Production is underway on Season 2 of the “Frasier,” with Peri Gilpin set to return in the new season.
Gilpin famously played Roz Doyle throughout the original show’s 11-season run. She then reprised the role in a guest star appearance in the first season finale of the revival. She is now set to make multiple appearance in Season 2 as a recurring guest star. In addition, James Burrows will return to the series to direct two episodes, as he did in the first season.
Gilpin is not the only original series actor to return for the revival. Bebe Neuwirth reprised the role of Lilith Sternin, whom she originally played on “Cheers” before making multiple appearances on the original “Frasier,” in the revival’s seventh episode.

The revival of Frasier is getting a second season.
Paramount+ has renewed the sitcom — which stars Kelsey Grammer picking up his curmudgeonly character first introduced NBC’s Cheers — for another round.
“Kelsey made a triumphant return as one of the most iconic and beloved characters on television,” said Jeff Grossman, evp of programming at Paramount+. “The new series introduced Fraiser to a whole new generation while reminding fans of Kelsey’s truly timeless portrayal of Dr. Crane. We’re so excited to see what the creative team and superb cast serve up for season two.”
Grammer added, “Frasier is a love story, and I am very happy we will be allowed to continue it.”
The series follows Crane “in the next chapter of his life after he returns to Boston to face new challenges, forge new relationships and — with hope — finally fulfill an old dream or two,” and also stars Jack Cutmore-Scott,...

The "Frasier" revival didn't get off to the most auspicious start. In fact, it got off to several less than ideal starts, with star Kelsey Grammer initially planning on bringing back the entire ensemble that made the original series so beloved. Unfortunately, no one actually wanted to come back, leaving Grammar and new showrunners Joe Cristali and Chris Harris to dream up a whole new chapter for Dr. Crane — one that would see him return to Boston and reinsert himself into the life of his son, Freddy (played by Jack Cutmore-Scott in the revival).
But even after locking in this new premise, there were further hurdles to navigate. Leaving aside the fact that when it finally aired, Frasier 2023 revealed itself as a series that really should have been a one-off special, the period directly before its launch on the Paramount+ streaming service also brought some minor controversy. In Entertainment Weekly's 1993 cover story on Moose, the beloved Jack Russell Terrier that played Eddie on "Frasier," the dog was described as "the hottest pooch to be unleashed on the airwaves in years." The story itself was proof of Moose's popularity — what other TV pet was getting an EW cover story? On the show, Eddie belonged to Frasier's dad, Martin (John Mahoney), and was just as beloved by the characters in the series as he was by the audience. The only character that wasn't too fond of Eddie was Dr. Frasier Crane himself.
Moose appeared in 192 episodes of "Fraiser," with his son, Enzo, also standing in as Eddie in the later seasons. As such, he was arguably just as integral a part of the series as any other member of the ensemble cast, and one of the best characters on "Frasier." When the "Frasier" revival was first announced there was a series of inauspicious developments. First, no one from the original series, including Niles actor David Hyde Pierce, wanted to return for the reboot, which left just Kelsey Grammer to reprise his role as the lovably stuffy psychiatrist. Then, Grammar himself, who was coming off 2020's incomprehensibly bad "Money Plane," added to the general air of concern surrounding the show by voicing his not-so-modest opinion that Frasier alone was the key to the original sitcom's success.
This would have been disquieting enough by itself had there not already been a general sense that "Frasier" 2023 was yet another nostalgia play in our nostalgia-mad monoculture. Add all that together and the build-up to the show's debut was far from the joyous and triumphant celebration that fans of the original sitcom no doubt hoped would accompany the return of their beloved Dr. Crane.

When the original Frasier series ended in 2004, we thought that was the last we’d see of Dr. Frasier Crane.
As Frasier was a favorite of many, the idea of never seeing the character again left some people brokenhearted. As a show, Frasier combined humor, a fair amount of intelligence, and lots of heart.
The chemistry between the talented cast, coupled with comedic yet heartfelt storytelling, was the TV version of Magic in a Bottle for eleven seasons.
The original Frasier series finale was everything fans could have hoped for as storylines were wrapped up and beloved characters looked to the future.
So, when the news was first announced that Kelsey Grammer and Paramount+ were planning to revive the series 19 years later, it made sense to be a bit apprehensive.
Now, with Frasier Season 1 completed, it begs the question: Should there be a Frasier Season 2?
Let’s unpack this from the beginning.

Given the widespread reaction to Greta Gerwig‘s feminist phenomenon film Barbie, it’s no surprise that the movie had a dominant presence in the nominations for the 2024 Golden Globe Awards.
The film has received an impressive ten nods, which officially makes it the second most-nominated film in the history of the awards, on par with the acclaimed Cabaret.
A close second with eight nominations is Christopher Nolan‘s Oppenheimer, which delves into the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer and the development of the atomic bomb.
Unlike the Oscars, the Golden Globe Awards honor achievements in both film and television and distinguish between different genres. The awards recognize the best comedies and musicals separately from the best dramas.

The classic NBC sitcom “Frasier” returned earlier this year with a revival series on Paramount+, but it did so without the involvement of former series regular David Hyde Pierce. While star Kelsey Grammer returned, Pierce turned down the chance to once again play Frasier’s younger brother, Niles Crane — a role that earned Pierce three Emmys for supporting actor in a comedy series during the show’s original run.
“I never really wanted to go back,” Pierce recently told Los Angeles Times about his decision to skip the reboot. “It’s not like I said, ‘Oh, I don’t ever want to do that again.’ I loved every moment. It was that I wanted to do other things.”
“When we got into real talks about the reboot, I had just started on the ‘Julia’ TV show and was working on a musical and going to do another musical,” Pierce continued.

When David Hyde Pierce said he would not return for the acclaimed Frasier reboot, fans lamented the absence of one of the show’s most beloved characters. While Hollywood runs rampant with stories about shady behind-the-scenes scuffles, creative differences, and stars who can’t stand working alongside one another, Pierce wants everyone to know his reasons for not reprising his iconic role as Niles Crane are not nearly as nefarious.
Speaking with the Los Angeles Times while discussing Here We Are, the Stephen Sondheim/David Ives musical in which Pierce appears, the Frasier favorite came clean about his lack of participation in the Paramount+ revival series.

Few shows in the history of broadcast television can ever claim they were as successful as "M*A*S*H." Based on Richard Hooker's book "Mash: A Novel About Three Army Doctors," and the Robert Altman film that previously adapted that same book, the series aired for 11 seasons on CBS from 1972 to 1983 totaling a whopping 256 episodes. Its series finale remains the most-watched finale of any TV series. Unfortunately, the spin-off "AfterMASH" couldn't recapture that same magic — and the show's creator thinks he knows why.
The spin-off series only lasted two seasons, with the second season having its run cut short after the ratings plummeted. It was a short-lived experiment that failed to live up to its predecessor. In "TV's M*A*S*H: The Ultimate Guide Book," author Ed Solomonson spoke with "AfterMASH" co-creator Larry Gelbart, who also developed the original show. When asked about the spin-off, Gelbart first...

This article contains spoilers for the "Frasier" reboot season finale.
With this latest episode, the holiday-themed "Reindeer Games," the first season of Paramount's "Frasier" revival has finally come to an end. It's felt both too short and dragged out, refreshingly joyous and embarrassingly flat, an important addition to the modern TV landscape and an unnecessary one. As we viewers (and we at /Film) anatomize the revival's hits and misses, it's important to pause and reflect on the complicated and synecdotal final bang the season went out on. That would be the return of Peri Gilpin's Roz.
"Reindeer Games" comes as close to classic "Frasier" farce as any episode this season, save a few gags, like Eve's (Jess Salgueiro) convoluted play in episode 6, "Blind Date," June Diane Raphael's guest appearance in that same episode, and a smattering of references to deep cut original series lore. When it comes to guest appearances on the new "Frasier" revival, all the talk has been about returning stars from the original series. Soon we'll also see the return of Peri Gilpin, who played the doctor's radio show producer, Roz, in the original series. Alas, we won't be treated to a guest appearance by David Hyde Pierce's Niles after the actor turned down the opportunity to return for the new show.
I would say it's all been exciting stuff, but really it's been vaguely amusing stuff that feels at once comfortable and uncanny — like we're watching an alternate reality version of "Frasier" written by super-fans that's not as good as the original. Lilith's return certainly provided a shot of nostalgia but also just reminded us...

One of the things the latest version of the Frasier series does well is weave the history of its characters into the current storylines, and Frasier Season 1 Episode 9 is a wonderful example.
Let's unpack the entertaining psychology of this latest installment, which includes scheming to impress women, or at least not scare them off, as well as the relationship between fathers and sons.
We'll start with the funniest moments.
I didn't expect Frasier to go along so willingly with the story Freddy was fabricating, and that made this skit all the more comical.
Frasier really does understand how challenging it can be as an adult to explain why you're living with your parent. He's been there plenty of times as he navigated dating and living with Martin.
Freddy: It’s just, you have no idea how hard it is to explain to a woman that I’m a grown man living with my Dad.

If there's one thing that sums up the best comedy moments in "Frasier" it's that classic switch from the sublime to the ridiculous. Kelsey Grammer's stuffy psychiatrist was supposed to be endearingly pompous, and mostly remained lovable even at his most snooty. But sometimes, he and his brother Niles (David Hyde Pierce) were just straight up off-putting with their insufferably hifalutin tendencies.
Thankfully, these character traits were the precise thing that made for some of the best moments in the beloved sitcom, which ran for 11 seasons from 1993-2004 and which has recently returned in the form of a neither remarkable nor disappointing revival show. As "Frasier" writer, producer, and showrunner Christopher Lloyd said in Vanity Fair's oral history of the show:
"The vanity and self-importance always helped us lead Frasier into comic situations ... It's not funny to see a guy step into a manhole and get hurt. But if...

Kelsey Grammer returned to reprise his role of Dr. Frasier Crane one more time. Over the last four years, Grammer has taken on the part of Frasier across multiple TV shows, beginning with Cheers and now, presumably, ending with the Frasier reboot. While Frasier is Grammer’s signature role, the part was initially intended for someone other than him. The character was actually created with another actor in mind. Grammer was only afforded the chance to audition for the role because John Lithgow turned down the part.
John Lithgow could have played Dr. Frasier Crane, but he turned down the part
While Kelsey Grammer turned out to be the perfect Frasier, the role wasn’t supposed to be his. If John Lithgow hadn’t turned down the part, script unseen, Grammer wouldn’t have ever gotten the opportunity to audition. Lithgow reminisced about his career and his near misses in a recent interview.

Frasier Crane might hear those blues a-callin’ but will he ever share suds with Cliff, Norm and the rest of the Cheers gang again? With the revival of Frasier proving to be a hit with audiences – and now that the doc is back in Boston – there is certainly buzz that we might get some of our beloved Cheers characters back. And while Kelsey Grammer has an idea for a way to work in Cheers, it may not be what viewers hope for.
Speaking with Deadline, Kelsey Grammer suggested he may run into some legal issues if Frasier Crane ever returned to the bar where everybody knows your name. “I’m not sure the guys who wrote Cheers would want us to go back to Cheers. It’s like, let’s let that be where it is. It’s a monument in the minds of television history.” This is similar to...

Finally!
I know we’re only up to Frasier Season 1 Episode 8, but it feels like it’s taken far too long for David to have a story.
And even if it was officially “The B Story,” I’m giving it an A.
Frasier fighting for a professorship after less than one semester of teaching at a prestigious university was silliness, but I suppose, given Frasier’s ego, it made some sense.
Even Alan sided with him.
Well, he sort of made Frasier’s point while still enjoying that he was above his famous friend, at least where the board at Harvard University was concerned.
Frasier: Surely, there must be some sort of an alternate route to professorship, a Crane lane, if you will.
Alan: Well, you know, Olivia, Frasier, and I have the same level of education. We have the same experience as psychiatrists. We’re basically doing the same job,...

This post contains spoilers for the eighth episode of the "Frasier" revival.
When the original "Frasier" series was first coming together, Niles actor David Hyde Pierce thought the pilot script was terrible. Thankfully, the show would run for 11 seasons between 1993 and 2004, during which time it would pick up 37 Emmys and become one of the most beloved sitcoms and most successful spin-offs of all time. So what was Hyde Pierce's problem with the pilot? Well, he thought the writers had basically written two of the exact same characters with Niles and Frasier. This, however, turned out to be an inspired choice. As writer and producer Christopher Lloyd told Vanity Fair in 2018:
"Conventional wisdom would have you pair Frasier with a brother who's a welder, watches football, and sticks his hand in the top of his underpants. The genius was pairing him with a fussier, more erudite version of Frasier, which...

In /Film's review for the "Frasier" revival, Josh Spiegel described it as neither disappointing nor remarkable. Which is pretty much the perfect description for the supporting characters. After Jane Leeves, who played Daphne Moon on the original series, and David Hyde Pierce, who played Niles, passed on the opportunity to come back, showrunners Chris Harris and Joe Cristali had to go back to the drawing board. Along with star Kelsey Grammer, who remains the only original cast member to return in a recurring capacity, Harris and Cristali drew up a new plan for their revival show.
Now airing on Paramount+, that show has done its absolute best to chart a new course for Frasier Crane while remaining faithful to the original show. There are even callbacks to "Cheers" where the character of Frasier first debuted. But try as it might, the new series just can't seem to overcome the lack of the original supporting cast.

Nearly four decades after playing Frasier Crane in the third season of Cheers and thirty years since Frasier Crane got his own show, Kelsey Grammer is back with a Frasier revival, currently streaming on Paramount+.
The series takes fans on a new adventure with the titular Frasier, older and wiser with hopes of fixing his relationship with his grown-up son Frederick “Freddy” Crane, played by Jack Cutmore-Scott, whom he shares with his ex-wife Lilith Sternin (Bebe Neuwirth). Oh, and all of this is taking place in Boston, a change from Seattle where the original spinoff series was set but where everything began for Frasier.
Grammer spoke to Deadline about why the new series’ focus was the perfect next chapter, reuniting with both Neuwirth and director James Burrows, and more.

Kelsey Grammer knew that Frasier Crane needed his brother Niles Crane for an onscreen reunion. The only issue: Convincing former co-star David Hyde Pierce to return as the neurotic psychiatrist for the “Frasier” Paramount+ revival series.
In a new interview, Grammer revealed to Variety that he did his “best” to get Pierce back, even in a cameo role. “I really wanted David Hyde Pierce to join us. And I did my best to have him come along for the ride,” Grammer said. “And at one point, he finally just said, ‘I don’t really want to play the character anymore.’ And that was fine.”
The lack of Pierce’s Niles inspired Grammer to reimagine what a “Frasier” reboot would look like, landing on a return to the character’s original “Cheers” roots in Boston. “It came to me in a dream, let’s go back to Boston. There’s unfinished business there,...

It’s a chilly February evening on the Paramount lot as Kelsey Grammer transforms into Frasier Crane for the first time in nearly two decades. It’s an emotional moment on set, both nostalgic and anticipatory. The sets are new, as is every cast member besides Grammer. But behind the camera, legendary director James Burrows shares some continuity with Grammer — having been there from the character’s 1984 beginning on “Cheers.”
Even months later, with the 2023 “Frasier” now on the air (via Paramount+), Grammer gets choked up when asked about what returning to the character — and having institutions like Burrows (one of the original “Cheers” creators) back on board — means to him.
“It’s a piece of personal heaven for me that Jimmy Burrows is still in my life,” Grammer says, his voice cracking just a bit. “And I will always feel that way about him. He’s really helpful. And...

"Frasier" had a bevy of guest stars throughout its original eleven-season run, but you might not recognize some of them on first watch. That's because many of the most famous actors to appear on the beloved sitcom did so in voice only, calling into psychologist Frasier Crane's (Kelsey Grammer) Seattle radio show for all manner of life advice. Casting a celebrity who viewers never actually see felt like a new gimmick when the series first premiered, and it's frankly still a rarity now.
In an oral history of the series published by Vanity Fair in 2018, series co-creators Peter Casey and David Lee, casting director Jeff Greenberg, and director Jimmy Burrows talked about how the call-in guest stars idea originated, who showed up on the other end of the line, and which celebrities turned "Frasier" down. "Early on, someone suggested getting guest voices," Casey recalled. "Kelsey agreed, as long as they weren't goofy calls.

From “Cheers” to “Frasier,” Kelsey Grammer’s Frasier Crane was a mainstay of comedy TV for 20 years, from the ’80s to the early-aughts. Now, after an equal amount of time off the air, Grammer is back in the role for Paramount+’s “Frasier.”
The streaming series is a revival-meets-reboot that once again spins off Grammer’s character with a new cast of colorful characters. Some original “Frasier” stars will return to guest star. However, David Hyde Pierce won’t return as Niles and John Mahoney, who played their father Martin, passed away in 2018.
That means Frasier – along with “Frasier” fans – will be surrounded by new faces. With that in mind, here’s a handy guide to the new “Frasier” cast and characters, including where you might have the actors before.

Thursday’s episode of Paramount+’s “Frasier” revival saw the return of Dr. Lilith Sternin – the ex-wife of Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) and mother of Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott) – as the two parents compete for their son’s affection during his birthday.
Showrunner Joe Cristalli (“Life In Pieces”) told TheWrap that “nothing was more enjoyable as a fan to watch” than seeing Grammer and Neuwirth’s characters go toe-to-toe zinging each other again.
“There’s a version of this show where ‘Oh, Lilith and Frasier are a little softer now, they found a nice balance and they’re starting to come around’ and no, that’s not the case,” Cristalli told TheWrap. “They’re still going at each other hard and it’s so fun to write for that. It’s so fun for such a specific voice to come up with these insults and jokes that nobody else can perform except for Kelsey and Bebe.

Kelsey Grammer has returned to television as the iconic Dr. Frasier Crane, roughly 30 years after the original NBC sitcom first premiered. The Paramount+ revival sees the titular character return to Boston for the next chapter of his life, with new challenges to face, new relationships to forge and an old dream or two to finally fulfill.
In addition to Grammer, the show’s cast includes Jack Cutmore-Scott as Frasier’s son Freddy, Nicholas Lyndhurst as Frasier’s old college buddy turned university professor Alan, Toks Olagundoye as Olivia, Alan’s colleague and head of the university’s psychology department, Jess Salgueiro as Freddy’s roommate Eve and Anders Keith as Frasier’s nephew David.

Lilith is back!
With Frasier's return to Boston, it was only a matter of time before Dr. Lilith Sternin returned, and it finally occurred during Frasier Season 1 Episode 7.
Frasier and Lilith's relationship dates back to the 1980s, when they met, married, and divorced during Cheers.
Despite their split, Lilith has always been one of Frasier's most entertaining romantic matches and sparring partners.
Even with all of the ongoing jokes about Lilith being ice cold to the touch, there has always been a fire that's burned between these two characters, and even between Lilith and Frasier's brother, Niles, during an ill-advised one-night stand on the original Frasier.
Although Lilith traded in for her conservative tightly pulled bun for a semi-conservative bob cut, Bebe Neuwirth still brought her A-game and slipped into this extraordinary character seamlessly.
Lilith: Hello, Frasier.
Frasier: Lilith. Dear God. Who looked in the mirror and said your name three times?...

When we last saw Bebe Neuwirth's Lilith Sternin, she was gazing affectionately at her ex-husband, Frasier Crane, as he left her hotel room. Season 11, episode nine of "Frasier" aired some 20 years ago and saw the titular psychiatrist set up on a blind date with his ex-wife without realizing it. As had happened so many times before, the pair ended up in bed together, before departing on a rather sweet note. As Frasier leaves he remarks, "We do have our baggage don't we? But then sometimes that's what makes the trip so interesting."
The scene ends with both Frasier and Lilith looking longingly after one another, knowing they have a deep bond but can never make a real relationship work. Touching stuff, really. But then, "Frasier" always managed to pull off heartfelt moments, blending them with comedy to create the magic we all remember.

We've been waiting for some big guest appearances on the new "Frasier" revival for some time. So far we've had June Diane Raphael of "Grace and Frankie" fame show up in an episode that seemed to suggest the reboot had forgotten all about a classic "Frasier" installment. But what we really want to see are some guest appearances from the "Frasier" of old.
The dream scenario would, of course, be David Hyde Pierce's Niles returning, but after the actor turned down an offer to come back for the revival show, that's very unlikely to happen. In the meantime, we've been gifted an appearance by Bebe Neuwirth, who plays Frasier's ex-wife and on-again-off-again romantic interest Lilith Sternin. Neuwirth shows up in episode seven of the revival portraying Lilith's classic "ice queen" persona that fans of the original series and "Cheers" — where she and Dr. Crane originated — will remember.

The Frasier reboot officially premiered on Paramount+ in October. The reboot was years in the making. While its premise is certainly interesting and aims to recapture the original magic of the series, it’s different from what the creators initially envisioned. When the Frasier reboot was first being discussed, the show was supposed to focus on Dr. Frasier Crane and Dr. Niles Crane. When David Hyde Pierce, the actor who played Niles, opted out of reprising his role, the team had to go in a new direction. So, what was the original premise?
The original ‘Frasier’ reboot would have focused on Frasier and Niles
The Fraiser reboot that fans are watching is not the reboot that the show’s creators originally intended. Long before the reboot made it to production, there was a storyline floated around that heavily relied on David Hyde Pierce.

The neither disappointing nor remarkable "Frasier" revival show has arrived on Paramount+ without any of the supporting cast from the original sitcom. Star Kelsey Grammer and new writers Joe Cristali and Chris Harris were initially intent on bringing back as many actors as they could for their reboot, but pretty much all of them either said no or weren't available. Still, Grammer and co. pressed ahead anyway, producing a show that has flashes of the original's brilliance, but as it goes on, increasingly reveals that, sans his former compatriots, Frasier Crane isn't quite as delightful a character as he once was.
One of the most important elements missing from the new series is David Hyde Pierce's Niles, Frasier's brother, who provided an equally pompous banter partner for the titular doctor throughout the original's 11-season run. Together, Frasier and Niles would deliver some of the show's most hilarious and witty dialogue,...

Hey baby I hear the Blues a'callin'... The theme song to the hit NBC comedy series "Frasier" is a catchy little ditty with some rather unusual lyrics, and that's entirely by design. The series' main character, Frasier Crane, played by Kelsey Grammar, is a neurotic psychiatrist who hosts his own radio show, so why does the theme song to his show go on about "tossed salad and scrambled eggs"? And what the heck does that mean, anyway?
In a retrospective on the theme song for the release of the "Frasier" reboot, Bruce Miller, the composer behind the fun and funky theme song, shared the secrets behind his composition. That means we now know why it's so strange. We also finally know what the whole salad and eggs thing is about, too, because that sounds like the grossest restaurant order ever, and I love a chef's salad with hardboiled eggs. It...

Hooray, showbiz is back! Now what?
Wednesday night, SAG-AFTRA reached a tentative agreement with the AMPTP, bringing to an end to six months of Hollywood strikes, involving the writers guild and then the actors. The writers have been back at work for a month, and SAG leadership has told its members they can resume working even while everyone waits for the new agreement to be ratified.
Things have gotten pretty lean over the last few months of television, as some networks and streamers have largely run out of original scripted programming,...

This post contains spoilers for the sixth episode of the "Fraiser" revival series.
Prior to the debut of the "Frasier" revival on Paramount+, we heard a lot about how the show would present a different Frasier Crane. In a behind-the-scenes featurette, star Kelsey Grammer teased the new series with this summary:
"Now is the right time to bring Frasier back because he is not the same guy anymore. He is a little wiser, he may actually even be a little funnier, and he has a new mission in life. I mean, he's got some loose ends to tie up in Boston, but he also has a relationship to carve out with his son."
Meanwhile, co-showrunner Joe Cristali told the Los Angeles Times that in this new series, Frasier is "a little bit more comfortable in life; he's not as anxious [and] he's not the guy that has to prove himself anymore.

So far, the "Frasier" revival has shown a pretty consistent awareness of its origins, harkening back to highlights from the original series and paying tribute to the late John Mahoney, who previously played Frasier's dad, Martin. In fact, links to the beloved sitcom that ran from 1993-2004 can be found in pretty much every episode of the reboot. There have even been callbacks to "Cheers," the show on which Kelsey Grammer's Frasier Crane first debuted.
In the very first episode, the titular doctor pokes fun at "Cheers" with a joke about spending too much time in "a certain bar." Then, in the fifth episode, the writers used a "Cheers" joke to provide new insight into Frasier when he admitted that he never felt like he truly fit in anywhere — including the famous bar in question. When you combine all this with the fact the revival show brought back "Cheers...
