Take away the gore in Peter Nicholson’s story of young hikers and you’d have an attractive promo for Dartmoor tourism
Peter Nicholson’s low-budget horror-thriller starts better than it ends. As two young hikers (Gemma-Leah Devereux, Rebecca Night) are led off the beaten track by a hunky guide (Callum Blue), the first act’s every set-up benefits from the screen-filling backdrops of the eponymous moors. It’s disappointing, then, that Nicholson should retreat from this spectacular stage to a farmhouse haunted by mysterious deaths; doubly so when the relationships, dialogue and action all stop ringing true. Redact the gore, and it’d make an attractive promo for Dartmoor tourism, but A Night in the Woods (2012) hounded its characters far more persuasively over this particular terrain.

At this point I feel I should add "For Found Footage Format Fans Only" in big, bold letters at the start of certain film reviews. (Like the current one, the blandly titled A Night in the Woods.) Put quite simply, there have to be over a hundred of these "micro-budget, handheld, most improvised, shot in a nearby forest" movies that have hit the shelves in the last five years -- and one certainly couldn't blame a horror fan for simply lumping most of them together and dismissing the entire "first-person shaky cam" format completely. But for those of us who think there's actually some novelty, promise, and innate creepiness to be found in these movies (to say nothing of the writers who cover horror films and try to separate the crap from the quality for other folks), well, here's another one. A Night in the Woods. Three young (and rather...

A Night In The Woods
Stars: Scoot McNairy, Anna Skellern, Andrew Hawley | Written and Directed by Richard Parry
Reading the title of the film gives it all away really, A Night in the Woods. That’s what this film is and pretty much that is what happens, three characters spend A Night in the Woods and we get to see the footage found afterwards. Sounds a bit like The Blair Witch Project doesn’t it? Well you may just be right.
Brody and his girlfriend Kerry are taking a trip into Dartmoor’s Wistman’s Woods with her “cousin” Leo. The local villagers in the pub give them stories about the woods and it’s dubious past which they laugh off as they make their way onto the moors, then into the woods themselves. What is found is the footage of what happened that night as sexual tension runs high,...

Anna Karenina (12A)
(Joe Wright, 2012, UK/Fra) Keira Knightley, Kelly Macdonald, Jude Law, 130 mins
Bringing period drama up-to-date, Wright's radical reinterpretation of Tolstoy's tragedy stages the action almost entirely in a theatre – backstage areas, red curtains and all. It's a smart framing device for the Imperial Russia on display, even if the stylisation puts emotion at a slight remove, not helped by the love-or-loathe leads. But it's still a sight to behold, with rich colours, doll's-house sets and costumes to die for (spoiler alert!).
Dredd (18)
(Pete Travis, 2012, UK) Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Lena Headey, Rakie Ayola. 95 mins
Aiming to please old 2000Ad fans rather than convert new ones, this post-apocalyptic sci-fi has all the violent justice and jutting-chin action you'd want, with some visual flourishes to make up for a straightahead plot.
Lawless (18)
(John Hillcoat, 2012, Us) Tom Hardy, Shia Labeouf, Guy Pearce. 116 mins
Cops, gangsters and a family of moonshine...

More “Blair Witch Project” style shenanigans arrive in the form of “A Night in the Woods”, a British effort which could at least never be accused of not living up to its title, following a trio of the usual types wandering around the moors and forests of Northern England. The found footage film was directed by Richard Parry (“South West 9”), who previously worked as a conflict zone cameraman, helming various documentaries in Iraq and Afghanistan, with cinematography by Simon Dennis (“The Sweeney”), and the international cast of American star Scoot McNairy (“Monsters”), Australian actress Anna Skellern (“The Descent: Part 2”) and up and coming British actor Andrew Hawley (“Snow White And The Huntsman”). The Vertigo Films release is set for a brief run in UK cinemas in early September, arriving shortly afterwards on DVD. The very recognisable plot follows an American called Brody (Scoot McNairy), his girlfriend Kerry (Anna Skellern...

Here at Dread Central we love when people head out into the woods to go camping and such. Mainly because they usually get dismembered and terrorized by any number of baddies. This makes us giddy. If it does you as well, dig on this latest trailer, etc.

Last week, we took a look at the relative dearth of leading men in Hollywood: why Tom Cruise, Will Smith, et al. remain at the top of the tree and why so few serious competitors have emerged since. But one of the most exciting things about our job is getting to watch the new names that emerge, breakouts who have the potential to join the A-listers, or at the very least, deliver a host of hugely exciting performances for decades to come.
So we've decided to kick off our On The Rise selection for 2012 by looking at some of the actors who we're tipping for big things in the next few years. Last time we made these kinds of picks and predictions we did pretty well, listing the likes of Joel Edgerton, Edgar Ramirez, Jason Sudeikis, Adam Scott, Jake Johnson and David Oyelowo who have all gone on to become much-sought-after names,...

We’d had Blair Witch goes Spanish ([Rec]); Blair Witch meets Godzilla (Cloverfield) and Blair Witch stays in for the night (Paranormal Activity). And now comes Blair Witch on Dartmoor, courtesy of Brit-scarer A Night In The Woods. A found-footage faux-doc involving two guys and a girl, Richard Parry’s movie is scarily derivative. But it’s also, within its own limits, effective. Following the 1999 blueprint to the letter, it even starts with locals riffing to camera about an urban legend – in this case, the...
