The Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, is aiming to premiere on HBO sometime in 2022. There will be fire and blood.
What’s dead may never die. That might be a turn of phrase for the Ironborn, but it certainly applies to Game of Thrones as a whole, including the upcoming Targaryen prequel series. Given a surprising straight-to-order series by HBO last year, House of the Dragon is proceeding nicely, as confirmed by Casey Bloys, HBO’s president of programming.
Speaking to press during the TCAs, Bloys revealed that the Ryan Condal and George R.R. Martin created Targaryen series is most likely going to premiere in 2022.
“My guess is sometime in 2022,” Bloys told Deadline. “They are still writing.”
House of the Dragon is supposed to be loosely based on the ancient Targaryen family history that predates Daenerys Targaryen’s birth by at least several centuries.

“Game of Thrones” came to an end last May and HBO has wasted no time in getting to work on continuing the franchise, ordering to series the “GoT” spinoff “House of the Dragon” last October.
But when can you expect this 10-episode prequel, co-created by George R.R. Martin and “Colony” co-creator Ryan Condal, to actually make it to the airwaves? Well, we can’t tell you for certain, but HBO programming chief Casey Bloys gave TheWrap his best guess — which is essentially the best guess you’re gonna get right now.
“They are in-room writing,” Bloys told us during the Television Critics Association press tour Wednesday. “My suspicion is, this is looking a ways out, but my suspicion is it would be on air sometime in 2022. That’s with a big asterisk, but right now, that’s what I would say.”

It looks like the Age of Heroes won't be coming to our screens anytime soon. The highly anticipated Game of Thrones prequel from British screenwriter Jane Goldman is officially not moving to a series at HBO. According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources revealed that Goldman broke the news to the cast through email, though HBO has declined to comment on the matter.
The Game of Thrones prequel was expected to premiere in 2021 and follow Westeros's descent from the Stark-filled golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour: the first ever battle between man and White Walker. Naomi Watts was the first star attached to the production and was quickly followed by alums from Poldark, Humans, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, and more.

It seems unthinkable that HBO’s “Game of Thrones” could spend another week dominating news headlines more than five months after airing its series finale, but here we are.
Recent days saw the fantasy series making and breaking news left and right, from a controversial panel featuring creators D. B. Weiss and David Benioff, to the pair stepping away from their deal to make a “Star Wars” trilogy, to HBO cancelling a “Game of Thrones” prequel series, only to announce a series order for a different prequel series hours later.
But for as easy (and edifying) as it is to tee off on Benioff and Weiss, it was HBO’s maneuvering regarding the future of the franchise that was ultimately the cause for the most concern.
On the surface, trading one prequel series for the next seems like a straightforward move for the premium cable network. After all, HBO’s...

George R.R. Martin confirms he pitched House of the Dragons to HBO three years ago, but he won't be writing episodes for it... yet.
Like the haunting refrains of “Jenny of Oldstones,” the ghost of Game of Thrones is walking loudly amongst us. Appropriately timed during the same week as Halloween and the Day of the Dead, the old agonies and ecstasies of HBO’s flagship series have been awoken as WarnerMedia made waves by announcing that one Game of Thrones prequel, The Long Night, is dead while another is alive. Not only is it alive, but House of the Dragon is going straight to series with George R.R. Martin credited as a co-creator.
This has been met with a positive, if cautious, reception after Game of Thrones’ controversial finale, but it also has made some Martin fans even more anxious since eight years after the...

Terminator: Dark Fate wisely retconned the worst aspect of Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
Terminator: Dark Fate is the first film since Terminator 2: Judgment Day to have the guidance of franchise creator James Cameron, and it (rightly) obliterates the last three Terminator movies from the timeline. The first two Terminator movies are the only ones that matter now, and while few would call Dark Fate a better movie than the original two, one thing it does well is to bravely retcon the worst part of T2.

Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon focuses on the "Dance of Dragons" civil war between Targaryens. We consider why HBO picked it.
As you’ve likely heard by now, Jane Goldman’s Game of Thrones prequel, tentatively titled “The Long Night,” is dead, and Ryan Condal’s Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, is going straight to series. Long live the Game of Thrones prequel. This news was met with much fanfare by WarnerMedia, who made it the crown jewel of its HBO Max presentation. The series, which is getting a full 10-episode order out of the gate, will pull liberally from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood and dive deep into the history of House Targaryen.
These tidings have traveled across the internet faster than news of Jon Snow’s true parentage. And yet, what it means is only beginning to be grasped,...

Update, Tuesday afternoon: Just hours after the Naomi Watts series was shuttered, HBO announced a full series order for “House of the Dragon” a prequel series about the rise of the Targaryen family in Westeros. Read all about it here.
“Game of Thrones” ended its eight-season run in May with what is arguably one of the most divisive series finales in the history of television. But long before that fanbase-breaking episode, HBO was already plotting to capitalize on the hugely popular fantasy epic by expanding its universe with potential spinoff shows.
On Tuesday, HBO’s quest to keep the franchise alive took a few steps back, as it scrapped the “GoT” prequel pilot that was the favored to next take the Iron Throne.
Ordered to pilot last year, the now-scrapped untitled project from George R.R. Martin and “Kingsman” screenwriter Jane Goldman was set thousands of years before the events of...

The Game of Thrones prequel pilot operating under the name "The Long Night," and which starred Naomi Watts, will not go to series.
It turned out not to be such a long night, after all. More than a year after HBO announced with great fanfare that it had ordered a Game of Thrones prequel pilot from writer and producer Jane Goldman, and one which would go on to attach Naomi Watts in a leading role and S.J. Clarkson as director, the project is apparently dead. And this comes just as WarnerMedia is unveiling its expansive plans for the new streaming service HBO Max.
The news, which HBO has yet to confirm as definite, was broken by Deadline. The trade site reports that the pilot ran into possible production issues when it shot earlier this year in Northern Ireland. Indeed, HBO commissioned a new Game of Thrones prequel pilot in September,...

The new, live-action "Game of Thrones" prequel "Bloodmoon" stars Naomi Watts, Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Miranda Richardson, Josh Whitehouse, Jamie Campbell Bower, Sheila Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Alex Sharp and Toby Regbo, set years before the events of the "Game of Thrones" TV series, when 'dragons' ruled 'Westeros', airing on HBO in 2020:
"...taking place years before the events of 'Game of Thrones', the series chronicles the world's descent from the golden 'Age of Heroes' into its darkest hour.
"And only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of the history of 'Westeros' to the true origins of the ghastly 'white walkers', the mysteries of the 'East', to the 'Starks of legend. It's not the story we think we know..."
"Westeros is a very different place," said Got author George R.R. Martin about the new series.
"There's no 'King's Landing'. There's no 'Iron Throne'. There are no 'Targaryens'.

Fans might not have seen the final dragon soaring over Westeros.
HBO is nearing a pilot commitment for a prequel series based on the “Game of Thrones” companion book “Fire & Blood,” sources have confirmed to Variety. The book tells stories of previous Targaryen kings, like Aegon the Conqueror, the first ruler of Westeros, and Aegon the Dragonbane, all of whom are ancestors of Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and Jon Snow (Kit Harington) who appear in the recently finished mega-hit series.
The prospective pilot hails from Martin and “Colony” co-creator and executive producer Ryan Condal, and would be set 300 years before the events of the original series, exploring the beginning of the end for House Targaryen.
HBO declined comment. Author George R. R. Martin had previously hinted via his blog that one of the prequel series would be based on the companion book.
The cabler originally announced that five spinoff series were in the works.

HBO declined to comment on the potential spinoff, which was first reported by Deadline, but an individual with knowledge of the project confirmed the report’s accuracy to TheWrap.
The series is from “Game of Thrones” author George R.R. Martin and “Colony” co-creator Ryan Condal. [Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for Season 8 of “Game of Thrones.”]
“There are very few downsides of having a hugely popular show,” said HBO President Casey Bloys at the Television Critics Association press tour on Wednesday, when the first questions reporters asked were about the backlash to “Game of Thrones.” “That just comes with the territory. It shows a lot of enthusiasm.”
The season came under fire for its odd pacing, filler scenes, underdeveloped characterizations, and other egregious blunders onscreen. The final betrayal, however, came in the massive heel turn and eventual murder of prominent protagonist Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke). Fans were so displeased that they started an online petition to reshoot the final season, one that has earned nearly 1.7 million signatures to date.
Despite this enthusiasm, HBO is not inspired. “It’s not something we seriously considered,” said Bloys. “I can’t imagine another network would [be tempted either]. But who knows?”

The “Game of Thrones” prequel might be the cure for what’s ailing fans who did not care for how Dan Weiss and David Benioff’s ended the main series last month. If Naomi Watts, the star of the currently untitled HBO pilot, is to be believed, you “won’t be let down” by this one, guys.

The Game of Thrones Season 8 finale left us viewers with so many great spinoff sequel possibilities...
Game of Thrones has come to an end, but that doesn't mean it's the last we've seen of Westeros... or what's west of it. With HBO and George Rr Martin developing no fewer than four potential Game of Thrones spinoffs, we're desperate to know if any of them could be sequels of sorts to the Game of Thrones story.
We already know that The Long Night spinoff will take place at the end of the Age of Heroes and address the first time Westeros nearly plunged into apocalyptic darkness, but we're yet to find out the premises or settings of the other three potential spin-offs still in contention.

HBO has been the envy of the TV world for the better part of two decades, with a seemingly unbroken chain of critical and ratings hits featuring A-list talent that has nabbed the network a ton of Emmys, and healthy profits.
And by far, HBO’s biggest-ever success has been “Game of Thrones,” a show that over eight seasons has been an unmatched pop culture juggernaut that continues to set ratings records. But as the curtain finally closes on the Seven Kingdoms with Sunday’s series finale, HBO is at a fork in the road. The show ends one week after the series finale of another major success, “Veep,” and there’s no clear successor in the wings.
That’s why it’s understandable that earlier this year, in his first few weeks as WarnerMedia entertainment chairman, Bob Greenblatt had to field the same question over and over: “What happens...

John Oliver killed the lethal injection process for nearly 20 minutes on Sunday. He did that, yes, but the “Last Week Tonight” host also shoveled dirt on his home network HBO as the premium-cable channel nears its post-“Game of Thrones” era.
Oliver joked that lethal injection drugs sound like names of tribes in “Game of Thrones” spinoff, “Game of Space Thrones,” which “has probably already been optioned by HBO.”

There are only three episodes of “Game of Thrones” remaining, but there could be up to three spinoff series coming to HBO, according to author George R.R. Martin.
In a blog post on Saturday, Martin — whose “A Song of Ice and Fire” fantasy novels led to the HBO hit — said of the five “GoT” shows that were originally said to be in development at the pay-tv channel, “three of them are still moving forward nicely.”
HBO confirmed the Naomi Watts-led “Thrones” prequel pilot — which was ordered last year and is co-created by Martin and showrunner Jane Goldman — is set to begin production this summer, but little else had been said about the four other possible spinoffs.
The author says that “two other shows remain in the script stage, but are edging closer,” aside from the one potential “GoT” series that will soon begin shooting, which is set thousands of...

Game of Thrones writer Bryan Cogman has confirmed that his spinoff is not moving forward at HBO.
You know what they say about the game of thrones: you win or you die. Well, one of the many Game of Thrones spinoffs in development just died.
It was previously confirmed that Game of Thrones writer Bryan Cogman was working on the fifth of five announced spinoff pilots for HBO alongside George R.R. Martin. Now in an interview with Variety about last Sunday's episode, Cogman has revealed that the project is no more.
“This is it for me in terms of Westeros,” Cogman said. “It’s been a beautifully cathartic thing re-watching the series recently, it’s been ten years of my life.”
Cogman is credited as the writer on nine Game of Thrones episodes, dating all the way back to season 1's "Cripples, Bastards, and Broken Things." Sunday's episode,...

The secrecy around the final season of HBO’s fantasy epic “Game of Thrones” would make even Marvel Studios jealous.
But we finally know at least a few details about how the climactic eighth season will start, courtesy of a massive cover story on the final season in Entertainment Weekly. And it will kick off with a ton of callbacks to the show’s first episode.
The season will open at Winterfell, but this time instead of King Robert’s (Mark Addy) procession arriving, it’s Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) and her army. This leads to an intermingling of many of the show’s main characters, with some reuniting, others meeting for the first time. But they all have one common goal: To prepare for the invasion of the Army of the Dead led by the Night’s King.

Naomi Watts will star in the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel, set several thousand years before the current series.
HBO has cast two-time Oscar nominee Naomi Watts in the lead role of the unnamed Game of Thrones prequel set thousands of years before the present Game of Thrones during the "Age of Heroes." Watts will play a socialite with a dark secret, but so far that is all that is known about her character. Watts will be joined by Josh Whitehouse, best known for playing Hugh Armitage in Poldark. The final season of “Game of Thrones” will premiere in the first half of 2019, president of HBO programming Casey Bloys said Wednesday at the Television Critics Association summer 2018 press tour.
“Sometime in ’19,” Bloys said after being asked when we can expect the eighth and final season. When pressed, he said that it will air in the first half of next year. We knew it was airing in 2019, but now the window for an actual date is closing a little. As for what fans can expect from the final season? Bloys was tight-lipped, but said it’s “pretty great.”
Pivoting to the spinoff series in the works, Bloys said he hopes the pilot from Jane Goldman will go into production in 2019. “We have to find a director, we have to get it casted,” he said.
What we do know about the prequel is that it takes place thousands of years before “Game of Thrones,” and that the series will chronicle the world’s descent from the Age of Heroes. As the logline says, “Only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend … it’s not the story we think we know.”
Goldman serves as showrunner, and will executive produce with George R.R. Martin, Vince Gerardis, Daniel Zelman.

The Age of Heroes in Westeros history in “Game of Thrones” is rife with myth and legend — it was a time thousands of years before the events of the current series, and one when events weren’t recorded, only handed down as stories.
With the news that HBO is creating a “Game of Thrones” prequel to be set, at least partially, during the Age of Heroes, the question becomes, what will it actually be about? There are a lot of things that a show set during the Age of Heroes could cover. The description of the show provided by HBO also suggests that everything we think we know and have already seen about the history of Westeros is likely to be very wrong, which opens a ton of doors.
Here’s what HBO said, exactly: “The series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour.

HBO announced on Friday that they have greenlit the porduction of a pilot for a prequel to the acclaimed international hit television series Game of Thrones.
The news isn't totally shocking. Back in May, the premium cable network stated that they were developing spinoffs of the series with plans to “explore different time periods of George R.R. Martin’s vast and rich universe.”
HBO made deals with five writers to develop scripts for said spinoffs and in the same statement, the longtime producers of the show, Dan Weiss and David Benioff, confirmed that they would there to support the new writers but that they would be taking a "much deserved break from writing about Westeros once the final season is complete."

Although 2019 will mark the end of the current series of “Game of Thrones,” it won’t be the only story HBO has to tell in Westeros.
The network is also working on a prequel show, which will be run by screenwriter and producer Jane Goldman. She’s developing a story with George R. R. Martin, author of the book series “A Song of Ice and Fire” on which “Game of Thrones” is based, but don’t expect any of your favorite characters to show up. Instead, the new prequel will delve into the legendary past of the continent of Westeros and beyond, jumping thousands of years into the past.
The brief description of the show explains that it’ll be set (at least partially) during the Age of Heroes, a period of Westerosi history that’s not well understood. In the lore of “Game of Thrones,” the Age of Heroes is mostly myth,...

“What is dead may never die,” as they say in the Iron Islands and the halls of HBO. The network has picked up the pilot for an untitled prequel to “Game of Thrones,” created and written by Jane Goldman and George R.R. Martin.
This won’t be “Better Call Stannis,” though. The official description, as announced by HBO, is as follows:
Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game Of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.
The official credits for the pilot are: Story by Jane Goldman & George R.R. Martin, Teleplay by Jane Goldman.

How do you solve a problem like the DC Extended Universe? (Or whatever Warner Bros. is or is not calling their cinematic universe of DC properties these days, if the plan is even still to build one singular cinematic universe requiring a name, as opposed to pivoting to standalone films?)
