth. It was revealed last year that Judd Apatow was developing a sequel to This Is 40, the “sort-of” sequel to Knocked Up. This Is 50 would catch up with Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) in the next stage of their lives, and although the project is still in the works, it appears to have been put on the back burner for now.
While speaking with The Playlist, Judd Apatow said he’s got a new project written and ready to go once the SAG-AFTRA strike concludes. “I wrote a film; I’m just waiting for all these strikes to end to see if they’ll allow me to make it,” Apatow said. “So, my life is in Fran Drescher’s hands. As it’s always been.” He wouldn’t spill any details on the new project, only to say that it would not be This Is 50.

Jason Segel is opening up about his time spent on “How I Met Your Mother”, revealing that he was “really unhappy” with his life and career during the final years of the show. The 43-year-old actor, and current star of the Apple TV+ series “Shrinking”, reflected on the hit CBS sitcom during a roundtable interview for The Hollywood Reporter.
“There was a period in my life and career around the last couple of years of ‘How I Met Your Mother’ where things were firing in both movies and TV, and everyone was telling me how well it was going and I was really unhappy,” he revealed.
About a father named Ted recounting his adventures of living with his friends in New York City, “How I Met Your Mother” ran for nine seasons from 2005 to 2014. During that time, Segel played Marshall Eriksen alongside Josh Radnor as Ted Mosby, Alyson Hannigan as Lily Aldrin,...

Leslie Mann and Iris Apatow turned the 2024 Chanel cruise show into a mother-daughter date night. On May 9, Mann and Apatow attended the fashion brand's latest resortwear presentation in Los Angeles, wearing Chanel outfits and matching red lipstick for the occasion. Standing side by side on the red carpet, the duo looked almost identical in their coordinated ensembles. Like Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson or Reese Witherspoon and Ava Phillippe, Mann and Apatow's lookalike status is worthy of a double take.
As they modeled for the camera, the duo also struck similar poses, highlighting their uncanny resemblance. Even with invisible eyebrows, Apatow was undeniably her mother's doppelgänger. For years, the comparisons have poured in, following the stars across every joint red carpet appearance. Still, time continues to reveal even more striking similarities between the mother-daughter duo, including a shared appreciation for designer fashion, apparently.

On Tuesday, May 2, 2023, talks between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers fell apart over issues pertaining to, among other things, the paltry residuals writers get for streaming revenue. The WGA said in a statement that pay had become so low that the AMPTP had essentially created "a gig economy inside a union work force." The WGA was also concerted with the disturbing, and very real possibility that authors could ostensibly be replaced by studio-owned AI programs.

Now that the first season of “Shrinking” is fully available to all binge-watchers, it feels particularly urgent to highlight this Apple TV+ series’ lead actor, co-creator, writer and executive producer, Jason Segel. Despite the impressive list of iconic comedic characters like Marshall Eriksen (“How I Met Your Mother”) and Peter Bretter (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall”), he has never been nominated for a major TV or film award. With the rising recognition of “Shrinking” and Segel’s undeniable likability factor, the upcoming 2023 Emmy nominations could easily correct that mistake. Here are five reasons why Segel deserves a spot in the Best Comedy Actor category this year.
1. Segel has had an impressive acting career.
At the turn of the century, Judd Appatow’s “Freaks and Geeks” (1999-2000) put Segel on the map as a promising comedy actor. “How I Met Your Mother” (2005-2014) brought him worldwide fame as the adorable, silly goof Marshall Eriksen.

This post contains spoilers for the two-episode premiere of "Barry" season 4.
Paul Rudd is a funny guy. He's funny on screen in roles in movies like "Ant-Man," "This Is 40," and "Clueless," but he's also apparently funny off-screen, where he seems to lend ideas to writers on both projects he's a part of and projects he has nothing to do with. In a recent interview, Rudd revealed that Judd Apatow used a real-life argument from Rudd's marriage in the "Knocked Up" script, and Marvel President Kevin Feige even says it was his idea to explore the quantum realm in the latest "Ant-Man" sequel.
It sounds like the actor loves to pitch ideas that might make for good comedy, and he did just that in a conversation with "Barry" co-creator and star Bill Hader that led to one of the show's most eclectic music choices. Hader appeared on The Prestige TV...

In 2009, Chris O’Dowd bought a one-way ticket to Los Angeles. Back then, he was known as the dishevelled, 6ft 4in star of The It Crowd, playing work-shy Roy “Have you tried turning it on and off again?” Trenneman. On the cusp of 30, he’d just been told that, after three series of the Channel 4 sitcom, the show’s budget was being slashed. There was a threat that the next run would be cut down from six to four episodes. “I remember thinking, ‘Well, if I’m in a really big show on TV, and I can’t really pay my rent with what that would pay, then this isn’t a system that’s sustainable for me,’” he says, sipping from a bottle of fizzy water. Just as well, then, that the flight to America changed his life. He met his future wife there. And backstage at a Louis Ck gig,...

Freaks and Geeks barely lasted one season. But the majority of the Freaks and Geeks cast was a close-knit crew that worked hard. Maybe it was their naivete or youth, but the ensemble cast was really something special to watch.
Jason Segel said the cast constantly worked on their lines. They found ways to improve their characters, even during their time off.
How ‘Freaks and Geeks’ went from a canceled show to a cult following
Freaks and Geeks was a teen dramedy that first aired in 1999. The show followed a pair of siblings as they navigated the social scene of their high school back in the early 1980s.
The show was canceled after only airing 12 episodes. But it drew a tremendous cult following and was the springboard from which many successful actors got their start.

It’s hard to believe that Paul Rudd originally won over audiences with his on-screen personas more than 30 years ago. The hero of Marvel’s Ant-Man trilogy received his first major break with Clueless in 1995, but when he teamed up with regular collaborator Judd Apatow, he found his comedic voice. The two collaborated on several comedic films in the 2000s, including The 40-Year-Old Virgin, This is 40, and Knocked Up.
While filming Knocked Up, Rudd found some inspiration from his own life. Let’s take a look at the actor and how he got some real-life marriage counseling from his movie.

Rudd has featured in a wide variety of films and television shows in his long career. Initially, his claim to fame was mostly in comedies. He stood out it in comedy movies like Anchorman and The 40-Year-Old-Virgin. From there, he found a familiar niche in the comedy genre that served him well. But being a comic actor wasn’t exactly what Rudd originally had in mind.
“I’ve been a comedy fan since I was a kid, although I didn’t think that was the route I was going to go as an actor,” Rudd once said in an interview with NJ.

Paul Rudd has been a beloved actor for nearly three decades, with his breakthrough role coming in the 90s teen classic Clueless. His performance as Josh Lucas in the movie set him on course to appear in several comedy classics. However, if Rudd had his own way, he would’ve starred in the film as a different character. He was initially more interested in one of the other attendees of Bronson Alcott High School, but Rudd was talked out of auditioning for that role for reasons he couldn’t really argue with at the time.

Marvel stars have to get into extraordinarily good shape to play their roles convincingly. While CGI and costume padding can enhance the superhero experience, actors still need to get in shape to convince viewers they’re watching a real superhero.

Paul Rudd is easily one of the most likable celebrities in Hollywood. When he first broke onto the scene in the 1995 teen dramedy, Clueless, fans found him witty and charming. He’s had a lengthy career as a funny man, nabbing the role of Mike, Phoebe’s husband on Friends, and portraying unforgettable characters in Anchorman, This Is 40, and I Love You, Man.
He became a bona fide movie star when he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Ant-Man in 2015. While Rudd’s known for his youthful appearance and funny guy persona, not many people know about his heritage and how his family descended from Ashkenazi Jews.

"This Is 40" isn't Judd Apatow's most popular film, but even a not-so-great Apatow movie usually isn't too bad. Arriving in 2012 near the tail end of Apatow's dominance, while the film's humor was still razor-sharp, it lacked the focus of the director's earlier efforts. But the pacing and runtime issues aside, "This Is 40" remains a charming ode to the challenges of a long-term marriage. Apatow returned to his Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) characters from 2007's "Knocked Up," and followed them as they crept into the quadragenarian territory. Throughout the course of the film, their struggles are depicted with an honesty that has characterized much of Apatow's movies but seems even more pointed here. Mostly because it's all based on his and Mann's real-life experiences as a married couple.

Believe it or not, it's been 30 years since Paul Rudd first charmed audiences on screens with his earliest acting roles. The star of Marvel's "Ant-Man" trilogy had his first big break with "Clueless" in 1995, but he didn't hit his comedic stride until he paired up with frequent collaborator Judd Apatow. Throughout the aughts, the two worked together on a series of movies that were funny and frank about dating, family, and friendship, including "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," "This is 40," and "Knocked Up."

This will be Apatow’s fourth time hosting the annual awards show — he has previously hosted in 2018, 2020 and 2022.
“I am so honored to host the DGA awards for the fourth time,” says Apatow. “If I was ever nominated, I would stop.”

Karyn Kusama's 2009 film "Jennifer's Body" has officially been rescued. Initially a bomb, the film has, in the last decade, undergone a massive critical reevaluation, with many finding it to be a modern feminist classic.
"Jennifer's Body" strikes an uncanny balance between being a savvy essay on the exploitation and commodification of teenage girls, and being a fun, wicked slumber party fright fest. Megan Fox plays Jennifer, often described as the prettiest girl at her high school. Jennifer's best friend is Anita (Amanda Seyfried) who goes by the unfortunate, and unfortunately descriptive nickname Needy. Their relationship is warm, but seemingly socially unbalanced, with Jennifer being a popular cheerleader and Needy being a shy wallflower. They have been friends since they were little, and it seems that adolescence and sexuality may complicate their relationship.
That, and the fact that Jennifer, after surviving a fire at an indie rock concert, seems to...

It goes the same every year; the holidays are a time for joy and renewal, and the new year is a time to throw it all away, recover emotionally, and ignore real life until February (at least). We’re talking peak winter, existential angst — the kind of things you can’t face down without a warm blanket and a weekend TV marathon.
The Netflix library gets lots of new film titles in January 2023, including the first five “Rocky” movies, “Top Gun,” and the triumphant return of “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.” Though the TV pickings are slimmer, it’s the perfect time to catch up on breezy comfort offerings, like Japan’s charming “Old Enough!” in which toddlers run errands. The first season went viral with social media clips, and Season 2 drops January 1. Let these tiny little task rabbits be an inspiration for us all in the new year, to help our loved ones,...

These days, Seth Rogen is showing up in Steven Spielberg movies and posting pictures of his pottery on Twitter. But back in the early-2000s, he had a near-legendary run appearing in Judd Apatow comedies, which truly jump-started his career. After his supporting role alongside Steve Carell in Apatow's 2005 effort "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," Rogen took on the starring role in the director's next project: the romantic comedy "Knocked Up."
Playing Ben Stone, the lovable stoner with a slacker mentality, the actor was described by Peter Sciretta in /Film's original "Knocked Up" review, as someone who "reminds me of a lot of my friends." Scenes with Ben and his band of layabout buddies feel like you're watching actual friends hanging out and busting balls. In fact, the movie succeeded in realistically depicting all kinds of life situations. Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann's Pete and Debbie felt so much like an...

Academy Award-nominee Annie Mumolo, Reid Scott, Perry Mattfeld and Jordan Aaron Hall have joined the cast of Prime Video’s “The Idea of You,” starring and produced by Academy Award-winner Anne Hathaway.

As Judd Apatow’s This Is 40 was based on characters from the cast of Knocked Up, the upcoming sequel will likely feature the same cast as This Is 40, not only because a portion of them are Judd Apatow’s actual family, but because the role of Paul Rudd on top of his the acting of his wife

As the daughter of Leslie Mann and Judd Apatow, who have each been in the entertainment industry for three decades, Maude Apatow is no stranger to being called a "nepotism baby," a nickname for Hollywood stars with famous parents. With her mother and father so intertwined in her career, Maude can see why the nepotism claims are so prevalent, but she's on a mission to prove that her success is also a product of talent.
"At first I was sad," Maude said about being dubbed a "nepotism baby" in a recent interview with Porter. "I try not to let [the judgment] get to me because I obviously understand that I'm in such a lucky position. A lot of people [in a similar position] have proven themselves over the years, so I've got to keep going and make good work. It's so early in my career, I don't have much to show yet, but hopefully one day...
