The summer movie season could use some help, and Chris Pratt might just be here to save the day. The "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Jurassic World" actor returns to the silver screen next weekend in "The Garfield Movie," an animated take on Jim Davis' orange, Monday-hating cat. For Sony Pictures, there is one big question; can some of that Pratt magic that made "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" ($1.36 billion worldwide) such a major hit last year rub off on this one? Even a fraction of that magic would be most welcome here.
"The Garfield Movie" is opening directly against George Miller's "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga." While the animated, family-friendly film would typically have the edge, it looks like "Furiosa" is going to win the weekend in the early going, with an opening between $46.5 and $59 million. But that doesn't mean this cat is out of luck, as Sony...

The official trailer has been released for Sony’s “Harold and the Purple Crayon,” the children’s book adaptation from director Carlos Saldanha starring Zachary Levi and Zooey Deschanel.
Following the storyline of the 1955 children’s book from author Crockett Johnson, the film chronicles a man named Harold, played by Levi, who can create worlds with the help of his imagination and a purple crayon. In addition to Levi and Deschanel, Lil Rel Howery, Ravi Patel, Camille Guaty, Tanya Reynolds and Pete Gardner round out the film’s cast.
Saldanha’s directing background has largely taken place in the animated space, spearheading prominent children’s films such as “Ice Age,” “Rio” and its sequel “Ferdinand,” “Robots” and more. “Harold and the Purple Crayon” is set to be the director’s first live-action feature.

Harold and the Purple Crayon is a beloved children’s book written and illustrated by Crockett Johnson about a curious four-year-old boy with a magic purple crayon that has the power to make anything he draws become real. Hollywood has been attempting to bring the story to the big screen for decades, and it seems that time has finally arrived. Sony Pictures has dropped a pair of posters for the live-action adaptation of Harold and the Purple Crayon, which stars Zachary Levi.
As you might be aware, Zachary Levi is not a four-year-old boy, so the movie is obviously switching up the story somewhat. Sony hasn’t released an official plot synopsis yet, but here’s my prediction: A now grown-up Harold has mostly forgotten about his magical purple crayon, believing it was a product of his young imagination. But when Harold finds himself in debt to the mob, he...

When Chris Wedge's animated film "Ice Age" first came out in 2002, it was considered novel and striking for many reasons. It was set in prehistoric times yet eschewed dinosaurs in favor of megafauna living in the Pleistocene Epoch. The three main characters were a sloth named Sid (John Leguizamo), a smilodon named Diego (Denis Leary), and a mammoth named Manfred aka Manny (Ray Romano), and they were engaged in a great migration to flee the oncoming Ice Age. The plot of their first movie apes John Ford's 1946 Western "3 Godfathers," as the three animals discover a human infant that they must keep safe and deliver back to the then-evolutionarily-novel homo sapiens living nearby.
The design of "Ice Age" was striking, aiming for broad, stylized characters that were markedly different from the friendly, big-eyed protagonists of Disney pictures. It certainly helped that the "Ice Age" movies featured a character named Scrat,...

The second of nine films made by director Jess Franco and writer-producer Harry Alan Towers over the course of only two years, The Girl from Rio is their jazzy, featherweight riff on the spy-fi genre, a heady blend of international intrigue and semi-science-fictional elements, popular (especially in Europe) in the wake of the James Bond films. It’s also a sequel of sorts to Towers’s earlier film The Million Eyes of Sumuru, directed by Lindsay Shonteff, based on the exploits of the Sax Rohmer super-villainess. Though in this film, for some inexplicable reason, the character is regularly referred to as Sunanda (obviously and not very convincingly dubbed in post) and listed in the credits as Sumitra. Blame it on Rio!
Like many a Franco film, The Girl from Rio opens with a protracted erotic dance routine: Clad only in a webbed body stocking, Yana (Beni Cardoso) does her number for a recumbent man,...

Ángel Manuel Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer's "Blue Beetle" (check out our review here) may not have been a box office success, but the latest venture from DC Studios and one of the last films of the DC Cinematic Universe before James Gunn and Peter Safran revamp the studio is thankfully one of the most fun. Not to mention, it's also one of the rare instances where a superhero movie embraces cultural specificity, instead of just perpetuating the same ol' white stories over and over again. If you've yet to see the film, here's what to expect.

Annapurna Animation is kicking into overdrive, with director Nick Bruno (Netflix’s “Nimona” and 20th Century Studio’s “Spies in Disguise”) and producer Julie Zackary joining up.
They are also planning to expand their feature development slate, with the first flick being an adaptation of the acclaimed “play as a cat” video game “Stray.” Also on tap is a new film from Chris Wedge (“Ice Age”), an original called “Foo.” Along with directing an untitled original in development, Bruno is actively developing original ideas for Annapurna Animation.
“Stray,” an open-world adventure where you play as an ordinary cat, earned strong reviews and 2.5 million copies sold in the first month prior to even launching on Steam. Andy Taylor thought that Nov. 5, 2022 was going to be one of the greatest nights of his life. After years of waiting, Duran Duran were finally entering the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The guitarist had co-founded the band back in 1980 and co-wrote many of their biggest songs, including “Rio” and “Hungry Like the Wolf,” but he hadn’t shared a stage with them since 2006, when old tensions resurfaced during the creation of their aborted album Reportage and they parted ways.

Founding Duran Duran member and guitarist Andy Taylor claims a new drug treatment is working in his battle with Stage 4 prostate cancer.
In a BBC interview, Taylor said the drug – Lutetium-177 – has extended his life “for five years.”
The 62-year-old Taylor first was diagnosed with the disease in 2018. He went public with the information last November.
After that, a scientist suggested nuclear medicine treatment with Lutetium-177, which reportedly targets cancer cells.
“It can’t see healthy cells,” Taylor told BBC News. He said his first round of treatments was six weeks ago. “It kills stage four cancer in your bones. And so what it’s effectively done is extend my life for five years.”
The drug received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration in March 2022 and has “proven to significantly improve prostate cancer survival rates and quality of life, as well as extend the time it takes for the disease to progress,...

The seven-year production of the latest Netflix animation feature, Nimona, was a rocky one. Nimona’s epic journey is unlike anything else in feature animation history. Both Meledandri and Williams talked briefly about the project after the artist made a surprise appearance at the festival to present the animation supremo with its Golden Ticket lifetime achievement award on Wednesday.

"This is the part where you run." Netflix has unveiled the first look teaser for animated movie Nimona, an action adventure thriller from filmmakers Nick Bruno & Troy Quane (of Spies in Disguise). Originally a production of Blue Sky Studios, a former subsidiary of 20th Century Fox, best known for creating the Ice Age and Rio franchises, it was originally set to be directed by Patrick Osborne, with an initial release date of 2020. Following Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox, the production received pushback from Disney's new leadership due to the film's LGBTQ themes, then was canceled due to Blue Sky's closure in April 2021. Annapurna Pictures later revived the project, with Bruno & Quane taking over directing duties, Dneg on the animation, and Netflix releasing it. You know, when you think about it, franchises can be a lot like family. The bigger they are, the more likely they are to go off the rails entirely. Of course, there's no more quintessential example of a big-screen family that fits both of these descriptions than Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his Fast Fambly of street racers-turned-superspies. By now, everyone knows that the trajectory of the "Fast & Furious" movies is unlike any other, taking viewers from the seedy streets of Los Angeles' local racing scene to world-ending shenanigans that somehow can only be foiled by one particular team of -- let's call them what they are, folks -- gearhead superheroes.
This major change in the franchise's scale and ambition didn't just happen overnight, however, in the same way that Rome wasn't built in a day. Every film laid its own particular building blocks that would eventually add up...
